Matheus Garcia Pansolin Akaishi Without My Mum I Am Nothing Mixed Media on Paper Marist College Kogarah Bexley My artwork is titled Without my mum, I am nothing. It is a portrait based on my loving mum who means a lot to me. I had the idea to draw her because I feel like the luckiest person to have a mum like her. To the world she may just be a normal person but to me she is everything. The dominant mood in these portraits is warm and happy with lots of great energy. The Materials used in this portrait include watercolour brush markers, led pencils (HB and 2B) and black outliners.  151

13-15 years old Patrick Toms My Best Friend Coloured pencils Marist College Eastwood I have drawn my sister for my ‘Hero’ portrait using colour pencil as my medium, and have used composition and colour to support my depiction of her in my portrait. I have chosen to use colour as my medium as I can show contrast between the face and the paws, and I have enjoyed using it in the past. I have used a composition of the dog in my portrait. In the portrait a dog’s paws rest on my sister’s shoulders, and I have included this to show my sister’s love of dogs and how they are important in her life. 152

Patrick Polfreman Vicken Vartikian My Best Mate Moses in Charcoal Black and white charcoal with watercolour pencils Charcoal, Black Watercolour and Posca Pen Marist College Eastwood Marist College Eastwood Moses is my ‘hero’ because he looks after me and lets me My ‘hero’ who I have chosen to portray in my artwork is my know if I am on the right track. I really look up to him, he Dad. I chose him because he always takes care of my family, is funny, kind and an awesome brother. I really enjoyed the doing the little things to help us out like cooking meals and process of charcoal and was surprised at how natural I was helping us with chores when we have lots of work and study with the medium. I am so happy with how this portrait turned to do. He remains positive even through times of struggle out. It gives my brother Moses the respect he deserves. and in my portrait I tried to capture his joy with his mouth open and eyes slightly squinted as if he is giving a small smile or chuckle. In the background I used yellow water colour to again portray his joy. Charcoal allows me to better show the facial contours and with the use of both black and white charcoal I was able to capture the defining parts of my Dad’s face that give him the presence that I appreciate about him. 153

13-15 years old William Byrne My Hero Charcoal (figure), Watercolour (backround) Marist College Eastwood In my life my father has been my hero for as long as i can remember. He has always been there for me, to care for me, make me laugh and comfort me in the darkest of times I have been in. therefor in this portrait I have chosen him to be my subject mat ter to draw throughout this term. I used realism in my portrait to capture his personality and joy while showing his power and leadership he demonstrates throughout his every day life. Overall my father is very important in my life and I can’t imagine anyone elese and hopefully this portrait will give him justice. Anastacia Botonis Portrait of brother Lead Pencil on Paper Casimir Catholic College Marrickville I have chosen to draw my brother, Phillip, for the Portrait Prize Competition. My brother has always supported and encouraged me. He is the best brother anyone could wish for. He fulfils his duty as my older brother by upholding high standards and setting a good example of what is right and what is wrong . Phillip, my brother , has guided me to be the person I am today and has assisted me in doing my best work. He is my source of inspiration and motivation. He is kind , sympathetic and has a sweet character - I know he will always be there to guide and support me. I used a photo as a reference to his proud moment in his new job. 154

Vinny Acosta My Da Mixed Media Marist College Eastwood My Da (grandfather) has always been funny and a great inspiration to me. He lived in Terrigal, and I have loads of memories of summer holidays. During the first covid lockdown in 2020, we couldn’t see him, and his health declined. Da had a stroke and was in hospital for a few months. Towards the end of 2020, he moved in with us and needs 24/7 care. Sometimes Da thinks it’s 1970, other times he thinks he has to play piano at the opera house. However, sometimes he is quite lucid and also a bit cheeky. I wanted loads of contrast in my portrait to represent him. 155

13-15 years old Alyshia Langtip Beauty is ageless Lead Pencil on Paper Marist Catholic College Penshurst I made this artwork depicting my grandma (Jane) who continues to inspire me daily. Where in tough times, when she can pull through; so can I. This portrait is made from charcoal and graphite on a wide sheet. I tried to make this art realistic in the sense of beauty is ageless; clearly shown in my grandma. I chose her to be my subject as I love her and she is amazing, and in general I wanted to give her something for her to know that she is truly appreciated by those around her. 156

