Signs of his artistic flair were soon evident when he went with his parents to Quebec, Canada and began to draw and paint the abundant wildlife. At 8 years of age he won a poster competition depicting the Aluminium Company of Canada’s township of Arvida, celebrating its 25th Anniversary. On returning to England, Michael won a scholarship to York Art College, whilst still at school. His interests widened and he began to carve animals and birds and this has occupied his life during the last 25 years. He researches all his commissions before beginning to carve, thus ensuring precise detail. He is now receiving orders from New York in addition to those regular patrons and galleries in England. His work is carved to life size from either Jelutong or Basswood, both have a very fine grain which allow carving in minute detail76 79A CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A KUDU BULL (Tragelaphus A CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A WATERBUCK (Kobus ellipsiprymnus),strepsiceros), with approx. 50in. horns with approx. 22in. horns£300-500 £300-50077 80A CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A RED HARTEBEEST (Alcelaphus A VINTAGE CASED FULL-MOUNT OF AN EAGLE OWL, mounted in a glazebuselaphus caama), with 21in. horns antique case with branch and foliage, measuring approx. 28in. x 18in. x 10in.£200-300 £500-70010

Ward set up a taxidermy shop in London in 1857 and received a royal warrant from Queen Victoria in 1870. Other distantly related Ward family members had taxidermy-related businesses as far away as New York and Australia. Edwin H. Ward had two sons, Edwin Jr. and James Rowland. Both were trained in their father’s business and were successful on their own, mounting heads for the British royal family as well the Empress of Austria, among others. Edwin Jr. left the taxidermy business and eventually moved to the United States where he was involved in various ventures. Edwin Jr.’s son, Herbert Ward (1863–1919), served as a zoologist for Henry Morton Stanley during Stanley’s 1887–1888 Emin Pasha Relief Expedition into the interior of then-unknown Africa. Rowland Ward became the best-known taxidermist of the family. In his own book ‘A Naturalist’s Life Study’ he said he left school at age fourteen to work in his father’s shop. Rowland helped his father mount a hummingbird collection for John Gould. Early on, his focus was on sculpting and anatomically correct modelling. Rowland Ward was also a bronze sculptor of note.82 82A CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A CAPE BUFFALO (Syncerus caffer), withapprox. 10in. boss, approx. 20in. tip to tip£400-60083A CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A WARTHOG (Phacochoerus africanus),with approx. 8in. tusks£200-30084A FINE CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A NYALA (Tragelaphus angasii),with approx. 26in. horns£300-50085A FINE CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF AN ELAND (Taurotragus oryx), withapprox. 30in. horns£800-1,20086A FINE CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A ZEBRA (Equus quagga)£700-80087A FINE CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A WATERBUCK (Kobusellipsiprymnus), with approx. 26in. horns£400-60088 90A FULL RUG-MOUNT OF A ZEBRA (Equus quagga) SKIN, lined with blackbaize£400-60089 90A FULL RUG-MOUNT OF A ZEBRA (Equus quagga) SKIN, lined with black A FINE CAPE AND HEAD MOUNT OF A BISON, with approx. 15 3/4in.baize horns£400-600 £1,000-1,500 13
