A SEASON OF CHANGE The Victorian year in review, by Jeni Port. The threat of climate change has brought an urgency and focused minds like never before. Two men pivotal to the advancement of the Victorian industry, who helped put the state and its wines on the world stage, passed away in 2019. In May, For Alister Purbrick, at Tahbilk, the timing was right to launch a new wine Colin Campbell, OAM, fourth-generation winemaker at Campbells Wines in brand with son Matt, a well-known advocate for sustainability, one that Rutherglen died after a short battle with cancer. He famously stepped up at a time when “We will be 100 per cent vegan, with every wine we make as of 2020 muscat needed a champion and initiated a quality classification system for vintage,” said Alister Purbrick. “The reality is that most wines made anywhere Rutherglen muscat that helped rejuvenate consumer interest in the fortified. in the world are so close to being vegan it isn’t funny. economy, generating an estimated $7.6 billion in direct benefit to the economy and supports 13,000 direct and 33,000 indirect jobs, most of which are located in regional areas,” states the report. Among the opportunities noted it outlined renewed focus on tourism and export, including the creation of a Victorian Wine Season to coincide with the wine industry’s “most exciting time of year” - the launch of new release wines. As the year drew to a close it was time to reflect on both big names and small celebrating milestones. For Morris Wines, celebrating its 160th birthday, there was a sense of relief and accomplishment, for having been put on the market not once but twice by its previous owner, Orlando Wines (now Pernod Ricard), it appears to have found true happiness under the ownership of Casella Wines. For the Rathbone family, at Yering Station, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its reserve wine program, the milestone was about future challenges and, in particular, dealing with an impending multi-million replanting of its vineyards due to the arrival of the phylloxera louse in the Yarra Valley. And then there was the re-opening and celebration of an historic wine estate now blessed with a second life. Mt Ophir Winery and Vineyard has been given new life and purpose under the ownership of the Brown family, of All Saints Estate, and during the 2019 vintage a shiraz from vines on the property was produced at the family’s main winery in Wahgunyah. More wines from Mt Ophir are expected to follow, and there are plans for the Mt Ophir winery on the property to be rehabilitated and brought back to life. Above left: Alister Purbrick from Tahbilk. TRYING TIMES AS DROUGHT DEEPENS The New South Wales year in review, by Rick Allen. I can only speak for my own vineyard, but if this continues we’ll seriously have to look at letting one or two of our lesser vineyards go next season to make sure we have water on hand for our better vineyards. RIGHT across the NSW winegrowing regions, the message was the same. to make sure we have water on hand for our better vineyards. I hate to do Worryingly dry conditions, yields generally down, but fruit quality pretty it but we may have no option.” good. In short, not a stellar vintage, but generally strong. Over at Orange, the story was much the same. The one good thing is it vintage”. means we’re under no pressure when we pick, so all our fruit is at optimum ripeness, but we could sure use some rain. It’s getting tough now. “It was very dry early and things were looking tough, but fortunately “Those who had water available seemed to do well - an average yield for we had a couple of isolated storms that dropped water at exactly the them I’d say - but those without water definitely saw less fruit.” right time in November and the end of January,” Helm said. “That really Swift said he was “pretty happy” with the fruit that did come off although, freshened things up for us.” like Canberra, it won’t go down as one of Orange’s stellar vintages. “The fruit all came off well, there just wasn’t enough of it,” he said. “But we The end result was a vintage that won’t go down as one of Canberra’s got some good aromatic whites across the board, but it’s probably a little best, but was pretty good nonetheless. too early to tell yet just how the reds will finish. The flavours were good, but they generally had lower acids, so we’ll have to see how they develop.” “I was still a bit nervous early, but the reviews so far of our Helm wines Rob Black, winemaker at Bunnamagoo in Mudgee, said the region is have been terrific,” he said. generally delighted with the quality of the vintage considering the trying conditions. “And speaking to other winemakers we seem to have done pretty well. “I’d say it was probably the driest vintage on record,” he said. “If not It came down to managing your vines - that’s always the key. the driest, then certainly it would be the second driest. I understand the record was set back in the 1940s. “One or two of the smaller operations might have suffered, but overall “It was our third really dry one in a row and yields were down about 30 I’m hearing Canberra has stood up pretty well. per cent.” Nonetheless he is upbeat about the wines the region has delivered, “The rieslings have come up very well, the shiraz and shiraz viognier believing it has edged out the strong 2018 vintage. are both good, and the cabernet is also impressive. “I suppose the one question mark could be the chardonnay. It doesn’t like the early dry and could be a bit of a struggle.” Helm says the ongoing dry was pushing winemakers into having to make some hard decisions. “I can only speak for my own vineyard, but if this continues we’ll seriously have to look at letting one or two of our lesser vineyards go next season Wine of the Year Awards Annual Edition 2020 W I N E S TAT E 169