Evie Lange The Persistence Of Memory Self Portrait Acrylic Paint on Paper Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich For my piece I have chosen to do a self portrait and depict myself. The artwork is an ammalgmation of The Persistence Of Memory By Salvador Dahli. I have chosen this famous artwork because I think it is a beautiful artwork and I thought it would be a challenge for me to paint. Siane Goncalves Simone Biles’ Lead Pencil on Paper Menai - Aquinas Catholic College This is an artwork of Simone Biles. I have chosen to draw her because she is such an inspirational person. As a gymnast myself, I can relate to her everyday struggles of mental blocks and how difficult gymnastics can be, mentally and physically. I have chosen to use pencil in this artwork because I believe that sometimes the simplest things can create an outstanding effect. This piece of art illustrates how Simone Biles may appear to us, but how she actually experiences hardships, especially in light of all the negative comments on social media that I have depicted in this piece. The comments in this piece of art were found online via social media platforms, which truly highlights how terrible some people can be. Overall, my favourite part about this artwork is how it is multiple portraits of Simone Biles, expressing her emotions.  157

13-15 years old Krishna Velmurugan Golden Culture Lead Pencil on Paper Auburn Trinity Catholic College “In India, gold plays a significant role in paying homage to our culture and family. My mother wears lustrous gold, which she values because it comes from her roots in India, which she left behind when she moved to Australia in her 20s. The jasmine flowers blooming out represent the unconditional love she portrays towards everyone and how modest she is. Although my mother has endured adversity, she has consistently dedicated her life to ensure that both of her children have exposure to all of life’s opportunities, which especially and undoubtedly makes her the person who has had a substantial influence on my life.” Mirabelle Huynh Birthday Girl Acrylic Paint on Paper Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights This portrait is of my best friend Belen. I took this photo on the day of her Quinceanera, a very special celebration of her 15th birthday in Peruvian culture. I wanted to capture her happiness, beyond the countless rehearsed photos taken by the professional photographers. Belen has been my best friend for almost 10 years, and we have always been by each other’s side. Seeing her looking like a princess at this memorable celebration which we had prepared and anticipated for months made me appreciate all the years I have been her best friend, and how far we have come. 158

Sarah Reynolds Vibrant Neighbourhood Acrylic Paint on Paper Marist Sisters’ CollegeWoolwich My portrait “Vibrant Neighbourhood” is a self portrait I painted recently for an art assignment. We were doing a topic called ‘As I see myself’, which is why I painted a portrait of myself based on how I believe myself to be. The painting reflects my shy and apprehensive personality amongst a vivid and bold environment. 159

13-15 years old Emma Webster Wonder Mixed Media on Paper Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College Burraneer Cronulla This is my brother, Will. Will never fails to make me smile. This drawing shows my absolute favourite expression to see on his face. The look of wonder when he sees something new or does something he didn’t believe he could. I’ve seen this face when he completed a Rubix cube for the first time, when he codes a game, when he beats Minecraft. It’s an electric expression of curiosity and wonder and it brings me so much joy and inspires me to find things that I am interested in, and challenges me to try things I’ve never done. 160

Summer Heffernan Heal Mixed Media on Paper Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College Burraneer Cronulla “Heal” depicts my cousin, Sienna, and her stoicism as she struggles through the wretched pathway that life has chosen for her. My hope for her is that she can heal from the wounds that have destroyed her innocence. I want people to hear her pain and feel her struggle. I want those who are suffering from abuse not to be silenced as she was. The world must hear her voice and allow her to heal. Veronica Lattouf My Brother Coloured Pencil on Paper Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College Burraneer Cronulla This representation of my young brother captures the essence of infancy and the angelic appearance as his eyes gaze in a childlike tranquillity. The soft tones selected and subtle pencil finishes pose a peaceful and happy effect which reflects precious memories close to my heart. 161

