Trumpet-E Magazine When the going gets tough… After an entire summer vacation spent shaking hands with google meet and google classroom, the teacher in me was all geared up and looking forward to online academic transactions. Initially, there were lot of butterflies in my stomach, as I passed through numerous apprehensions and still persistently tried my best to reach out to all my children virtually. As stories of unrelenting resolve and determination triumphing over the pandemic were heard from around the world, I too pushed myself to remain strong, attempting to pass on that strength to all the young faces that stared at me. The children of 6th standard usually join us in the secondary section with bubbling energy and innocence. It’s the company of their seniors that enable their maturing as secondary students. But solely online classes meant that they were to retain their innocence and infectious energy for a fairly longer period of time in 2020. We secondary teachers weren’t known to them, yet their affection for their teachers was endearing. It was during one of these 6th standard classes that the boys’ monitor of 6thB pleasantly astonished me with his level of maturity and commitment. Having taken more than 20 online classes by now, I considered myself to be quite familiar with Google Meet, if not an expert. How wonderful it would have been if the technology that we met every day, showed a fair bit of familiarity with us too and acknowledged our frequent acquaintance in the past. But‘No’, Google Meet was so stubborn that day, selfishly refusing to show any sign of familiarity with me. The link was open, children had joined the meeting, all set for another English class. They could see me, but could hear nothing of what I said, neither could I hear them. As this unwelcome truth dawned on me, I tried to keep calm, typing in the chat Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor 2020-21
Trumpet-E Magazine box,” Dear children, please wait. There are some technical issues which I am trying to resolve.” Initially, I could get glimpses of optimistic little heads nodding and waiting patiently. But the 11-year-olds soon turned restless as they waited for five minutes and then ten. I still couldn’t get the audio to work. It wasn’t a surprise to see my silent phone buzzing. It was Sreedev, the ever-active class monitor of 6th B. As I picked up the call, I heard an anxious voice, “Madam, I am Sreedev. Many children have unmuted their mics and they have started making noise too. If you can present your screen and share the notes, I will make them write and they will all be quiet.” Sometimes, children surprise us with their ingenuity, sense of responsibility and above all their ability to think way ahead of us even when the times are unfavourable. Still struggling to sort out my technical faults, I replied with pride written all over my lips, “Yes Sreedev, I will do it right now and thank you.” It took almost twenty minutes of persistent trials and errors before I could get my voice back. By then, my class was perfectly silent, quietly writing down their notes, guided by their dynamic leader. What more does a teacher want! Sabitha V A TGT English K V Adoor Shift 2. Trumpet-E Magazine The Iron Lady of India Indira Gandhi History was born through Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru on the 19thDay of November 1917 in the lap of Ahmedabad- IndiraPriyadarshiniwho had later become the one- and only-woman Prime Minister of India. She grew up with her mother at the Anand Bhavan. Shehad a lonely and unhappy childhood. She had a younger brother who died at infancy itself. Her father was often away from home, in the struggle for making India free. He was often jailed by the British and so Indira had limited contact with her father. But, Nehru somehow managed to keep her connected through letters. And later these letters played a prominent role in the making of the Iron Lady. Her mother Kamala Nehru was frequently bedridden with illness and this caused a lot of distress to Indira, who was just a child back then. She lost her mother in her teenage itself. She had an impressive academic background. She studied at prime institutions likeShanti Nikethan, Vishvabharathi, Oxford. She was conferred honorary doctoral degree by a host of universities globally. Indira Gandhi was actively involved in the freedom struggle. In her childhood she founded the Bal Charka Sangh in 1930, the Vanara Sena of children to help the congress party. She was imprisoned in 1942 and worked in riot affected areas of Delhi under Gandhi’s guidance. Gradually she became a part of Indian politics through Indian National Congress. She had been the minister of education and broadcasting from 1964-1968. Then, she held the highest office of the Prime Minister of India in 1966.She was the longest