A razor sharp strike brings all the details of Ms. Liberty’s face, hair, drapery, and all of the other intricate devices are fully defined. While common in most grades thanks to a generous mintage of over 15 million, in ultra high grade like this, the number of survivors are in the in the single digits. The Arrows and Rays type came about under the terms of the 1853 Coinage Act, which reduced the weights of silver coins. This was in response to the wholesale export and melting as the silver content was worth more than face. To make these new standard coins differentiated from earlier issues, arrows were placed next to the date, and a burst of rays above the eagle. Due to striking issues, the rays were removed in 1854. PCGS 5, NGS 3, CAC 2. The most recent PCGS/CAC coin to sell in auction realized $138,000 in the January 2011 FUN auction. The current Collector’s Universe price is $135,000 and since there has not been an opportunity tobuy one in this grade at auction in quite some time, it would not be unrealistic if this coin surpassed that level. Good luck! PCGS # 6060 | EST: $110,000+LEGENDAUCTIONS.COM 99
LOT 188 50C 1803 LARGE 3. O-101. PCGS MS63 CAC EX POGUE Among the finest Large 3 1803 half dollars extant, a coin that is extremely rare in mint state. A bold luster shines at the peripheral details. Both sides display a blend of blues and orange-golden hues that are brought out nicely when the lustrous surfaces are viewed in a light. The eye appeal is superb; the overall quality is exceptionally high end. A few mint made clash marks and die cracks are noted, all artifacts of the manufacturing process. The design types are boldly struck with only light weakness in some of the obverse star centers. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 2. Concluding the description in the Pogue sale, the cataloger noted the following information: “There are not many of these in high grade. The finest is a single MS-64 (PCGS), apparently the piece sold as an NGC MS-64 in the July 2004 Heritage sale; no MS-64 now appears on the NGC Census. This example is tied right behind that one with the Eliasberg coin, which last sold in 2006 for $115,000, and another that has not been traced. As noted by Ron Guth at PCGS CoinFacts, The 1803 Large 3 Half Dollar is extremely rare in Mint State, with only five examples certified thus far by PCGS (as of February 2012), a number that increased by one with the submission of this piece. When Russell Logan surveyed 25 major Draped Bust half collections in the mid 1990s, he found 67 1803 half dollars, but not one of them was graded Mint State.” The Pogues acquired this fantastic CHOICE 1803 half from the Hain Family Collection sold in Stack’s 2002 Americana Sale, lot 1220. In May 2015, this coin realized $76,375. Since then, the other PCGS/CAC MS63, the above mentioned Eliasberg coin, sold for just shy of $100,000 in July 2015. This is an important opportunity for anyone who missed the Pogue sale to be able to buy one after the fact--most of the coins went right into major collections, and will likely not be appearing on the market any time soon!
