Preface India is a vast and diverse country. It is home to thousands of plants and trees. It is also home to a numerous varieties of birds and animals. From snow clad mountain ranges to breath taking green hills, from the beautiful white sandy deserts to clear blue waters oceans, from the dense forests to ancient rivers, from heritage monuments to architectural marvel; India has many places to see, each one very different from the other. And even every state’s food habits and diet changes because of their natural and geographical conditions. “My Colourful India” aims at expanding the reader’s understanding and knowledge of our incredible country. The content is simple yet comprehensive and engaging to help the reader learn about the various states. The book is colourful and largely pictorial to make it interesting for the reader. It is important to remember that each and every state is equal to the other and each state holds the same level of importance and value as its neighbours. For the sake of structure and ease of understanding, we have placed the states alphabetically in this series. “Publisher” 3

Andhra Pradesh ? Did You Know Andhra Pradesh is covered in forest Andhra Pradesh has vast area to a large extent. GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE: Andhra Pradesh has a vast area that covers not only the Eastern Ghats and Nallamala Hills but also goes to the shores of the Bay of Bengal. It has two main rivers, Krishna and Godavari. As a result, the climate in the state also varies based on the forested hilly areas and the coastal areas, which receive tropical rains. PLACES TO SEE STATE SYMBOL There are many beautiful places to see in Andhra Pradesh. WHAT DO THEY EAT? Rice is the staple eaten in the state and people like to eat spicy food.Don’t forget to try the yummy Tamarind rice known as Pulihora and the well known Hyderabadi Biryani eaten with Mirchi ka Salan. Mirchi bajji is a popular snack in Andhra and Gongur pachdi, a chutney is well loved by the people. Mango is grown extensively in Andhra. Arunachal Pradesh ? Arunachal Pradesh is popular for being an area rich in plant, Did You animal and bird life. Know Due to the Eastern Himalayan province spread almost throughout the land, a variety of trees including oak, pine, Arunachal maple, fir, sal and teak are found in the vast forests. The climate varies from being cold and alpine in the higher regions, and more humid and subtropical in the lower areas. They like a generous helping of chilly in everything like Lukter which is smoked beef sprinkled with chilli flakes, Pika Pila which is a spicy pickle. While the Buddhist tribes specialize in making masks, silverware and painted wooden vessels, the Monpa tribe is known for its beautiful carpet weaves. WHAT DO THEY EAT? Assamese eat a lot of rice and non vegetarian food. Khaar is a meat delicacy and Masor Tenga is a popular fish curry. Duck meat is also well liked. The Mauryan Stupas that were discovered in the region date as far back as 300 BC to 100 AD. Muthia, steamed dumplings made of Rice batter and Bhajjia (Fritters) are favourite as snacks. Aamat, a mixed veg curry and Bara, fermented lentil vada are a must try. Farra, sweet made with rice batter is a popular dessert. Haryanvis are a strong and affable people who lay a lot of emphasis on milk and milk products with Lassi, butter and Ghee as a part of their daily food. Cereals like Bajra and Wheat are eaten. Jammu & Kashmir ?Did You Know J&K accounts for more than 3,000 species of Jammu and Kashmir is the northern most trees & plants state of India and home to breathtaking natural beauty and splendor. GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE: Often known as J&K, Jammu & Kashmir is home to many valleys that are divided by the Himalayas. Most of the state is situated in the Himalayan mountains and consists of three main regions, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Jhelum River is the only major Himalayan River flowing through the Kashmir Valley. WHAT DO THEY EAT? The cuisine of Kashmir region and that of Ladakh differ immensely. The popular Kashmiri dishes are Roganjosh( Meat cooked in yoghurt), Goshtaba, Nadru( Lotus stems), Rajma. They abound in fruits and dry fruit and of course the rare and expensive Saffron. The Ladakhi cuisine favours soup style cooking with Momos, Thupka, thick noodle based soup, Skyu,bits of wheat flour cooked in water), Khambir which is a bread with a thick crust and of course Butter tea, a salty fare with butter which accompanies all meals. PLACES TO SEE This state is rightly known as” Heaven on Earth” and the Dal lake, Shalimar and Nishat Gardens and Gulmarg are a proof of that. The Ladakh region has it’s own arid beauty and the Tso moriri and Pangong Tso lakes, are the jewels in it’s crown and the Nubra valley with it’s two humped camel are a real treat to visit. Karnataka ? Karnataka is a state in the southwestern part Did You of India. GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE: Karnataka is divided into three types of areas, the coastal area, and the hilly region with the Western Ghats and the plains with the Deccan plateau. It has two main rivers flowing through these regions. And because of its geographical divisions it has four seasons, namely winter, summer, monsoon and post mosoon. WHAT DO THEY EAT? Karnataka offers a vareity of food raging from Kosambari, a popular salad, Kori gassi, chicken made with coconut and tamarind, Coorg Pandi curry ( Pork curry) to Bisi bele bhat (Rice and lentil dish) and the Mysore masala Dosa.
