1 Suttantapiṭake Dīghanikāyo/Suttapiṭaka’s Dīghanikāya Sīlakkhandhavaggo Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa. 4 Soṇadaṇḍasuttaṃ/ Discourses of Soṇadaṇḍa 1. Evaṃ me sutaṃ. Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā aṅgesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi yena campā tadavasari. Tatra sudaṃ bhagavā campāyaṃ viharati gaggarāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre. Thus I have heard/at one time/the Fortunate One/ in Campā/was touring/with a great company of bhikkhus/together with five hundred bhikkhus/where is Campā/was entered there/there/the Fortunate One/at Campā/dwells/at the bank of Gaggara lotus-pond/ 2.Tena kho pana samayena soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo campaṃ ajjhāvasati sattussadaṃ satiṇakaṭṭhodakaṃ sadhaññaṃ rājabhoggaṃ raññā māgadhena seniyena bimbisārena dinnaṃ rājadāyaṃ brahmadeyyaṃ. At that time/the Brahmin Soṇdaṇḍa/at Campā/was living/a populous place/full of grass, wood, water, and corn/the fits to be used by the king/which were given by the Magadhā’s King, Seniya Bimbisāra/as a gift to be given to the Brahmin/ (3.) Assosuṃ kho campeyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā \"samaṇo khalu bho gotamo sakyaputto sakyakulā pabbajito aṅgesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi campaṃ anuppatto, campāyaṃ viharati gaggarāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre. Taṃ kho pana bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ evaṃ kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggato: \"itipi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathī satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā’ti. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaṃ deseti ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. Sādhu kho pana tathārūpānaṃ arahataṃ dassanaṃ hotī\"ti. It is heard by the Brahmins and householders of Campā; ‘Recluse/gentlemen/Gotama/the son of Sākya/from Sākyan clan/was ordained/ in Aṅga/was touring/great company of bhikkhus/together with five hundred bhikkhus/where the village, which is called Campā/was entered there/There/the Fortunate One/at the bank of Gaggara lotus-pond/dwells/ that Fortunate One/thus/the virtues fame has gone forth; Thus indeed is he/the Fortunate One/the Noble One/the Fully Enlightened One/the Perfect in knowledge and conduct/the Well- gone/the knower of world/the incomparable leader of men to be tamed/the Teacher of gods and men/the Awakened One/the Fortunate One/ He/this wolrd including the heaven, Māra and Brahm,recluse and Brahmin’s progeny/ that by himself/having well-realized/makes known/He/preaches the dhamma/which is beautiful in the beginning/beautiful in the middle/and beautifull in the end/with meaning/letters extremely complete/completely pure/chastity/declares/ it is virtous/then/to such a noble one/to pay visit

2 (4.)3. atha kho campeyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā campāya nikkhamitvā saṅghasaṅghī gaṇībhūtā yena gaggarā pokkharaṇī tenupasaṅkamanti. 4.Tena kho pana samayena soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo uparipāsāde divāseyyaṃ upagato hoti. Addasā kho soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo campeyyake brāhmaṇagahapatike campāya nikkhamitvā saṅghasaṅghī gaṇībhūte yena gaggarā pokkharaṇī tenupasaṅkamante. Disvā khattaṃ āmantesi: \"kinnu kho bho khatte campeyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā campāya nikkhamitvā saṅghasaṅghī gaṇībhūtā yena gaggarā pokkharaṇī tenupasaṅkamantī?\"Ti Then/the Brahmins and householders of Campā/having left from Campā/being in great crowds/in great number/where the Gaggarā lotus-pond/approached there/at that time/Soṇadaṇḍ Brahmin/to upper story/for his midday rest/had gone/have seen/Soṇadaṇḍ Brahmin/Campā’s Brahmins and householders/having left from Capmā/being in a crowds/in a great number/where the Gaggāra pond/were approaching there/Having seen/the steward/asked/For what reason/dear steward/ Campā’s Brahmins and householders/having left from Capmā/being in a crowds/in a great number/where the Gaggāra pond/were approaching there (5.) \"Atthi kho bho samaṇo gotamo sakyaputto sakyakulā pabbajito aṅgesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi campaṃ anuppatto campāya viharati gaggarāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre. 3 (6.)5. Tena hi bho khatte yena campeyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā tenupasaṅkama. Upasaṅkamitvā campeyyake brāhmaṇagahapatike evaṃ vadehi: \"soṇadaṇḍo bho brāhmaṇo evamāha: ’āgamentu kira bhavanto soṇadaṇḍo’pi brāhmaṇo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissatī\"ti. Therein/dear companion/where Campā’s Brahmins and householders/let approach there/having