13-15 years old Sommer Deacon Sophie’ Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine Sophie’s bright blue eyes are where I find comfort, I find laughter, I find memories and I find love. Sophie is my best friend and within her gorgeous smile she holds the ability to make everyone around her just as happy as she always is. The blue of her eyes and the background contrasts against the shading of her face. Her eyes are a gorgeous colour illuminating everything encompassing her just as she does everyday. In this drawing, I aimed to capture the happiness Sophie brings unintentionally to her family and friends as she lives her life heavily infused with music, school, movies, shopping and the beach. Elio Buckley Road to the Rally Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine 80km/h. Wind burning sun-scorched cheeks. Gravel scattering and dust forming into clouds. 100km/h. Life zooming past, faint blurs of loved ones cheering from the sidelines.  I have decided to illustrate my cheeky, kind, motorsport-loving Grandpa. In ‘Road to the Rally’ I used red, yellow and orange crayons to depict the harsh sun that beats down on ralliers and the dusty dirt road they drive. I used graphite lead pencils to portray my Grandpa and the motorbike tyres, which represent the sport of motocross. I tried to capture the mischievous spirit of my Grandpa through subtle indents and lines of pencil. 162

Lily Naylor Little Sunshine Coloured Pencil on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine Energetic is one word to describe my little sister, Charlotte. She is creative and the funniest kid I have ever met. I’m glad to call her my sister. Anytime she gets the chance she will light up the room with funny dances or even singing “Cover Me In Sunshine”. I’ve chosen to draw her because she is one of the most important people to me and she’s never afraid to be herself; and has in fact encouraged me to be myself. In this artwork I’ve tried to capture her bright spirit using a range of different colours to create a portrait of her. 163

13-15 years old 164

Has two entries Sophie Burgher Ethan Ngo Crow Face Lang Binh Ngo Lead Pencil on Paper Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield My portrait is a semi-detailed sketch of half of my face, and half of a crows. I wanted to help symbolise transformation, I chose my grandfather because he experienced the change and the future with the crow, in which the half of my Vietnam War at a very young age and inspires me face represents the symbols ongoing in me. Through my first to perceive the world with a different perspective. year of highschool I witnessed transformation and change Charcoal was my main material to represent my artwork around me: my peers, teachers, classes, everyday life and as though he was in the time of the Vietnam War. I even myself. My portrait represents the past, the present and drew his present figure to symbolise how much he has the future. changed and aged. I then used coffee and tea to stain the paper to portray history. Mariann Powzun Always and Forever - My Little Brother Mixed Media on Paper St John Bosco College Engadine My little brother. How do I even begin to describe this boy? This little kid who seemed to spring out of nowhere and enter my life. I’d like to say that there’s an intricate story behind this particular moment, which I’ve illustrated in colourful acrylics, but I believe there are some people in your life who will always be there, like a rock that will keep you grounded no matter what. For me that is Nicholas. He has been with me through it all, always finding a way to splash colour into my life. Always and forever- my little brother. 165

13-15 years old Sebastian Guibani Thien Mixed Media on Paper Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield I chose to create an artwork of Nathan Kha because he is one of my closest friends at school. For the background, I added things I associate Nathan with and his interests. He carries around a mirror brooch and likes playing the game Bayonetta. I drew everything completely in pencil outlined with black pen. I am comfortable with using these materials because I have more experience with them. Riley Zuo Alexander Gromof Coloured Pencil on Paper Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield I decided to draw an image of my grandfather because my grandfather passed away when I was only  6 years old. I didn’t get to see him too much and I never got to know him either. I chose to draw my grandfather amongst the blue clouds because the clouds represent heaven to me. In my drawing I only use colouring pencils because I am confident in using these materials.  166

Tristan Polintan Hungry Jacks Tau Coloured Pencil on Paper Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield I chose to draw my friend Sione but we all call him Tau. Tau is funny. He makes me laugh and he’s very friendly. Tau works at Hungry Jacks as his part time job. I used a variety of coloured pencils and made the colour scheme bright to reflect his personality and show his work uniform. I like the way this portrait has come together and I feel it shows the type of person he is. 167

13-15 years old Ellan Novak Izzy Coloured Pencil on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove My artwork is titled Izzy, after one of my friends. I took a photo of Izzy one morning, and in the afternoon on the same day I was told there was a portrait competition. It was perfect. I chose that photo because it felt right. Friends are people you can talk to, laugh with and share memories with. It makes them so special, and makes my day when I know I get to see them. I used Prisma coloured pencil to draw Izzy, using the photo I took that was so spontaneous. 168

