‫مقابلة مع‬ ‫كارول بيدنارسكي‬ One-on-one with Canadian artist Carol Bednarski

Sixty minutes interview with Carol Bednarski 1. Please tell us a bit more about yourself ? 2. How does your usual working day look like ? I have always been an artist and from a young age I was always with I wish I could say I’m up at the crack of dawn and in my studio all day, pencil in hand. I was one of those students that lived in the art room in but in reality I am usually lounging with coffee and on my laptop, high school. I have no formal artistic training and I only painted doing my social media, chatting online with other artists on art sporadicly over the years, until more recently. Having raised four forums and listening to art podcasts or I’m at the gym lifting weights children and working internationally I put my art on a back burner for (my son’s my personal trainer, so no getting out of it). By noon I’m some years. ready to get into my studio and see what happens. It’s different every day and I don’t lock myself into a schedule. In 2020 I started painting again and woke to a burning desire to explore and experiment with my art. I was seeking to let go I have to feel inspired and have uninterrupted time to get into the flow completely and allow my inner intuition to take over. I like to start a and that’s when the magic happens. Late afternoon is the time for a painting with no intention or plan, laying down colours, shapes and nice walk, a glass of wine, or doing a bit of gardening. Life has to have lines, responding in the moment to what I see. I keep adding layers, balance I draw so much inspiration from where I live surrounded by scrapping into the paint, always moving quickly and keeping. the ocean and beautiful landscapes. I'm so very blessed. everything loose and bold. There is always a lot of texture, which I love. At a certain point I will start to see something take shape. Often Really, ones greatest art is their life, and I know my art is a reflection a landscape, sometimes a floral will emerges. This is when I get of my life, so I want to fill it with beauty.. excited and start to coax the image up from the canvas, still trying not to think too much and allow it to flow without force. There are times I 3. Your artwork is characterized by an abundance of colourful like to work from a reference but I will always start with an abstract landscapes, flora & fauna – the density of your artwork leaves to capture the feeling before attempting the image. such an impression that one feels like transformed into it – wouldn't you agree ? This process is a journey. It’s an emotional one for sure, full of doubt and insecurity but also surprise and joy and delight. My hope is that Well thank you so much for that! That is lovely to hear. Colour is what I produce will spark some joy and surprise in the viewer and that definitely a main driving force in my art. I’m so moved by colour. It they will have an emotional response. But perhaps a deeper truth is excites me and I love seeing how the colours interact and play that the act of painting has been a personal journey of discovery for together. It’s certainly my hope that my art would pull the viewer in me. Art, and the journey of creating, reflects the journey of life. For and transport them to a place of joy, or peace, or wonder. And colour me it’s about trust. Learning to trust and accept what is, and being has the power to move us emotionally. fully in each moment, authentic and honest. It’s not even about the final result, (although it’s lovely when I create something I love). For I have spent time reflecting on the ‘why’ of painting, and honestly, it’s me it’s really about the bravery it takes to face a blank canvas, all about connecting with others. I don’t want to be too concerned overcome my fear, be me, and just paint. Not because I love to, but about sales, which can derail me, but of course it’s wonderful when because I need to. someone falls in love with a piece and takes it home. It’s also very validating. I am a recent member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and have had my work exhibited in many juried shows in the past year and a half as well I was selected for the 2021 Gold List of Contemporary Artists by Art Marketing Magazine. I was thrilled to see my art published for the first time this fall. It’s all such a wonderful surprise to see that my art connects with others and moves them emotionally. What a joy. What a privilege. I plan to continue to explore and push myself artistically and no doubt I will be surprised and delighted by the journey.

Carol Bednarski in her atelier 4. On a different note: How hard is it nowadays for young  artists/newcomers to establish & express themselves through their works to a wider audience and how is their art appraised ? I have to feel inspired and have uninterrupted Well actually I consider myself very much a newcomer to the broader art time to get into the world. So, I can say from experience that it takes a lot of work. These flow and that’s when days, more and more there are online galleries, and many artists list their the magic happens. works on a multitude of these sites. It’s hard to compete for attention when there are hundreds or even thousands of artists listed. There are so many great artists and sometimes it seems, not enough venues where they can show their work in person. Instagram and Facebook are a way to be seen, and if you learn how to market yourself on social media there can be some success there. Then there is the whole world of NFT’s that has opened up, which I have yet to delve into, or even fully understand for that matter. There is a huge learning curve to all this, and many artists just want to paint and not deal with the marketing end and all the new technology that is involved. So, they are left with navigating the world of art gallery representation….(also a lot to learn there). As far as appraising the value of their work, for the artist this is probably the hardest thing to do objectively. There can be a lot insecurity involved which can lead artists to under valuate their work. It can be hard to put yourself out there. There is a lot of advice from the ‘pros’ on how to price your work, and there are so many variables, so I don’t have much to say other than ‘it ain’t easy’ 5. Finally: What’s the best of advice given to you ? The best advice I’ve been given is to paint from the heart, find the joy, and just keep painting. Carol, we thank you for the interview.

Colour is definitely a main driving force in my art. I’m so moved by colour. It excites me and I love seeing how the colours interact and play together. It’s certainly my hope that my art would pull the viewer in and transport them to a place of joy, or peace, or wonder. Leena Al Ayoobi, is a Bahraini artist, designer, and the Founder and owner of Dar Alfann Gallery. Bahraini born and raised, Al Ayoobi has been a gifted artist from a young age. As a child, she was fascinated with Japanese anime that used to air on the local TV channels. She mastered the art of drawing anime characters which influenced her later pieces. Her style can now be described as a fusion between Japanese manga and Bahraini folklore from a decidedly feminine perspective.
