Sakyā kho pana ambaṭṭha rājānaṃ okkākaṃ pitāmahaṃ dahanti. \"Bhūtapubbaṃ ambaṭṭha rājā okkāko yā sā mahesī piyā manāpā tassā puttassa rajjaṃ pariṇāmetukāmo jeṭṭhakumāre raṭṭhasmā pabbājesi ukkāmukhaṃ karakaṇḍaṃ hatthinikaṃ nipuraṃ. Te raṭṭhasmā pabbājitā himavantapasse pokkharaṇiyā tīre mahāsākasaṇḍo tattha vāsaṃ kappesuṃ. Te jātisambhedabhayā sakāhi bhaganīhi saddhiṃ saṃvāsaṃ kappesuṃ. 21. 152 23. Rañño ca kho pana ambaṭṭha okkākassa disā nāma dāsī ahosi. Sā kaṇhaṃ nāma janesi. Jāto kaṇho pabyāhāsi: \"dhovatha maṃ amma, nahāpetha maṃ amma, imasmā maṃ amma asucismā parimocetha, atthāya vo bhavissāmī\"ti. 23. To the king/Ambaṭṭha/Okkāka/named Disa/was a female slave/she/Kaṇha as name/gave a birth/Having being born/Kaṇha spoke thus/wash me/mother/bathe me/mother/from this/me/mother/from impurity/release/for the sake of you/I’ll be” 24. Sace tvaṃ na vyākarissasi aññena vā aññaṃ paṭicarissasi, tuṇhī vā bhavissasi, pakkamissasi vā, ettheva te sattadhā muddhā phalissati. Taṃ kiṃ maññasi ambaṭṭha? Kinti te sutaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ vuddhānaṃ mahallakānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ kutopabhūtikā kaṇhāyanā? Ko ca kaṇhāyanānaṃ pubbapuriso?Ti. Evaṃ vutte ambaṭṭho māṇavo tuṇhī ahosi. Dutiyampi kho bhagavā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavoca: taṃ kimmaññasi ambaṭṭha? Kinti te sutaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ vuddhānaṃ mahallakānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ kukopabhūtikā kaṇhāyanā? Ko ca kaṇhāyanānaṃ pubbapuriso?Ti dutiyampi kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo tuṇhī ahosi. Atha kho bhagavā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ etadavoca: vyākarohi ’dāni ambaṭṭha, na ’dāni te tuṇhībhāvassa kālo. Yo kho ambaṭṭha tathāgatena yāvatatiyakaṃ sahadhammikaṃ pañhaṃ puṭṭho na vyākaroti etthevassa sattadhā muddhā phalissati. 29. When asked thus/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/was silent/in second, too/the Blesssed One/to Ambaṭṭha/the young man/said thus/ What do you think/Ambaṭṭha/Have you heard/from great age/venerable/masters/masters of the masters/where was originated/the Kaṇhāyanas? Who was/of the Kaṇhāyanas/ancestor? In second time, too/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/was silent/ Then/the Fortunate One/to Ambaṭṭha/the young man/said thus/answer now/Ambaṭṭha it is not/to you/to be silence/the time/Whoever/Ambaṭṭha/by the Tathāgata/a co-religionist question/being asked/does not answer/in this place/his/into seven pieces/his head/will split up 30. Tena kho pana samayena vajirapāṇi yakkho mahantaṃ ayokūṭaṃ ādāya ādittaṃ sampajjalitaṃ sajotibhūtaṃ ambaṭṭhassa māṇavassa uparivehāsaṃ ṭhito hoti: sacāyaṃ ambaṭṭho māṇavo bhagavatā yāvatatiyakaṃ sahadhammikaṃ pañhaṃ puṭṭho na vyākarissati etthevassa sattadhā muddhaṃ phālessāmīti. Taṃ kho pana vajirapāṇiṃ yakkhaṃ bhagavā ceva passati ambaṭṭho ca māṇavo. 30. At that time/Vajirapāṇi/ the demon/a huge iron club/having taken/which is burning/flaming/blazing/of Ambaṭṭha/the young man/over in the air/is standing/if this Ambaṭṭha/the young man/by the Fortunate One/until third/co-religionist question/being asked/will not answer/in this place/his/into seven pieces/head/will split up/that Vajirapāṇi demon/the Blessed One/does see/and also Ambaṭṭha/the young man

Atha kho ambaṭṭho māṇavo bhīto saṃviggo lomahaṭṭhajāto bhagavantaṃyeva tāṇagavesī bhagavantaṃyeva leṇagavesī bhagavantaṃyeva saraṇagavesi upanisīditvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: \"kiṃ me taṃ bhavaṃ gotamo āha? Puna bhavaṃ gotamo bravītū\"ti. \"Taṃ kimmaññasī ambaṭṭha? Kinti te sutaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ vuddhānaṃ mahallākānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ bhāsamānānaṃ, kutoppabhūtikā kaṇhāyanā? Ko ca kaṇhāyanānaṃ pubbapuriso?Ti. \" \"Evameva me bho gotama sutaṃ, yatheva bhavaṃ gotamo āha. Tatoppabhūtikā kaṇhāyanā. So ca kaṇhāyanānaṃ pubbapuriso\"ti. 31. Who was/of the Kaṇhāyanas/ancestor? As it is/I have/Venerable Gotama/heard/as Venerable Gotama/said/it was the origin of the Kaṇhāyanas/he was/of the Kaṇhāyanas/ancestor/ 32. Evaṃ vutte te māṇavakā unnādino uccāsaddamahāsaddā ahesuṃ: \"dujjāto kira bho ambaṭṭho māṇavo, akulaputto kira bho ambaṭṭho māṇavo, dāsiputto kira bho ambaṭṭho māṇavo sakyānaṃ, ayyaputtā kira bho ambaṭṭhassa māṇavassa sakyā bhavanti. Dhammavādiṃ yeva kira mayaṃ samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ apasādetabbaṃ amaññimhā\"ti. 32. When thus being spoken/those young men/shouted out/were raised loud noise/is ill- born/gentlemen/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/ is not a good family/gentlemen/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/is not a well-educated/gentlemen/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/ is a son of a female slave of Sakyans/gentlemen/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/Masters/surely/of Ambaṭṭha/the young man/are the Sakyans/truth speaker is the recluse Gotama/could be disparaged/we didn’t think/
