SAUVIGNON BLANC of the year WINNER THE REES HOTEL (NZ) TROPHY Yealands Estate Single Block L5 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019 WINEMAKER: Natalie Christensen COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Brilliant clear pale lemon with green undertones. Pure, lifted aromas of wild thyme and citrus and mineral notes characterise the nose. The palate is rich and textured, defined by the mineral flavours that give the wine exceptional length. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Clams, freshly shucked oysters, asparagus dishes, goats cheese salad. CELLARING: Enjoy now, or cellar 2–4 years. VITICULTURE: The 2019 growing season in Marlborough was a hot and dry one. We received small amounts of rain around the end of December, but then no further rain until late February. These rain events had very little impact on soil moisture levels, but helped to replenish our rivers, setting us up nicely to see us through to harvest. Vintage started mid-March and it provided us with incredibly stable weather with fruit that was full of flavour, naturally balanced acidity and lovely weight. Our L5 Sauvignon Blanc parcel was picked at optimal ripeness, showing the intense flavours and aromas that the wine is known for. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The clean, ripe fruit picked from our L5 Block was de- stemmed, chilled and gently pressed off to settle in a small stainless steel tank for 48 hours. The clear juice was racked off and warmed before being inoculated with yeast selected for achieving pure fruit expression. A long, cool fermentation took place over 21 days. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was racked, stabilised and filtered before bottling. PINOT GRIS/GRIGIO of the year WINNER THE STAMFORD GRAND HOTEL TROPHY Cockfighter's Ghost Single Vineyard Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris 2017 WINEMAKER: Xanthe Hatcher – Agnew Wines COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Pale green colour. Lifted aromas of pears and white peach with hints of honeysuckle. The palate has powerful stonefruit and pear juice flavours along with a textured mouthfeel. Citrus acidity balances the palate, giving it a fresh finish. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Pair with pan fried salmon, roast chicken or pork. CELLARING: Enjoy now. VITICULTURE: The 2017 vintage began with above average rainfall in winter and spring which set the vines up very well. Bud burst was on time, but conditions were very cool for the first part of spring. The summer rains stopped in mid-January and it was very dry for the rest of the summer with only a few millimetres of rain meaning that disease pressure was low. The days were mild with a lot of cool nights which delayed ripening on all varieties. This longer hang-time resulted in excellent conditions for flavour and aroma development. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The grapes for this wine were selected from a single vineyard site in the cool climate region of Balhannah in the Adelaide Hills. The fruit was harvested and whole bunch pressed to tank where it was allowed to cold settle overnight. The clean juice was racked and then fermented with an aromatic yeast strain at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain freshness and enhance varietal character. A small portion was fermented in older french oak barriques to add texture and complexity. The wine blended, lightly fined, filtered and bottled under screw cap. COP166663 A helping hand in crafting fine wines In the modern, dynamic wine industry the hand crafting of great wines is often overlooked. Whilst only 2% of the world’s wines are made using new oak barrels, a high proportion of the ‘great wines’ of the world are handcrafted in them. For almost two centuries the cooperages of the Tonnellerie François Frères Group have been producing barrels for these wines. The TFF Group has evolved from humble beginnings to now having its brands internationally recognised throughout the wine world. Through its Demptos Research Centre at the University of Bordeaux, it has over the last 20 years quantified the science to explain why new oak barrels provide that added dimension to allow very good fruit to realise its full potential. Classic Oak, on behalf of the TFF Group, is proud to lend a helping hand to the premium programs of many Australian and New Zealand producers. CABERNET SAUVIGNON of the year WINNER THE HAMBURG SÜD TROPHY Angas & Bremer Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 WINEMAKER: Peter Pollard COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: A deep red plum with a magenta hue, this wine has lifted aromas of chocolate, cassis and dark cherries with undertones of mint. The palate displays luscious flavours of ripe plum, blackberry and liquorice that finishes with smooth tannins and superb length. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: The bold flavours and rich tannins pair perfectly with marinated ribeye steak or lamb backstrap and mint sauce. CELLARING: It drinks beautifully now and will reward patient cellaring over the next decade. VITICULTURE: A warm, dry spring provided excellent initial growing conditions, with timely rainfall events aiding vine development and growth. The season then benefited from the cooling afternoon breezes in the warmer months, keeping overnight temperatures down; enabling steady fruit ripening and vibrant flavour development. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard from Langhorne Creek, with the block nestled on the banks of the Bremer River. The vineyard is well established and has minimal inputs. The soil profile is black, silty clay with drip irrigation used as required. The vines are grown on a single cordon, with the sprawling canopy allowing dappled sunlight to enter the fruit zone. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The fruit was crushed with rollers out to maintain some whole berries and then cold soaked for a few days. Fermented over a ten-day period, a gentle pump over regime was employed through-out, with fermentation temperature maintained between 24 to 26 degrees. Pressed to tank before maturing in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads for approximately 16 months. AUS SHIRAZ/SYRAH of the year WINNER THE WINE WORKS TROPHY Z Wine Poole Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 WINEMAKER: Janelle Badrice (Zerk) COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: The colour is dark ruby red with youthful hues. The 2016 Z WINE [POOLE] Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz exudes inviting and brooding layers of plum, blackberry, cherry, rhubarb pie and subtle pepper spice with intermingled floral violets on the bouquet. On the palate it is luscious and velvety with wild forest fruits, balancing oak and perfect tannin structure. It is a striking Barossa Valley shiraz that delivers impressive depth and length of flavour with a refined power and ticks all of the boxes. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Shiraz is enhanced when paired with charry barbequed meats and vegetables, but is also a perfect pairing for hard cheeses, such as good aged parmesan or gouda. CELLARING: Drinking beautifully as a bold wine now, but you will be rewarded with patience (30-40 years cellaring). The wine is bottled under natural cork. VITICULTURE: The 2016 Z WINE [POOLE] Old Vine Shiraz is made from approximately 65 year old vines. It is part of the Z WINE ‘Single Vineyard Series’. The low yielding vines produce great intensity especially in dry years like 2016 when yields were down 50%, resulting in some of the best concentration and depth of flavour we’ve seen for shiraz in the past decade. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The fruit is hand-picked and basket pressed. The wine is matured in oak for 20 months. New French oak makes up 60% of the blend.
