Page 2 Newly appointed DA leader Steenhuisen promises to give power to the people By Nomfundo Nkosi Newly appointed DA leader John Steenhuisen. Photo: Twitter John Steenhuisen won the race to lead the country’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA). In his ac- ceptance speech delivered on Sunday af- ternoon, he said he wanted to take both the DA and South Africa to greater heights and empower every citizen. Around 2000 of the party’s delegates met for a virtual elective conference over the weekend. Helen Zille was also re-elected as the party’s Federal Council Chairper- son. Steenhuisen finally has his long- awaited mandate and wants to use it to set the DA back on course and to bring more South Africans into the blue party. He also told delegates that there was a period where the DA failed to provide clear so- lutions for some of the country’s prob- lems and hesitated in being a dependable ally for the people. Steenhuisen said, “For a while we’ve lost sight of who we were and what we offer – clear principal and decisive leadership.” He also said that this did not have to be a fatal error as the party could learn from its mistakes. Steenhuisen said that South Africans want assistance from a caring and effective govern- ment, not handouts from the failing state. While warning that South Africa was in trouble, he said that the DA could be the country’s answer. There were no fatalities or serious injuries reported. The building structure remained intact. The large blocks of moulding had crashed on the nightclub’s floor, sending panicked customers fleeing. Some were trapped under the ceiling rubble, and oth- ers tried to rescue those under the debris. Several people needed medical treatment. According to the management of the estab- lishment, preliminary reports suggest that the heavy rain contributed to the incident. They are still assessing the extent of dam- age caused. Award winning DJ and musi- cian, Prince Kaybee was performing at the time and witnessed the collapse. The nightclub has a capacity of 2800 people. While it was not full at the time, the structure could not hold more than 1000 who were present at the time. The club has three floors, a stage performance area, a floating DJ box, and an aqua bar.
