So I/Venerable/the Fortunate One, too/would question/ there are/Venerable/numerous branches of craft/as follows/mahouts(elephant driver)/horsemen/charioteers/archers/flag bearers/camp marshalls/camp followers/high military officers of royal birth/military scouts/leaders/heroes/warriors in buck skin/home-born slaves/cooks/barbers/bath attendants/chefs/garland-makers/washermen/weavers/basket-makers/potters/accounters/wine- makers/whatever others like kind there may be/all these/in this very world/the visible fruits of their craft/enjoy/they maintain/themselves in happiness and comfort/they maintain their parents in happiness and comfort/they maintain their wives and children in happiness and comfort/they maintain their friends in happiness and comfort/to recluses and Brahmins/to promote spiritual life/gifts/set up/resulting happiness/lead to rebirth in heaven/Can you/Venerable/thus visible in this very world/as a fruit of the life of a recluse/to declare? He/after a time/having shaved hair and beard/having put on the yellow robe/leaving the house to houseless/ ordained/He/thus being an ordained/being restrained by body/should dwell/being retrained by verb/should dwell/being retrained by mind/should dwell/ with mere food and shelter he is content/great delight in solitude he had 44. 107 51. Bhagavā etadavoca: \"idha mahārāja tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathī satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaṃ deseti ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ. Brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. 51. The Fortunate One/said this/ ‘here Great King/the Tathāgata/in the wolrd/arises/a Noble One/the Fully Enlightened One/ the processor of knowledge and conduct/the Well-gone-one/the knower of the world/the incomparable leader of men to be tamed/the teacher of god and men/the awakened/the Fortunate One/ He/this world including the heaven, Māra and Brahm,recluse and Brahmin’s progeny/ that by himself/having well-realized/makes known/He/preaches the dhamma/which is beautiful in the beginning/beautiful in the middle/and beautiful in the end/with meaning/letters extremely complete/completely pure/chastity/declares/ 52. Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapatiputto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto. So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati. So tena saddhāpaṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisaṃcikkhati: ’sambādho gharāvaso rajāpatho. Abbhokāso pabbajjā. Nayidaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekantaparipuṇṇaṃ ekantaparisuddhaṃ saṃkhalikhitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ carituṃ. Yannūnāhaṃ kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyya’nti. 52. That dhamma/listens/a house holder or/a son of the house holder/ a one later born in a certain family/He/that dhamma/having listened/on Tathāgata/confidence/obtains/He/possess with that obtaining of the confidence/thus considered/ pleasure is the layman’s life/the path of dust/as free as air is having been ordained/it is not easy/by one who dwells in layman’s life/extremely completed/extremely pure/chastity/to practice/this I suppose/having shaved hair and beared/having dress up with yellow robes/leaving from house life/to homeless/and go forth to be ordained.

He/after a time/having given up a geart mass of wealth or little mass of wealth/having given up a large number of the circle of relations or a small number of relations/having shaved hair and beared/having dress up the yellow robes/leaving from house to homeless life/ordains/ He/thus/having been ordained/ being restrained in highest perfect/lives/being perfect in conduct and suitable practice/seeing the danger avoid in even very little faults/having observed/practices in precepts/bodily action/verbal action/mental action/were endowed with wholesomeness/being perfect in morality in pure livelihood/controlling over in senses/ moderated in foods/ endowded with mindfulness and clear comprehension/being contentment/ 53. So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya appaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati. So evaṃ pabbajito samāno pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī. Samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu kāyakammavacīkammena samannāgato kusalena. Parisuddhājīvo sīlasampanno indriyesu guttadvāro bhojane mattaññū satisampajaññesu samannāgato sattuṭṭho. 54. How does/Great King/a bhikkhu/observe the morality? Here/Great King/a bhikkhu/ destructing of life/being abandoned/from the destructing of life/ without stick/without sword/being shameful/showing kindness/being a kind and sympathetic one/dwells. This is one of the moralities. 54. Kathañca mahārāja bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti? Idha mahārāja bhikkhu pāṇātipātaṃ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho lajjī dayāpanno. Sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 55. Adinnādānaṃ pahāya adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti dinnādāyī dinnapāṭikaṅkhī. Athenena sucibhūtena attanā viharati. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 55. Taking of what is not given/being abandoned/from taking of what is not given/abstained/ taking what is given/expecting the giving/without stealing/with a pure mind/dwells. This is one of the morality 56. Abrahmacariyaṃ pahāya brahmacārī hoti ārācārī virato methunā gāmadhammā. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 56. Unchastity/ being abandoned/living far from evil/aloof from the village practice of sex/dwells. This is one of the moralties