“I did a fairly big tasting recently from across the region a while back and the overall quality across the region was good,” he said. “We all agreed the rieslings were high quality with good acid, the chardonnays all seemed to have good balance, the reds always have good tannins here which ensures their longevity, and they had good depth of flavour. “Overall we’re really pleased, there were no overripe characters which is always a risk in hot years.” He said there was some die back on the vines and some wineries - those fortunate to have water - were taking the opportunity to replant to take advantage of when the drought breaks. “We’re in a bit of a transition in Mudgee with new plantings going in - a lot of new varieties which is exciting - so that they’ll be ready to go when it rains again.” In the Hunter, Mike de Iuliis, of de Iuliis Wines, is particularly excited by the semillons of 2019, and feels the whites in general fared better than the reds. “A nine out of 10 for the whites, but a seven-and-a-half for the reds,” he said. “Overall a good vintage - not as good as ’17 or ’18, but certainly better than ’15 and ’16. “I really like the whites and think the '19 semillons will be one of those vintages up there with some of our best. The sort of vintage where we hold back some of the semillon and release it in five years as a museum release. “The chardonnays are a bit more restrained and not quite as rich as the '17s and '18s, but impressive all the same. “We had a run of really hot days in the mid to high 40s in February after most of the whites were off, and I think that told on the reds that were still on the vine. “Some parcels of fruit got overcooked, but the good vineyards fared better overall, and that’s how it should be.” De Iuliis said his yield was “spot on” but also said he had spent a lot of time and money on soil health. “Mulch, compost, carbon … a few things to help water retention in the soil, so I did OK, but after all the work we’ve put in, I would have been disappointed if that wasn’t the case.” From top to bottom left to right: Mudgee vineyards, Ken Helm of Helm Wines, Bunnamagoo Winery, town of Mudgee, Mike de Iuliis of de luliis wines. 170 W I N E S TAT E Wine of the Year Awards Annual Edition 2020

TOUGH TIMES The West Australian year in review, by Mike Zekulich. The fruit situation proving a great challenge to winemaker skills to try and make good wines from damaged fruit, if they had any at all. FROM stellar to horror - that is how one WA winemaker summed up the make a lot of passes through the vines. “It was like dropping money on difference between the 2018 and the 2019 vintages, the result of severe the ground. If you did all that, you got pretty decent quality wine. If you did weather conditions. not, it was not so good.” Warren forecast some good quality whites from the vintage, while he expected some very good wines from malbec and “Involved in 2019 were widespread thunderstorms, hail, frost and very heavy cabernet franc from the well-managed properties as well as good cabernet rains, much greater than normal,” said Kim Tyrer, winemaker at Mt Barker’s and shiraz. “It really was a vintage where the influence of the viticulturist Galafrey Wines who is also vice president of the local wine producer’s was really significant,” he said. “So it was the time for those who knew what association. Others may well have deemed it viticultural heaven to hell. they were doing to shine, rather than the winemakers. They got really good One Pemberton grower said he did not pick a single bunch in the vintage. rewards for their efforts.” A 20-year winemaking career at Houghton led Ross Pamment to reflect on fruit from northern and southern areas of the “It was disastrous,” he said. “Many other vineyards were hit as well, South West. “Northern fruit produced an excellent vintage, similar to 2018,” some as far away as Margaret River.” Overall, it was estimated the region he said. Overall, he believed Margaret River would produce a comfortable was down about 40 per cent on crop expectations with some varieties - range of wines from 2019 without it being a great year. “I believe consumers the fruit situation proving a great challenge to winemaker skills to try and will be pretty happy with chardonnay we have in barrel, and chenin blanc,” make good wines from damaged fruit, if they had any at all. he said. “If anything, they may have slightly pronounced acids from a cooler year keeping the wines fresh and zesty. Reds picked two-three weeks earlier “For many it will be financially difficult, if not impossible, to make up the than usual will be more in the earlier drinking styles, with nice flavours but costs,” said Tyrer. lacking some gutsiness on the palate. They are nice wines without having the body and richness people expect.” Pamment’s Houghton service puts Jason Conti, who works with his father Paul on family properties at him second to the Houghton winery doyen Jack Mann, who completed Wanneroo north of Perth and at Margaret River to the south, said there 51 consecutive vintages with the historic WA wine producer. Houghton was some salvation for the “smart people who got chardonnay off early”. has now been sold to neighbouring winemaker Oakover Estate owned “This gave the wine a bit more acidity and so they were leaner and fresher by the Yukich family. Being back in local family hands will please many - which was fantastic,” he said. “Good growers with good vine canopies Swan Valley folk. No discourse of this nature would be complete without had no problems getting red varieties like cabernet and malbec, ripe.” reference to the end of the incredible Peel Estate Great Shiraz tastings In the Swan, varieties like grenache and shiraz also impressed - looking involving 20 of the greatest six-year-old wines from around the world that “really good” as a result of weather conditions being cooler for longer it was possible to accumulate. Each September, wine lovers would turn up without heat spikes, generating good colour and freshness. “This is what in droves to absorb the tasting and listen to high profile national speakers consumers want,” said Conti. “Chardonnay growers in southern WA areas laud shiraz. Peel Estate principal Will Nairn launched the first Great Tasting might have suffered from lower yields because they did not get the fruit off in 1992 with the 1986 vintage. “It is just so hard getting six-year-old wines quickly enough. “You just have to wait with the reds,” he said. “Be patient now,” Nairn said, explaining why 2019 was the final Great Tasting. Poor and let the fruit hang in there.” Conti stressed good viticulture was vital in viticultural conditions at Peel such as heat and drought, meant there was vintages like 2019, as did another leading local winemaker Mark Warren. not the quality fruit from the 2014, ’15 and ’16 vintages, he said. “We only “You don’t have disease pressures in the south if you have good airflow in made shiraz in quality fruit years.” One of the Aussie big guns included in the vineyard,” Warren said.
