Don’t let China Fill the Vacuum “We must be in a position to convert the crisis into an opportunity” – Narendra Modi COVID19 Pandemic has brought a global crisis, not about economy or trade, but it is about global leadership. We need to critically analyze the global scenario for developing a broad idea about future leadership, future superpower; and the focus shall be CHINA. Beijing is being aggressive in mainly two sectors; claiming the global markets and it’s diplomatic as well as geographical expansionary policy. It dreams of fulfilling the first by economic strength that is its “debt-trap diplomacy” and second through the military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, which has recently gained momentum. While the world except China was in lockdown, it was assumed that China will be successful in completing the first of its ambitions of re-capturing the global markets and emerging as an Economic Superpower when all others are busy fighting the Chinese Virus. However, this ambition cannot be said to be fulfilled, reason being (a) world markets are yet to open up fully, (b) less purchasing power of 124
developing economies and (c) South-East Asian countries are experiencing the ill effects of the debt trap diplomacy of China and hence they are moving away from Chinese Debt. One has to understand that the Chinese economy is dependent on the international markets (which are still down), especially when it comes to becoming the superpower. China is an “export-led economy”. Surprisingly, China now for the first time claims the Natuna Islands of Indonesia in the South China Sea. The Galvan Valley clash is sufficient to explain the expansionist policy of China. What would China achieve by scaring the governments, making their people angry and turn their defense force to aggression? The answer is simple, Brinkmanship; and China with its partner North Korea is an expert in doing this.. China’s invasion in World Health The organization is evident. No nation is blind to ignore the immature response of the WHO headed by China sponsored Dr Tedros. USA’s claim about the Zero Yield nuclear tests conducted by China, relocation of Chinese 8 war vessels in the Indian Ocean, slow pace of de-escalation talks creates serious concern about the aggression of this authoritarian state. The United States of America, which assumed the role of world Super Power for more than three decades now, has completely reversed its policy. It was always “America First” for the Trump administration. COVID19 gave him a fresh chance. He already has started it, by cutting the money flow towards WHO. The USA has already withdrawn from Trans-Pacific Partnership. Afghanistan Peacekeeping forces are brought to minimal levels. And though the exit of Trump is clear after elections, it must not be confused with ‘Trumpism.’ It will very well continue in Biden administration as well; though we can see a more ‘civilized’ form of it. Who else has the potential to lead then? Europe was never and now is no longer in a position to play the role of a ‘dominant’ in world politics. Russia is still struggling with its economy after the Crimea crisis and US sanctions. This will and has already created a vacuum. In my opinion, we must not let China fill the vacuum, we must not let an authoritarian state fill the vacuum. It not only is a window of opportunity for India to lead the world, but it also becomes its moral obligation. The country with democratic values, with rule of law, with the certainty of policy, transparency in governance and most importantly, no mala fide intention in trade must lead the world in the 21st century. 125

Somewhere down the memory lane we all have an experience where we used to spend the complete summer holidays playing indoors and outdoors games. Let it be the old summer holidays or the college days we still find that one chance to engage our self in some or the other sports. This section is about an adventurous ride of sports which will drive you crazy and will motivate you to find out the inner champion in you. “SPORTS ARENA”, CHEERS ON SPORTS!. This section encourages everyone to give a kick to one self to move a step ahead. Sport is not only about winning its more about never giving up. Not only the winners but each and every participant who works wholeheartedly to be at the first position is winner in himself. If you want to make a new record first break your own record. The greatest thing to remember is that no matter how many years have already passed, how much of sacrifice, hard work ,dedication ,determination ,practise you have put in , just you need to remember is one day it is going to pay you back and that can be your greatest achievement of all. Athlete USAIN BOLT: he has won 9 gold medals in last 3 Olympics and has run less than a minute on the track He has ran less than 115 seconds in total and made $119 million .But for those 115 seconds he trained himself for 20+ years. This is patience, hard work, practise everything that you put in for that one day to come. So never ever loose hope or give up. ARCEON 21 THE BLACK MAMBA And the helicopter crashed in Calabasas, California on 26th January 2020, taking away the life of one of the most precious gems in the history of Basketball. 5-time NBA Champion, 2-time NBA Finals MVP, 2008 NBA MVP, 12-time NBA All-Star, 3-time NBA All-Star Game MVP, 2-time scoring champion, 12-time All-NBA selection, 10-time defensive selection, and now, entitled as one of the top ten players of all time by the legendary, Michael Jordan. After these many titles one will fall short of words to describe his game, the game of one and only “Black Mamba” (Kobe Bean Bryant). Three-year-old American he was, when for the first time he dribbled the ball. While he was growing up Lakers was his favorite team. The son of former NBA player Joe Bryant, he declared for the 1996 NBA draft after graduation, and was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick, he was a shooting guard. The Hornets then traded him to the Lakers. After the Lakers lost the 2004 NBA Finals, O’Neal was traded, and Bryant became the cornerstone of the Lakers. In 2006, he scored a career-high 81 points; the second most points scored in a single game in league history, behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game in 1962. Bryant is the all-time leading scorer in Lakers franchise history. He gave himself the nickname “Black Mamba” in the mid-2000s, and the epithet became widely adopted by the general public. The New York Times wrote that he had “one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport.” In 