Musāvādaṃ pahāya musāvādā paṭivirato hoti saccavādī saccasandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 58. Pisuṇaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti. Ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya. amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya. Iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā, sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā samaggārāmo samaggarato samagganandiṃ samaggakaraṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 58. Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti. Yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā, tathārūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 59. Rude speech/being abandoned/from rude speech/abstained/whatever words without fault/pleasant to the ear/lovely/reaching to the heart/polite/pleasant to the many people/beloved by many people/such type of speech/speaks/ This is one if the moralities 60. Frivolous talk/having abandoned/from frivolous speech/abstained/speaks at right time/speaks at fact/meaningful speaker/ truth speaker/speaks of discipline/speaks to be treasured/ seasonable/defined/connected with the meaning/ This is one of the moralities 60. Samphappalāpaṃ pahāya samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti kālavādī bhūtavādī atthavādī dhammavādī vinayavādī. Nidhānavatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyantavatiṃ atthasañhitaṃ. He/seed and crops’ damaging is abstained/Who takes one meal/ is abstained from taking meals at night/dancing, signing/playing/watching shows/is abstained/ garlands/perfumes/ cosmetics/ornaments/adornments/using is abstained/ higher/wide beds/abstained/acceptance of silver and gold/is abstained/acceptance of raw grain/is abstained/ acceptance of raw flesh/is abstained/acceptance of woman, young girls/is abstained/ acceptance of male or female slaves/is abstained/acceptance of goats/is abstained/acceptance of cocks, pigs/abstained/acceptance of elephants,oxen, horses, mares/is abstained/acceptance of fileds, farm/is abstained/ from ollowing as a messenger/is abstained/from buying and selling/is abstained/from false weighing, false coining, false measuring/is abstained/ from crooked, cheating, deceiting, insincere ptactices/is abstained/from cutting, killing, imprisoning, highway robbery, taking foods by force/is abstained/ This is one of the moralities Minor morality ends 62. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpaṃ bījagāmabhūtagāmasamārambhaṃ anuyuttā viharanti, seyyathīdaṃ: mūlabījaṃ khandhabījaṃ phalubījaṃ aggabījaṃ bijabījameva pañcamaṃ. Sa kho so mahārāja bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. Seyyathāpi mahārāja khattiyo muddhāvasitto nihatapaccāmitto na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ paccatthikato, evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. So iminā ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajjasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Evaṃ kho mahārāja bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti. Mahāsīlaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ 80. So iminā ca ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena satisampajaññena samannāgato imāya ca ariyāya santuṭṭhiyā samannāgato vivittaṃ senāsanaṃ bhajati araññaṃ rukkhamūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhaṃ susānaṃ vanapatthaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ. So pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇīdhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. 84. Thīnamiddhaṃ pahāya vigatathīnamiddho viharati ālokasaññī sato sampajāno. Thīnamiddhā cittaṃ parisodheti. Uddhaccakukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati ajjhattaṃ vūpasannacitto. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojeyya, tassa te kammantā samijjheyyuṃ, so yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantīkareyya, siyā cassa uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāya, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojesiṃ. tassa me te kammantā samijjhiṃsu. So’haṃ yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantī akāsiṃ. Atthi ca me uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāyā\"ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - 86. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso ābādhiko assa dukkhito bāḷhagilāno, bhattaṃ cassa nacchādeyya, na cassa kāye balamattā, so aparena samayena tamhā ābādhā mucceyya, bhattañcassa chādeyya, siyā cassa kāye balamattā, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe ābādhiko ahosiṃ dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Bhattaṃ ca me nacchādesi. Nacassa me āsi kāye balamattā. So’mhi etarahi tamhā ābādhā mutto bhattañca me chādeti. Atthi ca me kāye balamattā\"ti. So tato nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ” - 87. So’mhi etarahi tamhā bandhanāgārā mutto sotthinā abbayena. Natthi ca me kiñci bhogānaṃ vayo\"ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - 88. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso dāso assa anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo, so aparena samayena tamhā dāsabyā mucceyya attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe dāso ahosiṃ anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo, so’mhi etarahi tamhā dāsabyā mutto attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo\"ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - 89. Just as/Great King/a person might be a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to gowhere he wishes to go/he/after a time/from that slavery status/would release/being a self dependent not being a dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever he wishes to go/it occurs him as “I/before/was a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to go wherever I wish to go/that I/now/from that slavery status/am free/a self dependent but not dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever wish to go”. So aparena samayena taṃ kantāraṃ nitthareyya, sotthinā gāmantaṃ anupāpuṇeyya khemaṃ appaṭibhayaṃ, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhānamaggaṃ paṭipajjiṃ dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭibhayaṃ. So’mhi etarahi taṃ kantāraṃ tiṇṇo sotthinā gāmantaṃ anuppatto khemaṃ appaṭibhaya\"nti. So tato nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - 91. Evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu yathā guṇaṃ yathā rogaṃ yathā bandhanāgāraṃ yathā dāsabyaṃ yathā kantāraddhānamaggaṃ evaṃ ime pañca nīvaraṇe appahīṇe attani samanupassati. Seyyathāpi mahārāja ānaṇyaṃ yathā ārogyaṃ yathā bandhanā mokkhaṃ yathā bhujissaṃ yathā khemantabhūmiṃ evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassati. 