PCGS# 3993 | ESTIMATE: $9,000+ OUR ESTIMATES The estimates you see published in this catalog are based on HAMMER. Keep in mind that a coin could be either low or high end for the grade, have stunning color or be dull, all of which radically affect a coin’s value. Yes, there can be huge price differences within a grade, and we offer estimates as a guide so Collector’s can have a better idea of value. One thing we will never do is offer low ball estimates in order to claim stronger sales. These published estimates represent what Legend Rare Coin Auctions determines to be an approximate high wholesale value for the coin. The numbers are based upon current market values, similar trades, auction prices, published prices, and a consideration of the coin’s quality. There is no guarantee that the estimated prices are minimums or are exactly what you can expect to get if you attempt to resell them wholesale. We always advise you to view the coins you are interested in and calculate what you’ll pay using as much information as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask us. LOT 120 10C 1796 PCGS MS63 CAC A lovely CHOICE Mint State example from the first year of dime production. Frosty and semi-reflective surfaces surround crisply struck devices. Every detail is rendered to full definition in Liberty’s hair and essentially complete in the eagle’s breast feathers. Only the slightest weakness is noted in the centers of stars 12 and 13. Pale gold blends with rich silver and dove accents. An earlier die state with just a crack at TA in STATES, not a full fledged cud. Despite the MS63 grade, there are no singularly significant marks to describe. The JR-3 variety is rated as R-5 and is the second rarest variety for the year behind the JR-5. This impressive coin is ex John Whitney Walter Collection, Stack’s, May 1999, lot 1768. John Whitney assembled an essentially complete collection of the coins of 1796 by die variety, half cent through $10 gold, and he was dubbed “Mr. 1796.” He purchased this coin from the Stack’s April 1988 sale of the F. Dabney Caldwell Collection, lot 2324. There are two other examples of this R-5 variety graded MS63 by NGC, these include the terminal die state that sold one lot before this one in the Whitney Sale, lot 1767 (this piece had an extensive pedigree going back to the early 20th century). The other is from the Haig Koshkarian Collection, ANR, March 2004, lot 46 (purchased from Ed Milas in May 1987). Hailing from one of the greatest specialized collections of Mercury dimes ever sold, the Louis Bassano Collection, this remarkable GEM is a truly special coin. LOT 129 10C 1920-D PCGS MS67 FB CAC FROM THE GRAND PRIX COLLECTION Ex Joshua II Collection as noted on the insert. This coin is so close to being an MS68 FB. We can’t imagine a better 1920-D! The surfaces are virtually perfect. Only using a super strong glass can you see a few microscopic ticks/frost breaks. Regardless, they take nothing away from this coin being a well deserved MS67FB. LOT 131 10C 1921-D PCGS MS66+ FB FROM THE GRAND PRIX COLLECTION Tied with perhaps as many as four coins for second FINEST seen by PCGS of this important KEY date! Glorious and elegant, the luster blooms with a bold vibrance. The strike is almost razor sharp in nature, with no hints of softness to be found. Traces of golden iridescent tone and a touch of icy blue and clear rose add to the SUPERB look. We note a single, stray contact mark and minor spot in the right reverse field for the sake of full disclosure. The American economy took a short but sharp stumble in 1921 as the businesses converted back from producing war goods to more peacetime activities. Farm prices fluctuated downward. These economic machinations dropped the demand for new coins so several dates saw much lower mintages than commonly seen in this era. This Denver Mint 1921 dime is destined to be a major highlight of an advanced collection and will certainly well represent this elusive issue as close to perfection as can be imagined. LOT 186 50C 1794 PCGS AU53 CAC O-101. Multiple WOW factors here! This coin is such a SUPERB GEM AU we believe it is God’s gift to all 1794 50C (except for Simpson’swhich is MS64).Of course PCGS grades these coins ridiculously too tight. We can assure you this monster of an AU is not one of those you have to question “is this an XF or an AU?” It absolutely is one of the BEST. AU’s we have ever seen or handled. For a 1794 50C, this piece has mind boggling surfaces. Not only are they incredibly clean, but they actually have a fair amount of ORIGINAL luster. We sold an MS61 that did not have anywhere near the “pop” this coin has. There are NO adjustment marks (that is huge). The luster brings out the best of the gorgeous and even totally ORIGINAL toning of deep pewter/gold/pale navy/pale purple colors. Miss Liberty and the details are exceptionally struck and show strong detail. There is NO rubbing on the high points and the wear is light and even. The eye appeal is tremendous! PCGS 2, NGC 8, CAC 1. This coin has NEVER been in auction. In fact it has been away with an incredibly picky Early Bust coin specialist collector. You will too! LOT 189 50C 1796 15 STARS. PCGS XF40 O-101, Rarity-5. What a wonderfully wholesome and original coin that has long been known to be one of the most difficult type coins to obtain in any grade. Only 3,918 pieces of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle two-year TYPE were struck in both 1796 and 1797, and survival rates were tiny. Research by numismatist Jon Amato has documented only 74 distinct examples of the 1796 15 Star variety and of that meager number approximately 30% are damaged with tooling, scratches, or cleaning that keeps them from being graded. That puts even more pressure on the few coins like this that offer attractive surfaces, color, and are trouble free. The strike is well balanced, and the wear is even and light on the highest points of the Robert Scot and John Eckstein design. Remarkably there are no adjustment marks or rim bumps on this coin. The fields are generally pleasing, with just a few tiny contact marks noted here and there, none of which are distracting and are perfectly acceptable for this circulated grade example. This coin would clearly make a welcome addition to any advanced collection. After the initial but modest production of half dollars in 1794, the Philadelphia Mint really cranked up the presses in 1795, striking nearly 300,000 coins of this denomination, all of the Flowing Hair design. Apparently demand was satisfied for the time being, as so few half dollars were then struck in 1796 and 1797, and all of these were the Draped Bust, Small Eagle style during these two years. Half dollar production then came to halt until resuming in 1801, and by that time the new Heraldic Eagle reverse style had been adopted. Needless to say, demand from date, variety, and type collectors alike keeps pressure high when one of these 1796 half dollars appears on the market, and bids can come from many possible suitors. PCGS 2, NGC 0. The most recent example that we sold in a similar mid range grade was a PCGS VF30 that we sold for $99,875 in December 2015. The presently offered XF coin is a wonderful survivor of this rarest silver type coin and bound for a great type or date set. PCGS# 6057 | ESTIMATE: $110,000+ 92

