LOT 274 149 $5 1834 CLASSIC, PLAIN 4. PCGS MS64 CAC A glorious essentially GEM Classic Head $5! What a rare delight to be able to offer a stone bold original example of thistype that usually does not come with any sort of eye appeal or inhigh grade. This coin has both! Brilliant golden orange coloration is enlivened by a bold original mint bloom. The devices are verywell struck, showing full definition in Ms. Liberty’s hairlines andin the details of the eagle’s wing feathers. Aside from a stray lineor two that you do need a strong loupe to see, there is nothing to mar the surfaces or distract the eye.The Classic Head series is a transitional type. The old tenor types (struck prior to 1834) by this point contained more value in precious metal than was stamped on the coin leading many of these coins to be be exported and melted for the specie. An act of Congress, passed in 1834 changed that--reducing the weight to prevent the export. It was a short series, lasting only until1839 when Christian Gobrecht’s Coronet or Liberty Head series was introduced. It is a completable set, no one date is extremely rare (although some are condition rarities), and with patiencecan be completed--the challenge is to find coins that match this near-GEM’s stunning originality and high end eye appeal. PCGS 36, NGC 43, CAC 12. These do not appear in auction with any frequency; prior to this one selling, the last PCGS MS64 CAC to sell in auction was back in October 2011, where one sold for $25,300. Even without CAC approval, the last PCGS coin sold in April 2013 for $21,150. Only 10 coins aregraded finer, and in MS65 and MS66, these are valued close to orover $100,000. This gorgeous MS64 presents any collector a great value! Good luck! PCGS# 8171 | EST: $25,000+ LEGENDAUCTIONS.COM

LOT 275 $5 1836 NGC MS65 An exceptional GEM Classic Head $5, and a coin that is among the FINEST graded not just for the date, but the type! A very eye appealing example of William Kneass’s short lived design. A bold cartwheel luster rolls over satiny textured fields and razor sharp struck devices. Close inspection does reveal a few tiny breaks in the frost and minor contact, but you do need a loupe to see these. By the time this coin was struck, the obverse die had shattered, with a bisecting crack that comes up from the lower obverse rim between the 8 and 3 and intersects another from the rim at star 3 that goes across the nose to the hair curls above the eye, crossing the E in LIBERTY and extending to the rim at 1:00. PCGS 2, NGC 1. For the TYPE, NGC has graded 10 coins as MS65, with a mere 4 finer. The most recent NGC MS65 of ANY date to sell (keep in mind this coin has never sold in any auction) was a much more common 1834 (pop 7) in March 2013, where it realized $44,000. A non-CAC PCGS graded coin sold in April 2015 for $67,563. A great coin for a GEM gold type set or for an advanced collection of this often overlooked “transitional” series. LOT 344 179 $20 (1859) J-A1859-10 DIE TRIAL. PCGS MS64Presented here is an essentially UNIQUE die trial of an undated(1859) double eagle obverse die, struck in a white metal planchetwithout a collar. Remnants of the original paper backing remains on the otherwise blank reverse. Very pleasing, remarkably well preserved for such a thin piece of soft metal. There are no stray scuffs or serious marks or even anylines that can be seen. Well struck with all details nicely embossed. PCGS 1, NGC 0. This coin is absolutely UNIQUE in private hands! The Judd Plate coin, this coin’s provenance is: ex Empire Coin Co Mail Bid Sale #1, November 1958, lot 103; Stack’s sale of the Herbert Oeschner Collection, September 1988, lot246; Superior’s Session of Auction’89, lot 943; Boyd E. Hayward Collection (Bowers and Merena), September 1997, lot 1553;Stack’s Bowers 2014 ANA Auction, lot 12393; and most recently2016 FUN auction, lot 6322, where it sold for $19,975. The othertwo examples known to exist are both impounded in the LibraryCompany of Philadelphia, and will not be on the market anytime soon. This is a very important opportunity for the advancedpattern collector who collects the more esoteric items listed in the Judd Appendix. PCGS# 529428 | EST: $18,000+ LEGENDAUCTIONS.COM

LOT 345 $1 1836 J-65. RESTRIKE PCGS PR64+ CAC Likely struck in the 1850s, the J-65 features Christian Gobrecht’s Seated Liberty figure without stars with C.Gobrecht F. on thestone base. The flying eagle reverse is without stars and the eagle flies even. Struck in Die Alignment III on a Silver planchet with a plain edge. The J-65 is Extremely Rare, rated a full R-8 with five known in all grades. The presently offered GEM has a great, totally original look. Sold in the March 2017 sale of the Blue Moon Collection, it was described as:“Magnificent and multicolored, this example ranks among the finest survivors of this rare variety. It combines extraordinary quality with extraordinary rarity. A sunset prism of color surrounds the obverse device, contrasting with mottled deeper gray and pale lilacon the reflective fields. The reverse is a subtler and more even blend of pastel violet and gold. Both sides are very sharply struck and exhibit excellent visual appeal. A long but densely curled lintmark gathers between Liberty’s knee and bent elbow, only the most notable of several significant lintmarks scattered over the obverse. The present hairlines are minor, and no major marks are seen. A substantial area of raised die rust is noted in front of Liberty’s face. This example also shows a very crisp low spot, caused by astruck-through remnant on the die, below the right side of F of OF. The DTS die state nomenclature has been pegged to this exact specimen, identifying this coin as the definitive Die State A with strong low spot. Later strikes show this depression diminished. The starless reverse employed on this reverse was first used in 1838; this variety was not coined until 1869 at the earliest and perhaps not until the early 1870s. Research by Saul Teichman has traced only five examples, one of which is impounded in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. The only finer specimen is currently in the Simpson Collection. This one has not been sold in nearly 25 years.” All we can add is a this coin really is a mega WOW! The Simpson coin is beautiful-but this coin has far more color and flash! Its provenance is wonderful as well having been part of the famed Reed Hawn Collection (sold October 1993) and Blue Moon. In the Hawn catalog, they note “Very rare: we have records of only three specimens: 1952 ANA, Stack’s October 1967, and theGarrett coin.” The Garrett coin latere appered in the L.K Rudolph Collection, bought by Dr. Julius Korein (the example now in theANS). The 1952 ANA coin is now the coin in the Simpson Collection. A PR65 sold in Goldberg’s June 2004 sale, said to be off themarket since the 1920s and is also now impounded in the Simpson Collection. A patch of color around the date helps plate match this to the Stack’s October 1967 Charles Jay sale, where it sold as lot 172. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. We can NOT stress enough how rare this coin is. With the Simpson PR 65 locked up probably forever, this is the finest example that ever will be offered. The ONLY reason it is for sale-our partner Bruce Morelan was going to buy it and his interest got derailed by a little 1804 $1! We just can’t put this wonder GEM away! The last line in the October 1967 description is as valid today as it was fifty years ago, and a fitting quote here: “Of EXTREME RARITY and should attract considerable bidding” PCGS# 11249 | EST: $140,000+LEGENDAUCTIONS.COM 181

