2017 Harney County Fair Rodeo Horse Races Grand Marshal It’s An Honor To Have Robert Cargill As Our 2017 Grand Marshal Summited by Jaime Cargill Edmundson Robert “Bob” Cargill Sr. was born on a ranch in Hitchcock, Oklahoma and spent his youth ranching, farming and enjoying his passion for rodeo. He participated in team and calf rop- ing, winning many trophy buckles and saddles along with raising his show animals from an early age. Bob and his family moved to Fairplay, Colorado in 1948 where his family ranched at the edge of the Rockies. He attended Colorado State University studying Animal Science and graduated in 1961. While in College, Bob married his sweetheart since 8th grade, Sandy Nelson, and together they ranched and raised their four kids: Julie, Bob Jr, Mike, and Jeannie. In 1972, the young family moved to Oregon where they purchased land near Lawen and began ranching in that area until the flood relocated them near Burns. Bob remembers when he started helping at the Harney County Fair. “It was our first year in Harney County; Julie and Bobby both had steers to show at the fair and Mike and Jeannie would be able to show soon. Community members asked me to get involved in helping with 4-H, so between kids and animals, it seemed like a good way to help out.” Bob took on the role of 4-H liaison as he watched his four kids participate in the program. In 1977, Bob began serving as a Fair Board Director, helping with operations and the Fairgrounds budget. He served in several positions on the board, including on the Rodeo and Race Meet Committee. In 2011, Bob resigned from the Fair Board, while joking, “To enjoy getting to see the parade for the first time in 34 years.” Bob was passionate about serving on the Fair Board, being able to see the improvements made over time that benefited the community. Bob remembers the hard work the directors dedicated to getting county approval for a road construction project that widened the entrance to the Fairgrounds. Over 34 years, Bob had the chance to help with several Fair and Fairgrounds improvements including the bathroom remodels, a new 4-H show arena and Memorial building and improving race day func- tions during the rodeo. For Bob, his favorite part of serving as a Director was the people around him. “I feel being able to put an event together with so many other volunteers, that the community could enjoy, was the best part. It was really about the great people I worked with.” Bob enjoyed getting to watch his kids and grandkids be involved in the Fair with their animals and rodeo and later having his son Bob Jr and grandchildren help him during Fair. He will joke that he enjoyed preparing the racetrack before the races, “it was a nice and quiet place to help out, except for when the queens needed on the track.” With a smile on his face, he’ll also admit that one of his most cherished memories was “getting to watch both my Granddaughters serve as Harney County Queen, and watch my grandkids show their animals during Fair.” Apart from serving as a Fair Board Director, Bob was busy at home ranching, spending time with family, serving his church, working with his son in their custom hay- ing business and serving as an OTEC Director Burns Area. Today, you’ll find Bob still doing all those things with a smile on his face and a heart to help others.Whether he’s chasing a cow, grandkid or windrow, Bob doesn’t slow down to recollect for too long. Bob encourages every community member to serve in some capacity, and take pride in their service. “When you serve the Fairgrounds or anywhere else in the com- munity, you are enriching the lives of your neighbors and preserving a piece of the past for the next generation.” BOB’S COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Oregon Cattlemen Association • The National Cattlemen Association • Harney County Stock Growers • Crane High School Board Harney School District Budget Board • Harney County Budget Board • Harney County Fair Board • Church Board • 4-H leader Kiwanis Club of Burns-Hines • OTEC Director Burns Area • Official cheerleader at Grandkid’s games 2017 HARNEY COUNTY FAIR, RODEO & HORSE RACES PAGE 11