Jessica Zhen Elizabethan Alyssa Oil Pastel on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove This artwork is of my best friend, Alyssa. My friends and I all agreed that Alyssa resembles a woman in the Elizabethan era, specifically Queen Elizabeth the 1st. My friend has very distinct facial features that resemble Queen Elizabeth the 1st  almost like the reincarnation of her. I found inspiration for this artwork from the Darnley portrait  and artworks of high society women in the 1500s. The media I used was oil pastels to mimic the range of colours used in Elizabethan portraits. I used the oil pastels to also enhance the colours in the artwork. Rachel Alexander Lana Lead Pencil on Paper Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School Kingsgrove For the competition, my artwork is a drawing of the famous Californian singer Lana Del Rey. I chose to draw her as my special person for my artwork because I love her music and I pretty much grew up with it and I listen to it all the time. I also decided to draw her because she is a very photogenic person. I used a special A3 paper and only a range of lead pencils including 2B, Hb, 6B and 8B. Also, I used a blending stump to blend the pencils out to create a smooth effect in this artwork. 169

13-15 years old Maro Giannakopoulos Andreas Lead Pencil on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove I have grown up closely with my grandfather, and my admiration for him grew out of his countless narratives about his life in his homeland that reflected a sense of hardship tied closely with the land. This portrait is a pictorial summary of everything about my grandfather, the years of unrelenting hardships etched firmly into his face and the landscape entrenched into his character. I am hoping that the viewer will see into the soul of my grandfather and admire the depth and inner strength he instils as much as I always have and always will have. Olivia Holt Abigail Lead Pencil on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove “This composition depicts my little sister, Abigail, sketched using pencil on A4 paper. I chose to create this composition based on my little sister as her optimistic outlook on life and positive attitude is truly inspiring. As I continue through my high school journey, I am packed with assessments and homework tasks. No matter how much I stress, her encouragement and jokes never fail to brighten my day and shed some light when I’ve hit a dead end. She is truly an amazing sister and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to draw 170

Sienna Pagaimo Fionna Acrylic Paint on Paper St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove My artwork is an acrylic painting of my younger sister Fionna Pagaimo. Fionna is a unique person, I’ve never met anyone like her. She’s extremely bubbly and optimistic, and she’s always full of energy and excitement. I’ll admit at times I find this rather annoying, but somehow she always manages to make me smile. I felt the best way to capture my younger sister’s quirky character was through bright, vivid colours that will catch people’s attention just as Fionna does. But, Fionna isn’t perfect, and just like everybody else she has her own struggles, hence why I chose a contrasting deep blue to shadow her features. Blue is known to represent sadness, so by using this colour I’m hoping to inflict emotion and show that everybody struggles sometimes, even Fionna.  171

13-15 years old Leya Rafferty Splatter Watercolour on Paper Marist Catholic College Penshurst Depicted in this portrait is my lively sister, always full of energy, creativity and kindness - exactly the reason why I chose her for this painting. She’s always willing to give things a go and spreads splatters of happiness and colour into any place she visits. Her smile lights up my life and inspires me to be as outgoing as she is. The watercolour in this portrait allowed me to portray her light-hearted features, skin tone, and play with the colours. 172

Aquinas Catholic College Menai Reecce Golledge Au Domoni Iko Mixed Media on Paper My piece is called “Au Domoni Iko” which means I love you in fijian. The piece is of my Po which means grandma in my village in Fiji. The piece shows her love for her culture and her love for frangipanis.I believe that it is immensely important to create a piece that displays my Po in a way that demonstrates how I view her. She smiles without fail during hardships but I know that behind it is a brave woman that doesn’t let her experiences from immigration, poverty and motherhood stop her from smiling. I hope that this piece tells her that au domoni iko. Sienna Santa Maria The Many Sides of Gericho Mixed Media on Paper All Saints Catholic College Liverpool (7-10) Gericho Abrasaldo, is one of the people I tend to always look up to and go to for advice. He has always had a way of comfort and support for me. Ever since I was in primary school, he supported me and helped me progress greatly in all aspects of life, especially confidence in basketball. Once I had found out that he was moving to the Philippines, I found that things would change significantly and I’d miss him greatly. Drawing him was a source of remembrance, realisation and connection to the progress in my life. Thankfully he returned home. 173

