On our cover BISS Ch Ha'Penny Blue Blossom ROMX CH Brambledale Boz ex BIS CH Brambledale Blue Bonnet CD The history of Ha’Penny is, in many ways, the history of Ha’Penny Blue Blossom. The daughter of the first American Beardie champion, Brambledale Blue Bonnet, Blossom was the foundation bitch of Ha’Penny. Blossom gave birth to 20 champions, nine of whom were group winners. She is also the only Beardie bitch to whelp three Best in Show winners - Ha’Penny Moon Shadow, Ha’Penny Hoyden at Edmar and Ha’Penny Such Sweet Thunder. Her litter sister, Ha’Penny Lucy Locket, had 11 champions, so the two sisters together produced a remarkable 31 champions. Blossom was, in her own right, an amazing show dog. She was the number one Beardie for two years, and had a commanding ring presence. One judge commented many years after she retired, “whenever I looked, she was always looking at me with a mien that said ‘your job is to put me up’, so I did.” She never lost her love of dog shows and showing. Even at fourteen or fifteen, she always thought she went to a show to go into the ring and, of course, win. To her dying day and beyond, she was the absolute alpha of our house, ruling benevolently, but with an iron paw if necessary. Thanks to the miracle of frozen semen, her legacy continues. Michele Marini and I have a new litter by her son Moon Shadow, and one of her grandchildren is in the ring this year as our special. She is as much with me as she was when she was alive, through all her descendants. There will never be another Blossom; and those of us who were lucky enough to know her are well aware of that, and grateful that she graced us with her presence for 15 years. Also in this issue, Ha’Penny celebrates our ROMX bitches, all of whom are related to her in one way or another. I also included our ROMAX CH Ha’Penny Some Like It Hot, and made a special exception for BIS CH Ha’Penny Carob Rigbey. She fell one short of ROMX, but only because she only had nine puppies, all of whom were AKC champions. Mrs. J. Richard Schneider Spring 2019 Brood Bitch, Puuppy & Veteran Issue 1

On Alistair'sourbackcover Busy Doing Nothing Swedish CH Alistair's Uppercut ex Swedish CH Alistair's Troublemaker Eric We are extremely grateful to Johan & Nina Lönner Andersson for this beautiful boy that just turned two years old. Erik is more stunning now, then he was as a puppy. All OFA testing is in process. Erik was purchased on a whim; his quality was reinforced by another Swedish breeder, who said I should buy him, so I did! It was that easy to attain another true love of my life. We are thankful to artist Jo Warren for the lovely portrait on the back cover of this issue. Erik’s sire is SW CH Alistair’s Uppercut; his dam is the lovely SW CH Alistair’s Troublemaker. Both are stellar winners in the beautiful country of Sweden. Erik is presented by Valerie Nunes-Atkinson. We are looking forward to a great future with this team. Owned by Tom and Marilynn Severson Editor’s Letter I had to ask myself what can I write about in this issue? Well, for starters the Board has accepted my bid for another year to produce the Bulletin. I am pleased to report that The Bulletin remains self funded thru subscription and advertising revenue. Although advertising/subscription rates have not been lowered, there have been increases in postage. Our expenses still include awarding the top placing winners of our National Specialty substantial discounts, as well as slotting in 16 pages of full coverage of the National along with a four page color photo essay. We have been discounting memorial ads 5% and paying the cost of a print to send the advertiser on their memorial ads. This is accomplished with your financial support throughout the year. So, when you think about advertising and exactly what benefits you receive, I just pointed to you some of the reasons why your support is needed. We have developed less expensive ways to advertise your Beardie with our targeted promotional sections: Stud Dog; Brood Bitch/Puppies/Veterans; Performance. Hopefully, you will continue to support your breed publication. I am also happy to report that a free subscription for a digital version of our magazine is offered to all new AKC herding judges as well as any judge who requests the magazine. Our list is growing and judges have been quite complimentary about our publication. This issue contains an entertaining article from Judith Leroy as well as an article on Puppy Exercise. We have critiques from two specialties, photo essays, Obedience and Conformation awards for 2018 plus our feature Puppy, Brood Bitch and Vetersn section! I hope you enjoy this issue and congratulate yourselves for making The Beardie Bulletin a success. Lillian Esposito ~ Editor Spring 2019 Brood Bitch, Puuppy & Veteran Issue 3