2017 Harney County Fair Rodeo Horse Races Howdy Folks! Meet Our 2017 Harney County Fair & Rodeo Queen Caylyn Gilmer Hello fair and rodeo fans! Welcome to the 93rd Annual Harney County Fair, Rodeo, and Race- meet. My name s Caylyn Gilmer and I have had the great honor to represent Harney County as your 2017 Fair and Rodeo Queen. I’m a 5th generation Harney Co. ranch girl, currently at- tending Burn High School as a senior. I live with my parents, Darrell and Trina Gilmer and my younger brother, Brady on a small ranch outside of Burns where we have horses, dogs, pigs, sheep, cows, and occasionally a fox family. I have a love for all animals. In the past 8 years I have participated in judging and shown my dogs, a market steer, market sheep, and my horses at county and state fairs through 4- H and FFA.The country girl that I am loves to go camping, hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling, lis- tening to country music and acting in drama club. Most of all I like to ride my pretty little palomino, Lady, for pleasure, gathering cattle and gaming. In the future I plan to study an- imal science and medicine at OSU. Lady and I have had a wonderful summer traveling to Sisters Rodeo, Crooked River Round-Up,Vale Rodeo, Deschutes Co. Fair, Lake Co. Fair, Chief Joseph Days, and several others. We are looking forward to our own Harney Co. Fair, Rodeo, & Racemeet and the Pendleton Round-Up. All of this is made possible by the support of my sponsors, fam- ily, friends, and the wonderful people of Harney County. Thank you so much to: Frenchglen Hotel, Harney Co. 2017 Harney County Fair Rodeo Horse Races Meet The Folks The Manager’s Report: We had a very successful year. The 92nd fair was an economic success, the grandstands were repainted and repaired, a huge crowd witnessed the dem- olition derby, had over 200 horses for the High School Rodeo, and events every month in the Memorial Building. We had some learning experiences, and from them we will grow. The 93rd Harney County Fair, Rodeo and Racemeet is shaping up to be, as the youth say, EPIC. The Demolition Derby on August 19, 2017 will again in- clude the ATV Rodeo. Jay and Kara Nelson stepped up to do the planning for the ATV Rodeo, and with Ed Moulton’s cooperation, should be a great event on August 19. Expect the ATV event to begin in the morning, then the Demolition Derby events, for nonstop action until late evening. At the volunteer appreciation dinner, the attendees voted the theme of the 2017 Fair: Country Scenes and Children’s Dreams: should make for inter- esting decorations by the 4-H/FFA stalls, and for the decorations on the vendor booths. At that same dinner, the Grand Marshal was announced: Bob Cargill. Bob is a long time fair supporter and represents Harney County on the OTEC Board. His accomplishments on the Fair Board are way too long to commu- nicate, read his information on the Grand Marshal page. Now for the 93rd fair: Will have the 4-H/FFA kids and their animals in the west barns, the 4-H static exhibits in the 4-H building, the exhibit building will again be festive with flowers, vegetables, fruits, preserves, home baked pies, and all things fattening. 4-H will accept their static exhibits on Tuesday, and judge on Wednesday, having the exhibits open to the public beginning on Thursday. The Memorial Building with have the photographs, art, hobbies, fabric arts, sewing, and this year an interactive display for children 3 to 10. Will make the interior of the building a bit different and maybe a little nois- ier. Outside, the carnival from Davis Carnivals will return, with a return to the $20 presale tickets and $25 prices at fair time: also will have more rides for the younger set, and a bit more friendly persons in the ride area. Have confirmed a Walk on Water feature: It is a pay activity, but one I think the com- munity will embrace. Also working on getting a rock climbing wall for the young men to try their muscles, young ladies are not excluded. Then maybe the most exciting event will be a Saturday night concert headlining Sammy Kershaw. This event is co-sponsored by the County Court and the Fair Board. The concert is scheduled to start at 9 with a warm up act, then Sammy taking the stage about 10 pm. Really excited to have a concert with a major player in the music scene, at the fair. I am hoping this will be the start of a tradition for the fair. Tickets are available at A-Parts and the fair office. The tickets are very reasonable with front row standing and a reserved section. The box seats are reserved to the people who annually purchased them. I am so looking forward to this fair, with new events, new things for the younger set, new commercial vendors and some new foods. May the 93rd Fair, Rodeo, and Racemeet be the beginning to new and exciting activities during the Harney County Fair.