92. Same thus/Great King/a bhikkhu/as the debt/as the sickness/as the jail/as the slavery-fear/as the desert road/thus/these five hindrancess/when is not removed within one’s self/perceives/just as/Great King/as the free from the debt/ as the free from sickness/as the free from the jail/as the free from slavery status/as the peaceful place/as thus/Great King/a bhikkhu/when these five hindrencess/removed/one’s self/perceives/
124 93. Tassime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassato pāmojjaṃ jāyati. Pamuditassa pīti jāyati. Pītimanassa kāyo passambhati. Passaddhakāyo sukhaṃ vedeti. Sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati. 93. Of the one/five hindrancess/have removed/one’s self/pervives/gladness arises/ of one who glad/delight/arises/of one who is in a delightful mind/body becomes calm/Calmness body/happiness/experiences/of one who is happy/mind becomes concentration/ 94. So vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ vivekajena pītisukhena abhisanteti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa vivekajena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 94. He/separating one’s self from desires/being separated from unwholesome/accompanied by reasoning/accompanied by investigation/arose by the freedom/happiness of delight/to the first absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/originated by rest/with the gladness of happiness/ is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/ 95. seyyathāpi mahārāja dakkho nahāpako vā nahāpakantevāsī vā kaṃsathāle nahānīyacuṇṇāni ākiritvā udakena paripphosakaṃ paripphosakaṃ sanneyya sāyaṃ nahānīyapiṇḍi snehānugatā snehaparetā santarabāhirā phuṭā snehena na ca paggharaṇī – 95. 125 97. Puna ca paraṃ mahārāja bhikkhu vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ samādhijena pītisukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa samādhijena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 97. Seyyathāpi mahārāja udakarahado gambīro ubbhidodako, tassa nevassa puratthimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na dakkhiṇāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na pacchimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na uttarāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, devo ca na kālena kālaṃ sammā dhāraṃ anupaveccheyya, atha kho tamhā ca udakarahadā sītā vāridhārā ubbhijjitvā tameva udakarahadaṃ sītena vārinā abhisandeyya parisandeyya paripūreyya paripphareyya, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato udakarahadassa vārinā sītena apphuṭaṃ assa – 98. Just as/Great King/a lake of water/deep/springing up/nowhere/at souther direction/of the water/entrance/nowhere at/western direction/of water/entrance/nowhere at/northern direction/of water/entrance/the rain/does not/in right time/proper rain water/supply/but/from that same lake of water/cool/torrents of water/having spring up/that same late of water/with cool water/would flow out/would flow round/would complete/would pervade/there is nothing in whole/of the torrents of water/by cool water/untouched/ 99. 126 100. Puna ca paraṃ mahārāja bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti. Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukhavihārīti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti, parippharati nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 100. Seyyathāpi mahārāja uppaliniyaṃ vā paduminiyaṃ vā puṇḍarīkiniyaṃ vā appekaccāni uppalāni vā padumāni vā puṇḍarīkāni vā udake jātāni udake saṃvaddhāni udakānuggatāni antonimuggaposīni tāni yāva caggā yāva ca mūlā sītena vārinā abhisannāni parisannāni paripūrāni, paripphuṭāni nāssā kiñci sabbāvataṃ uppalānaṃ vā padumānaṃ vā puṇḍarīkānaṃ vā sītena vārinā apphuṭaṃ assa. 101. Just as/Great King/in a pond of waterlily pond/or in a pond of red lotus/ or in a pond of white lotus/or in some another pond/waterlilies or/red lotuses or/whote lotuses or/those who are born in the water/growing up in the water/not growing out of the water/are fed from the water’s depths/those waterlilies/red lotuses/white lotuses/as far as the very tips/as far as the roots/with cool water/overflow/arefilled up/are filled round/are mademore complete/are more pervaded/there is nothing for whole/waterlilies/red and whilte lotuses/with the cool water/untouched/ 102. 127 103. Puna ca paraṃ mahārāja bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṃ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 103. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso odātena vatthena sasīsaṃ pārupitvā nisinno assa, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa odātena vatthena apphuṭaṃ assa, evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti. Again/Great King/that bhikkhu/when thus/in a concentrated mind/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to knowing and seeing/the mind/direct/bends forward/He/thus/knows/this/my body/is a form/is a made of four great elements/is originated from mother and father/is continually renewed by so much boiled rice and juicy food/if beaing impermanent/ rubbing/breaking/shattering/conditions/This my consciousness is/in this place/attached it/Just as/Great King/a gem/a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/It is this/a person with bright eyesight/on hand/having put/observes as ‘this gem is/ a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/ 105. He/thus/when the mind is concentrated/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to creat a mindmaded body/the mind/leads/bends forward/he/from this body/another body/creat/a form/which is mind maded/along with all limbs and faculties/Just as/Great King/a person/from the sheath/the reed/draws out/It occurs to him/this is sheath/this is reed/one is the sheath/one is the reed/from sheath/just reed/pulled out/Just as/Great King/a person/a sword/from the scabbard/draws out/it occurs to him/this is the sword/this is the scabbard/one is the sword/one is the scabbard/from scabbard/just sword/is taken out/ Just as/Great King/a person/a snake/from its slough/take out/it occurs to him/this is the snake/this is the slough/one is the snake/one is the slough/from the slough/just the snake/is taken out 107. So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte manomayaṃ kāyaṃ abhinimminanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. So imamhā kāyā aññaṃ kāyaṃ abhinimmināti rūpiṃ manomayaṃ sabbaṅgapaccaṅgiṃ ahīnindriyaṃ. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso muñjamhā isikaṃ pavāheyya. Tassa evamassa: ayaṃ muñjo ayaṃ isikā añño muñjo aññā isikā muñjamhātveva isikā pavāḷhāti. Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja puriso asiṃ kosiyā pavāheyya. Tassa evamassa: \"ayaṃ asi ayaṃ kosi, añño asi aññā kosi, kosiyātveva asi pavāḷho\"ti. Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja puriso ahiṃ karaṇḍā uddhareyya. Tassa evamassa: \"ayaṃ ahi ayaṃ karaṇḍo, añño ahi añño karaṇḍo, karaṇḍātveva ahi ubbhato\"ti 108. He/thus/when the mind is concentrated/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/for psychic power/mind/leads/beds forward/He/various psychic power/experiences/He/being one/becomes many/becoming many/he becomes/one/becoming visible/becoming invisible/going through the fence/going through the wall/going through the mountain/unattachedly/goes/just as through the air/in earth/rising up/diving in/he does/just as in the water/even in the water/being not sinking/he goes/just as on earth/even on the sky/sitting cross-leged/he travels just as the winged bird/Both moon and sun/so potent though they be/so mighty though they be/with his hand/touches/strokes/as far as the world of celestials/with the body that he exercises power/ 109. So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatupakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte iddhividhāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. so anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhoti: eko’pi hutvā bahudhā hoti bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti, āvībhāvaṃ tirobhāvaṃ tirokuḍḍaṃ tiropākāraṃ tiropabbataṃ asajjamāno gacchati seyyathāpi ākāse, paṭhaviyā’pi ummujjanimujjaṃ karoti seyyathāpi udake, udake’pi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathāpi paṭhaviyaṃ, ākāse’pi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathā’pi pakkhi sakuṇo. Ime’pi candimasuriye evaṃmahiddhike evaṃmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati. Yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṃ vatteti. 110. Just as/Great King/a skilled potter or/potter’s attendant/with well-prepared clay/whatever/bowl shape/could design/that can make/that can produce/Just as/Great King/a skilled ivory-worker or/ivory-worker’s attendant/in well-prepared ivory task/whatever/ivory- shape/would wish to make/as it/can make/can produce/Just as/Great King/a skilled goldsmith or/goldsmith’s attendant/with well-prepared gold/whatever gold-shape/would wish to make/as it is/can make/can produce 110. Seyyathāpi mahārāja dakkho kumbhakāro vā kumbhakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatāya mattikāya yaṃ yadeva bhājanavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya – Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja dakkho dantakāro vā dantakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṃ dantasmiṃ yaṃ yadeva dantavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya – Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja dakkho suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṃ suvaṇṇasmiṃ yaṃ yadeva suvaṇṇavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya –

Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso addhānamaggapaṭipanno so suṇeyya bherisaddampi mudiṅgasaddampi saṅkhapaṇavadeṇḍimasaddampi, tassa evamassa: bherisaddo iti’pi mudiṅgasaddo iti’pi saṅkhapaṇavadeṇḍimasaddo iti’pi. Seyyathāpi mahārāja puriso sakamhā gāmā aññaṃ gāmaṃ gaccheyya tamhā’pi gāmā aññaṃ gāmaṃ gaccheyya. So tamhā gāmā sakaññeva gāmaṃ paccāgaccheyya. Tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ kho sakamhā gāmā amuṃ gāmaṃ agacchiṃ tatra evaṃ aṭṭhāsiṃ evaṃ nisīdiṃ evaṃ abhāsiṃ evaṃ tuṇahī ahosiṃ. Tamhāpi gāmā agacchiṃ tatrāpi evaṃ aṭṭhāsiṃ evaṃ nisīdiṃ evaṃ abhāsiṃ evaṃ tuṇhī ahosiṃ. So’mpi tamhā gāmā sakaññeva gāmaṃ paccāgato’ti.

Tattha cakkhumā puriso ṭhito passeyya manusse gehaṃ pavisante’pi rathiyā vītisañcarante’pi majjhe siṃghāṭake nisinne’pi, tassa evamassa: ete manussā gehaṃ pavisanti. Ete nikkhamanti. Seyyathāpi mahārāja pabbatasaṅkhepe udakarahado accho vippasanno anāvilo. Tattha cakkhumā puriso tīre ṭhito passeyya sippisambūkampi sakkharakaṭhalampi macchagumbampi carantampi tiṭṭhantampi. Tassa evamassa: ayaṃ kho udakarahado accho vippasanno anāvilo. Tatrime sippisambūkā’pi sakkharakaṭhalā’pi macchagumbā’pi carantipi tiṭṭhantipīti.

