It is indeed a pleasure to know that the churches and congregation in Middle and North Andaman in coming up with an E-magazine for the Glorification of God and for the spiritual upliftment of the believers. I have a fond reminiscence of my ministry in Middle and North Andaman. Being my first posting as Vicar-missionary it was always special, especially the scenic beauty of Andaman and the hospitality of the believers, it always creates a nostalgia when I remember my years in Andaman. Though the community is depleting still we have a strong work in Middle and North Andaman. The community living and fellowship is exclusive to the land of Andaman, which is one of its kind in the whole Mar Thoma church. Especially I find it a privilege that Mr. Jayan Joy of Rangat got selected to seminary during my tenure and is now ready for his Priestly ordination. In this era, the church faces new challenges concerning its mission and Christian witness. We all are facing an unknown situation in our life, So, I appreciate Rev. Thomas John, Vicar of the parishes and all those who are work behind the initiative of this E- magazine, Another year has almost gone and we are on the brink of another! What kind of a year has 2020 been for you? Where would you place it on a scale of 1 – 10? How about your relationship with God? Did that flourish and grow during 2020 or did it just hover in much the same place as it did the previous year or perhaps even went backwards as you prayed less, heard less from God through his Word, worshipped less. Maybe God didn’t have a big part to play in your life during this past year; somehow he just slipped into the background. You could well ask the question: how much did my life reflect the fact that I am God’s child – did I speak as a child of God; did I act with the love of God in my heart; did I interact with others with the same love and forgiveness that Jesus has shown toward me? Let the studies, meditations, artistic works of this Magazine be a step further for the effort of the mission of the church. Editorial.... Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. We all know that at this onset of COVID-19 pandemic everything has come to a standstill both in India and at a global scale. Our Island too is gripped in it and the carefree life of ours is affected. Also, our Youths ,who went out from the Island for their higher studies and better work opportunities are at higher risk of getting infected. We don’t know till when our Earth will be in Silent mode or rather Recovery mode. At this very outset of COVID-19, we, middle and North Andaman Mar Thoma community are releasing an E-magazine - “Island Messenger”. The once invincible human has been shattered by a tiny, microscopic virus. Man dreamt to conquer the universe, we even reached the moon and Mars, but a small virus made us look back to our creator God. If we see around the world now, there is lot of pain and misery around, domestic violence is high, psychological issues like depression has not even spared the kids, and many lost their jobs and people die because of hunger. In India if we see, we celebrated our 74th Independence Day and at this juncture we have to analyse as to where we are heading towards, to progression or to the same old ways of life . Are we losing our independence because of nationalistic- colonialism? Every policy is being declared in a nationalistic perspective. Even after knowing that it is not good for our country, people are embracing it with open arms because it is wrapped in a beautiful paper called patriotism. Politicization of religion has become the norm of the day and because of this, religious/communal violence and riots are a common sight in modern India. Every action whether withdrawal of Article 370, implementation of CAA or EIA or the building of Ram Temple, everything disturbs the peace of the country. As a common man of this republic and democratic country we are losing our right to question. If we question, we become anti-national. However, if we see, the present political establishment in India questions the very essence of India and secular fabric that it upholds. It had tarnished India’s Plurality and diversity. Our Island is a great piece of attraction for the tourists; its beauty is always been a mesmerizing and breathtaking experience to those who visited and as islanders we take pride in its beauty. But CORONA has adversely affected it so much so that we rank 1 in active case per million populations. So inadvertently we islanders too are in the clutches of COVID 19. So, globally, nationally and locally we are going through an unknown yet tough phase of time. Though we are disconnected physically this Messenger has opened us a platform to connect with each other. It has given an opportunity to everyone, without any age limit, to share their thoughts and at the same time edify and entertain us. Everyone is given the freedom to give their views and opinion in any form such as articles, devotion, reflection, poems, riddles, drawing/ other art work, short game and quiz. So this messenger is a platform to hear everyone’s voice, to hear their ideas and their thoughts. In this Magazine we have tried to include a wide range of creativity by different age groups. I like appreciate our beloved youths who took this novel initiative, our dear members who readily helped us with their respective contributions. I hope you all feel enriched by this initiative. Get The Beautiful Butterfly Out Of The Cocoon Agnes Sam Rangat All of us should be on survival mode for the near future because we have to make sure we get over this crisis. “Every dark cloud has a silver lining.” Yes, that is true even in the case of the ongoing corona virus induced lockdown. I know it is difficult for all of us including our kids to stay at home all the time. All the parents are trying to maintain their kid’s emotional and mental health. Many of my friends are encouraging their kids to move their bodies and get fresh air creating a safe space for their feelings, programming their days