LOT 347 $10 1863 J-350. PCGS PR63 BN Rated R-6- with about 21-30 examples known. The obverse is the regular Liberty Head design then in use, paired with a similar reverse with a ribbon inscribed GOD OUR TRUST above the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. LOT 346 Dusty olive and lilac patina graces both sides more so on the obverse than reverse (which shows some areas that do not G$1 1836 J-70. PCGS PR65 BN CAC This is a R-7 (4-12 minted) and is struck in copper. What a neat have any patina). The uspatterns.com website notes that these design that could have been. This coin is SUPERB in every respect! are usually gilt or bronzed, and we feel the coloration is from unevenness in the bronzing finish. Well struck on both sides. Deep mirrors are surprisingly clean, crystal clear, beam from all George Eckfelt noted in his journal on November 17, 1863, over, and are highly reflective (unusual for any copper). When you that “Struck 20 sets of copper 10 dollar pieces’God is our trust.’” twirl the coin, the mirrors look like a freshly made perfect sheet That refers to both variants, J-350 and J-352 (which has GOD of glass. Both sides have deep original shades of brown/violet/ OUR TRUST in the field without a ribbon. purple/gold that swirl all over. Every detail is needle sharp in PCGS 5, NGC 3. NGC’s Census includes 1 in Bronzed Copper strike. The eye appeal is fantastic! and 2 in Gilt Copper. The most recent PCGS coin last sold in a July 2008 auction, where it brought $4,715. Today the market is a little different than it was back then--even still this is a very scarce pattern for a gold coin and the gold impression is UNIQUE and impounded in Bob Simpson’s collection. PCGS# 60512 | EST: $3,000+ PCSG 1, NGc 1, CAC 1. It is critical to note, that there is only one higher-the PR66 Simpson coin. There is no pricing published for this coin. The NGC coin is not CAC and is very dull. This is really the ONLY acceptable GEM you will be able to buy for a J-70. Our sister company Legend has handled more GEM Patterns then any dealer ever, tell us this date is by far harder to find than the ones struck in gold. Usually it is the other way around. We can’t stress enough what a tremendous opportunity this coin offers. PCGS# 11269 | EST: $9,000+182

LOT 348 183 $1 1871 J-1146. PCGS PR64 CAM CAC Ex Harry Bass Collection.James Longacre’s Indian Princess seated with globe, flag, holding a pole mounted with Liberty Cap is struck in seemingly high relief, paired with the reverse of regular issued proof dollars. Struck in silver with a plain edge, this pattern is listed as R-7- with 7-12 thought known. This is one of two coins PCGS has graded in CAMEO, the only other is the slightly finer PR64+ in the Simpson Collection. Spectacular deep mirrors really explode from all over. They have remarkable clarity, cleanliness, and are loaded with flash. There are more lines on the holder of this coin then on the coin! Themirrors are better than most we’ve seen on regular Seated Dollar Proofs. A wicked cool looking outline of totally original reddish gold frames all the devices. Miss Liberty and every detail almost look like they were sculpted and are 3-D in appearance. The eye appeal is phenomenal! Harry Bass purchased this coin from Kagin’s “Sale of the 70’s”, November 1973, lot 1351. It was then offered in Bowers & Merena’s May 1999 offering of the Harry Bass Collection, lot 1262. Since then it has appeared several times, in the original PCGS holder from the Bass sale, which did not designate it a CAMEO.PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 1. The other one is the PR64+ mentioned above that is in the Simpson Collection. This coin has a bold visual appeal and provenance that is hard to improve upon! Wedo love the look of this coin and it is going to find itself in a great collection of patterns or silver dollars. There is just so much to love about this one! LOT 349 25C 1870 J-916. PCGS PR67 CAM CAC EX SIMPSON R-7+ 4-6 Minted. Stuck in aluminum with a reeded edge. What an amazing SUPERB GEM! Clearly the FINEST extant example of this VERY RARE Judd number! Deep and watery like mirrors beam from all over. The mirrors have no oxidation. There is a small area of roughness in planchet in the obverse right field (mint made). Miss Liberty and the details are sharply struck and have thick frost. The eye appeal is excellent! PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. This is the FINEST J-916 known. In fact, overall in ANY Aluminum Pattern design there are very few PR67’s. There is a $10,000 Collector’s Universe Value, but of course, NONE have ever sold in auction. Mr. Simpson paid $15,000 for this coin in 2008 mega Pattern deal. Opportunity knock loud here!
