THE REGENCY AUCTION 44 APRIL 21st • THE BELLAGIO • LAS VEGAS

THE REGENCY AUCTION 44 APRIL 21st • THE BELLAGIO • LAS VEGAS Welcome friends! In the pages that follow, you will see one of the coolest selections of coins to appear in a Regency Auction! While not at its original venue, the Regency Auction 44 will offer something for everyone, especially if you collect half dollars! The market is very strong right now, and the consignments came flooding in, resulting in the offerings you are about to see. Starting off the auction is the Boylston Collection of Seated Liberty half dollars. Assembled over the course of many years, the extensive offering of 145 pieces includes many Choice and Gem grade pieces, including coins pedigreed to Newman, Pittman, Eliasberg, Richmond, and other important collections of ages past. Half dollars from other consignors folloW the Boylston Collection, and the selection, from the earliest issues (1795 PCGS AU58 CAC) to the most recent (1964 SMS PCGS SP67+), is extensive and full of great pieces! Gem quality rarities and pop top examples are happily presented for the astute collector. Concluding the half dollar section is the Gerald R. Forsythe Collection of Walking Liberty Half Dollars, the all time greatest set of Walkers on the PCGS Registry. It was Mr. Forsythe’s decades of searching out the finest pieces that produced this set, and it is his desire that the set be sold intact, as a single lot. Just think, one bid, and you are automatically vaulted to the #1 spot on the PCGS Registry. From there, type coins from large cents to dollars continue to show impeccable quality. Many impressive rarities have been consigned, including Gem grade pieces, condition rarities, and popular collector issues. Starting off the gold selection is the Forsythe Collection of Proof Indian Head Eagles. This is the former Far East Collection, assembled exclusively by our sister firm, Legend Numismatics, and is another #1 all time PCGS Registry Set. Overall, the quality in this catalog just oozes off each and every page. When the final lot closes, we expect many new record prices to be set, and to congratulate many happy buyers and sellers for these amazing coins. Happy Hunting, Julie Abrams President

Keep in mind that a coin could be either low or high end for the grade, have stunning color or be dull, all of which radically affect a coin’s value. Yes, there can be huge price differences within a grade, and we offer estimates as a guide so Collector’s can have a better idea of value. One thing we will never do is offer low ball estimates in order to claim stronger sales. These published estimates represent what Legend Rare Coin Auctions determines to be an approximate high wholesale value for the coin. The numbers are based upon current market values, similar trades, auction prices, published prices, and a consideration of the coin’s quality. There is no guarantee that the estimated prices are minimums or are exactly what you can expect to get if you attempt to resell them wholesale. We always advise you to view the coins you are interested in and calculate what you’ll pay using as much information as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask us. We are here to help you!