156 33. Atha kho bhagavato etadahosi: \"atibāḷhaṃ kho ime māṇavakā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ dāsiputtavādena nimmānenti. Yannūnāhaṃ parimoceyyanti. \"Atha kho bhagavā te māṇavake etadavoca: \"mā kho tumhe māṇavakā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ atibāḷhaṃ dāsiputtavādena nimmānetha. Uḷāro so kaṇho isi ahosi. So dakkhiṇaṃ janapadaṃ gantvā brahme mante adhīyitvā rājānaṃ okkānaṃ upasaṅkamitvā maṭṭharūpiṃ dhītaraṃ yāci. Tassa rājā okkāko ’ko neva re ayaṃ mayhaṃ dāsiputto samāno maṭṭharūpiṃ dhītaraṃ yācatī’ti kupito anattamano khurappaṃ sannayhi. So taṃ khurappaṃ neva asakkhi muñcituṃ, no paṭisaṃharituṃ. 33. Then/to the Fortunate One/it occurred as/very strongly/indeed/these young men/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/with speaking of son of a slave-girl/call upon/It is good if I make it clear/then the Fortunate One/to those young men/said thus/“do not/you young men/Ambaṭṭha/the young man/strongly/speak of the son of slave-girl/call upon”/there was a noble Kaṇha, the sage/He/having gone to the southern country/the Brahmanic mystic verses/having studied/to the King Okkāka/being approached/Maddarūpi/the daughter of king/begged/ To him/the King Okkāka ‘who is/this fellow/the son of my slave- girl/Maddarūpi/my daughter/begs’ as being angry and displeased mind/the arrow/put on his bow/he/that arrow/was unable to shoot/or withdraw it/ 34. Atha kho māṇavakā amaccā pārisajjā kaṇhaṃ isiṃ upasaṅkamitvā etadavocuṃ: \"sotthi bhadante hotu rañño, sotthi bhadante hotu rañño\"ti. \"Sotthi bhavissati rañño, api ca rājā yadi adho khurappaṃ muñcissati yāvatā rañño vijitaṃ ettāvatā paṭhavī udrīyissatī\"ti. \"Sotthi bhadante hotu rañño, sotthi janapadassā\"ti. \"Sotthi bhavissati rañño, sotthi janapadassa. Api ca rājā yadi uddhaṃ khurappaṃ muñcissati yāvatā rañño vijitaṃ ettāvatā sattavassāni devo na vassissatī\"ti. \"Sotthi bhadante hotu rañño, sotthi janapadassa, devo ca vassatū\"ti. 34. Then/the young men, the ministers/counselors/to Kaṇha, the sage/having approached said thus/May/Venerable/the king be safe/may /Venerable/the king be safe/ The king will be safe/but if the king/to the down/the arrow/will shoot/as far as his kingdom extends/till that the earth will quake/ May/Venerable/king be safe/also be safe/the country The king will be safe/also the country/but if the King/to air/the arrow will shoot/as far as his kingdom last/seven years/rain will not fall/ May/Venerable/the king be safe/be safe the country/may rain fall/
157 35. \"Sotthi bhavissati rañño, sotthi janapadassa, devo ca vassissati. Api ca rājā jeṭṭhakumāre khurappaṃ patiṭṭhāpetu, sotthi kumāro, pallomo bhavissatī\"ti. Atha kho māṇavakā, amaccā okkākassa ārocesuṃ: \"devo jeṭṭhakumāre khurappaṃ patiṭṭhāpetu, sotthi kumāro pallomo bhavissatī\"ti. Atha kho rājā okkāko jeṭṭhakumāre khurappaṃ patiṭṭhāpesi. Sotthi kumāro pallomo bhavi. 35. Atha kho tassa rājā okkāko bhīto saṃviggo lomahaṭṭhajāto brahmadaṇḍena tajjito maṭṭharūpiṃ dhītaraṃ adāsi. Mā kho tumhe māṇavakā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ atibāḷhaṃ dāsiputtavādena nimmānetha. Uḷāro so kaṇho isi ahosi. Atha kho bhagavā ambaṭṭhaṃ māṇavaṃ āmantesi: \"taṃ kimmaññasi ambaṭṭha? Idha khattiyakumāro brāhmaṇakaññāya saddhiṃ saṃvāsaṃ kappeyya, tesaṃ saṃvāsamanvāya putto jāyetha, yo so khattiyakumārena brāhmaṇakaññāya putto uppanno, api nu so labhetha brāhmaṇesu āsanaṃ vā udakaṃ vā?’Ti, 36. Idha brāhmaṇakumāro khattiyakaññāya saddhiṃ saṃvāsaṃ kappeyya, tesaṃ saṃvāsamanvāya putto jāyetha, yo so brāhmaṇakumārena khattiyakaññāya putto uppanno, api nu so labhetha brāhmaṇesu āsanaṃ vā udakaṃ vā?\"Ti \"Labhetha bho gotama\". 38. Here/Ambaṭṭha/Tathāgata/in the world/arises/a Noble One/the Fully Enlightened One/the processor of knowledge and conduct/the Well-gone-one/the knower of the world/the incomparable leader of men to be tamed/the teacher of god and men/the awakened/the Fortunate One/ He/this world including the heaven, Māra and Brahma,recluse and Brahmin’s progeny/ that by himself/having well-realized/makes known/He/preaches the dhamma/which is beautiful in the beginning/beautiful in the middle/and beautiful in the end/with meaning/letters extremely complete/completely pure/chastity/declares/ 49. Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapatiputto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto. So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati. So tena saddhāpaṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisaṃcikkhati: \"sambādho gharāvāso rajopatho abbhokāso pabbajjā. Nayidaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekantaparipuṇṇaṃ ekantaparisuddhaṃ saṃkhalikhitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ carituṃ, yannūnāhaṃ kesamassuṃ ohāretthā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyya\"nti. 49. So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya appaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati. So evaṃ pabbajito samāno pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī. Samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu kāyakammavacīkammena samannāgato kusalena, parisuddhājīvo sīlasampanno indriyesu guttadvāro bhojane mattaññū satisampajaññena samannāgato santuṭṭho. 50. Kathañca ambaṭṭha bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti? 51. How does/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/observe the morality? 52. Adinnādānaṃ pahāya adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti. Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti. Yā sā vācā nelā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā tathārūpiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 57. Rude speech/being abandoned/from rude speech/abstained/whatever words without fault/pleasant to the ear/lovely/reaching to the heart/polite/pleasant to the many people/beloved by many people/such type of speech/speaks/This is one if the moralities 58. Frivolous talk/having abandoned/from frivolous speech/abstained/speaks at right time/speaks at fact/meaningful speaker/truth speaker/speaks of discipline/speaks to be treasured/ seasonable/defined/connected with the meaning/This is one of the moralities