Delilah July 15, 2003 - July 11, 2018 Am/Can CH Meadows’ Nothing So Delightful CD RE NAJ NA CGC ROM Alovely little bitch from Isabelle’s second litter to Denzel was chosen to live with my husband and me. Her name was suggested by the stud dog’s breeder, Linda Evans. It wasn’t a name I would have chosen, but as time went by I got used to it and realized that it fit her perfectly — Meadows’ Nothing So Delightful. Our wonderful Delilah grew up to be my once in a lifetime dream. She finished her championship pretty easily — winning WB & BOW at the 2004 National Specialty and finishing up the next spring by winning WB, BOW and BOS at the 2005 National Capital BCC Specialty. Added to these accomplishments were the BCCA Ryan Award in Novice Jumpers, multiple group wins, as well as obedience and agility titles. Delilah ... that very special girl who took Claudia and me on the ride of a lifetime. Forever loved. Owned and loved by Carolyn and Art Hoffmann • Co-owned by Claudia McNulty

Smokes’ job: keep the Obedience Junkie for sheep around me. When he forced the sheep past me (too much Herding pressure), I’d give him a command to gather them up and bring Oficionados them to me. It took me 50 minutes (of So, why didn’t I drop out the unneeded commands with Smokes? my allotted hour lesson) to get him to work a teeny weeny bit. I suppose it’s because I didn’t trust him to do the right thing. But dogs need to make mistakes in order to learn (just like people). In herding, they need to use their instinct and correctly respond to accurate commands in order to excel in the endeavor. My exces- sive commands were putting a damper on Smokes’ instincts and his herding enthusiasm. I could just kick myself. Well, the damage has been done and Smokes and I are rehabbing together. It is lambing season, so Smokes will be doing double work: herding practice and farm chores. Not ideal, as each requires a different skill set; yet it may be beneficial and complimentary to the other task. I thought about it and thought about it. Tracy Parciak (instructor) 39 told me that by now Smokes should be able to do an outrun, lift and fetch without any words from me (he has an HIAs and one leg toward his HXAs). She was right. I had slowly taken all his power away from him through excessive commands. Spring 2019 Brood Bitch, Puuppy & Veteran Issue

NEW TRACKING TITLE IN 2018 There was one new tracking title in 2018. Congratulations to Sharon Prassa and her girl Mae, Pentangle Skirts In The Dirt TD PT,on earning the Tracking Dog title. 2018 BCCA OBEDIENCE AWARDS The “Top Obedience Dog Award” is given at each obedience level and computed as follows: a point value is assigned to a dog’s placement under each of the following point systems - average scores, and Shuman System. Average scores are calculated from the scores of all qualifying legs earned during the calendar year. The Shuman System assigns a point value for each qualifying score. Dogs are assigned a point value (i.e. the beardie with the highest average score would be 1st place and earns 10 points, the next highest score would earn 9 points, and so on.) All dogs with the same score will be assigned the same point value. The point values accumulated by a dog under each of the systems are totaled for the year. The dog with the highest total in each of the levels is awarded that year’s Top Dog for that level. Each year’s tabulations begin on January 1st and include qualifying scores through December 31st. In 2018 there were 255 qualifying legs earned by Beardies, a decrease of 28 from 2017. To compute the award, all qualifying scores and placements of dogs in each class in the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Excellent and Master levels of Rally were taken into consideration. The statistics were taken from the AKC custom quarterly reports for Rally for 2018. The Intermediate and Masters classes were added to Rally on November 1, 2017. Only members of the BCCA are eligible to receive the award, which will be presented this year at the 2019 National Specialty in Asheville, North Carolina. To determine the “Top Dog” in each level of Rally, a point value is given to a dog’s placement under two systems: average score and Shuman. The point values under each of the two systems are accumulated during the year, and the dog with the highest total in each level is awarded that year’s “Top Dog” in his/her particular level. The scoring system was based on the methodology used for the “Top Dog” in obedience award. The top ten Beardies for 2018 in Rally Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Excellent and Master are listed below. In 2018, 15 Beardies titled in Rally Novice, 15 titled in Rally Intermediate 14 titled in Rally Advanced, 9 titled in Rally Excellent, 2 titled in Rally Advanced Excellent, one titled in Rally Advanced Excellent 2 and 2 titled in Master.