13-15 years old Claudia Hanna Self Portrait As A Young Girl Acrylic Paint on Paper Mary MacKillop Catholic College Wakeley I decided to paint a self-portrait of when I was young because it made me remember the happy and fun times of myself as a little child. I chose a yellow background in the artwork which represents the joy, optimism and happiness I experienced as seen through the eyes of a young and innocent child. The blue spirals on the yellow background represent the long life my younger self lived - and thrived - to become a better person today who has endured through many challenges throughout life. Therefore this inspired me to create a painting that highlights the youthful and carefree times. Andareena Aja Sisters’ Acrylic Paint on Paper Mary MacKillop Catholic College Wakeley I painted my sister because she is so pecial to me and is such a special person- she is kind, fun and talented. 174

13-15 YEARS CATEGORY WINNER Nate Sinkovic DAD Coloured Pencil on Paper Marcellin College Randwick I chose to draw a portrait of my dad, Darren. My dad is very special to me because he is kind, caring, loving, hardworking, forgiving, encouraging, comforting, and much more. He is always there for me when I need him, always encouraging me to do things even when they may seem difficult. My dad loves his family very much. He has done so much for me throughout my life and I do not know what I would do without him. He is my role model and protector and for that reason, I chose to draw him. 175

193--1125 yyeeaarrss oolldd Abigail Cook Archie & Goose Watercolour on Paper Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton Through my portrait, ‘Archie & Goose’, I intend to illustrate the connection my brother has with our beloved pet, Goose. The composition of them embracing each other, coupled with my brother’s affectionate gaze, further demonstrate their strong bond. My loose and gestural brushstrokes show my personal style of artmaking. Cherry Hood’s watercolour portraits were a major influence on my portrait. 176

Sarah Elia Tia’ Acrylic Paint on Paper Mary MacKillop Catholic College Wakeley For my portrait, I’ve painted my younger sister Tia who is currently 7 years old. I was inspired to paint Tia by a photo I saw on my camera roll. I chose that specifically because of her dazzling smile and her big bright brown eyes. In that image, she looked young and I was reminded of all the fun and great times we’d had together. I’ve tried my hardest to recreate that image the way I view her. Young, free, gorgeous, and endearing. 177

16-18 years old Niamh Hesson Mia Lead Pencil on Paper De La Salle College Cronulla My Picture of Mia is inspired by a portrait of female French Natural Philosopher Emilie du Chatelet. It is by an unknown artist. Mia is my close friend and a very thoughtful person. I have adopted the hand to the face pose, the traditional signifier of the philosopher in portraiture. Emilie translated Newton from Latin into French and achieved great renown for her intellectual accomplishments. This was a considerable achievement for a woman in 18th Century France where opportunities for females were limited. Mia has great intellectual curiousity in the arts and literature, so I thought an appropriation of a contemplative woman’s portrait would be suitable. 178

HONOURABLE MENTIONS Sienna Salvato This is Your Captain Speaking Charcoal on Paper De La Salle College Cronulla Langa is our school captain and loves to begin his address over the PA system with the call sign, “This is your Captain speaking!” He has a great sense of humour and is involved in everything that is going on, especially music and performance. He has a very expressive face and hand gestures to match. I love to work in black and white charcoal pencils to get strong contrast and rich tones. 179

16-18 years old HONOURABLE MENTIONS Sienna D’acciaro Sappi Tutto (Know all) (2022) Graphite on Paper Penshurst - Marist Catholic College “Sappi Tutto” is a Calabrese phrase that reflects who I perceive my dad to be. It represents his wit and sarcasm, but also his wisdom. I wanted to portray his significant influence on myself and my brothers through the angle of the drawing and his facial expressions - he is not only a wise onlooker, but the angle reflects an image of a leader and a role model. My father is one of my greatest influences and the qualities I present through the drawing demonstrate how he has shaped me into the person I am today.  180

Lily Henderson A Reminder to Always Have Fun Lead Pencil on Paper St Patrick’s College Sutherland My younger brother plays a huge role in my life. His quirky nature is always a reminder to have fun. Drawing him was my escape from the real world as it allowed me to reflect on myself when I was younger, but also enabled me to consider the pressures that you have as you get older. My brother, in his young age, views the world with excitement and adventure. Jorja Brymer The Strength of My Dad Lino printing St Patrick’s College Sutherland My father is someone that I greatly admire. He has never failed to make me laugh with his awful dad jokes. He is the best father I could ask for and I love him with all of my heart. I chose to create this portrait through lino printing because I like how the technique creates boldness and strength in the shadows of my dad’s face. This lino print truly depicts my dad’s character through the simplified style. 181

