LOT 123 5C 1914/3 PCGS MS65 CAC One of the more controversial issues of the 20th century, there has been much debate and research that has been done on this “overdate” issue. Since its discovery it has been collected as part of the Buffalo nickel series as an overdate similar to the 18/7-D, the current thought is that a 1913 master die was repunched by a 1914 dated hub, which then went on to create several working dies, each with vestiges of the 3 visible to some degree under the 4. PCGS now encapsulates these as 4/(3), and will only do so with certain dies. With a glass you can see parts of the top of a three under the 4, however the doubling of the date that PCGS CoinFacts uses to show the traits of one of the dies is absent. The current GEM is FS-101, one of the dies that PCGS recognizes. The coin itself is a lustrous gem, possessing great eye appeal partially imparted by the soft pink-gold and periwinkle iridescent hues. Well struck and free of any distracting marks, this buffalo will certainly be welcome in any herd. PCGS 2, NGC 3, CAC 2. The last one to sell realized $32,200 in a February 2013 auction. This coin is ex Joseph C. Thomas and realized $18,400 back in April 2009 and at the time was not CAC. PCGS CoinFacts still lists a $27,000 value. We are not going to weigh in on the ongoing debate as to whether this variety should be included in advanced Buffalo nickel sets, other than say that it has traditionally been collected as part of the series. If you would like to own a GEM example, here is your chance. PCGS # 93924 | EST: $20,000+72

LOT 144 5C 1913 TYPE 2 PCGS PR68 CAC Monumental quality for this early Proof Buffalo and toned with a perfect combination of nickel blue to the centers and framed in varying shades of gold, yellow and crimson on both sides! A more appealing example could not possibly exist, and this splendid coin was chosen to represent this date on the CoinFacts website. The strike is bold throughout, as expected for a Proof, and this is the second style issued in 1913, with the straight and level ground. Only 1,514 pieces were struck and this stellar example is tied with the absolute finest known today. The original design was altered slightly after Mint officials realized the Type 1 with raised ground allowed the letters FIVE CENTS to wear down quickly, and vending machine owners believed the original design may be deemed a counterfeit by their machines. Thus as has been the case of several newly designed coins, changes quickly came about to appease various groups. The Buffalo Nickel design was created by James Earle Fraser, an artist from outside the Philadelphia Mint. Fraser took images of three aging chiefs and developed a composite portrait. The chiefs used were Iron Tail (Custer’s opponent at Little Bighorn), Two Moons, and John Big Tree. The desired result was a Native American that could not be attributed to any one tribe. For the reverse Fraser used an American bison named Black Diamond, then living at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. PCGS 7, NGC 6, CAC 7. A non-CAC PCGS piece sold for $46,000.00 04/2009. PCGS MS68 Wow, this SUPERB GEM is incredible. How did a dime, struck during a period of American history that was rife with economic and socio-political ups and downs survive in such an astonishing grade? Whether it was intentional or by pure happenstance, the numismatic community is lucky to be able to enjoy this virtually perfect coin. Essentially as struck, the luster is vibrant and frosty withmuch satin bloom. Save for a touch of golden accents, this coin is as silvery as it was at the second it came off the die. Well struck, all of the details are boldly embossed into the planchet. Using a strong glass, all we see are some planchet lines and die clash marks, which are both products of manufacture and do not affect the grade. Because of the massive amounts of gold pouring out of the California gold fields, the proportion of gold/siver in commerce became unbalanced and the price of silver, relative to gold increased to the point where the content of silver coins was worth more than their stated values. Before this change went into effect, only 95,000 dimes were struck using the No Arrows dies. PCGS 4, NGC 5. This is the James Lull Collection coin, which sold in January 2005 for $16,675. LOT 165 10C 1854-O ARROWS. PCGS MS65 CAC EX ELIASBERG A RARE gem grade example of this popular issue, pedigreed to the arguably the greatest collection of coins ever built, that of Baltimore banker Louis Eliasberg. Frosty mint brilliance shines under a pearly-gold-olive-tan toning. The strike is bold throughout. PCGS 8, NGC 10, CAC 1. There are only two coins graded finer at PCGS, a 66 and a 66+. This is the only MS65 example approved by CAC. This gem sold in an August 2013 auction for $7,637, attesting to the superb quality. Since it may be a long time until the MS66 comes up for sale, this is likely the finest to appear on the market for a while. We think that now is a great time to put great coins like this away in a type set, or if you are feeling ambitious and would like to challenge yourself to building a set of Seated Dimes, this might well be a great example to start off with.
