Preface In the span of Jewish time, 125 years is brief indeed. But it is a long span in the history of Birmingham, Alabama, and of Temple Emanu-El, our city’s first Jewish congregation. Birmingham was founded in 1871 and began a period of rapid development as an industrial center of the New South. By 1882, a vigorous group of young Jewish families who had come to Birmingham to take advantage of this growth, established Temple Emanu-El. Pioneers with an entrepreneurial spirit, they sought to maintain their ancestral traditions and provide a foundation for the organized growth of Jewish life in this new city. Founded as part of the new American Reform movement, the congregation has always held a leadership role in its city and has been emblematic of Jewish life in the South. Temple Emanu-El has been fortunate to have had exemplary rabbinic and lay leadership. The congregants who have helped guide Temple Emanu-El’s board form a distinguished roster, not only in terms of Temple service, but as some of Birmingham’s most influential civic leaders. For 80 years, from 1895-1975, the congregation had but two senior rabbis: Morris Newfield and Milton L. Grafman, both high-profile leaders in the civic life of Birmingham and in American Reform Judaism. In 1991 Rabbi Jonathan Miller was elected senior rabbi of Temple Emanu- El, and in 1999 he welcomed Rabbi Scott Hausman-Weiss and Cantor Jessica Roskin as colleagues to the Temple’s staff. The past 125 years have been filled with joy, accomplishments, intellectual vigor, community involvement, worship, dedication, and innovation. Temple Emanu- El has never rested on its laurels but continues to forge ahead. From its modest beginning in 1882 -- and its first building, on Fifth Avenue North and Seventeenth Street in 1888 -- to its 1912 move to the south side on Highland Avenue and the building of its education wing in 1956 -- to the magnificent renovation in 2002 -- Temple Emanu-El has always revered its past and its traditions, even as it looks ahead. As congregations mature and grow, so does their Siddur - prayerbook. In fact, no other book better reflects the evolution of the Jewish people than their book of prayer. As we have been blessed in the past, may God continue to bless us in the future. It is our hope that Temple Emanu-El’s Jews yet to come look upon this book and this moment in time with great love and reverence, and honor our endeavors, as we honor those who have come before us. Dedication What should we call this prayer book, this siddur, which celebrates the more than 125 years of Temple Emanu-El? We named our siddur T’rumot HaLev, Offerings of the Heart. Every encounter with the Divine, every prayer uttered aloud, whispered silently, or sung with beauty and enthusiasm is an expression of the heart’s offering. The t’rumot, in the book of Exodus, were the gifts the Israelites would bring to build their mishkan, their sanctuary to God. Ever since, our prayers have created a sanctuary for the Jewish soul and a place for God to dwell among us. So many people brought so many t’rumot, so many gifts to this final work. We are grateful for the leadership of Maxine Horowitz and Lynne Cohen, the presidents of Temple Emanu-El during this time, Temple Emanu-El’s ritual committee and the lay leadership who have encouraged this project and worked to see it happen. Our prayer book has been made ever more beautiful by the work of our exceptional artist, Amy Begun Saab, who has scoured Temple Emanu-El with a loving eye and has captured its beauty in the artwork displayed on these pages. Maggie Begun has worked tirelessly, with the technological support of her husband, James Begun, to lay out this siddur, which turned out, like most things worth doing, to be quite a complicated task. And we offer our most special thanks to Robin Berger, who shepherded this project through to completion with the right proportion of urgency and patience. With great love and dedication, Robin kept us all on task with her skill and boundless energy. Without Robin’s devotion, this siddur never would have been born. T’rumot HaLev was lovingly assembled by the three of us, the rabbis and cantor of Temple Emanu-El.  But none of this could have come to be without the generous t’rumah¸ the generous donation given by Charles and Patsy Collat and the challenge to Temple Emanu-El’s clergy to write a new prayer book that would incorporate the best of the past along with the liturgy of today. Patsy was born here at Temple Emanu-El to a family who had served our congregation for many years, and she continued that tradition of service by leading our Sisterhood along with a variety of continued involvement in our Temple community over the years. Charles, who came to this congregation as a young man, served as its President for an unprecedented three terms and spent seventeen years founding and nurturing the Temple Emanu-El Rabbi Grafman Endowment Fund, which has enhanced the quality of Jewish life. vii

