RTanhceh’s Most SFroiemndmly elier Malinda Romine Derry Vannortwick’s legacy of successes in the trade led him to join the Grand Restaurant Group, initially to assist in the remodel of Bellamy’s in the Ranch, the result of which created an elegantly casual dining venue for the opening of Nick & G’s, adjoined by the cool ambiance of the blulounge. Choosing to expand on his creation, Vannortwick found an accessible nook at the rear of the restaurant to feature his favored wines and cheeses from across the globe. The setting is quaint, the tables aligned and the choices on menu, delectable. It has fast become the perfect hideaway for a sampling of fine wines and cheeses, as recommended by the house Sommelier, or by adventurous choice. The friendly welcome upon arrival is genuine, the wine choices remarkable, and the experience memorable. Wines and cheeses are also available for take away. Its recent discovery by the many has led it to fast becoming the talk of the town for its exceptional wine selection, and as headlined, a most friendly Sommelier. corknknife.com | (858) 703-1484 6106 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 Photography by Elena Uvarova Flowers by thirdbloom.com

PROMOTIONAL Helmsmen SD James T. Harris III President – University of San Diego Jim Harris took the helm as president of USD in 2015 and dedicates his academic career to spearheading civic and community engagements and connecting academic environments with intractable issues faced by society. Harris embodies community-engaged learning, which is how the University of San Diego describes each student’s mission to use classroom lessons to serve communities near and far. It was under his leadership that USD challenged itself to set the standard for an engaged, contemporary Catholic university where innovative Changemakers confront humanity’s urgent challenges. For Harris, this isn’t just a vision statement. It’s his true north. Since his earliest days on campus, he’s made it a habit to volunteer alongside students who were making a difference at USD’s Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action. The Mulvaney Center makes it possible for USD to partner with and serve communities around the world. Nearly 100 courses at USD include a community engagement component. Nearly 7,000 students participate in community engagement projects annually. Recently, USD was ranked number one in the nation for its commitment to public service in Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide and Rankings, which recognizes the number of USD students who choose to serve their country as a member of the military, the voting engagement of its students, the number of alumni involved who are active in the Peace Corps, the number of students who complete a term of service with AmeriCorps and the institution’s dedication to community service. Harris, along with seven USD alumni, were among those recently recognized as “San Diego’s most influential leaders who have made a significant difference during these unprecedented times” of the COVID-19 pandemic. Harris was recognized for leading USD’s collaboration with county leaders to establish USD as a free COVID-19 testing site, supporting underserved and underrepresented populations in the local community. Today, among other urgent challenges, USD confronts human trafficking and homelessness with its legacy of community-engaged learning stronger than ever.

Following his 2-years at Stouffers’, he landed a job as a junior executive with DeLorean Motor Company, where he remained for five years. During his time with DeLorean, Shea built up an industry network and went on to become a regional manager for Mitsubishi, which was then moving into the U.S. market. In 1991, Dan began a consulting business specializing in assisting businesses with financial and operational restructuring. Through this process, he became an equity partner of one of his clients, and three years later, the business was acquired by a Fortune 500 company, and at age 43, Shea retired for one year, which he describes as the most boring year of his life. It was then that he began his partnership with Paradigm Investment Group. An activist for many social justice issues, Dan has partnered with Peter Seidler, the majority owner of the San Diego Padres, and several business and civic leaders in the community to tackle San Diego’s homeless problem. Their efforts have resulted in the placement of four industrial tent shelters throughout the city housing unsheltered individuals as they continue to urge the city to utilize vacant buildings for homeless shelter and service. A petition drive to influence political leaders to utilize more of the city’s vacant buildings for shelter has received strong support. Dan was proud to assume the position of Feeding San Diego CEO in November 2020 and looks forward to growing the mission and impact Feeding San Diego continues to have on the community.

PROMOTIONAL Photography by Greg Siller Helmsmen SD David A. Smith Founder Honor Flight San Diego David A. Smith is the Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, a non-profit that honors our veterans by flying them to Washington D. C. to visit the memorials dedicated to remembering and honoring their service and sacrifices to our country. He was inspired to start a local San Diego Hub after accompanying his Father, a WWII Marine Combat Veteran, as a Guardian on a Lone Eagle Honor Flight in May, 2010 organized by the Honor Flight National office staff located in Springfield, Ohio. While on site, Dave spoke with the National Director of Honor Flight about beginning a Hub in San Diego. He was told that Honor Flight at the time had just one Hub located in Northern California. With San Diego having one of the largest populations of veterans in the country, Dave felt the need for San Diego to have its own Hub and with approval, began the arduous task of forming the 501c3 non-profit organization here in San Diego. Dave reached out to business and community leaders he knew and invited them to his home to learn about Honor Flight and its mission to honor our veterans. Descriptions of the customary “Tours of Honor” and videos were shown displaying the positive impact the 3-day 2-night trip to Washington DC had on the veterans and guardians. The impression left on those present led to the founding of the San Diego Hub, which officially began operations on August 20, 2010. Top priority for an Honor Flight is given to the most senior veterans, currently WWII and Korean War survivors, and to veterans who are terminally ill and capable of making the trip. There are far more applicants on waiting lists than can be served and time for each of these men and women is running short, and with trips being cancelled this past year due to Covid compliance, the challenge becomes far greater. In addition to running his own nationwide leadership consulting business, Professional Workplace Interaction, Inc., specializing in Workplace and School Violence Prevention, the past 10 years Dave has made over 200 Honor Flight presentations in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, and Washington State. He has helped start numerous hubs on the West Coast and with the founding of Honor Flight Philadelphia. https://www.honorflightsandiego.org/

