Next\tmorning,\tearly,\tthe\tthree\tof\tus\tcleared\tout,\tstraightway\tafter\tbreakfast-- on\t foot,\t of\t course.\t Each\t of\t us\t carried\t a\t dozen\t of\t Millet's\t small\t pictures, purposing\t to\t market\t them.\t Carl\t struck\t for\t Paris,\t where\t he\t would\t start\t the\t work of\tbuilding\tup\tMillet's\tfame\tagainst\tthe\tcoming\tgreat\tday.\tClaude\tand\tI\twere\tto separate,\tand\tscatter\tabroad\tover\tFrance. I\t take\t credit\t to\t myself\t for\t our\t plan\t of\t selling\t the\t pictures--it\t was\t mine.\t I suggested\t it\t that\t last\t evening\t when\t we\t were\t laying\t out\t our\t campaign,\t and\t all three\tof\tus\tagreed\tto\tgive\tit\ta\tgood\tfair\ttrial\tbefore\tgiving\tit\tup\tfor\tsome\tother.\tIt succeeded\twith\tall\tof\tus.\tI\twalked\tonly\ttwo\tdays,\tClaude\twalked\ttwo--both\tof\tus afraid\tto\tmake\tMillet\tcelebrated\ttoo\tclose\tto\thome--but\tCarl\twalked\tonly\thalf\ta day,\tthe\tbright,\tconscienceless\trascal,\tand\tafter\tthat\the\ttraveled\tlike\ta\tduke. Every\t now\t and\t then\t we\t got\t in\t with\t a\t country\t editor\t and\t started\t an\t item around\t through\t the\t press;\t not\t an\t item\t announcing\t that\t a\t new\t painter\t had\t been discovered,\t but\t an\t item\t which\t let\t on\t that\t everybody\t knew\t Francois\t Millet;\t not","an\t item\t praising\t him\t in\t any\t way,\t but\t merely\t a\t word\t concerning\t the\t present condition\t of\t the\t \\\"master\\\"--sometimes\t hopeful,\t sometimes\t despondent,\t but always\ttinged\twith\tfears\tfor\tthe\tworst.\tWe\talways\tmarked\tthese\tparagraphs,\tand sent\tthe\tpapers\tto\tall\tthe\tpeople\twho\thad\tbought\tpictures\tof\tus. Carl\t was\t soon\t in\t Paris,\t and\t he\t worked\t things\t with\t a\t high\t hand.\t He\t made friends\t with\t the\t correspondents,\t and\t got\t Millet's\t condition\t reported\t to\t England and\tall\tover\tthe\tcontinent,\tand\tAmerica,\tand\teverywhere. At\t the\t end\t of\t six\t weeks\t from\t the\t start,\t we\t three\t met\t in\t Paris\t and\t called\t a halt,\t and\t stopped\t sending\t back\t to\t Millet\t for\t additional\t pictures.\t The\t boom\t was so\t high,\t and\t everything\t so\t ripe,\t that\t we\t saw\t that\t it\t would\t be\t a\t mistake\t not\t to strike\tnow,\tright\taway,\twithout\twaiting\tany\tlonger.\tSo\twe\twrote\tMillet\tto\tgo\tto bed\tand\tbegin\tto\twaste\taway\tpretty\tfast,\tfor\twe\tshould\tlike\thim\tto\tdie\tin\tten\tdays if\the\tcould\tget\tready. Then\twe\tfigured\tup\tand\tfound\tthat\tamong\tus\twe\thad\tsold\teighty-five\tsmall pictures\tand\tstudies,\tand\thad\tsixty-nine\tthousand\tfrancs\tto\tshow\tfor\tit.\tCarl\thad made\t the\t last\t sale\t and\t the\t most\t brilliant\t one\t of\t all.\t He\t sold\t the\t \\\"Angelus\\\"\t for twenty-two\thundred\tfrancs.\tHow\twe\tdid\tglorify\thim!--not\tforeseeing\tthat\ta\tday was\t coming\t by\t and\t by\t when\t France\t would\t struggle\t to\t own\t it\t and\t a\t stranger would\tcapture\tit\tfor\tfive\thundred\tand\tfifty\tthousand,\tcash.