approached/to Cmapā’s Brahmins and house holders/let say thus/ ‘Gentlemen/ Soṇdaṇḍa Brahmin/said as follows; let wait/you gentlemen/Soṇdaṇḍa Brahmin, too/recluse Gotama/to see/will approach/ (7.) ’Evaṃ bho’ti kho so khattā soṇadaṇḍassa brāhmaṇassa paṭissutvā yena campeyyakā brāhmaṇagahapatikā tenupasaṅkami. Upasaṅkamitvā campeyyake brāhmaṇa gahapatike etadavoca: \"soṇadaṇḍo bho brāhmaṇo evamāha: \"āgamentū kira bhavanto. Soṇadaṇḍo’pi brāhmaṇo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissatī\"ti. Yes, Sir/the companion/to Soṇadaṇḍa Brahmin/having agreed/ where Campā’s brhamins and householders/approached there/having approached/to Campā’s Brahmins and house holders said as follows; Gentlemen, Soṇadaṇḍa Brahmin said as thus ‘let wait/you gentlemen/Soṇdaṇḍa Brahmin, too/recluse Gotama/to see/will approach/ (8.)6. Tena kho pana samayena nānāverajjakānaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ pañcamattāni brāhmaṇasatāni campāyaṃ paṭivasanti kenacideva karaṇīyena. Assosuṃ kho te brāhmaṇā: ’soṇadaṇḍo kira brāhmaṇo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissatī’ti. Atha kho te brāhmaṇā yena soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo tenupasaṅkamiṃsu. Upasaṅkamitvā soṇadaṇḍaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etadavocuṃ: ’saccaṃ kira bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissatī’?\"Ti \"Evaṃ kho me bho hoti ahampi samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissāmī\"ti. At that time/among the variety of provincial Brahmins/they are five hundred Brahmins/at Campā/were living due to some work/It was heard by those Brahmins that ‘Soṇadaṇḍa Brahmins/Recluse Gotama/to see/will apparoach’. Then/those Brahmins/where Soṇadaṇḍa brahmin/approached there/having approached/to Soṇdaṇḍa Brahmin/as thus/said/is it true/you Soṇdaṇḍa/Recluse Gotama/to see/will go? Yes, I/gentlemen/Recluse Gotama/to see/will approach/

4 (9.)7. \"Mā bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkami. Na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Sace bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamissati, bhoto soṇadaṇḍassa yaso hāyissati samaṇassa gotamassa yaso abhivaḍḍhissati. Yampi bhoto soṇadaṇḍassa yaso hāyissati samaṇassa gotamassa yaso abhivaḍḍhissati, iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo ubhato sujāto mātito ca pitito ca, saṃsuddhagahaṇiko yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā, akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo ubhato sujāto mātito ca pitito ca, saṃsuddhagahaṇiko yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā, akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Do not/reverend/Soṇadaṇḍa/Recluse Gotama/to see/go/It is not suitable/reverend Soṇadaṇḍa/Recluse Gotama/to see/to approach/If/the reverend Soṇadaṇḍa/recluse Gotama/to see/will approcahe/Soṇadaṇḍa’s glory will disappear/Recluse Gotama’s glory/will increase/If reverend Soṅadaṇḍa’s glory/will disappear/and Recluse Gotama’s glory will increase/in this respect/it is not suitable/you/Soṇadaṇḍa/Recluse Gotama/to see/ approach/Recluse Gotama/himself/is suitable/your Soṇadaṇḍa/to see/to apparoach/the reverend/ Soṇdaṇḍa is in both side well-born, from mother and father/of pure discend indeed/through seven generations/it is not upset/it is blameless in respect of birth/ When/ the reverend Soṇadaṇḍa/to see/to apparoach/the reverend Soṇdaṇḍa is in both side well-born, from mother and father/of pure discend indeed/through seven generations/it is not upset/it is blameless in respect of birth/ in this respect, too/ it is not suitable/you/Soṇadaṇḍa/Recluse Gotama/to see/ approach/Recluse Gotama/himself/to approach (10.) Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo aḍḍho mahaddhano mahābhogo. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo aḍḍho mahaddhano mahābhogo. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. 5 (11.) Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo ajjhāyako mantadharo tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkharappabhedānaṃ itihāsapañcamānaṃ, padako, veyyākaraṇo, lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo ajjhāyako mantadharo tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkharappabhedānaṃ itihāsapañcamānaṃ, padako, veyyākaraṇo, lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato brahmavaṇṇī brahmavaccasī, akkhuddāvakāso dassanāya. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato brahmavaṇṇī brahmavaccasī, akkhuddāvakāso dassanāya. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. The reverend Soṇadaṇḍa is handsome/good looking/pleasant/the most excellent caste distingtion and translation, the process of excellent complection/with the body like that of Mahābrahma/of no mean appearance/When/ the reverend Soṇadaṇḍa/ is handsome/good looking/pleasant/the most excellent caste distingtion and translation, the process of excellent complection/with the body like that of Mahābrahma/of no mean appearance/in this respect/ it is not suitable/the reverend Soṇadaṇḍa/the recluse Gotama/to see/ approach/the recluse Gotama/himself/is suitable (13.) Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo sīlavā vuddhasīlī vuddhasīlena samannāgato. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo sīlavā vuddhasīlī vuddhasīlena samannāgato. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo kalyāṇavāco kalyāṇavākkaraṇo, poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo bahunnaṃ ācariyapācariyo, tīṇi māṇavakasatāni mante vāceti. Bahū kho pana nānādisā nānājanapadā māṇavakā āgacchanti bhoto soṇadaṇḍassa santike mantatthikā mante adhīyitukāmā. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo bahunnaṃ ācariyapācariyo, tīṇi māṇavasatāni mante vāceti. Bahū kho pana nānādisā nānājanapadā māṇavakā āgacchanti bhoto soṇadaṇḍassa santike mantatthikā mante adhīyitukāmā. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto. Samaṇo gotamo taruṇo ceva taruṇapabbajito ca. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto. Samaṇo gotamo taruṇo ceva taruṇapabbajito ca. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. 7 (17.) Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo rañño māgadhassa seniyassa bimbisārassa sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo rañño māgadhassa seniyassa bimbisārassa sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Bhavaṃ hi soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇassa pokkharasātissa sakkato garukato mānito pūjito apacito. Iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Yampi bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo campaṃ ajjhāvasati sattussadaṃ satiṇakaṭṭhodakaṃ sadhaññaṃ rājabhoggaṃ raññā māgadhena seniyena bimbisārena dinnaṃ rājadāyaṃ brahmadeyyaṃ, iminā paṅgena na arahati bhavaṃ soṇadaṇḍo samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamituṃ. Samaṇo tveva gotamo arahati bhavantaṃ soṇadaṇḍaṃ dassanāya upasaṅkamitunti. Sīlavā hoti vuddhasīlī vuddhasīlena samannāgato, paṇḍito ca hoti medhāvī, paṭhamo vā dutiyo vā sujaṃ paggaṇhantānaṃ. Imehi kho bho gotama pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgataṃ brāhmaṇā brāhmaṇaṃ paññāpenti. Brāhmaṇo’smīti ca vadamāno sammā vadeyya na ca pana musāvādaṃ āpajjeyyāti. Here/Venerable Gotama/a Brahmin is/from both sides/well-born, from the mother’s and father’s sides/of pure descent/up to the seventh generation of ancestors/not upset/blamless by parentage/a learned person/bearer of mystic verses/who went beyond the threevedas, along with vocabulary, the ritual/the ponology, etymology/then the history as the fifth/the words/the grammar/the popular philosophy/ (he) is handsome/good looking/pleasant/the most excellent caste distingtion and translation, the process of excellent complection/with the body like that of Mahābrahma/of no mean appearance/in this respect/ is virtues/ increasing the virtues/possesses with matured virtues/is wise/is scholar/the first or the second among the sacrificial ladle takers/ with these/Venerable Gotama/five qualities/ Brahmin/ declare as Brahmin. ‘Im a brahmin’ as speech being said/truth would speech/not false speech is/being produced (60.)16. \"Imesaṃ pana brāhmaṇa pañcannaṃ aṅgānaṃ sakkā ekaṃ aṅgaṃ ṭhapetvā catūhi aṅgehi samannāgataṃ brāhmaṇaṃ paññāpetuṃ brāhmaṇo’smīti ca vadamāno sammā vadeyya na ca pana musāvādaṃ āpajjeyyā?\"Ti. Atha kho soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo te brāhmaṇe etadavoca: \"passanti no bhonto imaṃ aṅgakaṃ māṇavakaṃ amhākaṃ bhāgineyyanti?\" At that time/Soṇdaṇḍa Brahmin’s nephew/Aṅgaka by name/a young man/in that retinue/was seated/then/Soṇadaṇḍa Brahmin/to those bramins/said as thus/ ‘don’t you see/gentlemets/Aṅgaka/the young man/our naphew? (71.) \"Evaṃ bho.” \"Aṅgako kho bho māṇavako abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato brahmavaṇṇī brahmavaccasī akkhuddāvakāso dassanāya. Nāssa imissaṃ parisāyaṃ samasamo atthi vaṇṇena, ṭhapetvā samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ. Yes, reverend/ ‘Aṅgaka/Gentlemen/the young man is handsome/good looking/amiablr/most excellent appearance/possessing of Brahma complextion, Brahma body/not appearing inferior/there is no/among this retinue/a coparible one with appearance/except the recluse Gotama/ (72.) Aṅgako kho bho māṇavako ajjhāyako mantadharo, tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkharappabhedānaṃ itihāsapañcamānaṃ. Padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Ahamassa mante vācetā. Na ca pana musāvādaṃ āpajjeyyā?