with projects and asking what else we can do. I want to address the last part for all parents. Many parents want some kind of official guidebook on helping their kids through this disruption and are getting worried about what more should be done. Though the parents who are asking this are already doing plenty: They are juggling the laundry and the dishes, their Zoom meetings and their kid’s Zoom classes. They are preparing meals, creating schedules, wiping down the counters, sterilizing doorknobs and light switches, checking in on family members and friends. Amid all the concern about their kid’s emotional health, parents tend to forget that the most important thing they can do is take care of their own emotional health. Here’s one way to think about it : Imagine that you are on a plane. Suddenly, there’s unexpected turbulence. You feel the plane thrust, and your anxiety spikes. Then you hear the pilot’s calm, measured voice. We are going to be experiencing some turbulence for the next 20 minutes or so. It will be a bit bumpy during this time, so I am going to turn on the FASTEN SEAT belt sign and ask that you stay in your seats until we get through this rough patch. The truth is that nobody can function like this for long and eventually parent’s own anxiety will become worse as a result. In order to be present for their kids, parents first need to be present for themselves. This lockdown has brought in a wonderful opportunity for us, the parents, as we engage in meaningful exchange between us and our children. Below are some creative and innovative ways which I am trying with my kids at home to keep them uplifted. Stories and Imaginations – Children have wild imaginations. Let them take you to a world that lives inside their heads. Storytelling sessions are a great way to understand how your child’s mind works. Maybe their stories will tell you how they feel. Address those concerns with facts and enjoy the wild stories that pour out of their heads. Encourage readings – I am telling you, it’s the best of practices a child can grow. If your child doesn’t like to read, you can read to them. Read them your favourite classics or just make up stories as you go. Housework partnerships – This is a great time for children to start enjoying and actively participate in household chores. Make housework the most fun part of the day. Hand them the broom and pretend that it’s a magic wand that makes dirt disappear. Treat them like partners and ask them to find better ways to keep the house clean. Cooking episodes – Turn cooking into an adventure. Take this opportunity to show them that cooking or household chores are everyone’s responsibility, and it’s always better when it is shared. Break gender stereotypes. Kitchen helpers running around to fetch you the correct masala from the correct place can soon become your favourite treasure hunt game. Creativity – Time to bring back your hobby and share it with your child. Have some creative competitions in the house or a talent showcase session every week. The winner can hand off one household chores to the loser. This becomes even more fun if you share a hobby or would like to encourage your child’s hobby by participating in it. Show kindness – Show your children how important a value kindness and generosity is. If you are able to, take care of someone who is not being able to cope with the situation. Reach out to older people in the family who may be feeling lonely and involve your children in the process. With Covid- 19 I believe it’s God’s way of telling us : ‘Only Humans Can Save Human With Humanity.’ Doesn’t it feel like this list can be never-ending? Remember, all that matters in the end is the way we look back at these trying times. THE BEGINNER OF MAR THOMA MISSION IN M&N ANDAMAN Rev. M. M. Thomas A Tribute to M. Abraham Betapur Late. Rev. M. M. THOMAS The Middle Andaman was colonised after the arrival of settlers from Kerala and other parts of mainland India. In the beginning there were no churches and no worship. Later Rev. P. M. Thomas of Jacobite church came to Betapur and marked the beginning of Church and Sunday worship. All Christians were enrolled under one church. There was a mass baptism of the new generation. Situation changed in Betapur once the first missionary Rev M. M. Thomas visited Betapur in 1966-67 years. There were many adverse conditions like lack of roads, transport, stay, communication, electricity etc. But Achen had a great zeal and determination. He met the few Mar Thoma origins and motivated them to begin Mar Thoma Church. Achen’s hard work resulted in buying an old house and converting it into a church. That was the first Mar Thoma Church in Andaman. Very next year. Mar Thoma Church was established in Port Blair also. I was in class eight at the time of Thomas Achen’s maiden Visit. As Achen was alone and had to stay in an unknown dark house, I was authorised to escort Achen and give company. We both were afraid but gained courage by each other’s company. I remembered Achen was diabetic and ate Chappaties. He paid many visit to Betapur under adverse conditions. Today we have well flourished Mar Thoma Churches and congregation in different parts of Andaman. May this prosper further! St. Peter’s MarThoma Church Betapur From my memories……. AnishAbraham Betapur I was born in a MarThoma Christian family in Betapur, a small village in Middle Andaman. As my family are regular church goers, I got the opportunity to go to church since I was a small kid and gradually Sunday worship became a part of my routine like school going. I remember my church was a small church having limited members and we, the children in the church, grew up receiving all the love and affection from church members. My early Sunday school classes were very interesting as the teacher narrated us biblical stories and Bible verses were taught along with many songs. Church picnics were also held under the leader- ship of our Evangelist and Vicar. Good Fridays at our church was always memorable. Another inter- esting event was the