PRINCIPALS Laura was raised in Highland Park, NJ. During high school, the coin bug hit her hard. Her trip to the 1976 NYC ANA left a lasting mark and huge desire for her to own and handle the greatest rarities. While attending Monmouth University, Laura attended coin shows more than classes. After college, she started LSS RCI, a wholesale coin company. In 1986, she realized the need for a “better” coin retailer and teamed up in 1986 with George Huang to form Legend Numismatics. In 1996 Bruce Morelan became a partner and since then Legend has exclusively built or assisted in assembling this generation’s greatest collections. In 2012 Laura saw the need for a smaller, boutique auction firm, and created Legend-Morphy with Dan Morphy, whom she split with in 2014. Today, Laura is also a leading consumer advocate for coins. The passion has never subsided, and she keeps a beautiful Proof Walker on her desk to this day. Laura Sperber Partner Bruce started collecting coins when he was only six years old and by the time he was in high school his dream was to be a coin dealer. But life intervened and instead, Bruce went into business. By chance, he became Legend Numismatics’ financial backer in 1996. His great grandmother had given him three coins when he was young, one of which being a Trade Dollar, so he set out to build the finest Trade Dollar set. After a few years with ultra rarities, Bruce returned to his love of dollars and completed both a set of Gobrechts and a set of Seated Dollars. After selling those sets, Bruce recently returned to dollars with a new Gobrecht set and a spectacular early dollar set capped by his dream coin, the Amon Carter 1794 Dollar. Not many collector’s can say they have completed not only the finest 1794-1885 Dollar Sets and have over the years owned such coins as two 1913 Liberty Head Nickels, an 1894-S Dime, 1876-CC Twenty Cent piece, 1827 Original and Restrike Quarters, 1838-O Half Dollar, two 1885 Trade Dollars and four 1884 Trade Dollars! Legend Rare Coin Auctions in conjunction with Elizabeth led him to purchase as many duplicate dates and grades as Coggan Numismatics is pleased to present, unreserved to possible. He had a deep appreciation for the design traits you, the sale of the Boylston Collection of Seated Liberty of Miss Liberty set against frosty white surfaces or black Half Dollars. Featured is an array of Mint State and Proof and white cameo contrasted fields. One of the inadvertent pieces meticulously assembled over the past 25 years with results of collecting so many high grade white pieces, tucked an emphasis on WHITE coins. Where white coins were not away over the past two and a half decades, is the creation of attainable for certain dates, the collector purchased high demand and price appreciation for those very same coins. grade, toned examples, in an effort to have as complete Collector demand, coupled with the influx of fresh coins to the a date/mintmark collection as possible. LOT 1 50C 1839 DRAPERY. PCGS MS63 POPULAR FIRST YEAR ISSUE. A desirable and highly sought by date and type collectors. Far above average strike detail for the issue--with crisp hair strand delineation on Liberty’s head and full breast feathers on the eagle. Under strong magnification there are a couple of light breaks in luster and a few random contact marks, but all are commensurate with the grade. Blazing white and cartwheel luster. Two major varieties of 1839 dated halves were coined. The first was Without Drapery at the elbow and they were minted only in 1839 and are considered quite scarce. The other was With Drapery at the elbow (such as this coin) and they were coined from 1839 through 1852. Although a more common example, they are still difficult to come by in higher mint state grades. PCGS 12, NGC 15. A mere 44 coins grade finer. Listed in the PCGS Price Guide for $2,600. The last example to trade at auction was in October 2016 and it fetched $2,233. With the demand for white Seated halves as strong as it is, we anticipate this high end piece will command a handsome price! PCGS# 6232 | EST: $2,000+ LOT 2 50C 1840 REVERSE OF 1839. PCGS MS65  TIED FOR THIRD FINEST GRADED! Booming mint bloom is accentuated by lovely toning intermingled in shades of soft gray, rose and ice blue. A couple of light ticks are noted on the left shoulder of Miss Liberty and one on her chin under strong magnification. WB-10 Doubled Date. Rarity-3. Clearly seen with the naked eye are the undertypes of the 18. Also doubled are the 4 on crossbar and the 0 is repunched south. Struck with the Small Letters reverse from 1839. PCGS 8, NGC 2. Just 6 coins grade finer 5 are PCGS MS-66 and one grades PCGS MS-66+. PCGS Price Guide is $8,500. This exact piece last sold at auction in January 2015 (a weaker market) where it fetched $8,813. An outstanding opportunity for both the date and variety specialist. So few GEM pieces remain, that we expect a dogfight when this coin comes up for sale! Good luck! PCGS# 6234 | EST: $6,000+ 9