Hatthigavāssavaḷavapaṭiggahaṇā paṭivirato hoti. Khettavatthupaṭiggahaṇā paṭivirato hoti. Dūteyyapahiṇagamanānuyogā paṭivirato hoti. Kayavikkayā paṭivirato hoti. Tulākūṭakaṃsakūṭamānakūṭā paṭivirato hoti. Ukkoṭanavañcananikatisāciyogā paṭivirato hoti. Chedanavadhabandhanaviparāmosaālopasahasākārā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 59. He/seed and crops’ damaging is abstained/Who takes one meal/ is abstained from taking meals at night/dancing, signing/playing/watching shows/is abstained/ garlends/perfumes/cosmetics/ornaments/adormnets/using is abstained/ higher/wide beds/abstained/acceptance of silver and gold/is abstained/acceptance of raw grain/is abstained/ acceptance of raw flesh/is abstained/acceptance of woman, young girls/is abstained/ acceptance of male or female slaves/is abstained/acceptance of goats/is abstained/acceptance of cocks, pigs/abstained/acceptance of elephants, oxen, horses, mares/is abstained/acceptance of fileds, farm/is abstained/from following as a messenger/is abstained/from buying and selling/is abstained/from false weighing, false coining, false measuring/is abstained/ from crooked, cheating, deceiting, insincere practices/is abstained/from cutting, killing, imprisoning, highway robbery, taking foods by forse/is abstained/ This is one of the morality 60. Whereas/gentlemen/some recluses and Brahmins/having eaten the foods that offered with faith/they/with killing these type of seeds and crops/practicing/dwell/as follows/root’s seed/stem’s seed/joint’s seed/cutting’s seed/seed’s seed/the five kind of seeds/from this or/this type of seeds/crops/injuring/abstained/This is the one of moralities 60. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpā bījagāmabhūtagāmasamārambhaṃ anuyuttā viharanti, seyyathīdaṃ: mūlabījaṃ khandhabījaṃ phaḷubījaṃ aggabījaṃ bījabījameva pañcamaṃ. Iti evarūpā bījagāmabhūtagāmasamārambhā paṭivirato hoti idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ.

Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpā visūkadassanaṃ anuyuttā viharanti seyyathīdaṃ: naccaṃ gītaṃ vāditaṃ pekkhaṃ akkhānaṃ pāṇissaraṃ vetālaṃ kumbhathūnaṃ sobhanagarakaṃ caṇḍālaṃ vaṃsaṃ dhovanaṃ hatthiyuddhaṃ assayuddhaṃ mahisayuddhaṃ usabhayuddhaṃ ajayuddhaṃ meṇḍayuddhaṃ kukkuṭayuddhaṃ vaṭṭakayuddhaṃ daṇḍayuddhaṃ muṭṭhiyuddhaṃ nibbuddhaṃ uyyodhikaṃ balaggaṃ senābyuhaṃ aṇīkadassanaṃ. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpā jūtappamādaṭṭhānānuyogaṃ anuyuttā viharanti. Seyyathīdaṃ: aṭṭhapadaṃ dasapadaṃ ākāsaṃ parihārapathaṃ santikaṃ khalikaṃ ghaṭikaṃ salākahatthaṃ akkhaṃ paṅgacīraṃ vaṅkakaṃ mokkhacikaṃ ciṅgulakaṃ pattāḷhakaṃ rathakaṃ dhanukaṃ akkharikaṃ manesikaṃ yathāvajjaṃ. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpaṃ uccāsayanamahāsayanaṃ anuyuttā viharanti, seyyathīdaṃ: āsandiṃ pallaṅkaṃ gonakaṃ cittakaṃ paṭikaṃ paṭalikaṃ tulikaṃ vikatikaṃ uddalomiṃ ekantalomiṃ kaṭṭhissaṃ koseyyaṃ kuttakaṃ hatthattharaṃ assattharaṃ rathattharaṃ ajinappaveṇiṃ kādalimigapavarapaccattharaṇaṃ sauttaracchadaṃ ubhatolohitakupadhānaṃ - iti vā iti evarūpā uccāsayanamahāsayanā paṭivirato hoti. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpaṃ viggāhikakathaṃ anuyuttā viharanti, seyyathīdaṃ: na tvaṃ imaṃ dhammavinayaṃ ājānāsi. Ahaṃ imaṃ dhammavinayaṃ ājānāmi. Kiṃ tvaṃ imaṃ dhammavinayaṃ ājānissasi? Micchāpaṭipanno tvamasi, ahamasmi sammāpaṭinno. Sahitamme1 asahitanne. Iti vā evarūpā dūteyyapahiṇagamanānuyogā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 44. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te kuhakā ca honti lapakā ca nemittikā ca nippesikā ca lābhena lābhaṃ nijigiṃsitāro ca. Iti vā itievarūpā kuhanalapanā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 45. Iti vā iti evarūpāya tiracchānavijjāya micchājīvā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 50. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpāya tiracchānavijjāya micchājīvena jīvikaṃ kappenti seyyathīdaṃ: āvāhanaṃ vivāhanaṃ saṃvadanaṃ vivadanaṃ saṃkiraṇaṃ vikiraṇaṃ subhagakaraṇaṃ dubbhagakaraṇaṃ viruddhagabbhakaraṇaṃ jivhānitthambhanaṃ hanusaṃhananaṃ hatthābhijappanaṃ hanujappanaṃ kaṇṇajappanaṃ ādāsapañhaṃ kumāripañhaṃ devapañhaṃ ādiccupaṭṭhānaṃ mahatupaṭṭhānaṃ abbhujjalanaṃ sirivhāyanaṃ. Yathā vā paneke bhonto samaṇabrāhmaṇā saddhādeyyāni bhojanāni bhuñjitvā te evarūpāya tiracchānavijjāya micchājīvena jīvikaṃ kappenti - seyyathīdaṃ: santikammaṃ paṇidhikammaṃ bhūrikammaṃ vassakammaṃ vossakammaṃ vatthukammaṃ vatthuparikiraṇaṃ ācamanaṃ nahāpanaṃ juhanaṃ vamanaṃ virecanaṃ uddhavirecanaṃ adhovirecanaṃ sīsavirecanaṃ kaṇṇatelaṃ nettapatappanaṃ natthukammaṃ añjanaṃ paccañjanaṃ sālākiyaṃ sallakattiyaṃ dārakatikicchā mūlabhesajjānaṃ anuppadānaṃ osadhīnaṃ paṭimokkho. Iti vā iti evarūpāya tiracchānavijjāya micchājīvā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. 52. Whereas/gentlemen/some recluses and Brahmins/having eaten the foods that offered with faith/they/with such type of low art/with such type of wrong livelihood/life/lead/as follows/pacification/payment of a vow/making earth-house spell/making causing virility/making impotent/consecrating building/consecrating site/ rising water/bathing/sacrificing/vomiting/ purging/action of an emetic/action of a purgative/purging up/purging below/ purging the head/anointing ear with oil/conducting with eyes/nose treatment/eye treatment/anointing/using balms/using bals er the side effect of previous remedies/ ophthalmology/ working on poison arrow/infant healing/remedy with root/administering/bearing of balm/purgative remedy/thus/ from such type of low art/from such type of wrong livelihood/abstained/this is one of the moralities 53. Atha kho so ambaṭṭha bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha khattiyo muddhāvasitto nihatapaccāmitto na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ paccatthikato, evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. So iminā ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajjasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Evaṃ kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti. 53. Then/Ambaṭṭha/the bhikkhu/thus/being a virtuous one/does not see fear from anywhere/owing to the restrained of morality/just as/Great King/a king/being properly anointed/driven out all enemies/does not see a fear from anywhere/owing to the destruction of enemies/as so/a bhikkhu/ thus/endowed with morality/do not see fear from anywhere/owing to the restrained of morality/he/with this mass of noble morality/being endowed/internal happiness of truthworthy/experiences/ thus/Great King/a bhikkhu/is observed the morality