\"Ti. Sīlapaññāṇaṃ ca pana lokasmiṃ aggamakkhāyati. Seyyathāpi bho gotama hatthena vā hatthaṃ dhoveyya pādena vā pādaṃ dhoveyya, evameva kho bho gotama sīlaparidhotā paññā, paññāparidhotaṃ sīlaṃ. Yattha sīlaṃ tattha paññā, yattha paññā tattha sīlaṃ. Sīlavato paññā, paññāvato sīlaṃ. Sīlapaññāṇañca pana lokasmiṃ aggamakkhāyati. 27 (79.) \"Katamaṃ pana taṃ brāhmaṇa sīlaṃ? Katamā sā paññā\"ti What is that/Brahmin/the vituous/What is that wisdom? (80.) \"Ettakaparamā’va mayaṃ bho gotama etasmiṃ atthe. Sādhu vata bhavantaṃyeva gotamaṃ paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho\"ti. We are not enough/Venerable Gotama/in this regard/It is good/Only you, Venerable Gotama/let explain/of this saying/meaning/ (81.) \"Tena hi brāhmaṇa suṇāhi, sādhukaṃ manasi karohi, bhāsissāmī\"ti. ’Evaṃ bho’ti kho soṇadaṇḍo brāhmaṇo bhagavato paccassosi. Bhagavā etadavoca: Therin Brahmin/listen/well remind in mind/will explain/ Yes/Venerable/as Soṇadaṇḍa Brahmin/to the Fortunate One replied/the Fortunate One said as thus/ (82.)25. \"Idha brāhmaṇa tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaṃ sammā sambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathī satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaṃ deseti ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. Here/Brahmin/ the Tathāgata/in the wolrd/arises/a Noble One/the Fully Enlightened One/ the processor of knowledge and conduct/the Well-gone-one/the knower of the world/the incomparable leader of men to be tamed/the teacher of god and men/the awakened/the Fortunate One/ He/this wolrd including the heaven, Māra and Brahm,recluse and Brahmin’s progeny/ that by himself/having well-realized/makes known/He/preaches the dhamma/which is beautiful in the beginning/beautiful in the middle/and beautifull in the end/with meaning/letters extremely complete/completely pure/chastity/declares/

28 (83.) Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti gahapati vā gahapatiputto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto. So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati. So tena saddhāpaṭilābhena samannāgato iti paṭisaṃcikkhati: ’sambādho gharāvāso rajāpatho. Abbhokāso pabbajjā. Nayidaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekantaparipuṇṇaṃ ekantaparisuddhaṃ saṃkhalikhitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ carituṃ. Yannūnāhaṃ kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyya’nti. That dhamma/listens/a house holder or/a son of the house holder/ a one later born in a certain family/He/that dhamma/having listened/on Tathāgata/confidence/obtains/He/possesses with that obtaining of the confidence/thus consideres/ preasure is the layman’s life/the path of dust/as free as air is having been ordained/it is not easy/by one who dwells in layman’s life/extremely completed/extremely pure/chastity/to practice/this I suppose/having shaved hair and beared/having dress up with yellow robes/leaving from house life/to homeless/and go forth to be ordained. (84.) So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya appaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati. So evaṃ pabbajito samāno pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī. Samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu kāyakammavacīkammena samannāgato kusalena. Parisuddhājīvo sīlasampanno indriyesu guttadvāro bhojane mattaññū satisampajaññesu samannāgato santuṭṭho. He/after a time/having given up a geart mass of wealth or little mass of wealth/having given up a large number of the cicle of relations or a small number of relations/having shaved hair and beared/having dress up the yellow robes/leaving from house to homeless life/ordains/ He/thus/having been ordained/ being restrained in highest perfect/lives/being perfect in conduct and suitable practice/seeing the danger avoid in even very little faults/having observed/practices in precepts/bodily action/verbal action/mental action/were endowed with wholesomeness/being perfect in morality in pure livelihood/controlling over in senses/ moderated in food/ endowded with mindfulness and clear comprehention/being contentment/ (85.) Kathañca brāhmaṇa bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti? Idha brāhmaṇa bhikkhu pāṇātipātaṃ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho lajjī dayāpanno. Sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. How does/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/observe the morality? Here/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/ destructingof life/being abandoned/from the destructingof life/ withought stick/without sword/being shameful/showing kindness/being a kind and sympathetic one/dwells. This is one of the morality