LOT 3 50C 1840-(O). REVERSE OF 1838. PCGS MS64 CAC A DREAM coin for the student of numismatics. Blast white with just a trace of champagne gold to lend originality to the coin. Intense mint frost accents precision point design details. Save for a tiny contact mark in the right obverse field, this coin is exhibiting gem-like surfaces (no guarantees, merely an observation). Struck from a heavily rusted obverse die as is evidenced by the rash of tiny pimples on Liberty’s neck, chest and forearm. Rusty dies were highly uncommon at the Philadelphia Mint at the time, although quite common in New Orleans. Medium Letters, Reverse of 1838. WB-101. Known as one of fabled missing mintmark varieties coined at the New Orleans Mint. Although Seated halves were coined in 1839, it was not the Seated half dollar design that was incorporated in the production of this issue, but, rather, the Capped Bust half dollar reverse. Remarkably, no one noticed the omission of the mintmark until 1980! The carry over reverse die was on it’s last leg and it is quite remarkable that it survived the striking of the Seated halves. Evidence of the deterioration of the die is noted in the myriad of radial die cracks from various border points around the legend to the center of the coin. A splendid condition rarity and a prized piece that harkens back to the fabled Harlan P. Smith, S.H. and Henry Chapman, May 1906, John H. Clapp, 1942 and Louis Eliasberg, Sr. 1996 Collections. PCGS 2, NGC 8, CAC 2. Just 17 coins grade finer, and we wonder how many really stack up quality-wise to this beauty! PCGS Price Guide is $15,000. This exact piece last sold at auction in January 2018 for $10,800. That certainly seems like a bargain price based on the pedigree and outstanding quality of the coin. Destined for a top flight collection. We expect all out war on this GEM. Bid liberally or go home empty handed! PCGS# 6233 | EST: $10,000+ LOT 4 50C 1840-O PCGS MS63+ CAC SUPERB ORIGINALITY and aesthetic appeal. A coin that will appeal to the purist. The surfaces are booming with original mint bloom and frost and are kissed with honey gold toning highlights. Just one or two teensy contact marks are noted under magnification. Extremely well struck for a New Orleans Mint issue and for this variety in particular, as it generally comes with weakness at Liberty’s mid section, but this piece is a pleasant exception. WB-11 with a Large O mintmark. A large reverse die cracks starts at the rim and travels through the L in dollar to the eagle’s right leg. Another crack begins at the rim and continues along the right side of D in UNITED, through the wing and to the base of the shield. PCGS 7, NGC 5, CAC 3. Just 2 pieces carry the coveted + designation for the grade. Only 9 total pieces grade finer with the nicest a PCGS MS-66. PCGS Price Guide is $5,500. This coin sold back in November 2010 for $4,945. A prized piece for the connoisseur. With the price spread jumping to $10,000 in MS-64 and the potential upside in condition of this fabulous piece, we expect strong bidding activity. She’s worth the splurge! PCGS# 6235 | EST: $5,000+ 10

LOT 5 50C 1842 MEDIUM DATE. PCGS MS65 TIED FOR SECOND FINEST GRADED! Creamy white surfaces look like satin sheets and bounce with life from the blazing luster rolling over them. A glorious GEM with incredibly choice surfaces. Just a couple of tiny flea bites in the right obverse field are noted under magnification. Outstanding strike. WB-12. Medium date, Triple Punched Date with the digits repunched north 3 times! Rarity-3. A plethora of die cracks are present on both the obverse and reverse and several parallel die lines are noted beneath the date and above Liberty’s head. PCGS 3, NGC 3. Just two coins grade finer and both are MS-66. One PCGS and one NGC. PCGS Price Guide lists the date at $7,500. Everything that has sold at auction has been heavily toned. The last PCGS coin traded for $5,640 in January 2017. We challenge you to find another WHITE GEM that has sold in the past decade! You won’t, as they are rarer than the proverbial hen’s tooth! Destined for a top Registry Collection. Sure to elicit a flurry of bidding activity! Don’t miss out. PCGS# 6239 | EST: $5,500+ LOT 6 50C 1842-O SMALL DATE. NGC MS61 A CLASSIC RARITY. Remarkably well struck for the variety. Most extant specimens are weak on the left lower portion of the eagle’s body (as made). This coin is fully struck throughout! This piece has a ton of luster for the grade that is not subdued in spite of the pretty apricot toning blanketing the obverse and reverse. WB-2 Rarity-5. Large O mintmark. One of just two die pairs used to strike this rare Small Date, Small Letters issue. This variety represents the second and final use of the obverse die and the only use of the reverse die in 1842. PCGS 1, NGC 0. A scant mintage of 203,000 coins made this issue a destined rarity from the day it was coined. PCGS Price Guide is $21,500. Just two other mint state specimens are known, both are MS-62 and graded by PCGS. One is the former Gardner Collection piece and the other is from the Louis Eliasberg, Sr Collection. The last time this piece appeared at auction was in 2016 (a much weaker market) where it sold in March for $11,750. Deserving of a world class collection. Bid like this is your last opportunity to own this date in Mint State for a long time to come, it likely is! PCGS# 6238 | EST: $12,000+ 11

LOT 7 50C 1842-O MED. DATE. REV. OF 1842. PCGS MS64+ CAC SOLE FINEST GRADED FOR THE VARIETY. This coin screams original, GEM! Rolling frosty cartwheel luster bounces off the surfaces and accentuates fully defined design elements. Toned in a wash of peach and gold toning over silvery gray fields. A couple of toning spots are noted for accuracy. One on Liberty’s head (a distinguishing feature, making this coin easy to trace) as well as a small one in the right obverse field. Thankfully no one has dipped off the color and so it remains as pristine as the day it was coined! Many mint state examples of New Orleans Mint Seated halves remain, as there was little numismatic interest in them at the time they were coined.