serving Prime Minister after her father. Along with the Prime Minister ship she also held the offices of SpaceMinister and Home Affairs Minister. She is widely regarded as one the most important figures in the history of South Asian politics. She was also known for her aggressive stance on a variety of issues. The day before her death, i.e., 30thOctober 1984, Indira Gandhi visited Odisha where she gave her last speech, which some considered as a premonition of her imminent death. Trumpet-E Magazine A TALK WITH GRANDPA.......... My grandfather is one of those few people in our village who knowssanskrit language. He reads a lot of vedic scriptures from our nearby temples. One day while sitting in the orchard we discussed about two very famous epics the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Here is a small part of that conversation between the two of us. Me: Dadu!what is Ramayan and Mahabharat? Grandpa: Anju, Mahabharat and Ramayan are our ithihas. But many people translate ithihasa to history.Actually, ithihasa is a sanskrit term which means ‘thus it happened’.It is not only history but it has a story, facts, philosophy and great life lessons that can be applied to our life even now. Me: Wow! Dadu it is wonderful!!an epic written so earlier still has implications in our life. But Dadu, do you really believe that the war of Mahabharat andRamayan really happened? Grandpa: YesAnju,I dobelieve that it reallyhappened, but when transferred orally from one generation to another parts are added as embellishments but that is natural. And the proof such as Ram Setu and remnants of Dwaraka found under the sea is proof to it. Me:Dadu,do you think, in earlier days everyone used to read Mahabharat and Ramayan? Grandpa: Anju, when Gurukul education existed, all students were made to learn Mahabharat and Ramayan. Do you know Anju, students of your age learn faster through stories? Mahabharat has many philosophies, governance lessons, leadership lessons and much more embedded in it. For example, in Ramayan when Sugriv tells his vanarsenato go in all the four direction tos earch for SitaMa, it is obvious, everyone knows that Lanka is in Southern direction. What is the point in sending them in all direction? Simply it’s a Geography lesson because in that Sugrive lucidate the physical structure of India, in North explain till Himalaya and beyond and in East explain till Bali Indonesia. Take another example, in Mahabharat, in Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor 2020-21
Trumpet-E Magazine Shantipurv, where Bhishma Pitamah gives civics and law lessons to the Pandavs in the story and the Vitur Niti is lessons in governance. Me: Dadu, what can an Indian youth learn from Mahabharat? Grandpa: Anju, Mahabharat is a book that most of us read but only some of us are able to understand what it really means. Look, when Mahabharata war ended, it is believed that it was the starting of the Kaliyug where Evil does exist among men. No matter how good you are, Evil will exist in this world. Mahabharat is also a reminder that you can overcome Evil. The Pandavs win the war against an army much bigger than theirs, is much more powerful than theirs and this is where the true moral of the story is. The six main characters are representatives of the ideal human being. The ideal human being with six qualities can overcome every single evil and every single obstacle placed in front of them. Sahadev’s tolerance to overcome difficulties, Nakul's self-love and confidence to constantly aim higher, Arjun's focus and determination the driving force to success, Bheem's strength, both mental and physical, to protect themselves and ones around them, Yudhishtir's clean ethics in the most testing situation are at the core of the victory of the Pandavs and bind them all with Draupadi's faith purity and stability. So always remember to work hard throughout your life. Be positive throughout your life but always remember that despite all your hard work and possibility and positivity, evil will exist in this world. That is the harsh truth of time you live in.No matter how big the evil is, it can be overcome with your best effort and pure faith............... Trumpet-E Magazine The Posthumous Memoirs of Someone I Know Dear Reader, I hope you'd have the patience to bear with my ramblings in the first place. I want you to know that writing about my grandfather is honestly more than a bit heart-wrenching for me. Nevermind if you ever feel like I'm bearing tears in my eyes at some point. Yes! You really don't have to worry about that 'cause writing about the person I admired and adored the most in the world is going to boost my monoamine oxidase levels for sure. Well, to begin with, I don't think I'll be needing to go on and explain all of my grandpa's behaviours and ideals, if you have the faintest