A Wishing for School he opening ofthe school in the Kanawha Valley* brought to me one ofthe worst disappointments that I ever experienced. I had been working in a salt-furnace for several months and mv stepfather had realised how valuable I was to the family earninis. So, when the school opened he decided that he could not spar-e me from my work. This decision seemed to cloud my every ambition. The disappointment was mad'e.all the worse because from rny place of work I coul^J see ttre happy children passing to and ftom school, mominqs and afternoons. Despite this disappointment, however, I was deteriined that I would learn something. After a while, I made arrangements with the teacher to qive me some lessons at night, after the day's work was done. These night lessons were so welcome that I think I leamed more at night than the other children did during the day But my heart was still set on going to the day-school and I argued for it every chance I got. Finally I won and was permitted to go to the school in the day for a few months. However, I had to promise to rise early in the morning and work in the furnace till nine odock. I a.lso had to return

immediately after school closed in the afternoon, for at least two more hours ofwork. The schoolhouse was some distance from the furnace. As I had to work till nine otlock and the school opened at nine, I found myself in a difiiculty. School would always be begun before I reached it. To solve this problem., I did something which most people would disapprove of. There was a large cloc-k in a litde office in the furnace. I got the idea that the way for me to reach school on time was to move the clock hands from half-past eight up to the nine o'clock mark. This I found myself doing morning after morning, till the furnace 'boss' discovered that something was wrong and locked the clock in a case.I did not mean to bother anybody; I simply meant to reach that schoolhouse on time. The Gity of Burning Lakes? n the evening ofThurs day, 76February 2017, residents of the south-east part ofBengaluru noticed huge plumes of smoke rising into the sky. The smoke was coming ftom the middle of Bellandur Lake, the biggest lake in the city. They realised that the seerningly impossible had happened-the lake had caught fire. Even fire fighters wondered how a blaze in the water could be put out. The fue in the lake bumed for 12 hours and left behind a black patch in the centre, according to witnesses. This is the new story of Bengaluru- state capital and once upon a timg the 'City of Lakes'. @

The latest incident is not the first time the lake has caught fire; it happened first in May 2015. A few days later, it was in the news again for being covered in snowlike froth. The froth was the result ofchemical waste dumped in the lake. It was poisonous enough to crack windshields, wear the paint offcar hoods and worsen the respiratory issues that have troubled citizens in {ecent years. Dr T V Ramachandra ofthe Indian Institute ofScience (IISc) has been studying the lakes in Bengaluru for over two decades. He explains that around 400-600 million litres ofuntreated sewage is let into Bellandur Lake every day. \"There are several plant species like water hyacinths growing in the lake, thick enough to walk on\" he says. \"People dump solid waste on top ofit. This creates the perfect poisonous environment for catching fire.\" Long before it began its slow and painful deatlr, Bellandur Lake was one ofmany lakes in Bengaluru that provided clean water for the needs ofthe population. In the 1970s, there were still 285 lakes in the city. Today, however, there are just I94lakes and the large majority ofthem have sewage dumped in them. The rest are slowly being drained and converted into land for housing the increasing population ofBengaluru. The water pollution in Bengaluru poses a serious threat to residents' health and creates a severe shortage ofclean water. All in all, experts predict that Bengaluru will be unlivableby 2025. froth: mass ofsmallbubbles on top of a liquid untreated sewage: waste waterfrom houses that has not been cleaned or purified drained: emptied threat possible danqer

MeowTalk Do you know what your cat is saying? Cats can be ttrysterious-affectionate one minute and unt'riendly the next. But we think this can help break their code language. Displaying tummy When a cat rolls over on its belly, it means you've won its trust. This puts the cat in a r-ulnerable position as its soft belly is exposed and it cannot run away easily. But for many cats it can be a betrayal oftrust ifyou rub them on the belly and it will result in a nip and scratch. Blinking Ifyour cat is blinking slowly and lazily, that is another sign it trusts you. When cats don't trust someone, they never let them out oftheir sight and stare at them unblinkingly. To return the affection, blink back at your cat in a slow, unhurried manner. Tail placement A cat's tail indicates its emotional state. When it is relaxed and held in an upright position, that means the cat is feeling friendly. A stifftail vulnerable: easy to harm exposed: not protected betrayal: disloyaltyto someone who trusts you

indicates tension and carefulness, while one that is held low indicates fear. Ifyou see your cat's tail puffed up, with its fiu standing on end it means itt angry or afraid.
