The Union Territories Of India A union territory is an administrative division in the Republic of India. This status is given for reasons such as safe guarding indigenous culture or avoid- ing political turmoil. UT’s enjoy special rights and status and they are ruled directly by the Central Government also known as the Union Government hence they are called Union territories. There are seven union territories in the country now. Andaman and Nicobar were the UTs at the time of adopting the Constitution. Delhi, Chandigarh and Lakshadweep were formed by separating them from former states. Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Puducherry are acquired territories which were made UTs.
