William Kobylinski The Amazing Popadon Mixed Media on Paper St Mark’s Catholic Primary School Drummoyne This is a drawing of my 95 year old grandfather, Popadon who is very special to me.  He inspires me because he is kind and gentle and always has time for me.  He never raises his voice and I have never heard him say a bad word against anyone.  He has been really sick lately so I hope this drawing helps him feel better. I used a combination of alcohol markers, acrylic paint and colour pencils on white paper. 101

9-12 years old Emily Roy My Nan Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine This is a portrait of my Nan. I chose to draw her because she has done a lot for me. She has been through a lot in her life, including the bushfires that burnt down her house in Batemans Bay. Despite this, she remains very positive as we all help to rebuild her home. I painted the Union Jack in the background to represent her birthplace. I drew my Nan with lead pencils and pastels for the flag. Mena Soliman Abba Kirellos Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine This is a portrait of my grandfather, Fr Kirellos. He was a priest in the Coptic Church, and passed away almost one year ago. I wanted to paint his portrait as a way to remember him. He had such a great laugh and always enjoyed the time we spent with him in Egypt each Easter. I have painted his portrait using the Coptic iconographic style which is often seen in my church depicting the saints. Although icons are traditionally painted using egg tempera, I used watercolour paints and a marker to outline my icon. 104

Maeve Bishop Lucky to Call You Mum Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine Lucky to call you mum’ is a portrait of my mother, Alana, who I love dearly. The reason I wanted to draw my mum is because she is an amazing artist who inspires me. One day I hope to be as good as her. I created this artwork using watercolour pencils. 105

9-12 years old Kitty Wakim Muireann’ Watercolour on paper St John Bosco College Engadine This artwork represents my best friend Muireann. Every colour that I have used represents a different emotion, a different story that we have shared together. The colours I have chosen were bright and cheerful. I was inspired to create this piece when I was scrolling through old photos and I knew I wanted to capture her through a bright burst of colour. She has always wanted me to paint her, but charcoal or acrylic paint never seemed to bring out her; she has always been a bright and bubbly person so I thought watercolour would be perfect. 106

Scarlett Hughes A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine Everyone has their down days and I wanted to create an artwork that shows how I sometimes feel. It’s important that I express my emotions because If I keep them bottled up inside, I stop loving myself. This artwork is about me letting go of all the negativity as a way of finding love for myself and seeing how getting caught up in words is not what I need to focus on, but rather the positive love I have to share. Sophie Burgher Face of Change Lead Pencil on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine My portrait is a semi-detailed sketch of half of my face, and half of a crows. I wanted to help symbolise transformation, change and the future with the crow, in which the half of my face represents the symbols ongoing in me. Through my first year of high school I witnessed transformation and change around me: my peers, teachers, classes, everyday life and even myself. My portrait represents the past, the present and the future. 107

9-12 years old HONOURABLE MENTIONS Ceana Tan My Gamer Bro Mixed Media on Paper Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove My younger brother means a lot to me an is part of my life that I can’t leave behind. Each sentence of word or phrase is some of his code names which are so silly. He means such a lot, is so caring and always turns to me. Some of our imaginations may look weird to us but it’s something that we both know is something else. The ipads are the thing that together gives us so much joy and lots of drama. It’s the reason why he means such a big part of my life and i wouldn’t like to lose him. Sofia Galic The Greatest Grandmother Mixed Media on Paper Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove My drawing is about my grandmother who does alot for me. She takes me places and helps me alot. The materials I used were watercolours,She’s important in my life because she looks after me, does activities with me and always makes me laugh.I used bright colours for my art for her nice and funny personality. She definitely plays an amazing role in my life. She is the best grandmother and always will be. 108

Alexandra Liontos Bubbles of Colour Coloured Pencil on Paper Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove A series of colours is what came to mind, palm trees and my favourite scenes. I wasn’t keen on who to draw until sparks of underscribabble memories came to mind, my Mum. She is such a significant person to me and is a great role model for me in my steps of life. I don’t always notice the beauty in life but bubbles are a great way of incorporating my love for nature. The palm trees are scattered in both the bubbles and the background, my love for the beach, so you see this my life, my painting, my style! 109

9-12 years old 9-12 YEARS CATEGORY WINNER Leanne Trinh Aunty Sandy Acrylic Paint on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove The figure in my acrylic painting is my wonderful aunty. I captured one of her rare, vibrant smiles on her most recent birthday and this artwork is based on that. I used various shades of warm colours to express her comforting presence and bright influence on my life. The deep red tones on her shirt signifies her and my Chinese and Vietnamese heritage and how she has contributed to my cultural identity and upbringing. I chose to do an enlarged realistic painting to really illustrate my aunty’s pure and raw self that I have only seen a few times behind the hard-working person she always displays. 110

Sofia Sicari Mia Mamma (My Mum) Mixed Media on Paper Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove My artwork is a tribute to my Mum. I painted a portrait of her. My mum does lots of things to help everyone so I wanted to make her something special. She’s an inspiration to my whole family and she encourages us to work hard everyday. Her favourite colour is purple and white so I made a purple and white background. My Mum loves art so this would be the perfect gift for her. In my painting, I used watercolour for the base, then added pencil to create shading. I called my artwork, ‘Mia Mamma’ because it highlights our connection to our Italian heritage. Jacinta Shori Hopeful Star Mixed Media on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove My painting was made using fineliners, gel pens, watercolours and acrylic paints - using mainly cool colours in my artwork. The portrait is of my younger sister Abigail who has a curiosity for the night sky and an endless wonder of what is out there in the galaxies. Abigail has a face of appreciation and awe when looking up to the night sky. The mountains in the background are a symbol of her challenges in life and her need for persistence. My style is mildly realistic with supernatural and cartoony feels as some aspects of my painting do not look like they do in real life. Abigail has a face of appreciation and awe when looking up to the night sky 111