176 54. Kathañca ambaṭṭha bhikkhu indirayesu gutatadvāro hoti? Idha ambaṭṭha bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ cakkhundriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati cakkhundriyaṃ, cakkhundriya saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ sotendriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati sotendriyaṃ, sotendriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Ghāṇena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ ghānindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati ghāṇindriyaṃ, ghāṇindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ jivhindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati jivhindriyaṃ, jivhindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phusitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ kāyindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati kāyindriyaṃ, kāyindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ manindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati rakkhati manindriyaṃ, manindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. So iminā ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ abyāsekasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Evaṃ kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu indriyesu guttadvāro hoti. 54. Idha ambaṭṭha bhikkhu abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti, ālokite vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, samiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti, saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti, asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī hoti, gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti. Evaṃ kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu satisampajaññena samannāgato hoti. 55. How/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/does process with mindfulness and self-possession? Here/Great King/a bhikkhu/in going forward and backward/acts with fully awareness/in looking forward and backward/acts with fully awareness/in bending back and stretching out/acts with fully awareness/in putting on outer robe,taking alms-bowl, putting on robe/acts with fully awareness/in eating,drinking,chewing,tasting/acts with fully awareness/in going for faeces and urine/acts with fully awareness/in going, standing,sitting,sleeping,awakening, speaking. Keeping silence/acts with fully awareness/thus/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/is processed with mindfulness and self-possession 56. Kathañca ambaṭṭha bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti? Idha ambaṭṭha bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena. So yena yeneva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati. Seyyathāpī ambaṭṭha pakkhi sakuṇo yena yeneva ḍeti sapattabhāro’va ḍeti, evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena. So yena yeneva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati. Evaṃ kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti. 56. How/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/is a contended? So iminā ca ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena satisampajaññena samannāgato imāya ca ariyāya santuṭṭhiyā samannāgato vivittaṃ senāsanaṃ bhajati araññaṃ rukkhamūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhaṃ susānaṃ vanapatthaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ. So pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. 57. He/with this noble section of morality/is endowed/ with this noble restraining of senses/is endowed/with this noble mindfulness and self awareness/is endowed/with this noble contentment/is endowed/secluded dwelling place/associates/a forest/a foot of a tree/a mountain/ a grotto of a slope of mountain/a rock cave/a cemetery/a place far away in a forest/an open air/a heap of straw/He/after meal/abstained from going for alms collecting/sits/having bent a cross- legs/having erected body/having directed mindfulness to front/ 58. So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya vigatābhijjhena cetasā viharati abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti. Byāpādapadosaṃ pahāya abyāpannacitto viharati sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampi, byāpādapadosā cittaṃ parisodheti. Thīnamiddhaṃ pahāya vigatathīnamiddho viharati ālokasaññī sato sampajāno, thīnamiddhā cittaṃ parisodheti. Uddhaccakukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati ajjhattaṃ vūpasantacitto, uddhaccakukkuccaṃ cittaṃ parisodheti. Vicikicchaṃ pahāya tiṇṇavicikiccho viharati akathaṃkathī kusalesu dhammesu, vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti. 58. He/having abandoned/in the world/the greediness/with the mind which has no greedy/dwells/from the greediness/purifies the mind/having abandoned/the corruption of hatred/being a non-hatred/he dwells/from the corruption of hatred/purifies the mind/Having abandoned/the sloth and drowsiness/being one who free from sloth and drowsiness/dwells/being conscious of light/mindful and self-awareness/from sloth and drowsiness/purifies the mind/having abandoned restlessness and worry/with one’s heart calmness/being inward calm minded/from restlessness and worry/purifies the mind/Having abandoned/the doubt/being one who distructed the doubt/dwells/being not saying how and how is this/in wholesome qualities/from doubt/purifies the mind/

Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojeyya tassa te kammantā samijjheyyuṃ, so yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantīkareyya, siyā cassa uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāya, tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ kho pubbe iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojesiṃ tassa me te kammantā samijjhiṃsu so’haṃ yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantīakāsiṃ. Atthi ca me uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāyā’ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ. 59. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a person/having taken a loan/ in business/would invest/his those business would be successful/ he/whatever old loans/these loans/ would remove/if there any money has been left/would for feeding his wife/to him it occurs as as “I/before/having taken a loan/in business/invested/my that businesses were successful/I whatever/old loaned money/those loans/have removed(paid back), it is left/the rest of amount/for feeding my wife/he/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” 60. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso ābādhiko assa dukkhito bāḷhagilāno, bhattaṃ cassa nacchādeyya, na cassa kāye balamattā. So aparena samayena tambhā ābādhā mucceyya bhattañcassa chādeyya siyā cassa kāye balamattā. Tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ bo pubbe ābādhiko ahosiṃ dukkhito bāḷhagilāno bhattaṃ me nacchādesi na cassa me āsi kāye balamattā. So’mhi etarahi tamhā ābādhā mutto bhattañca me chādeti atthi ca me kāye balamattā’ti, so tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ. 60. Just as/ Ambaṭṭha /a person/might be sick/ suffered/ seriously ill/his food/would not digest/has no any strength in his body/he/after a time/from that sickness/would rise up/food also would digest/has strength in his body/it occurs to him as “I/before/was sick/was suffered/was seriously sick/food was not digest/was no any strength in my body/I am now/from that sickness/released/food also digest/there is strength in my body/ he/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” 61. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso bandhanāgāre baddho assa, so aparena samayena tambhā bandhanāgārā mucceyya sotthinā abbayena, na cassa kiñci bhogānaṃ vayo. Tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ kho pubbe bandhanāgāre baddho ahosiṃ. So’mhi etarahi tamhā bandhanāgārā mutto sotthinā abbayena. Natthi ca me kiñci bhogānaṃ vayo’ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ. 61. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a person/in the jail/ might be put/he/after a time/from that jail/released well/with alive/there was no loss of his wealths/it occurs in him as “I/before/in jail/was put/I/now/from that jail/was released well/with alive/there is no any loss of my wealths”/ He/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness”
180 62. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso dāso assa anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo. So aparena samayena tamhā dāsabyā mucceyya attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo. Tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ kho pubbe dāso ahosiṃ anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo. So’mhi etarahi tamhā dāsabyā mutto attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo’ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ. 62. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a person might be a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to go where he wishes to go/he/after a time/from that slavery status/would release/being a self dependent not being a dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever he wishes to go/it occurs him as “I/before/was a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to go wherever I wish to go/that I/now/from that slavery status/am free/a self dependent but not dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever wish to go”. He/ as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” 63. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhānamaggaṃ paṭipajjeyya dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭibhayaṃ. So aparena samayena taṃ kantāraṃ nitthareyya sotthinā gāmantaṃ anupāpuṇeyya khemaṃ appaṭibhayaṃ. Tassa evamassa: ’ahaṃ kho pubbe sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhānamaggaṃ paṭipajjiṃ dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭibhayaṃ. So’mhi etarahi taṃ kantāraṃ tiṇṇo sotthinā gāmantaṃ anuppatto khemaṃ appaṭibhaya’nti. So tato nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ. 63. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a person/along with the money and wealth/to the desert road/might be get/which is famine/is dangerous/he/after a time/that desert/would pass through well/to a village/would arrive/which is free/no dangerous/to him/it occurs as “I/before/along with money and wealth/to the desert road/was got in/which a famine/is dangerous/that’s me/now/that desert have crossed well/to the village/have arrived/which is free/which has no danger/he/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” Evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu yathā iṇaṃ yathā rogaṃ yathā bandhanāgāraṃ yathā dāsabyaṃ yathā kantāraddhānamaggaṃ evaṃ ime pañcanīvaraṇe appahīne attani samanupassati. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha ānaṇyaṃ yathā ārogyaṃ yathā bandhanā mokkhaṃ yathā bhujissaṃ yathā khemantabhūmiṃ evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu ime pañcanīvaraṇe pahīne attani samanupassati.