idea about what a true communist would be like. Ah! Anyways, I ain't going to get started with the story from 'somewhere in the middle of nowhere' for you. I'm assuming you'd have heard or read about the life of at least one revolutionary. Well, in my case, I had one in my own home and that was my \"Grandfather\". Believe me, I'm already getting goosebumps all over my hands.I guess it's high time that I take you to the early 1940s. The notion of untouchability and upper-caste supremacy was metastasizing like cancer in the early 20th century Kerala. \"Oh! To touch or sit with a low-caste! Ughh! Who would do that?! Certainly no one who's got their head sorted out! \". Well, these aren't mine or my grandpa's words. Unironically, had you asked a so-called upper-caste, ignorant human being about untouchability in those days, this would pretty much Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor 2020-21
Trumpet-E Magazine have been their response. On the other hand, there's my grandpa, who at the age of 17(i.e my present age), smashed this very notion to shreds. Upper-caste marriage feasts were exclusively meant for upper-caste people alone in those days. So, this one time, 17 yr old 'Kesavan' (oh well, that's my grandpa's sweet name!) went for a marriage function and when it was time for the feast, he eagerly walked into the Hall. Being the son of an upper-caste school head master, he was greeted by almost every person in there. He took a seat on one end of a row and as he sat there, waiting for the food; he saw a small boy, about half of his age, hop in and sit next to him. As usual, Kesavan greeted the boy with a warm smile. But the whole scene overturned when a guy from the bride's family came to know that the boy sitting next to the renowned upper-caste scholar's son was a 'dalit'. Before long, the whole air was filled with people's murmurs and then came a sturdy, ignorant man to shove away the kid. When he began to beat him and even throw his food away, unlike any other person who would have turned a cold shoulder to the whole commotion, Kesavan rose up and covered up for the boy. But still, the man kept yelling at the small boy; who by now was in tears; wholly petrified. Kesavan held his hand and walked out of the hall with him; and that was the first and last feast he'd attended his whole life. Well, yeah! You heard me right! He didn't enter the feast hall even for his own daughter's or son's marriage; let alone even his own marriage! Every time my grandma complains to someone about her; having to sit alone, and eat her marriage feast, a smirk seems to bloom on my grandpa's portrait, hung high up on the wall. Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor 2020-21
Trumpet-E Magazine Ah! That was just one among the thousands of intriguing memories I have of my grandpa; that I've always held and hold tight to my heart to this moment - He always insisted that after his death, his body be cremated without performing rituals of any sort and that his body be draped in a \"Red Flag\", which of course symbolised communism. As per his dying wish, on every month, we provide one whole day's food for people who doesn't have the means to buy food for themselves. While writing this, as I look up at his portrait, I can feel his words echoing in and around me; \"Oh! my child, why did you have to write about me? You could have written about someone who'd done even better deeds while the time they had down there than me! I feel terribly sorry for the ones who're going to read this. They'd surely be having a boring time reading all the crap you write about me! \" Well, is that so? Are you bored with my ramblings? Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor Ardra T J , 12 A Shift I 2020-21

Trumpet-E Magazine HARRY POTTER ANDTHE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE Harry Potter And The philosopher’s stone is my favourite. I like this book very much because it starts a series of seven books. I read all of the seven books but I like this one the best. Harry Potter is a boy living with his grisly aunt and uncle. On his 11th birthday a great beetle- eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid busts in to tell him some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard and he has a place at HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY. On the train he made himself two friends and an enemy. In Hogwarts there were four houses.Harry and his friends went to the same house. On Halloween one of his friends got attacked by a Troll. In November the Qudditch season had begun. After his first Qudditch match he found out about Nicolas Flamel. Harry and his friends searched the whole library to find who Flamel is. On Christmas, as one of his presents he got his father’s Invisibility cloak. He thought he could search the whole