Seyyathāpi bhante nikujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhintīti, evameva bhante bhagavatā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ bhante bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gataṃ. Accayo maṃ bhante accagamā yathābālaṃ yathāmūḷhaṃ yathāakusalaṃ yo’haṃ pītaraṃ dhammikaṃ dhammarājānaṃ issariyassa kāraṇā jīvitā voropesiṃ. Tassa me bhante bhagavā accayaṃ accayato paṭiggaṇhātu āyatiṃ saṃvarāyā’ti. 130. When it is said thus/the kind of Magadha/Ajātasattu/the son of Vedehi Princess/to the Fortunate One/said thus/excellent Venerable/excellent Venerable/just as/venerable/what is over thrown/has been turned up/what is hidden/has been revealed/to who has lost the right road has been pointed out/in the darkness/an oil lamp has been held/ ‘so that one with clear sights, the forms can see’/as same as/by the Fortunate One/with various analizes/the dhamma was explained/Now/I/Venerable/to the Fortunate One/as my refuge/go/the dhamma and the bhikkhu saṅgha/As the lay devotee that I/the Venerable/let accept/from this day onward/as long as life endures/a fault by me/Venerable/has been committed/according to my foolishness/according to my ignorance/according to my unwholesome/the Sovran/the father/the righteous/the righteous king/with the mastership errection/from the life/was deprived/of my/the Venerable/the Fortunate One/the fault/may accept/as fault/in the future/will restrain/ 131. Surely you/Great King/a fault/having been committed/according to your foolishness/according to your ignorance/according to your unwholesome/that you/of the father/the righteous/the righteous king/the life deprived/however you/Great King/having seen the fault as fault/in accordance with the dhamma/make amend for a sin/as to that/now we accept/increasing/Great King/in noble discipline/he who/at the fault/having seen/in accordance with the dhamma /make amends for a sin/that in the future/would restrain/ 131. Taggha tvaṃ mahārāja accayo accagamā yathābālaṃ yathāmūḷhaṃ yathāakusalaṃ yo tvaṃ pitaraṃ dhammikaṃ dhammarājānaṃ jīvitā coropesi. Yato ca kho tvaṃ mahārāja accayaṃ accayato disvā yathādhammaṃ paṭikarosi. Tante mayaṃ paṭigaṇhāma. Vuddhi hesā mahārāja ariyassa vinaye yo accayaṃ accayato disvā yathādhammaṃ paṭikaroti āyatiṃ saṃvaraṃ āpajjatīti.
141 132. Evaṃ vutte rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: handa ca dāni mayaṃ bhante gacchāmi bahukiccā mayaṃ bahukaraṇīyā’ti. \"Yassa ’dāni tvaṃ mahārāja kālaṃ maññasī\"ti. 132. Sacāyaṃ bhikkhave rājā pitaraṃ dhammikaṃ dhammarājānaṃ jīvitā na voropessatha imasmiṃ yeva sāsane virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ uppajjissathāti. Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti. Sāmaññaphalasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ dutiyaṃ. 134. Then/the Fortunate One/right after the leaving away of the king of Magadha/Ajātasattu/the son of Vedehi Princess/addressed the bhukkhus/ ‘damaged/bhikkhus/was this king/destroyed/bhikkhus/was this king/if monks/the king/the father/the righteous one/the righteous king/from the life/would not deprive/in this very order/free from defilement/free from impurity/eye of the truth/will obtain/ When the Fortunate One said thus/delighted those bhikkhus/to the saying of the Fortunate one/were rejoiced/ The discourse of the Fruit of Recluces is ended/the second

Evaṃ me sutaṃ ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi yena icchānaṅgalaṃ nāma kosalānaṃ brāhmaṇagāmo tadavasari. Tatra sudaṃ bhagavā icchānaṅgale viharati icchānaṅgalavanasaṇḍe. 1. Thus I have heard/at one time/the Fortunate One/ in Kosala/was touring/great company of bhikkhus/together with five hundred bhikkhus/where the village, which is called Icchānaṅgala, a Kosala’s brahmin’s village/was entered there/There/the Fortunate One/at Icchānaṅgala/dwells/in the jungle thicket of Icchānaṅgala/ 2. At that time/the Brahmin Pokkharasāti/at Udakaṭṭha/was living/a populous place/full of grass, wood, water, and corn/the fits to be used by the king/which were given by the King Pasenadi’s Kosala/as a gift to be given to the Brahmin/It is heard by the Brahmin Pokkarasāti; 2. Tena kho pana samayena brāhmaṇo pokkharasātī ukkaṭṭhaṃ ajjhāvasati sattussadaṃ satiṇakaṭṭhodakaṃ sadhaññaṃ rājabhoggaṃ raññā pasenadinā kosalena dinnaṃ rājadāyaṃ brahmadeyyaṃ. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaṃ deseti ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. Sādhu kho pana tathārūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ hotī\"ti. 3. ‘Recluse/gentlemen/Gotama/the son of Sākya/from Sākyan clan/was ordained/ in Kosala/was touring/great company of bhikkhus/together with five hundred bhikkhus/where the village, which is called Icchānaṅgala, a Kosala’s brahmin’s village/was entered there/There/the Fortunate One/at Icchānaṅgala/dwells/in the jungle thicket of Icchānaṅgala/that Fortunate One/thus/the virtues fame has gone forth; Thus indeed is he/the Fortunate One/the Noble One/the Fully Enlightened One/the Perfect in knowledge and conduct/the Well-gone/the knower of world/the incomparable leader of men to be tamed/the Teacher of gods and men/the Awakened One/the Fortunate One/ He/this world including the heaven, Māra and Brahma,recluse and Brahmin’s progeny/that by himself/having well-realized/makes known/He/preaches the dhamma/which is beautiful in the beginning/beautiful in the middle/and beautiful in the end/with meaning/letters extremely complete/completely pure/chastity/declares/it is virtuous/then/to such a noble one/to pay visit 4. At that time/to the Brahmin Pokkharasāti/the young man, named Ambaṭṭha is the pupil/a student of Veda/a knower of mantras/who went beyond the Three Vedas, along with vocabulary, the ritual/the phonology, etymology/then the history as the fifth/the words/the grammar/the popular philosophy/the signs of the body of a great person/admitted and accepted by his master in Three Vedas with the word/what I know/you know it/what you know/I know it/ 4. Tena kho pana samayena brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa ambaṭṭho nāma māṇavo antevāsī hoti ajjhāyako mantadharo tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkharappabhedānaṃ itihāsapañcamānaṃ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo anuññātapaṭiññāto sake ācariyake tevijjake pāvacane yamahaṃ jānāmi taṃ tvaṃ jānāsi, yaṃ tvaṃ jānāsi tamahaṃ jānāmīti.