9-12 years old Amelie Hasting Pokemon World Watercolour Paint on Paper St Fiacre’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt I completed a self portrait with pokemon in the background. I enjoy pokemon and love watching the series. I painted a side profile of myself to show that we are coming together to become friends and create something new. I used watercolour paints and black maker to outline my work. At first I thought I wouldn’t be successful using watercolours but I actually ended up using them well. I really like my painting and I hope you do too! Georgia Bishop My Beautiful Sister Lead Pencil on Paper St Fiacre’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt This is a portrait of my big sister. I decided to paint her because she looks after me and she loves doing her trapeze. She is the best sister ever! I painted her using pencil and watercolour paints. I coloured sections of her face because she has often completed artworks like this and it reminded me of her. I really liked how I drew her in the background on her trapeze. 112

Aaron Jobin Myself Watercolour Paint on Paper St Fiacre’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt My artwork is a self portrait because I am very unique. I used watercolours paints and pencil to complete my work. I used a variety of colours and shades to make it as realistic as I could. I first drew the outline then started colouring. I used the colour green in the background because it is my favourite colour. I think you need to show yourself respect and be proud of yourself and that’s why I painted myself for my portrait. I hope you like my artwork! 113

9-12 years old Hudson Jessup Gangsta Granny Spray paint on paper St Columba’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt North This is a portrait of my Nana on her 75th birthday. My Nana is cool! She makes clothes and cooks me food better than a 5 start restaurant! I love Nana and I also love graffiti So why not put the two together... 114

Hugh Thompson My Thoughts Lead Pencil on Paper St Fiacre’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt This is my self portrait. I completed it using pencil and watercolour paints. It represents me thinking about what I am going to draw. The background shows my thoughts and how they flow throughout my mind. Also it reminds me of water flowing through the deep blue ocean because of the green, aqua and blue colours in the background. Matilda Mulcahy My Beloved Sister Phoebe Watercolour Paint on Paper St Fiacre’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt I drew a portrait of my beloved sister, Phoebe. She is significant in my life because she is my only sibling so I care and play with her all day. I created this portrait using watercolour paints. I made her very abstract and colourful because she is very crafty and magical in my life. She also loves fashion so I made her have lipstick and some eyeshadow under her eyes. I made a mistake but then I remembered that mistakes are great! Phoebe has made lots of mistakes in her work and I wanted to show that Phoebe doesn’t care and moves on. 115

9-12 years old Cassidy Pretorius Blooming Beauty Watercolour Paint on Paper St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School Maroubra Junction My artwork titled “Blooming Beauty ’ is a portrait of my friend. The reason why I drew her is because she is a role model for me but she fails to see her own beauty which makes me feel upset every time she insults herself. My artwork represents a quote that Confucius said, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” I drew a flower for her dress to represent her beauty on the outside and inside. I used watercolours for the face and flower dress. I felt that the watercolours would help with blending out tones on her face and her dress. I also used fineliners and sharpies to give the artwork more texture. 118

The bright colours represent the colourful man my Pa is. The Australian flag represents an Australia Day award he won for Community Service . I have included symbols of the things he loves; golf, tennis and cricket. The building in the background is the University of New South Wales, because my Pa teaches accounting. Messi recognises that there are far more essential things in life than his achievements on the field. To him, it is not simply about learning how to play football. He is an excellent example to us young people when it comes to fulfilling our dreams in life. His humility grounds him in his biggest aspiration of constantly being a better person for himself, his community, and his fans. I used a tissue to shade HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils to draw Messi. It took me hours to draw Messi. 138

Also, he is so handsome and stylish, but the most loving thing about him is that he apologised to a disabled man who Mbappe accidentally hit and gave him his jersey! I used a pencil, blending and sharpening tools and a knife sharpener for my artwork. When I was doing my artwork, it was so good, but it was on a practice paper. The actual writing was terrible, and I hated it, and my grandpa saw it. My grandpa was the best artist in Vietnam in the 90s, but when the war started, he stopped, so I told him to guide me, and he became my inspiration. My 88-year-old grandpa also taught me how to use the shaping tools, and I did it successfully! Jessica Nguyen Summer Overload Mixed Media on Paper Sacred Heart Catholic Primary SchoolSummer Villawood My artwork is based on anime. The sand is everywhere, like a mountain. Since he drew with lines, I added lines in the background in different shapes and lengths. Some are curly, and some are wavy. I started this drawing by dividing the paper into quarters, and then after, I drew half of the portraits and then drew the other half, starting with the head first. I used graphic pencils, 2B and a well as a blending stump to blend some parts to complete the artwork. The image I drew was based on a photograph from when we were in Canada for a photoshoot with my Mum’s family. 13-15 years old Adrian Pezzullo My Grandfather Lead Pencil on Paper Marist College Kogarah Bexley Here is the artwork of my nono who is one of the most important people to me at the moment because I love going fishing with him, playing chess with him and helping him make his amazing pasta sauce. I love hearing about all of his stories over the years and watching vintage movies with him. I went for a Black and white pencil style and tried to shade it in to look more realistic. William Sozomenou Sunset and Dresses Lead Pencil on Paper Marist College Kogarah Bexley In my artwork called Sunset and Dresses you can see my sister standing, smiling, and showing her jolly and fun and happy and creative personality. Behind her is a picture of a sunset on the horizon highlighting her love for the ocean and beach. On the other side you see a mannequin with a dress hung in it, showing her creativity side when it comes to textiles.  My sister’s ability to cheer people up is beyond amazing, incredible even! The image is drawn in black and white to show how life doesn’t need to have big bright colours for you to have fun. 150