library but then the school caretaker came to the library,Harry ran as fast he could. He found himself standing in front of a mirror. He went back to his dormitory. After Christmas ended Harry and his friends were studying in the common room one of his friends had an idea of who Flamel is. Their exams started. After their last exam Harry had a feeling that the thing Flamel made was going to be stolen that night. That night Harry and his friends went to Save it.They had to cross many obstacles and Harry fought the villain and he passed out by doing so. Harry found himself in the hospital wing and the headmaster of Hogwarts. I strongly recommend to all my friends to read this book and the other six books in the series. Trumpet-E Magazine How Curiosity got its name Somewhere out there lived a mere being whose existence was unknown to people. He was not known to the army not to the king, and not to a single person alive. He was seen walking around. People glanced out through the windows and would sometimes catch a glimpse of him as he strode off to the unknown. The baby who turned one yesterday got his name on the civilian list but not this man. A 99-year-old grandma who died a week ago, still has her name inscribed on the debt ledger book of Mammoonj's teashop but not this one. But Lucy, a young girl noticed the one human whom nobody talked to and rushed straight towards the man covered in blanket and uttered with all the confidence that she could gather. “Sir, would you like to have a cup of tea …Instantly she stepped back as she was rewarded with a glare and a walk-off! Day one, day two and three and four went on in a similar fashion and Lucy was still making attempts to offer tea to the man. The city where Lucy resided was full of monotonous people who had no interest in anything but their own selfish benefits. “Sir, would you like to have a cup of tea?” This question asked by Lucy amazed the man. He started visiting the country, just to hear the question asked innocently by a strange girl. One day, the man was walking through the country, but strangely enough the girl with her persistent question was not to be seen. Though unintended, his curiosity shot up…and so took a few steps to ask a woman about the ‘only one curious girl in the city of absent minded’. Clearing the rough throat which had never been used since decades got ready for a conversation. “Miss, have you seen the girl who lives nearby and runs a tea shop? “Who cares!” the lady answered viciously. The man’s eyes shone as he glaredangrily at the woman. Instantly, he rushed towards the center of village of unbothered and indifferent civilians and cast the most powerful spell. “Cater wauling-curos to!!” Kendriya Vidyalaya Adoor 2020-21
Trumpet-E Magazine The place shuddered, as one by one the people fainted and fell down like trees being cut. Thus, the day went by. Eventually the people woke up and went about as they came to, one by one. But the next day saw a change in the people. They started asking questions. “Why don’t cats fly when they can jump so neatly? Why don’t women grow beards? Why doesn’t Jack have another piece of wood to save himself from the ice-cold weather?” All this gibberish was heard by the girl far away in the tea-shop and she wondered “WHY”? Gradually the place of indifferent people changed into the village of curious people. Later, the city was known as “Curriooosty” which is how ‘curiosity’ is believed to have been born. I started investing my time in new hobbies such as gardening, fish farming, and painting. I also started a YouTube channel, along with my sister, out of my passion for dance. This time I also got the opportunity to push my boundaries to explore new activities and develop new skills. Self-care was also one of the top priorities in my list. I start my days early with a meditation session, which helps me to stay calm, composed and healthy during this pandemic. I also spend leisure time (which was in abundance) watching movies and experimenting with my cooking skills. Being confined to our homes with no outside social interactions with fellow humans is tough and goes against our human nature. Nothing can be compared with going to school and experiencing a full student life of interacting with friends and teachers. But we moved on; as responsible students and with constant efforts of our teachers, we adapted to this change. With a new system of education, learning was now more accessible and easier digitally. This is the new normal. We are devoted to staying indoors to break the chain and stand with our country’s fight against the Covid-19 virus. With all this said I have kept a positive head always looking towards the current challenge of lockdown as an adaptive learning experience that we are all faced with. \"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives.