Atha kho brāhmaṇo pokkharasāti ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi: \"ayaṃ tāta ambaṭṭha samaṇo gotamo sakyaputto sakyakulā pabbajito kosalesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi icchānaṅgalaṃ anuppatto icchānaṅgale viharati icchānaṅgalavanasaṇḍe. Come/my son Ambaṭṭha/where the recluse Gotama/let approach there/Having approached/the recluse Gotama/could know/whether that recluse Gotama is having/such reputation gone forth/or not/whether that recluse Gotama is such one/or not/as so/that recluse Gotama/will know/
145 7. \"Yathā kathaṃ panāhaṃ bho taṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ jānissāmi yadi vā taṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ tathāsantaṃyeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā, yadi vā so bhavaṃ gotamo tādiso yadi vā na tādiso\"ti. 7. How would I/that recluse Gotama/know/whether that recluse Gotama is having/such reputation gone forth/or not/whether that recluse Gotama is such one/or not/as so/that recluse Gotama/will know/ 8. \"Āgatāni kho tāta ambaṭṭha amhākaṃ mantesu dvattiṃsamahāpurisalakkhaṇāni yehi samannāgatassa mahāpurisassa dveva gatiyo bhavanti anaññā: sace agāraṃ ajjhāvasati rājā hoti cakkavatti dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato. tassimāni sattaratanāni bhavanti. Seyyathīdaṃ: cakkaratanaṃ hatthiratanaṃ assaratanaṃ maṇiratanaṃ itthiratanaṃ gahapatiratanaṃ parināyakaratanameva sattamaṃ. Parosahassaṃ kho panassa puttā bhavanti sūrā vīraṅgarūpā parasenappamaddanā. So imaṃ paṭhaviṃ sāgarapariyantaṃ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhāvasati. 8. Bodily signs/my son Ambaṭṭha/in our mystic verses/thirty two characteristics of a great person/that of possessed by a great person/just two careers exist/not other/if he/at a house/inhabits/is the wheel-turning monarch/a righteous/the king of righteousness/the victor of four-endings/has attained a secure statue of his realm/ the possessor of seven jewels/to him/there are seven jewels/as follows;/the jewel of the wheel/the jewel of the elephant/the jewel of the horse/the jewel of the gems/the jewel of the woman/the jewel of the house holder/the jewel of the adviser as the seventh/over one thousands/to him/sons are/those are valiant/heroic/destroyers of the hostile armies/He/this earth/surrounded by the ocean/without penalty/without weapons/with the righteousness/having won/lives/
146 9. Sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati arahaṃ hoti sammāsambuddho loke vivattacchado. Ahaṃ kho pana tāta ambaṭṭha mantānaṃ dātā tvaṃ mantānaṃ paṭiggahetā\"ti. \"Evaṃ bho’ti kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā brāhmaṇaṃ pokkharasātiṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā vaḷavārathamāruyha sambahulehi māṇavehi saddhiṃ yena icchānaṅgalavanasaṇḍo tena pāyāsi. Yāvatikā yānassa bhūmi yānena gantvā yānā paccorohitvā pattiko’va ārāmaṃ pāvisi. 9. If he/from householder life/in a homelessness/would ordain/the noble/will be/the Fully- enlightened One/in the world/turns away the veil/Now I/my son/Ambaṭṭha, the young man/the giver of mystic verses/you are/of the mystic verses/the reciever’ Thus Sir/Ambaṭṭha, the young man/to the Brahmin Pokkharasāti/having greed/being stood from the seat/the Brahmin Pokkharasāti/having paid respect/to the right made salute/having assented to the chariot drown by the mares/along with many hundreds of young men/where the jungle thicket of Icchāmaṅgala/went forth there/as far as the carriage ground of the carriage can go/having gone/from chariot/having descended/on foot/to the monastery/entered/ 10. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhū abbhokāse caṅkamanti. Atha kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami. Upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etadavoca: \"kahannu kho bho etarahi so bhavaṃ gotamo viharati? Taṃ hi mayaṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya idhūpasaṅkantā\"ti. 10. At that time/many bhikkhus/in open air/were waking up and down/then Ambaṭṭha. The young man/where those bhikkhus/approached there/having approached/to those bhikkhus/said thus/where/gentlemen/now/Venerable Gotama is? Here/we/ the Venerable Gotama/to see/have approached 11. Atha kho tesaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ etadahosi: \"ayaṃ kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo abhiññātakolañño ceva abhiññātassa ca brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa antevāsī. Agaru kho pana bhagavato evarūpehi kulaputtehi saddhiṃ kathāsallāpo hotī\"ti. Te ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavocuṃ: \"eso ambaṭṭha vihāro saṃvutadvāro. Tena appasaddo upasaṅkamitvā ataramāno ālindaṃ pavisitvā ukkāsitvā aggaḷaṃ ākoṭehi. Vivarissati te bhagavā dvāranti. \" 11. Then/it occurred to those bhikkhus/this Ambaṭṭha, the young man from a good family/also a pupil of well-known Brahmin, Pokkharasāti/it is not a trouble/to the Fortunate One/with such a family man/the discussion/ they/to Ambaṭṭha, the young man/said thus/“there, Ambaṭṭha/the monastery/door is closed/therefore/without a noise/having approached slowly/to the terrace/having entered and cough out/the wooden bolt/knock upon/Will open/to you/the Fortunate One/the door”
