Page 2 R350 Grant Queuing Nightmare By Zamangwane Khanyile Unemployed citizens queuing for the R350 grant. The R350 grant has become a bittersweet relief to unem- ployed South African citi- zens. There are always a throng of people in queues outside of the post offices. Citizens have been complain- ing about the poor service they get at the facility when they are supposed to collect their grant. It has now become a strain to a lot of people because some are turned away without re- ceiving their grant due to in- competency, poor service, long queues and bribery. People come early to the post offices from 23:00 and camp outside the premises to be early in line the following day. SASSA initially declared that the grant will only be available at post offices, not retail stores due to the coronavirus pandemic. To address grievances, SASSA announced the formation of an appeals process and, in partnership with the South African Post Office (SAPO), intro- duced changes to the Specific Requirements Documents (SRD) payment system. With the entry into Lev- el 2 lockdown, both SASSA and (SAPO) facilities witnessed growing crowds in the streets; wanting to apply, receive, query or appeal the R350 SRD grant. The situation is ongoing. Despite attempts by the SAPO to control the queues using staggered SMS messages, asking beneficiaries to visit their nearest Post Office to receive their grant only when their grant was ready for collection, this appeared not to be work- ing either. The government has extended the social grant relief to December and therefore the congested queues are likely to persist. New Jika Joe Residential Flats By Manqoba Mchunu, Sphesihle Khoza and Kimberley Allenspach Construction is still ongoing for the Community Resi- dential Units in Pietermaritzburg that are to be occupied by the Jika Joe informal settlement residents. The Ga- zette Team visited the construction site to find out more about the project. The Motheo Construction Group, which oversees the project, did not permit the team to speak to them as they allege false reporting by other media companies which is bringing their company into disrepute. In September hundreds of residents had their homes destroyed in a fire that engulfed a significant portion of the settlement. Earlier this year, in March, another fire destroyed two dozen shacks, and displaced hundreds of residents. The new flat development will be a safer and permanent home for many who have had their homes destroyed repeatedly. Picture: Oupa Mokoena African News Shepherd Bushiri and his Agency (ANA) wife Mary Bushiri were ar- rested on 20 October by the Hawks on charges of fraud and money laundering and have remained in police cus- tody since. Their trial has been set for May 31 to June 18, 2021 and their bail hear- ing for the end of this week. Their arrest comes after sev- eral people have alleged that they were robbed of their hard-earned money by the prophet through investment schemes, and he is now re- fusing to release their funds back to them. The couple is also accused of contravening South Africa’s exchange control regulations by allegedly pay- ing an estimated R19 million for a private jet and contravening the Prevention of the Organized Crime Act. The matter is under criminal investigation. According to Home Affairs Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoal- edi, Bushiri and Mary arrived on Visitor’s Visa in 2009. Motsoaledi said upon arrival, Bushiri registered companies and started conducting business. This, Motsoaledi said, was not allowed in terms of a visitor’s visa and immigration law and is a chargeable offence. When Bushiri applied for permanent residency, he made a declaration under oath that he entered the country in 2015 yet our records show that he entered in 2009. During the court proceedings on Friday, 23 October the state revealed that it was in possession of an affidavit from the Department of Home Affairs in which Bushiri and his wife Mary’s status in the country was still unclear. The couple’s permanent residency status in South Africa is being probed by Home Affairs.