Photography by Alexander Zahedi PROMOTIONAL Helmsmen SD Daryoosh Khashayar Founder of Khashayar Law Group Attorney Khashayar left Iran at age 7, traveling through France, and eventually settled within the United States to be raised and schooled in the San Francisco Bay Area. With an initial interest in architecture, his true passion came to light when having attended and graduated from John F. Kennedy University College of Law with his Juris Doctor Degree. In 2005, Khashayar settled with his family in San Diego and focused his practice on personal injury, transactional, and real estate law, with offices now located in San Diego, Del Mar, and Beverly Hills. As an advocate at trial, his successes have won multi-million dollar awards on behalf of his clients, which reputation precedes him when time for pre-trial negotiations take hold with opposing counsel, providing weighty leverage in seeking the highest settlement offer for his client. Methodical in his approach, Khashayar begins weighing the strength of his client’s case from the initial consultation, and although a litigator at heart, his years of practice before both judge and jury provides that inners sense of knowing when the best course of action in his client’s interest is to accept a just settlement rather than risk a prolonged trial with an uncertain outcome. Having written a book titled “Civil Litigation,” Khashayar explains in detail all aspects of trial preparation and the importance of not only explicitly knowing the facts of the case, and the potential theories that opposing counsel might present at trial, but also knowing the strength of the witness testimony, be it by expert or pedestrian, which weighs heavily, particularly in a trial by jury. Very much the family man, Khashayar has both son and daughter and is actively involved in all of their activities. Having had a younger brother pass away at a young age from Epilepsy, he is fully supportive of the LOKK for Epilepsy Foundation and various non-profit organizations that lend support to the homless. When considering what else might he have done with a career other than law, Khashayar is quick to answer that he could not imagine another path that would have provided a greater sense of pleasure or accomplishment than the practice of law. He feels that he is where he needs to be, and hopefully, where he can accomplish his greatest success and strongest contribution to those who seek redress from the calamities and challenges that befall them.

Marchesani began his investment career 25 years ago, working for a consulting firm that counsels institutional clients such as foundations & endowments on their investment portfolios. In that role, he researched and analyzed top money managers, gaining invaluable insights into investment strategies. “When I was on the consulting side, and interviewing money managers, I had a front-row seat to some of the best minds in our profession, from which I have created my own unique investment process.” David later moved to San Diego from New Jersey, to join what was at the time the largest money manager in town, Nicholas-Applegate. In 2015, David launched Iapetus Capital, a boutique investment firm focused on U.S. Equities. His goal is to bring the quality of institutional money management to individual investors. David first achieved some recognition in San Diego when he produced & directed a documentary about entrepreneurship titled VentureTown, USA. He made the movie while obtaining his Master of Science in Entrepreneurship from San Diego State. Several of San Diego’s business leaders appeared in the movie, such as Irwin Jacobs, Ralph Rubio, Leonard Lavin, and Brian Dovey. “There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t use some insight that I gleaned from those entrepreneurs. Making that movie was one of the best educational experiences of my life.” His ability to help his clients build and sustain their wealth has made a positive impact in the lives of San Diegans. During 2020 in particular, he successfully navigated the fluctuations in the stock market during the Covid pandemic, allowing his investors to calmly focus on the long term. His passion for helping others, combined with his investment skill, enable David to shepherd his clients’ portfolios during various market environments, while also contributing to the broader San Diego community. Jennifer recalls that I just didn’t feel like myself. I was exhausted. No matter how much I rested, I couldn’t regain my strength. Finally, I listened to my husband who got tired of hearing me complain and went to see my doctor. Nobody expects the diagnosis of cancer. I didn’t have time to feel sorry for myself. First, there was the surgery, and then the post-operative chemotherapy. A year later I was “cured”. I was so thankful for my support, and I knew I was one of the “lucky ones”. But when I looked at myself in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself. I felt guilty even considering doing something for my “looks”, but I just wanted to be me again. Feeling insecure about her appearance, a friend recommended that she see Dr. Brian Reagan, a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in La Jolla. Jennifer comments, I immediately knew I was in the right office. His credentials, his post-op results, and his calming demeanor - all were spot on. He told me he could safely and predictably help me look like myself. Dr. Reagan mentions that Jen definitely went through a tough period in her life, and it showed. Reagan describes aging as a combination of three factors: changes to the quality of the skin, loss of volume, and laxity to the lower face and neck. He addressed all three with Jen by performing perioral dermabrasion, pan facial fat grafting, and a deep plane lower face/neck lift. Jen recalls the process and recovery as having looked a little scary at first, but after one week I could see the results. It was never painful, and after 2 weeks I started going outside to do my normal activities. I couldn’t believe it, it was me again! At is core, plastic surgery is very empowering says Dr. Reagan. Jen just wanted to feel and look like herself. I appreciated her trust in me to get her there. It’s been a great journey.