16-18 years old Belen Campos Emily Mercurio Her Potato swirl Lead Pencil on Paper Mixed Media on Paper Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights The person I drew in this artwork is my friend Jennifer. I She has been by my side through every phase of my life chose her in this particular photo because it was taken and holds a special place in my heart. I chose to draw at the Christmas carols and I had a great time there one of my best friends of almost ten years. She has with her and the rest of my friends. This photo is from helped me throughout my school years, and without her when she ordered the spiral potato stick from one of encouragement, I could not have created this artwork. the food trucks. I chose to draw this picture of her that was captured at my Quinceañera in 2022, just before her name was called to enter the main venue. Mirabelle and I both made portraits of each other with pictures taken from the same day to enter this prize. I have chosen graphite and a monochromatic colour palette to express this significant memory. 182

Lucia Paiano Moment in Time Lead Pencil on Paper Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights One day my dad took my sister and I on one of our little spontaneous ‘adventures’. We walked through one of our favourite places ‘The Rocks’. A peaceful-looking man held a gorgeous colourful bird and allowed us to hold it. Children, as well as adults stared in awe at its beauty. Pure joy flooded my father’s face, which was when I quickly took a photo. It wasn’t posed or forced, just pure happiness. I used different grades of lead pencils to produce the monochromatic look and further symbolise how it’s a captured memory of a moment in time. 183

16-18 years old Finn Woods Smith Josh Black marker pen on paper De La Salle College Cronulla Josh is a classmate of mine, and a great, fun guy. His family have a Mauritian background and all love art. Josh is a great painter of portraits on canvas, so I have created a portrait of a portraitist. I have used black ink markers from brush point to very fine nibs and explored a number a different techniques including hatching and stippling. I have been inspired by Durer’s woodcuts and the way in which he can create “colour” by using various mark making techniques. 184

Leila Smith Mum “Katie” Lead Pencil on Paper De La Salle College Cronulla This is a drawing of one of the most important people in my life. My mum is always there for me, and she has helped guide me through tough times. She is a free-spirited person who knows what she wants and finds practical ways to achieve it. She loves the water and sailing, even participating in the Sydney to Hobart. She is my biggest inspiration and is the person I aspire to be like. Marist College Eastwood Jonathan Kim Oldest Sister Acrylic Paint on Paper My artwork conveys the special connection between me and my sister. I painted my sister because she is special to me as she has taken care of me everyday until she moved out but still took care of me and checked up on me through text. She is special to me because she feels like my second mother, and my other sister also feels like a third mother. My oldest sister that I painted is turning 31 this year, but still looks young even though I have painted her to what she would really look like when she is older. 185

16-18 years old Llachlan Lee 媽 (Mum) Acrylic Paint on Paper Marist College Eastwood “A mother is she who can take the place of others but whose place no one else can take.” - Cardinal Meymillod. My body of work encapsulates the connection a mother and child has with one another in its entirety. The complexity of life, the opportunities provided and lost is but the most indescribable ultimatum that a mother has to struggle with. The embodiment of parental love, birth to life and guiding hand can be summed up into 媽. Zach Harm Nam Love Lead Pencil on Paper Marist College Eastwood My Mum has played a significant role in my life. She has always taken good care of me, made me laugh and helped me through the good times and the tough times. I used realism in my portrait to convey her loving personality and happiness while also conveying her strength, perseverance and sacrifice. A mother’s infinite love for her children cannot really be expressed in words, that is why I tried to render my love for her in my drawing, in each contour, line and shade. 186

Benjamin Jin Hal-abeoji Oil Paint on Paper Marist College Eastwood My Artwork “Hal-abeoji” which means “Grandfather” in Korean, is a portrait of my grandfather who is living in South Korea. Since I was young my grandfather always supported me, and loved me more than others could have done. He was always someone I looked up to as a leader, a person who cares for others and a man with a very generous heart. In this painting I tried to express the boldness and generosity of my grandfather that I see from him. 187