Together they have provided leadership for every worthwhile Temple endeavor. They dedicated the Temple’s Collat Congregational Center, built to house our educational programs, social hall and offices. W  e are sure that their children Nancy Goedecke, Catherine (Caki) Mendel, Susan (Susie) Adams, and Charles Junior (Charlie) and their families are so exceptionally proud of their mother and father, and this offering from their heart, this t’rumah, is undoubtedly among their greatest legacies to them—and to us. Finally, we are grateful to those many generations of Jews who have come before us here at Temple Emanu-El or wherever they might have worshipped, who have offered the Holy One their hearts and their souls and have built the spiritual sanctuaries which have sustained our ancestors in their days, and which sustain us in ours, today. Blessed are You Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, Ruler of the universe, whose word brings on the evening; whose wisdom opens heaven’s gates, and whose understanding changes the times and seasons and orders the stars in their heavenly constellations according to the divine will. God creates day and night, rolling away light in the face of darkness and darkness in the face of light, causing the day to pass and bringing on the night, separating day and night. God’s name is the Host of heaven. Living and eternal God, rule over us for all time. Blessed are You Lord/‫יהוה‬, who brings on the evening. Master of the universe, grant me the ability to be alone. May it be my custom to go outdoors each day among the trees and grasses, among all growing things, there to be alone and enter into prayer. When you love Adonai Elohecha body and soul, these things I ask of you will be possible:   To answer your children’s questions about Me and believe your answers yourselves To connect religion to your everyday comings and goings… for example, when you hug them in bed at night with tender words – Sh’ma Yisrael or when you think to say Modeh Ani in the rush of getting them up and out in the morning To be alert enough to open doors for your children in every waking moment and when they dream.   And finally, to remember just why all these things matter:   They matter because, I, Adonai Elohecha, brought you and your children out of Egypt to be God for you. Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, cause us to lie down in peace, and raise us up, our Sovereign, to life. Cover us with the sukkah of Your peace, improve us with Your good counsel, and save us for the sake of Your name. Shield us. Remove from us enmity, pestilence, war, hunger and anguish. Let there be no evil before us or behind us. Protect us within the shadow of Your wings, for You are our Guardian and our Helper. Our divine Ruler, merciful and gracious, guard our going out and our coming in to life and to peace, now and forevermore. Cover us with the sukkah of Your peace. It is a sign between Me and the people of Israel that in six days God made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day God rested and was renewed. 23

We know not, O Lord, whether the gifts for which we ask are for our good, whether our trials and tribulations may not be blessings in disguise. So we do not pray to make our lives easy, to give us happiness without alloy. Rather do we pray that You aid us to be uncomplaining and unafraid. Teach us to face life with faith and courage that we may see the blessings hidden away even in life’s discords and struggles. Help us to wrest victory from the discipline of pain. Inspired by these words, Maimonides taught that there are different levels of prayer, from the physical to the metaphysical. Giving tzedakah, our time or our effort to a cause worthy of God’s notice, is the first, most material form of prayer. Drawing from our hearts, the words and melodies of prayer is yet another. But silence, only in silence, Maimonides taught, can we offer God the purest of our prayerful moments – a purity because it is free of the material world. My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from deceitful speech. Quiet my soul against those who curse me, and let my soul be humble. Our Tradition teaches: “Gossip kills three people: he who speaks it, he who listens, and he about whom it is said.” Rabbi Hama, the son of Hanina, added to this stern warning that equates gossip with murder. He asks, “What is the meaning of the Biblical verse, ‘Death and life are in the hand of the tongue’? Has the tongue a hand?” Rather, it tells us that just as the hand can kill, so too can the tongue. One might suggest that unlike the hand, which can kill only one near it, the tongue can kill he who is far away. Therefore the text states, ‘The tongue is a sharpened arrow.’ Babylonian Talmud 37

God spread out the heavens and established the earth. The Eternal’s place of glory is in the heavens above, and the dwelling of God’s strength is in the lofty heights. The Lord/ ‫ יהוה‬is our God, there is none else. This truth is our power, none can compare. As it is written in God’s Torah: “Know therefore this day and keep in mind that the Lord/‫יהוה‬ alone is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other.” Deuteronomy 4:39 41