2008 and again in 2016, ESPN ranked him the second greatest shooting guard of all time after Jordan. He was also a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s basketball teams at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and 2012 the London Olympic Games. Kobe Bryant also had several brand endorsements with adidas, Coca-Cola, etc. Bryant was also into music; he was a member of a rap group called CHEIZAW in high school. He has also appeared in some of the movies, as he made his acting debut in 1996. In 2018, Bryant became the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and the first former professional athlete to be nominated and to win an Academy Award in any category for his film Dear Basketball. In 2018 Bryant published the book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play, in which he described his approach to basketball. He was 41 years old when he died in the accident along with his 13-year-old daughter. When asked about how he would like to be remembered, Kobe stated “Hopefully, they perceive me as person who did whatever he had to do to win above all else. Above anything. SPORTS Cricket Cricket: The sport for everyone All of us expect a healthy life. It can be achieved by physical and mental wellbeing. Undoubtedly, sport is one of the best ways to achieve physical and mental well-being. It has been proven by medical studies, that the people engaged with sports in their lifestyle show a very greater pace of all-round development. Since my early days, I have been told the importance of sports and how it impacts our personality. This, eventually lead to the development of interest in sports in my mind. I love to play badminton, table tennis but the game of cricket has a special place in my heart. “Cricket is a most precious profession; it’s called a team game but no one is so lonely as a batsman facing bowler supported by ten fieldsmen and observed by two umpires to ensure that his error does not go unpunished,” says John Abbott, the famous writer. Cricket, a game loved by almost 2.5 billion fans all over the world, is the second most popular sport in the world. I belong to those types of cricket fans, who love every form of cricket. From Indian Premier League to The Ashes, Big Bash League to The Champions Trophy, World Cup to Domestic matches, I enjoy every bit of cricket. This game has given recognition to several legends who excelled at the international level and brought glories to their teams. I feel a little unfortunate not to witness the Iconic First World cup win for the Indian team, back in 1983, but I am proud to live the magical moment when the Indian team lifted the World Cup after 28 years, in 2011. The cricket field has witnessed many miracles and it has been a top display of passion, teamwork, and dedication over the years, and I am sure, it will continue to be, for a long time from now. Cricket, this game is now a part of my life. Although it’s not my profession, I feel strongly connected to it as a viewer. I love those days when the only goal was to hit sixes in the streets. I would come back home with a feeling of prime satisfaction after winning a match. We used to start playing with 2-3 players, and right in few minutes, every passer-by would join us. That’s because of the popularity of this game in our country. It’s a sport for everyone. Even today, I dedicate some time to play cricket. Once you put some part of yourself in any sport, it’s difficult to stay away from it for a long time. Last year, 2020, when the world witnessed a blow of a pandemic, it brought everything to a halt, including sports all over the world. Then came the imposition of nation-wide lockdown. That period was weird. I was deserted thinking about how to spend days without sports. Neither I could play, nor I could watch any sport. People started finding out ways to workout at home, but without a field, it was unusual. As time passed, the situation began to be better. After some months, sporting events all over to world began to resume. Then a piece of very exciting news about the IPL 2021 came out. The first-ever edition in which IPL was to be played behind closed doors. For people like me, who were desperately waiting for watching sports, it was a boon. Also, this edition was to be a mood swinger for many people who were upset by all the happenings in the lockdown period. The tournament began and it ended on a high note. As expected, this season of IPL recorded an all-time high response from viewers all over the world. I didn’t miss a single match; although being at home, I enjoyed this festival of cricket to the fullest. Now, the situation since the initial pandemic stage is fairly improved. The world is getting back on track. Sporting events are also pacing up as before. One of the major happenings in the sport will be the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games, which were originally scheduled in 2020, but were postponed due to the pandemic. It will be exciting to see our athletes performing. And of course, the 2021 Cricket T-20 World Cup is also a much-awaited event for the fans. - Rushab Jain 2nd year, Computer Science Engineering 139
ARCEON 21 January winter Around the start of December 2015 I was really looking forward to the winter break, I was all caught on my schoolwork and it seemed I was gonna have a plenty of time to myself this winter break and then I get a notification about U-15 National School Chess Championship being conducted in the city. I love chess. It’s my identity and all of sudden all my plans changed I put all of my efforts for the championship being held next month, although I was nervous of my chances this time but I was determined to give my best. Soon my schedule of sleeping all the way till afternoon changed from this to waking up at sharp 5 in the morning for preparing and practicing. I really wanted to make a mark this time, I was practicing really hard and before I know I was standing in the hotel lobby waiting for rounds to begin. It was a three-day event three rounds each day. I started at the rank of 23rd, slow and steady and by the end, by six wins two draws and two upsets I ended at 6th position with a rating performance of 1650 and increase in FIDE rating of almost 80 points. I was so pumped up that I came so close to actual national championship although I would have preferred 1st rank much rather but this rank 6th is something I hold very dear to myself, especially since it reminds me who I got to meet that day The World Chess Champion ‘Viswanathan Anand’, the guy who inspired me to start playing chess. He is an Idol.