181 64. Tassime pañcanīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassato pāmojjaṃ jāyati, pamuditassa pīti jāyati, pītimanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaṃ vedeti, sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati. 64. Of the one/five hindrances/have removed/one’s self/pervives/gladness arises/ of one who glad/delight/arises/of one who is in a delightful mind/body becomes calm/Calmness body/happiness/esperiences/of one who is happy/mind becomes concentration/ 65. So vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ vivekajena pītisukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa vivekajena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 65. He/separating one’s self from desires/being separated from unwholesome/accompanied by reasoning/accompanied by investigation/arose by the freedom/happiness of delight/to the first absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/originated by rest/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/ 66. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha dakkho nahāpako vā nahāpakantevāsī vā kaṃsathāle nahānīyacuṇṇāni ākiritvā udakena paripphosakaṃ paripphosakaṃ sanneyya, sāyaṃ nahānīyapiṇḍī snehānugatā snehaparetā sāntarabāhirā phuṭā snehena, na ca pagghariṇī. Evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ vivekajena pītisukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa vivekajena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti caraṇasmiṃ. 66. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a skillful bath attendant or/his assistant/in a metal basin/bathing powder/having spreaded out/wth the water/sprinkling all around/sprinkling all around/will knead/in the evening/the ball of lather/taking up the oil/drenched with it/pervaded by it/spread with oil/there is no flowing forth or out/ As same as/Ambattha/a bhikkhu/ this very body/originated by rest/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothingin whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouchedsdf/This also is in his conduct
182 67. Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha bhikkhu vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ samādhijena pītisukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa samādhijena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 67. Agaian/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/separating one’s self from desires/being separated from unwholesome/accompanied by reasoning/accompanied by investigation/arose by the freedom/happiness of delight/to the second absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/originated by concentration/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in in whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/ 68. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha udakarahado gambhīro ubbhidodako, tassa nevassa puratthimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na dakkhiṇāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na pacchimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na uttarāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, devo ca na kālena kālaṃ sammā dhāraṃ anuppaveccheyya, atha kho tamhā ca udakarahadā sītā vāridhārā ubbhijjitvā tameva udakarahadaṃ sītena vārinā abhisanneyya parisanneyya paripūreyya paripphareyya, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato udakarahadassa sītena vārinā apphuṭaṃ assa. Evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ samādhijena pītisukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa samādhijena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti caraṇasmiṃ. 68. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a lake of water/deep/springing up/nowhere/at southern direction/of the water/entrance/nowhere at/western direction/of water/entrance/nowhere at/northern direction/of water/entrance/the rain/does not/in right time/proper rain water/suppy/but/from that same lake of water/cool/torrents of water/having spring up/that same late of water/with cool water/would flow out/would flow round/would complete/would pervade/there is nothing in whole/of the torrents of water/by cool water/untouched/ as same as/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikhu/this very body/originated by concentration/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in in whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/This is also in his conduct

Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato sampajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti, yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukhavihārīti taṃ tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Again/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/from the gladness/being abstained/ being an equal/dwells/being mindful and aware/happiness/with body/experiences/What him/noble persons/call:One who is equanimity mindfulness/is dwelling with happiness/to third absorption/having attained/dwells/ He/this very body/with happiness without gladness/is filled up/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in whole body/with happiness without gladness/is untouched Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha uppaliniyaṃ vā paduminiyaṃ vā puṇḍarīkiniyaṃ vā appekaccāni uppalāni vā padumāni vā puṇḍarīkāni vā udake jātāni udake saṃvaddhāni udakānuggatāni antonimuggaposīni tāni yāva caggā yāva ca mūlā sītena cārinā abhisannāni parisannāni3 paripūrāni paripphuṭāni nāssa kiñci sabbāvataṃ uppalānaṃ vā padumānaṃ vā puṇḍarīkānaṃ vā sītena vārinā apphuṭaṃ assa, Evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti caraṇasmiṃ. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/in a pond of waterlily pond/or in a pond of red lotus/ or in a pond of white lotus/or in some another pond/waterlilies or/red lotuese or/whote lotuses or/those who are born in the water/gorwing up in the water/not growing out of the water/are fed from the water’s depths/those waterlilies/red lotuses/white lotuses/as far as the very tips/as far as the roots/with cool water/overflow/arefilled up/are filled round/are made more complete/are more pervaded/there is nothing for whole/waterlilies/red and whilte lotuses/with the cool water/untouched/ As same as/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/this very body/happened without gladness/is filled up/is filled round/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in whole/of body/happiness without gladness/untouched/ This is also in his conduct