196--1128 yyeeaarrss oolldd HONOURABLE MENTIONS Nelson Fasavalu Pauta Eli : Tina tamaoaiga I faamanuiaga Coloured Pencil on Paper Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield In this Piece “Pauta Eli : Tina tamaoaiga I faamanuiaga”  translating into Pauta Eli : Mother most fruitful, frames the relationship I experience with my Grandmother. Having her in the room changed the presence. It was like an aura of joy and happiness followed her and encased everyone in the room into this safe haven filled with constant smiles and endless laughter. Even though I did not speak the native tongue, that love and joy was still portrayed and did not need translation. This piece pays tribute to her passing. She’s here as in heaven, forever in our hearts. 188

Andrew Lee T-800 Lead on Paper? De La Salle Caringbah T-800 is a drawing of my friend, whom I look up to with great respect and consider one of my closest friends. The illustration depicts my friend, who is involved in boxing, in the pose of one of his favourite boxers Muhammad Ali. Ali’s quote, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” can best describe my friend when taken out of a boxing context. Like a butterfly, he floats about, but instead of being in the ring, he floats around in my heart through his kind, caring and charismatic nature. He stings like a bee, but instead of issuing knock-out punches, he issues motivation and inspires my friends and me through his fantastic physique and hard-working nature. T-800, which can be seen on the boxer’s trunk and the drawing’s title, is a reference to my friend’s favourite film, ‘The Terminator’, that I added as per a suggestion from a friend. Additionally, I added the Austrian flag on his trunks to represent his nationality. Anabelle Lukunic Light of my Life Lead Pencil on Paper Marist Catholic College Penshurst Our grandmothers, we love and feel safe around them. Their smile gives us strength. I aim to share and capture the moments my grandma has smiled, laughed or made a funny face. Through creating ‘Light of my Life’ I intend to put a smile on other people’s faces and remind them of times they have shared with their grandmothers. The times a grandmother has cooked with you, watched something or visited you when you were sick. These are the special moments one can remember for a lifetime. Our grandmothers make us feel comfortable and loved. 189

16-18 years old Ebony Kennedy Life Story Lead Pencil on Paper Brigidine College Randwick In my drawing I wanted to display my gratitude towards the people close to me in my life. I decided to draw a self portrait and add miniature drawings of my friends and family around my head. I did this to indicate that they are always with me in my thoughts and memories, I am beyond grateful for all of the memories I have created with them over the years. When creating my artwork I cut out different shapes for each miniature drawing to make them look more graphic and creative. Once I was happy with the shape, I then laid them out to create a layered collage and added myself to the middle of the page with the rest of the drawings. Each of these pieces come together to complete the puzzle and tell the story of those who influence me the most. Evie Sztor Mackenzie Lead Pencil on Paper Randwick - Brigidine College The artwork I have made, Mackenzie, is a drawing of my sister. We were at an outdoor dinner and decided to do a photoshoot with the seafood. This shows her funny side, other than being annoying she is always by my side even if we are fighting. I chose her because she’s in most of the photos in my camera roll and she always loves to pose and act for the camera. My sister has played a significant role in who I am today. I created this artwork using a lead pencil because I liked the versatility and confidence it gives me as a medium to use, as I am able to erase, work back into and vary the depth of the mark made by applying different amounts of pressure. 190

Jenna Habelreeh Unseen Watercolour on Paper Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton My portrait embodies the numbness and lack of self-esteem felt when struggling to comprehend my own mental health. The solemnity of my body of work, illustrated through the floating portrait amid the negative space, captures the mood I feel within. My artwork draws inspiration from the intensity and introspection Lucian Freud explores in his artworks that relate back to my own personal life experiences. 191

There are a lot of reasons for that. She makes great food, alongside grandpa. She beams an uplifting presence in the room that is unreproducible; her laugh is infectious and she is a wonderful family mother. I know that, and so does my family. But, grandma probably doesn’t know that about herself. That she’s special. So I painted her to show her what she means to me. I hope she sees herself in this portrait painting as I see her, colourful, wise and affectionate. 192

Lily Webster Lineage Coloured Pencil on Paper Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton Throughout my portrait, my aim was to not only capture my grandmother, but also to capture her family oriented nature, as illustrated through the warm colour palette. Through the inclusion of my family tree, I strived to depict how she was not only driven by family, yet also, she largely contributes to my family through her love and support of the lineage that succeeds her. 193
