Patrick Thomas Self-Portrait Watercolour Pencil on Mixed Media Paper Marist College Eastwood This art work portrays me holding a novel, books and reading are my favourite things and this self-portrait provides insight into my character, ‘me’ - an avid reader. The piece was inspired by Henri Matisse and the Fauvists. The portrait then was laid out in a grid pattern, similar to the artmaking practice of Chuck Close. Each square was 3 by 3 centimetres, so the page, in total, was composed of a 10 x 14 grid, so 140 squares in total. I really enjoyed creating this piece. 67
9-12 years old William Orchard A Fauvist Fantasy Colour Pencil on Mixed Media Paper Marist College Eastwood Artist Statement: ‘A Fauvist Fantasy’ is a self-portrait of myself laying down with my hands behind my head. The artwork was inspired by the Fauvist art style of 20th Century Paris, particularly the works of Henri Matisse. This inspiration is seen in the organic shapes, bold colours and Matisse inspired patterns used in my artwork such as the Lily Pads from his 1912 artwork, ‘The Goldfish’. When making this artwork, I was motivated to capture my own personal nature while also challenging the typical photorealistic portrait style. Overall, it was a great experience and a lot of fun. 68

The style of Fauvism is showcased in the bright and vibrant colours I chose, as well as use of Matisse patterns. I wanted this artwork to represent me, but in a different way, unimaginable through the perspective of the average eye. With the use of a range of different colours I was able to shine myself through in a different light, expressed by pencil on paper. The artwork that you look upon is the artist I aspire to be, something that I hope you are able to see. 69

My chosen pose of holding a pencil in my hand represents that I am left handed. It also shows my love for writing as well as drawing. 70
Zach Tanner Colours in Harmony Colour Pencil on Mixed Media Paper Marist College Eastwood ‘Colours in Harmony’ is a self portrait inspired by the fauvist works of Henri Matisse. Throughout the process of making this artwork, I became deeply influenced by the bold colours, shapes and patterns used by him in artworks such as ‘Polynesia, The Sea’. By adapting symbols from Henri Mattise, I was able to make my patterns represent the forces of nature, Water, Wind and Earth. 71

9-12 years old Lola Farrugia Self portrait ‘Me’ Charcoal & Pastel on Paper FR John Therry Catholic Primary School Balmain I drew a self portrait of myself because it reminds me of the self portrait of Van Gogh that I saw at the Van Gogh Exhibition. Initially I wanted to use paint, but then I put too many details in it and the picture started to be a sketch of myself. I used black charcoal for the foreground and background and for a small part of the self portrait, I used white pastel for my skin. I also searched for some artworks that were similar to the drawing that I made. In one of the sketches I discovered, it showed that the moon was bright in the night sky. So then I blurred the white and black pastel to make a brighter shade to show that the moon was reflecting its glow on me. 86

9-12 years old Aidan Turner Laurel Turner Lead Pencil on Paper St Mark’s Catholic Primary School Drummoyne This is my beautiful grandmother. She was born in 1919 and lived till the age of 102. This lady has been a war hero, she lived through WW2, The Great Depression and so much more. I chose to draw her because she was an inspirational and funny person. She taught me so much and was always so kind to me. The necklace she wears is now mine and I love wearing it because I feel closer to her. Saskia Majgaard My Sensei Lead Pencil on Paper St Mark’s Catholic Primary School Drummoyne Seek perfection of character, be faithful, endeavour, respect others. These are some of the principles I learnt from my Sensei Andy. I have chosen to draw him in lead pencil, using no colour and no busy background to reinforce his characteristics of focus and discipline. To me, Andy has two different faces, his face of power/focus, and his face of warmth/fun. I have chosen his welcoming, smiling face as that is what makes me smile. He never forgets to remind me of how focus, strength and courage are the key points in karate. That is why I have chosen my inspiring Sensei. 98
Madison Perry Castaner Mrs. Torres Chalk Pastel on Paper St Mark’s Catholic Primary School Drummoyne I have chosen to sketch my classroom teacher because, even though I have only had her for a few weeks, she has already proven to me that she is inspirational and AMAZING. I look forward to a great year with her in Year 4. William Crothers The Amazing Grandad Coloured Pencil on Paper St Mark’s Catholic Primary School Drummoyne My artwork is titled The Amazing Grandad. I chose to draw this picture because it was the very last photo that was taken of my grandad when he came to visit us in Sydney. This picture is special because it helps me to remember my grandad who is now in heaven. I want to give this picture to my Nana because she really misses my grandad. To create this artwork I sketched it first with lead pencil then completed it using coloured pencils. 99