184 70. Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṃ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso odātena vatthena sasīsaṃ pārupitvā nisinno assa, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa odātena vatthena apphuṭaṃ assa, evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti caraṇasmiṃ. Idaṃ kho taṃ ambaṭṭha caraṇaṃ. Again/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/having given up happiness/having given pain/with the disappearance of former gladness and pain of mind/neither pan nor happiness/purified by equanimity and mindfulness/to the fourth absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/with purified mental clarification/having pervaded/sits/There is nothing in whole/of the body/with purified mental clarification/is untouched Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a person/with a white cloth/his head/having covered/sits/there is nothing/of body/with a white cloth/is untouched/as same as/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/ this very body/with purified mental clarification/having pervade/sits/There is nothing in whole/of the body/with purified mental clarification/is untouched/ this is also in his conduct/This is/Ambaṭṭha/that conduct
185 71. (Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha) so evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte ñāṇadassanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. So evaṃ pajānāti: ayaṃ kho me kāyo rūpī cātummahābhūtiko mātāpettikasambhavo odanakummāsūpacayo aniccucchādanaparimaddanabhedanaviddhaṃsanadhammo. Idaṃ ca pana me viññāṇaṃ ettha sitaṃ ettha paṭibaddhanti. Again/Ambaṭṭha/he/when thus/in a concentrated mind/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to knowing and seeing/the mind/direct/bends forward/He/thus/knows/this/my body/is a form/is a made of four great elements/is originated from mother and father/is continually renewed by so much boiled rice and juicy food/if being impermanent/ rubbing/breaking/shattering/conditions/This my consciousness is/in this place/attached it/ Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato accho vippasanno anāvilo sabbākārasampanno, tatrassa suttaṃ āvutaṃ nīlaṃ vā pītaṃ vā lohitaṃ vā odātaṃ vā paṇḍusuttaṃ vā. Tamenaṃ cakkhumā puriso hatthe karitvā paccavekkheyya: ayaṃ kho maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato accho vippasanno anāvilo sabbākārasampanno. Tatiradaṃ suttaṃ āvutaṃ nīlaṃ vā pītaṃ vā lohitaṃ vā odātaṃ vā paṇḍusuttaṃ vā’ti. Just as/Ambaṭṭha/a gem/a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/It is this/a person with bright eyesight/on hand/having put/observes as ‘this gem is/ a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/ Evameva kho ambaṭṭha bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte ñāṇadassanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. So imambhā kāyā aññaṃ kāyaṃ abhinimmināti rūpiṃ manomayaṃ sabbaṅgapaccaṅgiṃ ahīnindriyaṃ. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso muñjamhā īsikaṃ pabbāheyya. Tassa evamassa: ayaṃ muñjo, ayaṃ īsikā, añño muñjo, aññā īsikā, muñjamhātveva īsikā pabbāḷhā’ti. Seyyathā vā pana ambaṭṭha puriso asiṃ kosiyā pabbāheyya, tassa evamassa: ayaṃ asi, ayaṃ kosi, añño asi, aññā kosi, kosiyā tveva asi pabbāḷho’ti. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha puriso addhānamaggapaṭipanno so suṇeyya bherisaddampi mudiṅgasaddampi saṅkhapaṇavadeṇḍimasaddampi. Tassa evamassa: bherisaddo itipi mudiṅgasaddo itipi saṅkhapaṇavadeṇḍisaddo itipi. Tassa evamassa: ete manussā gehaṃ pavisanti. Ete nikkhamanti. Ete rathiyā vītisañcaranti. Ete majjhe siṃghāṭake nisinnā’ti. Te kāyassa bhedā parammaraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapannā. Ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacīsucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ anupavādakā sammādiṭṭhīkā sammādiṭṭhikammasamādānā. Te kāyassa bhedā parammaraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapannā’ti. He/thus/when the mind is concentrated/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to the knowledge of disappearance and reappearence/the mind/leads/bends forward/he/with devine eye/which is pure/very pure/ superhuman/beings/sees/those are passing away/born again/inferiors/superiors/beautiful/ugly/heaven gone-ones/hell gone-ones/the being followed up in accordance with the action/knows/these/gentlemen/beings/are endowded with bad bodily actions, bad verbal actiona, bad mental actions/of the nobles/ are criticisers, holders of wrong view/are followers of the action of wrong view/they/after the breaking of body/after the death/in hell/in a place of suffering/in the miserable status/were born/these/gentlemen/beings/are endoweded with good bodyliy action/endoweded with good verbal action/are endowded with good mental action/of noble/are not cricizers, holders of right view/followers of the conduct of right view/they/after beraking up the body/after the death/in a heaven/in the wolrd of pleasure/were born/ thus/with devine eye/which is pure/very pure/ superhuman/beings/sees/those are passing away/born again/inferiors/superiors/beautiful/ugly/heaven gone-ones/hell gone- ones/the being followed up in accordance with the action/knows/this is also/in his knowledge
195 78. So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte āsavānaṃ khayañāṇāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṃ hoti. ’Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti. Seyyathāpi ambaṭṭha pabbatasaṅkhepe udakarahado accho vippasanno anāvilo, tattha cakkhumā puriso tīre ṭhito passeyya sippisambukampi sakkharakaṭhalampi macchagumbampi carantampi tiṭṭhantampi. Tassa evamassa: ayaṃ kho udakarahado accho vippasanno anāvilo. Tatirame sippisambukā’pi sakkharakaṭhalā’pi macchagumbā’pi caranti’pi tiṭṭhanti’pīti. Imāya ca ambaṭṭha vijjācaraṇasampadāya caraṇasampadāya ca aññā vijjāsampadā ca caraṇasampadā ca uttaritarā vā paṇītatarā vā natthi. 80. Imāya kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya cattāri apāyamukhāni bhavanti. Katamāni cattāri? Idha ambaṭṭha ekacco samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā imañceva anuttaraṃ vijjācaraṇasampadaṃ anabhisambhuṇamāno khārivivadhamādāya araññāyatanaṃ ajjhogāhati pavattaphalabhojano bhavissāmīti. So aññadatthu vijjācaraṇasampannasseva paricārako sampajjati. Imāya kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya idaṃ paṭhamaṃ apāyamukhaṃ bhavati. This is called/Ambaṭṭha/a bhikkhu/ ‘full of knowledge’ is he/accomplished in conduct/ is he/full of knowledge and complished in conduct is he/than this/Ambaṭṭha/the attaintment of knowledge/and the attainment conduct/attainment of knowledge or attainment of conduct/which is superb/more excellent/there is no/ From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/there are four causes of ruin. What are four? Here/ Ambaṭṭha/some recluse of Brahmin/this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/being not obtained/having taken the pingo basket/the forest/gets in/ ‘I’ll live with windfalls’/He/absolutely/of the one who attained to knowledge and conduct/becomes an attendant/ From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/this is the first cause of ruin.

Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha idhekacco samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā imañceva anuttaraṃ vijjācaraṇasampadaṃ anabhisambhuṇamāno pavattaphalabhojanatañca anabhisambhuṇamāno kuddālapiṭakaṃ ādāya araññāyatanamajjhogāhati kandamūlaphalabhojano bhavissāmīti. So aññadatthu vijjācaraṇasampannasseva paricārako sampajjati. Imāya ca kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya idaṃ dutiyaṃ apāyamukhaṃ bhavati. Again/Ambaṭṭha/here a some recluse or Brahmin/the incomparable knowledge and conduct/being not obtained/ Ambaṭṭha/some recluse of Brahmin/this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/being not obtained and unable to live on windfalls/having taken the hoe and basket/the forest/gets in/ ‘I’ll live with turbes, roots and fruits’/He/absolutely/of the one who attained to knowledge and conduct/becomes an attendant/ From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/this is the second causesof ruin. 82. Puna ca paraṃ ambaṭṭha idhekacco samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā imañceva anuttaraṃ vijjācaraṇasampadaṃ anabhisambhuṇamāno pavattaphalabhojanatañca anabhisambhuṇamāno kandamūlaphalabhojanatañca anabhisambhuṇamāno gāmasāmantaṃ vā nigamasāmantaṃ vā agyāgāraṃ karitvā aggiṃ paricaranto acchati. So aññadatthu vijjācaraṇasampannasseva paricāriko sampajjati. Imāya kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya idaṃ tatiyaṃ apāyamukhaṃ bhavati. Again/Ambaṭṭha/here a some recluse or Brahmin/the incomparable knowledge and conduct/being not obtained/ Ambaṭṭha/some recluse of Brahmin/this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/being not obtained and unable to live on windfalls/unable to live with turbes, roots and fruits/at the corner of village or/at the corner of city/having built a firehouse/the fire/with worshiping fire/sits/ He/absolutely/of the one who attained to knowledge and conduct/becomes an attendant/ From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/this is the third cause of ruin.

So aññadatthu vijjācaraṇasampannasseva paricārako sampajjati. Imāya kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya idaṃ catutthaṃ apāyamukhaṃ bhavati. Imāya kho ambaṭṭha anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya imāni cattāri apāyamukhāni bhavanti. Again/Ambaṭṭha/here a some recluse or Brahmin/the incomparable knowledge and conduct/being not obtained/ Ambaṭṭha/some recluse of Brahmin/this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/being not obtained and unable to live on windfalls/unable to live with turbes, roots and fruits/unable to perform the fire worship/in the junction/with four doors/a house/having built/thinks/whatever/through these four doors/will come/a recluse or/a Brahmin or/to him/as far my strength/as far as my power/will honour/ He/absolutely/of the one who attained to knowledge and conduct/becomes an attendant/ From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/this is the forth cause of ruin. From this/Ambaṭṭha/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/there are four cause of ruin.
199 84. Taṃ kimmaññasi ambaṭṭha? Api nu tvaṃ imāya anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya sandissasi sācariyako?\"Ti. \"No hidaṃ bho gotama. Ko cāhaṃ bho gotama sācariyako? Kā ca anuttarā vijjācaraṇasampadā? Ārakā’haṃ bho gotama anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya sācariyako\"ti. What do you think Ambaṭṭha/do you/with this attainment of knowledge and conduct/being engaged/together with your teacher/? No Venerable Gotama/Who am I/Venerable Gotama/and who is my teacher/What is this incomparable attainment? Far away/Im/Venerable Gotama/from this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/tother with my teacher \"Taṃ kimmaññasi ambaṭṭha? Ye cime anuttarāya vijjācaraṇasampadāya cattāri apāyamukhāni bhavanti, tato ca tvaṃ parihīno sācariyako. Bhāsitā kho pana te esā ambaṭṭha ācariyena brāhmaṇena pokkharasādinā vācā \"ke ca muṇḍakā samaṇakā ibbhā kaṇhā bandhupādapaccā, kā ca tevijjānaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ sākacchā\"ti, attanā āpāyiko’pi aparipūrayamāno. Passa ambaṭṭha yāva aparaddhañca te idaṃ ācariyassa brāhmaṇassa pokkharasādissa. This indeed/Ambaṭṭha/from this/you/incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/are ruined/together with your teacher/are the ones/from this incomparable attainment of knowledge and conduct/four causes of ruin/from that that alos/you are ruined/together with your teacher/Is it said/ to you/Ambaṭṭha/Pokkharasāti Brahamanic teacher’s word/ ‘who are the shaven ascetics/the recluses/ the menials/the black scrapping from the offerings at the foot of our kinsman/what is the/of three-knowlegble Brahmins/discussion? Even though you are ruined/even cannot complete/See Amabṭṭha/what a guilt of your teacher, the Brahmin Pokkharasāti