annual vacation Bible school (VBS) which were conducted at different venues across M&N Andaman and was full of fun. Most interesting of all was the annual camp held at Portblair during the puja holidays in October where we along with other M&N parish members trav- elled together. I still remember the camps held at Rangachang, Mannarghat&PortMout where we enjoyed a lot as there were very much learning and leveraged opportunities to meet many new friends. With the arrival of winter, the Christmas season was something which we anxiously waits for. The carol song preparations and then the overnight door to door carol singing rounds were always fun filled. Getting into the makeup of Christmas father (Santa) and dancing was exciting specially with the children at RRO (fisherman’s colony). The Prakash Yatra, Christmas celebration at Church followed by the New year services were something which we participated actively. In addition to all these the Vicar and Evangelist came to our houses and prayed for us before our annual exams and felicitated us once our results were announced. After my school education, I had to leave my hometown for studies and later for job. But whenever I visited my home, I visit my church to partake in the services and feel the happiness. When I had my first baby Tanishka, I took her to Betapur and baptised her in the same church where I was baptized. It was a great fellowship to remember as we had a good get together along with our Vicar, Evangelist, church members, my relatives and friends. Our church has celebrated its golden jubilee last year. As we reflect back on its 50 years of journey, we fondly remember our ancestors, forefathers, Bishops, Vicars, Evangelists and everyone associated with our church’s great history. WITNESSING CHRIST AS A DIASPORA COMMUNITY Rev. Koshy Bijo Samuel Missionary Kolar Mission. The word Diaspora means a scattered population whose origin lies in a separate geographical locale. The word Diaspora was used to depict the dispersion of the Jews beyond Israel. In today’s world there are many Diaspora communities. Many who have left their geographical locale and have settled in different places. Today it is not a big deal to be part of the Diaspora community. The ease of transport and the ever growing communication has shrunken our world. Today being away from home, our tradition and culture, still we can witness and enjoy our origin and roots through the virtual world. But a century back the situation was very gruesome. In such a situation a group of Malankara Christians migrated to the dark island of Andaman to for a Diaspora Malankara Christian community. “In the 1940’s the then metropolitan His Grace Abraham Mar Thoma Metropolitan Prayed like this “My God, please spread my people.” This was in response to the prayer by Jesus for his disciples “you shall be my witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and also among the Samaritans and unto the border of the earth.” God answered the prayer of pious Abraham Mar Thoma. The Marthomite community was spread throughout the world to be a Diaspora community and to bear witness Christ to the end of the earth. The Marthomite community settled as a Diaspora community in the Island of Andaman, in the early fifties and from then till now has made great progress. As Marthomite Diaspora it was a great challenge to keep up with our traditions and ethos. The first Diaspora community was the Jewish community who had to go through a great deal of trouble to keep up with their faith and tradition. We can see the pain and pathos of the Diaspora in the book of Daniel. The young men Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are brought to the royal palace for special service. They are provided with excellent training, royal food and royal treatment. Yet to witness Yahweh they detest themselves from royal food and treatment. Yet when the king comes to inspect he find, Daniel and friends who ate less and vegetarian meal, healthy than other competitors who continued the royal treatment. We are also familiar with God’s presence with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the midst of the burning furnace and God’s guidance with Daniel in the lion’s den. ISLAND MESSENGER 48
When we as Diaspora listen to the voice of God and abide His law, God won’t forbid us. Similar is the story of the first settlers in Andaman’s, twelve Christian families out of which three Marthomite came and settled in Betapur in Middle and North Andaman. They faced hardship in Kerala, they choose a more intricate path to build a future and to experience the providence of God in these complicated situation. They came to an island which was a total alien land, a place known as land of convicts during British raj. Now a group had come to change their fate and the image of the land. They didn’t had treasure or wealth with them. They only had faith and prayer handed over to them by their forefathers. There was no church, there was no clergy yet the 12 families they came together and worshiped God in one accord. They prayed the way they knew, worshiped as their parents worshiped and they survived the hardship of the island. It was their witness and faith that lead to the appointment of first priest, which gradually lead to the growth of the church and witness about Christ in the remote island of Andaman. Today the Andaman island is a mission field of Mar Thoma Evangelistic Association under Mar Thoma church. We have 2 Churches and 3 Chapels in Middle and North Andaman; this is the result of the witnessing community. We had a generation where even in the midst of hardship our predecessors never lost their vision, but today we live in a more comfortable time with all the facilities available at the touch of a button, but the midst of all comfort and luxury we have lost our witness. We are going through a tough time where evil is trying to overpower this world. In such situation our fore fathers should be our role model and as a Diaspora community we need to bear witness to our lord and savior.