Very crisply struck devices are not what is usually encountered for this variety. Struck from a later state of the dies with multiple obverse die cracks. Only the slightest touch of friction on the highest points. PCGS 101, NGC 54, CAC 26. Most PCGS-graded coins have sold in the $2,233 to $3,630. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,850. PCGS MS64+ CAC A condition census (likely second finest known) O-107, which is a scarce R-4 variety. Awe inspiring luster shines in a light and brings full definition to the very pretty original toning. Sharply struck, which is surprising considering the late states of both dies, especially the reverse which, by the time this coin fell from the press, was seriously shattered. The diagnostic crack that encircles the legend from C in the denomination around to the rim above M in AMERICA is thick. An additional crack bisects the reverse from the rim above E in AMERICA, which weaves across the wing, through the shield, to the first pair of olive leaves. That crack splinters off and goes into the field between the eagle and the scroll. Other minor cracks can be seen coming out of the rim and ending in a letter or some other design element. The eye appeal is SUPERB and this coin really is a GEM. PCGS 39, NGC 7, CAC 15. Only 6 examples are graded MS64+ at PCGS. This is the most recent PCGS MS64+ CAC to sell, realizing $10,869 in our May 2017 New Orleans Regency Auction. Prior to that, one brought $14,100 in February 2017 and another sold for $18,800 in 2014. LOT 193 50C 1815/2 PCGS AU58 CAC O-101--the only dies utilized to strike the 47,150 half dollars with the 1815 date. The KEY date to the ever popular Capped Bust half dollar series and all are overdates; the 2 is clearly seen under the 5 to the naked eye. The presently offered AU58 is a true prize for the specialist collector. Rich patina blankets the semi-satiny surfaces. The details are boldly defined, and well struck throughout, except on some stars. The entire mintage of 47,150 was struck using a single pair of dies and was delivered early in 1816. Hours after, one of the buildings that housed the planchet rolling equipment burned down, preventing gold and silver coins from being produced again until 1817 (when only half dollars were struck for depositors). Because of the low mintage, the date is constantly in demand from collectors. PCGS 21, NGC 25, CAC 5. While definitely not the same coin, there was a similar AU58 that sold in the 2014 FUN auction for $30,550. This coin sold for $22,325 in our December 2017 Regency Auction and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $27,500. LOT 194 50C 1817/3 OVERTON-101A. PCGS MS63+ Ex Link, as noted on the holder. One of the FINEST KNOWN examples of this very popular overdate. Clearly in the Condition Census, this 63+ is very CHOICE for the variety. The quality and eye appeal are truly dramatic! Indeed, the only “flaw” are a pair of mint made slag marks on the reverse which are part of the planchet production process (this is where some impurities in the silver came out to the surface as the silver ingot was being drawn to prepare the planchets). Both sides offer a deep blue and orange-amber toning that captivates the viewer’s attention. Sharply struck, the devices are crisply impressed by the screw press. The 7 over 3 in the date is visible even at arm’s length. A bold satin luster brings the beautiful toning to life with a vivid brilliance. The dies were sharply clashed before this one was struck. Try as we might, we cannot find a prior pedigree to this high grade, beautiful CHOICE Mint State 1817/3. It does not match the Queller or Vermeulle coins which were both described as Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, but were uncertified when they sold in 2002 and 2001 respectively. PCGS 3, NGC 0. None of the three MS63+s have ever sold in auction. In September 2016, we sold a PCGS MS63 for $27,025 in Regency Auction XVIII. In July 2013, a PCGS/CAC MS64 sold for $61,688. This high grade example will see considerable bidding when it crosses the auction block. The dramatic boldness of the overdate and strong eye appeal will entice a very strong hammer price when the auctioneer calls the last bid! Good luck. PCGS# 6111 | ESTIMATE: $22,000+ 95

LOT 195 50C 1819/8 LARGE 9. OVERTON-104 PCGS MS65 Ex Link, as noted on the PCGS insert. A beautiful and original GEM that is among the very finest of the variety known, the 5th Edition Overton Census is 66,65,65,64,64, and ranks just behind the PCGS MS66 Pogue and NGC MS66 Overton examples. A strong, satiny mint frost provides an ember-like glow that lies beneath a pearly-silver, lilac-gray, and olive-tan patina that deepens to a rich gold at the peripheries. A swirling cartwheel luster emboldens the essentially pristine surface quality. A strong glass reveals zero imperfections either in the fields or on the well struck devices. The details are generally crisp in definition, with just some weakness, as usually seen, in a few of the stars and eagle’s feathers. We are not entirely sure why this coin did not CAC, it is very pleasing and original. The eye appeal is wonderful, as should be expected for a GEM. PCGS 5, NGC 0. Prior to selling in our sale of the Konstantine Collection, there had not been an example sold in auction since the 2012 ANA auction--may as well be a lifetime! The current Collectors Universe value is $32,500 and keep in mind that the Newman NGC MS65+ CAC sold for nearly $50,000 in November 2013. PCGS has graded only four coins finer, the finest being the aforementioned Pogue coin.
