PRINCIPALS Laura was raised in Highland Park, NJ. During high school, the coin bug hit her hard. Her trip to the 1976 NYC ANA left a lasting mark and huge desire for her to own and handle the greatest rarities. While attending Monmouth University, Laura attended coin shows more than classes. After college, she started LSS RCI, a wholesale coin company. In 1986, she realized the need for a “better” coin retailer and teamed up in 1986 with George Huang to form Legend Numismatics. In 1996 Bruce Morelan became a partner and since then Legend has exclusively built or assisted in assembling this generation’s greatest collections. In 2012 Laura saw the need for a smaller, boutique auction firm, and created Legend-Morphy with Dan Morphy, whom she split with in 2014. Today, Laura is also a leading consumer advocate for coins. The passion has never subsided, and she keeps a beautiful Proof Walker on her desk to this day.Laura Sperber Bruce started collecting coins when he was only six years old and by the time he was in high school his Partner dream was to be a coin dealer. But life intervened and instead, Bruce went into business. By chance, he became Legend Numismatics’ financial backer in 1996. His great grandmother had given him threeBruce Morelan coins when he was young, one of which being a Trade Dollar, so he set out to build the finest Trade Partner Dollar set. After a few years with ultra rarities, Bruce returned to his love of dollars and completed both a set of Gobrechts and a set of Seated Dollars. Julie Abrams After selling those sets, Bruce recently returned to dollars with a new Gobrecht set and a spectacular President early dollar set capped by his dream coin, the Amon Carter 1794 Dollar. Not many collector’s can say they have completed not only the finest 1794-1885 Dollar Sets and have over the years owned such coins as two 1913 Liberty Head Nickels, an 1894-S Dime, 1876-CC Twenty Cent piece, 1827 Original and Restrike Quarters, 1838-O Half Dollar, two 1885 Trade Dollars and four 1884 Trade Dollars! Julie Abrams started in numismatics in 1986 when she joined up with Bernard Rome and launched Teletrade, the first computerized auction company. Teletrade developed a unique coin trading method, utilizing state-of-the-art digitized voice board technology to run live auctions before the advent of the internet. As President of Teletrade, Julie helped expand the company, increasing the frequency of auctions and expanding annual sales to $24 million within a few years. In 1999, GMAI, a publicly traded company, purchased Teletrade and Ms. Abrams became Executive Vice President of Sales for the parent company. Her job responsibilities included continuing her role as CEO for Teletrade as well as marketing to buyers and consignors, with the goal of maintaining a balance between inventory and sales while growing the business. In 2004 she joined Stacks-Bowers, an old world traditional auction house where she worked to expand their e-commerce presence, including the development of an online bidding platform for the firm. She also marketed Stacks’ programs to secure consignments from dealers and institutions such as banks, museums and universities. Julie is a member of the American Numismatic Association, the Central States Numismatic Association and Florida United Numismatists. THE 1994 COLLECTION THE 1994 COLLECTION Legend Rare Coin Auctions is thrilled and honored to have been consigned the 1994 Collection. It is, in fact, one of our sister company’s all-time favorite collections. The collector was handling some “investment” funds and gave Legend Numismatics a free hand to cherry pick from the very best coins of that time that were available on the market. This group of “wonder” coins was hand selected by the principals of Legend Numismatics back in 1993/1994. The core of this collection are the matte proof Lincoln cents, and immediately you will notice they are wildly high end and are pristine in terms of originality. The Proof 20C pieces are to die for. The 1846 $1 PCGS MS64+ blows away many MS65 Seated Liberty dollars we have ever seen. While the grand highlight, the $20 1909 PCGS PR66 CAC, is unlike any that have been on the market since it was purchased by Legend out of an auction in 1994! Sadly, the guardian of the 1994 collection passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. His memory will live on with the world knowing about his great collection of coins. Even though these coins have been off the market only 23 years, the quality and freshness are unrivaled. EVERY coin is being sold with NO reserve Note: we will be trying something different with the Matte Proof Lincolns. They will be offered individually first. Then we will add up the total and add 5% and offer it as a lot. It is a complete Matte Proof set in GEM-including the 09 VDB and every coin is PCGS CAC. We doubt we could reproduce the quality of this set (these coins are far better than the holders suggest), so if possible we would like to keep it intact.22

The mirrors are SUPERB, with full, deep red reflectivity. A few areas of iridescence can be seen as the light dances off the surfaces. The reliefs appear to be sculpted, chiseled out of the metal with extremely bold definition. The design elements appear to float on the surfaces in a stunning 3D effect. A pair of tiny flecks will serve to identify this stunning coin for posterity. Our sister firm, Legned Numismatics, purchased this coin in December 1992. We are unsure of the prior pedigree, but it does not match the Floyd Starr (Stack’s 1984) coin. Machine doubling can be seen on the date, stars, and Capital Dome. What look like minor rim bumps are actually imparted from the edge. Both the doubling and the “bleeding” of the edge stars are artifacts from a die that was a touch loose when this coin was struck and is seen on a number of examples. A forceful blow from the powerful hydraulic medal press has rendered every detail to their fullest advantage. The surfaces are highly lustrous and free of any lines or ticks. While under appreciated by Collector’s in 1909, today these are HIGHLY prized for their beauty and exceptional rarity. The era was a whirlwind of activity at the mint with innovative new designs and new techniques that were inspired by what wasbeing done in various European mints. In 1907, the Liberty series, which had been produced with a polished or brilliant finish came to an end and with it came the masterfully artistic and innovative designs of Augustus St. Gaudens ($10 and $20) and Bela Lion Pratt ($2.50 and $5). Mint officials reported that the new designs would not lend themselves to the traditional Brilliant finish, and a new process, which had been in use at the Paris and Royal mints was employed. The sandblast, or matte proofs were struck for commercial sale in 1908 to Collector’s. The finish, which was created by blasting the struck coins with sand left something to be desired for contemporary Collector’s (while today matte proofs with their original olive-gold patina are highly desirable; they were seen as dark and unattractive at the time of issue). A second finish, what we know today as the Roman or Satin finish, havelong been subject of debate of how they were produced. There has been much confusion, as unlike the matte process where mint documents state that the coins were subjected to an actual blast of sand, there is no documentary evidence of the process of dieand planchet preparation. The cataloger (GC) had an informative conversation with John Dannreuther (who has been studying U.S.Gold Proofs for soon to be published encyclopedia), regarding the process. The original theory was that the dies were treated with an acid solution that would etch the surface. Today experts believe that the Satin Finish dies were produced by sand blasting thedies before striking, and then leaving the finished coins as is, without blasting them again. Due to their somewhat different texture, Wayte Raymond called them Brilliant Matte Proofs’ as the color was a brighter, yellow gold with a satiny lustrous surface, andperhaps his term is a fair assessment of what they are. In our discussion, JD explained that in the past, numismatic experts thought multiple finishes were employed, as individual coins do look different from each other, some being quite grainy in appearance to others that have a more vibrant, nearly prooflike lustrous surface. Today, however, it is believed that only one die finish was employed, with the finish wearing off with each successive coin struck, explaining these differences. While only 166 coins were struck, you can see clearly distinct die states, from those struck early on with highly granular surfaces to those struck later on display a smooth, PL lustrous look. PCGS 4, NGC 9, CAC 3. This coin has been off the market since our sister firm, Legend Numismatics, placed it into this collection in a green tag PCGS holder, graded PR65 (back in 1994).