147 12. Atha kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo yena so vihāro saṃvutadvāro tena appasaddo upasaṅkamitvā ataramāno ālindaṃ pavisitvā ukkāsitvā aggaḷaṃ ākoṭesi. Vivari bhagavā dvāraṃ. Pāvisi ambaṭṭho māṇavo. Māṇavakā’pi pavisitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ambaṭṭho pana māṇavo caṅkamanto’pi nisinnena bhagavatā kañci kañci kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāreti. Ṭhito’pi nisinnena bhagavatā kañci kañci kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāreti. 12. Therein/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/where the monastery/which door is closed/there/without a noise/having approached/slowly/to the terrace/having approached and cough out/the wooden bolt/knocked upon/Opened/the Fortunate One/the door/entered/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/the young man, too/having entered/with the Fortunate One/exchanged the friendship greetings/friendship greetings/having completed/in one side/sat down/Ambaṭṭha/the young man, too/while walking up and down/with the Fortunate One/who was sitting/ few words of politeness/exchanges/ while standing/with the Fortunate One who was sitting/few words of politeness/exchanges/ 13. Atha kho bhagavā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavoca: evannu kho te ambaṭṭha brāhmaṇehi vuddhehi mahallakehi ācariyapācariyehi saddhiṃ kathāsallāpo hoti yathayidaṃ caraṃ tiṭṭhaṃ nisinnena mayā kañci kañci kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāresī?\"Ti. 13. Then the Fortunate One/to Ambaṭṭha/the young man/asked thus/As this/you, Ambaṭṭha/with elderly brahmin teachers, too/is a discussion? As like/walking up and down/standing/with me, who is sitting/few words with politeness/did spend? 14. \"Nohidaṃ bho gotama. Gacchanto vā hi bho gotama gacchantena brāhmaṇo brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ sallapitumarahati. Ṭhito vā hi bho gotama ṭhitena brāhmaṇo brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ sallapitumarahati. Nisinno vā hi bho gotama nisinnena brāhmaṇo buhmaṇena saddhiṃ sallapitumarahati. Sayāno vā hi bho gotama sayānena brāhmaṇo brāhmaṇena saddhiṃ sallapitumarahati. Ye ca kho te bho gotama muṇḍakā samaṇakā ibbhā kaṇhā bandhupādāpaccā, tehipi me saddhiṃ evaṃ kathāsallāpo hoti yathariva bhotā gotamenā\"ti. 14. No/Dear Venerable/while going/Venerable Gotama/with a going one/a Brahmin/with a Brahmin/worthy to speak/while standing/Venerable Gotama/with standing/a Brahmin/with a Brahmin/worthy to speak/while sitting/Venerable Gotama/while sleeping/Venerable Gotama/with sleeping/a Brahmin/with Brahmin/worthy to speak/Whoever/other/Venerable Gotama/shaven-headeds/recluses/menials/black ones/offering from the foot of Brahma/with them/this type of speaking is there/as same as with the Venerable Gotama/
148 15. \"Atthikavato kho pana te ambaṭṭha idhāgamanaṃ ahosi. Yāyeva kho panatthāya āgaccheyyātho tameva atthaṃ sādhukaṃ manasi kareyyātho. Avusitavā yeva kho pana bho ayaṃ ambaṭṭho māṇavo, vusitamānī kimaññatra avusitattā\"ti. 15. Is there any reason/you Ambaṭṭha/that coming here/For whatever reason you have come here/that reason/having well remind/unperfected one/friend/this Ambaṭṭha is/who conceits as a perfect one/but nothing that unperfect 16. Atha kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo bhagavatā avusitavādena vuccamāno kupito anattamano bhagavantaṃyeva khuṃsento bhagavantaṃyeva vambhento bhagavantaṃyeva upavadamāno samaṇo ca me bho gotamo pāpito bhavissatīti bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: \"caṇḍā bho gotama sakyajāti, pharusā bho gotama sakyajāti, lahusā bho gotama sakyajāti, rabhasā bho gotama sakyājāti. Ibbhā santā ibbhā samānā na brāhmaṇe sakkaronti na brāhmaṇe garukaronti na brāhmaṇe mānenti na brāhmaṇe pūjenti na brāhmaṇe apacāyanti. Tayidaṃ bho gotama nacchannaṃ tayidaṃ nappaṭirūpaṃ yadime sakyā ibbhā santā ibbhā samānā na brāhmaṇe sakkaronti na brāhmaṇe garu karonti na brāhmaṇe mānenti na brāhmaṇe pūjenti na brāhmaṇe apacāyantīti. Itiha ambaṭṭho māṇavo idaṃ paṭhamaṃ sakkesu ibbhavādaṃ nipātesi. 