Grammar Adverbs of time and frequency You have learnt about adverbs earlier. Adverbs are words that describe a verb, adjective or another adverb. There are different kinds of adverbs. Kinds of adverbs Adverbs of Adverbs of Adverbs of Adverbs of Adverbs of time place manner degree frequency Remember: Adverbs of manner tell us the way in which something is done. They are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object. Adverbs of manner answer the question 'how?' or 'in what manner?'. Example: He swims well. Adverbs of degree tell us about the degree of something. They answer the question ‘how much?' or ‘to what extent?'. Example: She is extremely smart. Adverbs of place tell us about the place, location or direction of an action and answer the question ‘where?’. Example: I looked for my book everywhere. Underline the adverbs of manner, degree and place in the given sentences. Write AM next to sentences with adverbs of manner and AD next to sentences that have adverbs of degree. Write AP next to sentences that have adverbs of place. •  Your tablet is completely broken. •  They took the guests inside. •  It is terribly cold here. •  The balloons flew upwards. •  Wait for me. I’ve almost reached! •  My uncle’s house is nearby. •  The workshop was very entertaining. Rip Van Winkle 9 NR_BGM_181910040_Maple G5_Workbook English_Term2_text.pdf 11 2/17/2018 11:32:08 AM

Let us learn about adverbs of time and frequency. Read the following sentences: Adverbs of time: They tell us when an action happened or for how long. I visited Goa last year. Goldilocks stayed at the bears' They have lived in this house (when) house all day long. (how long) since 1998. (how long) Here are some more examples: When today, before, later, yesterday, tomorrow, last year, later, now How long all day, a week, a month, two hours, a while Adverbs of time are usually placed at the ends of sentences. Examples: She has to leave now. We will call you later. We stayed in Mumbai for a week. I met an old friend yesterday. Adverbs of frequency: They tell us how often something occurs or somebody does something. In other words, they show routine or repeated activities. We always study after class. Rita is often late for work. I usually watch movies on Sundays. 10 2/17/2018 11:32:08 AM NR_BGM_181910040_Maple G5_Workbook English_Term2_text.pdf 12

Adverbs of frequency are usually placed before the main verbs and after the helping verbs. Examples: My father rarely gets angry. I seldom eat junk food. We sometimes go out for movies. We are never late for rehearsals. (after helping verb) Exercise 3.1: Read the following passage and underline the adverbs. One is done for you. It was a cold and wintry night, and the wind blew gently. A ship was sailing westwards on the sea. Suddenly, there was a storm, and the passengers on deck were completely drenched in the heavy rain that beat upon them. They ran into their cabins immediately and started praying for the storm to subside. They were scared, and they cried bitterly in desperation. In the morning, the floor of the ship developed cracks, and water started entering. The passengers on board were rescued quickly before the ship sank. They are called question tags. 12 NR_BGM_181910040_Maple G5_Workbook English_Term2_text.pdf 14 2/17/2018 11:32:08 AM

A question tag is a small question at the end of a statement. It is used when asking for agreement or confirmation. They are more common in spoken than written English. Examples: • He is from India, isn’t he? (confirmation) • We should eat dinner, shouldn’t we? (agreement) Remember: The question tag uses the same verb as the main statement. They were playing here, weren’t they? In this sentence, the question tag uses the helping verb ‘were’. A positive statement A negative question tag Positive statement Negative tag You will finish your lunch, won’t you? She has left, hasn’t she? You are a magician, aren’t you? She had sung the song before I came, hadn’t she? He was surprised, wasn’t he? They were angry, weren’t they? Simple present tense You play the piano, don’t you? They don't like movies, do they? Simple past tense They travelled to Shimla, didn’t She did not complete her project, they? did she? Comparative degree Superlative degree Remember: Adjectives have three degrees of comparison. •  T he positive degree shows the quality of something or someone. Example: I have a big dog. •  T he comparative degree is used to compare two things or people with the same quality. Example: My friend’s dog is bigger than mine. •  The superlative degree is used to compare more than two people or things. It singles out one from the rest. Example: My neighbour’s dog is the biggest I have seen. •  Regular adjectives form their comparative and superlative degrees by adding -er and -est or more and most. For words that end in '-e', we form the comparative and superlative degrees by adding -r and -st respectively. Examples: small - smaller - smallest difficult - more difficult - most difficult       nice - nicer - nicest •  Irregular adjectives do not follow any set rules or patterns to form their comparative and superlative degrees. Sometimes, a whole new word is used. Examples: good - better - best Look at the following table for more examples of regular adjectives. Language in Use Simple past and present perfect tenses Underline the verbs that are in the simple past tense in the following paragraph: Last Sunday, I went to a mall with my friends. We ate Italian food at a restaurant. We also had ice creams and doughnuts. After that, we went for bowling at the Gaming Centre. I won most of the games. We watched a movie in the afternoon. Then, we visited a coffee shop. We played some board games and sang songs. It was a day full of fun and frolicking! Conjunctions Coordinating Correlative Subordinating conjunctions conjunctions conjunctions Let us learn about the third type of conjunction: correlative conjunctions. Correlative conjunctions Meher is hungry at night. Her mother asks her what she wants to eat. Meher says that she wants neither vegetables nor fruits to eat. She says she wants either a burger or potato fries. She also wants sweets. Her mother tells her that having junk food and too many sweets is not good. They are not only unhealthy but also bad for Meher’s teeth. See the word pairs ‘neither… nor’, ‘either… or’ and ‘not only… but also’ in the paragraph above. These word pairs are called correlative conjunctions. As the name suggests, correlative conjunctions work in pairs to join phrases or words that carry equal importance within a sentence. 42 2/17/2018 11:32:09 AM NR_BGM_181910040_Maple G5_Workbook English_Term2_text.pdf 44

Language in Use Active and passive voice ‘Voice’ in English shows the relation between the subject and the action. There are two kinds of voices. In the active voice, the subject does the action. Examples: • William Wordsworth wrote the poem ‘Daffodils’. • Dogs eat meat. In both the above examples, the voice is active because the subject (‘William Wordsworth’ and ‘Dogs’) is the doer of the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action. Examples: • The poem ‘Daffodils’ was written by William Wordsworth. • Meat is eaten by dogs. Here, the object of the verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. Remember: The passive voice is formed with the verb ‘be’ and the past participle, which is different for regular verbs and irregular verbs. General rules for changing active voice to passive voice • First, identify the subject, verb and object (SVO). • Then, change the object into the subject. • Add the suitable helping verb. • Change the verb into its past participle form. • Add the preposition ‘by’. • C hange the subject into the object. In case of pronouns, ensure that subject pronouns are changed to object pronouns. The Mountain Railways 45 NR_BGM_181910040_Maple G5_Workbook English_Term2_text.pdf 47 2/17/2018 11:32:09 AM
