In marking the birth of Nada PETRONAS the late Tan SriAbdul Kadir Shamsuddin, the then Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS, had expressed the hope that the newsletter \"would not only report activities within the group but also propagate certain values such as mutual respect, liarmony and esprit de corps amongst staff\". The newsletter was published on a 'loint issue' basis for the first few years. By 1980, joint-issues became a rare feature. The last joint-issue was the June - July 1983 issue, some six years ago. Meanwhile, changes were effected to produce better layout for the newsletter. L2

As the corporation's activities grew more complex and varied, a wider scope of happenings had to be covered to fulfill Nada's responsibility o{ keeping its readers well informed. However, with more cor- porate activities vying for space in Nada, less items on staff activities could find their way into the newsletter. At the same time, there is an urgent need for the corporation to give a wider and intensive coverage of staff activities to propagate esprit de corps amongst the 7,000 staff, and also as a means of giving due recognition for their achievements. Increasing the number of pages in Nada is no answer to the problem. Nada which has assumed the role of a corporate flag bearer is no longer an appropriate outlet for staff news. This is because one-third of its 13,000 recipients are \"outsiders\", and there- fore, would have less interest in such news. In March 1988, NadaPETRONAS saw the birth of its sister publication Senada a bi-lingual monthly tailored specially for staff. Senada, has thus become another channel of communication between staff and management. - By Yunos Mohd Salleh 13

As our business developed, we began to recognise that certain problems could only be resolved through local R & D. It was therefore decided that we should examine the need for R & D and a task force was set up in 1986 to look into the matter. Last year, we launched the PRI. Nada Now that the PRI has been established, what do you see as its immediate task and future role? Tan Sri Azizan The first task of the PRI will be the inculcation and fostering of R & D culture in the institute. The development of the staff who would be able to fulfill the functions of the PRI will be its other main task. The PRI has also to develop iinkages with other research organisations locally and abroad to keep itself informed of the research that have been and are being carried out elsewhere. We don't want to invent the wheel. These linkages would also provide the opportunity for collaboratron. The activities of PRI will pnmanly be directed at supponing the development of PETRONAS busrness and the Malaysian petroleum industry.