16. Then/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/of the Fortunate One/in term of unperfected saying/was angry/unpleased minded/at the Fortunate One/at the Fortunate One/curses/at the Fortunate One/insults/at the Fortunate One/blames/ “Recluse Gotama/to me/a sinful one/will be/ to the Fortunate One/said thus/fierce/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/cruel/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/easily offended/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/wild /Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races/being of menial origin/being menials/not to the Brahmins/treat/not to the Brahmin/respect/not the Brahmins/admire/not to the Brahmin/worship/not the Brahmins/pay reverence/just this/Venerable Gotama/not suitable/not appropriate/these Sakyan being of menial origin/being menials/recluses/not the not to the Brahmins/treat/not to the Brahmins/respect/not the Brahmins/admire/not to the Brahmins/worship/not the Brahmins/pay reverence/
149 17. \"Kimpana te ambaṭṭha sakyā aparaddhunti?\" \"Eka midāhaṃ bho gotama samayaṃ ācariyassa brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa kenacideva karaṇīyena kapilavatthuṃ agamāsiṃ. Yena sakyānaṃ santhāgāraṃ tenupasaṅkamiṃ. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā sakyā ceva sakyakumārā ca santhāgāre uccesu āsanesu nisinnā honti aññamaññaṃ aṅgulipatodakehi sañjagghantā saṃkīḷantā aññadatthu mamaññeva maññe anujagghantā. Na maṃ koci āsanena’pi nimantesi. Tayidaṃ bho gotama nacchannaṃ, tayidaṃ nappaṭirūpaṃ, yadime sakyā ibbhā santā ibbhā samānā na brāhmaṇe sakkaronti na brāhmaṇe garukaronti na brāhmaṇe mānenti na brāhmaṇe pūjenti na brāhmaṇe apacāyantī\"ti. Itiha ambaṭṭho māṇavo idaṃ dutiyaṃ sakkesu ibbhavādaṃ nipātesi. 17. What/to you/Ambaṭṭha/the Sakyan/a guilt did? One day/I/Venerable Gotama/of the master, Brahmin Pokkharasāti/with some reason/went to Kapilavatthu/Where the Sakyans’ meeting hall, approached there/at that time/many Sakyans/also Sakyan Princes/in the meeting hall/on high seats/were sitting/to each other/nudging with fingers/jocking/playing/I think/it was myself/they were laughing at/None/me/with a seat/invited/just this/Venerable Gotama/is not suitable/just this/Venerable Gotama/is not appropriated/as/these Sakyans/are the Sakyan races are/cruel/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/easily offended/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/wild /Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races/being of menial origin/being menials/not to the Brahmins/treat/not to the Brahmins/respect/not the Brahmins/admire/not to the Brahmin/worship/not the Brahmins/pay reverence/ Thus said/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/this was the second/on Sakyans/the menial words/threw/ 18. \"Laṭukikāpi kho ambaṭṭha sakuṇikā sake kulāvake kāmalāpinī hoti. Sakaṃ kho panetaṃ ambaṭṭha sakyānaṃ yadidaṃ kapilavatthu. Na arahatāyasmā ambaṭṭho imāya appamattāya abhisajjituntī. \" 18. Even a quail/indeed/Ambaṭṭha/a little bird/in their own nest/can talk as she wishes/It is possible/Ambaṭṭha/to the Sakyans/that is in Kapilavatthu/It is not appropriated/Gentlemen Ambaṭṭha/with this trifling thing/to get angry/
150 19. \"Cattāro’me bho gotama vaṇṇā: khattiyā brāhmaṇā vessā suddā. Imesaṃ hi bho gotama catunnaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ tayo vaṇṇā khattiyā ca vessā ca suddā ca aññadatthu brāhmaṇasseva paricārikā sampajjanti. Tayidaṃ bho gotama nacchannaṃ tayidaṃ nappaṭirūpaṃ yadi me sakyā ibbhā santā ibbhā samānā na brāhmaṇe sakkaronti na brāhmaṇe karukaronti na brāhmaṇe mānenti na brāhmaṇe pūjenti na brāhmaṇe apacāyantī\"ti. Itiha ambaṭṭho māṇavo idaṃ tatiyaṃ sakkesu ibbhavādaṃ nipātesi. 19. There are four/Venerable Gotama/castes/the Khattiyas/the Brahmins/the merchants/the artisans/Among these/indeed/Venerable Gotama/four castes/three castes/the Khattiya/the merchants/the artisans/surely/of the Brahmins/becomes to be the servants/ just this/Venerable Gotama/is not suitable/just this/Venerable Gotama/is not appropriated/as/these Sakyans/are the Sakyan races are/cruel/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/easily offended/Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races are/wild /Venerable Gotama/the Sakyan races/being of menial origin/being menials/not to the Brahmins/treat/not to the Brahmin/respect/not the Brahmins/admire/not to the Brahmin/worship/not the Brahmins/pay reverence/ 20. Atha kho bhagavato etadahosi: atibāḷhaṃ kho ayaṃ ambaṭṭho māṇavo sakkesu ibbhavādena nimmāneti. Yannūnāhaṃ gottaṃ puccheyyenti. Atha kho bhagavā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavoca: ’kathaṃ gottosi ambaṭṭhā?Ti’ \"kaṇhāyano’hamasmi bho gotamā\"ti. 20. Then/to the Fortunate One/this was occurred/very foolish/indeed/this Ambaṭṭha/the young man/on the Sakyans/with abusing speaks/it is good/if I/the clan/would ask/then/the Fortunate One/to Ambaṭṭha, the young man/this was said/What is your clan Ambaṭṭha?