29 (86.) Adinnādānaṃ pahāya adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti dinnādāyī dinnapāṭikaṅkhī. Athenena sucibhūtena attanā virahati. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Taking of what is not given/being abandoned/from taking of what is not given/abstained/ taking what is given/expecting the giving/without stealing/with a pure mind/dwells. This is one of the morality (87.) Abrahmacariyaṃ pahāya brahmacārī hoti ārācārī virato methunā gāmadhammā. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Unchastity/ being abandoned/living far from evil/aloof from the village practice of sex/dwells. This is one of the moralties (88.) Musāvādaṃ pahāya musāvādā paṭivirato hoti saccavādī saccasandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. False speech/being abandoned/from false speech/abstained/a truth speaker/one to be relied on/trustworthy/dependable/being not deceitful to the world. This is one of moralities (89.) Pisuṇaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti. Ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya. Amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya. Iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā, sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā samaggārāmo samaggarato samagganandiṃ samaggakaraṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Slander speech/being abandoned/from slander speech/ abstained/having heard there/does not repeat here/ of these/disunion/From here/having heard of what said by these/does not repeat there/for disunion/thus/ of disunions/conceiler/ of those at one/encourager/a unity maker/a unity lover/a rejoice of unity/unity making word spoker/ This is one of the moralit (90.) Samphappalāpaṃ pahāya samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti kālavādī bhūtavādī atthavādī dhammavādī vinayavādī. Nidhānavatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyantavatiṃ atthasañhitaṃ. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Rude speech/being abandoned/from rude speech/abstained/whatever words without fault/pleasant to the ear/lovely/reaching to the heart/polite/pleasand to the many people/beloved by many people/such type of speech/speaks/ This is one if the moralities (91.) Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti. Yā sā vācā neḷā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā, tathārūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Seyyathīdaṃ: santikammaṃ paṇidhikammaṃ bhūtakammaṃ bhurikammaṃ vassakammaṃ vossakammaṃ vatthukammaṃ vatthuparikiraṇaṃ ācamanaṃ nahāpanaṃ juhanaṃ vamanaṃ virecanaṃ uddhavirecanaṃ adhovirecanaṃ sīsavirecanaṃ kaṇṇatelaṃ nettatappanaṃ natthukammaṃ añjanaṃ paccañjanaṃ sālākiyaṃ sallakattiyaṃ dārakatikicchā mūlabhesajjānaṃ anuppadānaṃ osadhīnaṃ paṭimokkho. Iti vā itievarūpāya tiracchānavijjāya micchājīvā paṭivirato hoti. Idampi’ssa hoti sīlasmiṃ. Sa kho so brāhmaṇa bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. Seyyathāpi mahārāja khattiyo muddhāvasitto nihatapaccāmitto na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ paccatthikato, evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu evaṃ sīlasampanno na kutoci bhayaṃ samanupassati yadidaṃ sīlasaṃvarato. So iminā ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajjasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Evaṃ kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti. 39 (112.) Kathañca brāhmaṇa bhikkhu indriyesu guttadvāro hoti? Idha mahārāja bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ cakkhundriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Rakkhati cakkhundriyaṃ cakkhundriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ sotindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Rakkhati sotindriyaṃ sotindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Ghāṇena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ ghānindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Rakkhati ghānindriyaṃ ghānindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ jivhindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Rakkhati jivhindriyaṃ jivhindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phusitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ kāyindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Rakkhati kāyindriyaṃ kāyindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ manindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvassaveyyuṃ tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati. Samiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti. Saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti. Asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī hoti. Uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī hoti. Gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti. Evaṃ kho mahārāja bhikkhu satisampajaññena samannāgato hoti. Idha mahārāja bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihāriyena cīvarena kucchiparihāriyena piṇḍapātena. So yena yeneva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati. Seyyathāpi mahārāja pakkhi sakuṇo yena yeneva ḍeti sapattabhāro’va ḍeti, evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihāriyena cīvarena kucchiparihāriyena piṇḍapātena. So yena yeneva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati. Evaṃ kho mahārāja bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti. How/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/is a contended? So iminā ca ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena satisampajaññena samannāgato imāya ca ariyāya santuṭṭhiyā samannāgato vivittaṃ senāsanaṃ bhajati araññaṃ rukkhamūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhaṃ susānaṃ vanapatthaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ. So pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇīdhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya vigatābhijjhena cetasā viharati. Abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti. Byāpādapadosaṃ pahāya abyāpannacitto viharati sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī. Byāpādapadosā cittaṃ parisodheti. Thīnamiddhaṃ pahāya vigatathīnamiddho viharati ālokasaññī sato sampajāno. Thīnamiddhā cittaṃ parisodheti. Uddhaccakukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati ajjhattaṃ vūpasannacitto. Uddhaccakukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti. Vicikicchaṃ pahāya tiṇṇavicikiccho viharati akathaṃkathī kusalesu dhammesu. Vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojeyya, tassa te kammantā samijjheyyuṃ, so yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantīkareyya, siyā cassa uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāya, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe iṇaṃ ādāya kammante payojesiṃ. tassa me te kammantā samijjhiṃsu. So’haṃ yāni ca porāṇāni iṇamūlāni tāni ca byantī akāsiṃ. Atthi ca me uttariṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ dārabharaṇāyā\"ti. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso ābādhiko assa dukkhito bāḷhagilāno, bhattaṃ cassa nacchādeyya, na cassa kāye balamattā, so aparena samayena tamhā ābādhā mucceyya, bhattañcassa chādeyya, siyā cassa kāye balamattā, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe ābādhiko ahosiṃ dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Bhattaṃ ca me nacchādesi. Nacassa me āsi kāye balamattā. So’mhi etarahi tamhā ābādhā mutto bhattañca me chādeti. Atthi ca me kāye balamattā\"ti. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso bandhanāgāre baddho assa, so aparena samayena tamhā bandhanāgārā mucceyya sotthinā abbayena, na cassa kiñci bhogānaṃ vayo, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe bandhanāgāre baddho ahosiṃ. So’mhi etarahi tamhā bandhanāgārā mutto sotthinā abbayena. Natthi ca me kiñci bhogānaṃ vayo\"ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - Just as/Brahmin/a person/in the jail/ might be put/he/after a time/from that jail/released well/with alive/there was no loss of his wealths/it occurs in him as “I/before/in jail/was put/I/now/from that jail/was released well/with alive/there is no any loss of my wealths”/ He/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness”

Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso dāso assa anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo, so aparena samayena tamhā dāsabyā mucceyya attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe dāso ahosiṃ anattādhīno parādhīno na yenakāmaṅgamo, so’mhi etarahi tamhā dāsabyā mutto attādhīno aparādhīno bhujisso yenakāmaṅgamo\"ti. So tatonidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ, adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - Just as/Brahmin/a person might be a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to gowhere he wishes to go/he/after a time/from that slavery status/would release/being a self dependent not being a dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever he wishes to go/it occurs him as “I/before/was a slave/not a self dependent but a dependent on others/not be able to go wherever I wish to go/that I/now/from that slavery status/am free/a self dependent but not dependent on others/being a freed slave/go wherever wish to go”. He/ as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” (121.) Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhānamaggaṃ paṭipajjeyya dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭibhayaṃ. So aparena samayena taṃ kantāraṃ nitthareyya, sotthinā gāmantaṃ anupāpuṇeyya khemaṃ appaṭibhayaṃ, tassa evamassa: \"ahaṃ kho pubbe sadhano sabhogo kantāraddhānamaggaṃ paṭipajjiṃ dubbhikkhaṃ sappaṭibhayaṃ. So’mhi etarahi taṃ kantāraṃ tiṇṇo sotthinā gāmantaṃ anuppatto khemaṃ appaṭibhaya\"nti. So tato nidānaṃ labhetha pāmojjaṃ adhigaccheyya somanassaṃ - Just as/Brahmin/a person/along with the money and wealth/to the desert road/might be get/which is femine/is dangerous/he/after a time/that desert/would pass through well/to a village/would arrive/which is free/no dangerous/to him/it occurs as “I/before/along with money and wealth/to the desert road/was got in/which a femine/is dangerous/that’s me/now/that desert have corsses well/to the village/have arrived/which is free/which has no danger/he/as a cause of that/gains the happiness/receives the happiness” (122.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu yathā guṇaṃ yathā rogaṃ yathā bandhanāgāraṃ yathā dāsabyaṃ yathā kantāraddhānamaggaṃ evaṃ ime pañca nīvaraṇe appahīṇe attani samanupassati. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa ānaṇyaṃ yathā ārogyaṃ yathā bandhanā mokkhaṃ yathā bhujissaṃ yathā khemantabhūmiṃ evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassati. 44 (123.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu yathā guṇaṃ yathā rogaṃ yathā bandhanāgāraṃ yathā dāsabyaṃ yathā kantāraddhānamaggaṃ evaṃ ime pañca nīvaraṇe appahīṇe attani samanupassati. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa ānaṇyaṃ yathā ārogyaṃ yathā bandhanā mokkhaṃ yathā bhujissaṃ yathā khemantabhūmiṃ evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahīṇe attani samanupassati. So vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ vivekajena pītisukhena abhisanteti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa vivekajena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 45 (127.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ vivekajena pītisukhena abhisanneti parisanneti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa vivekajena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ samādhijena pītisukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa samādhijena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Again/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/separating one’s self from desires/being separated from unwholesome/accompanied by reasoning/accompanied by investigation/arose by the freedom/happiness of delight/to the second absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/originated by concentration/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothingin in whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/ (129.) Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa udakarahado gambīro ubbhidodako, tassa nevassa puratthimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na dakkhiṇāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na pacchimāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, na uttarāya disāya udakassa āyamukhaṃ, devo ca na kālena kālaṃ sammā dhāraṃ anupaveccheyya, atha kho tamhā ca udakarahadā sītā vāridhārā ubbhijjitvā tameva udakarahadaṃ sītena vārinā abhisandeyya parisandeyya paripūreyya paripphareyya, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato udakarahadassa vārinā sītena apphuṭaṃ assa – Just as/Brahmin/a lake of water/deep/springing up/nowhere/at souther direction/of the water/entrance/nowhere at/western direction/of water/entrance/nowhere at/northern direction/of water/entrance/the rain/does not/in right time/proper rain water/suppy/but/from that same lake of water/cool/torrents of water/having spring up/that same late of water/with cool water/would flow out/would flow round/would complete/would pervade/there is nothing in whole/of the torrents of water/by cool water/untouched/

46 (130.) Evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ samādhijena pītisukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa samādhijena pītisukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. As same as/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/ this very body/originated by concentration/with the gladness of happiness/is filled/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothingin whole body/originated by rest/by gladness of happiness/is untouched/ (131.) Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti. Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukhavihārīti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti, parippharati nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Again/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/from the gladness/being abstained/ being an equal/dwells/being mindfull and aware/happiness/with body/experiences/What him/noble persons/call:One who is equanimity mindfulness/is dwelling with happiness/to third absorption/having attained/dwells/ He/this very body/with happiness without gladness/is filled up/is filled around/is made more complete/is more pervaded/there is nothing in whole body/with happiness without gladness/is untouched (132.) Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa uppaliniyaṃ vā paduminiyaṃ vā puṇḍarīkiniyaṃ vā appekaccāni uppalāni vā padumāni vā puṇḍarīkāni vā udake jātāni udake saṃvaddhāni udakānuggatāni antonimuggaposīni tāni yāva caggā yāva ca mūlā sītena vārinā abhisannāni parisannāni paripūrāni, paripphuṭāni nāssā kiñci sabbāvataṃ uppalānaṃ vā padumānaṃ vā puṇḍarīkānaṃ vā sītena vārinā apphuṭaṃ assa. Just as/Brāhmin/in a pond of waterlily pond/or in a pond of red lotus/ or in a pond of white lotus/or in some another pond/waterlilies or/red lotuese or/whote lotuses or/those who are born in the water/gorwing up in the water/not growing out of the water/are fed from the water’s depths/those waterlilies/red lotuses/white lotuses/as far as the very tips/as far as the roots/with cool water/overflow/arefilled up/are filled round/are mademore complete/are more pervaded/there is nothing for whole/waterlilies/red and whilte lotuese/with the cool water/untouched/ (133.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ nippītikena sukhena abhisandeti parisandeti paripūreti parippharati. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa nippītikena sukhena apphuṭaṃ hoti. 47 (134.) Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṃ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Again/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/having given up happiness/having given pain/with the disappearance of former gladness and pain of mind/neither pan nor happiness/purified by equanimity and mindfulness/to the fourth absorption/having attained/dwells/he/this very body/with purified mental clarification/having pervade/sits/There is nothing in whole/of the body/with purified mental clarification/is untouched (135.) Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso odātena vatthena sasīsaṃ pārupitvā nisinno assa, nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa odātena vatthena apphuṭaṃ assa, evameva kho mahārāja bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena pharitvā nisinno hoti. Nāssa kiñci sabbāvato kāyassa parisuddhena cetasā pariyodātena apphuṭaṃ hoti. Just as/Brahmin/a person/with a white cloth/his head/having covered/sits/there is nothing/of body/with a white cloth/is untouched/as same as/Great King/a bhikkhu/ this very body/with purified mental clarification/having pervade/sits/There is nothing in whole/of the body/with purified mental clarification/is untouched/ (136.) Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa so bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte ñāṇadassanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. So evaṃ pajānāti: \"ayaṃ kho me kāyo rūpī cātummahābhūtiko mātāpettikasambhavo odanakummāsūpacayo aniccucchādanaparimaddanabhedaviddhaṃsanadhammo. Idaṃ ca pana me viññāṇaṃ ettha sitaṃ ettha paṭibaddha’nti. Again/Brahmin/that bhikkhu/when thus/in a concentrated mind/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to knowing and seeing/the mind/direct/bends forward/He/thus/knows/this/my body/is a form/is a made of four great elements/is originated from mather and father/is continually renewed by so much boiled rice and juicy food/if beaing impermanent/ rubbing/breaking/shattering/conditions/This my consciousness is/in this place/attached it/

Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato accho vippasanno anāvilo sabbākārasampanno, tatra’ssa suttaṃ āvutaṃ nīlaṃ vā pītaṃ vā lohitaṃ vā odātaṃ vā paṇḍusuttaṃ vā. Tamenaṃ cakkhumā puriso hatthe karitvā paccavekkheyya \"ayaṃ kho maṇi veḷuriyo subho jātimā aṭṭhaṃso suparikammakato, accho vippasanno anāvilo sabbākārasampanno. Tatiradaṃ suttaṃ āvutaṃ nīlaṃ vā pītaṃ vā lohitaṃ vā odātaṃ vā paṇḍusuttaṃ vā\"ti. Just as/Brahmin/a gem/a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/It is this/a person with bright eyesight/on hand/having put/observes as ‘this gem is/ a lapis lazuli/pure/a right/with eight facets/well worked/very purified/unflawed/excellent in every aspect/that string upon/with dark-blue or yellow/or red/or white/or gray threads/ (138.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte ñāṇadassanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. 49 (140.) Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa puriso muñjamhā isikaṃ pavāheyya. Tassa evamassa: ayaṃ muñjo ayaṃ isikā añño muñjo aññā isikā muñjamhātveva isikā pavāḷhāti. Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja puriso asiṃ kosiyā pavāheyya. Tassa evamassa: \"ayaṃ asi ayaṃ kosi, añño asi aññā kosi, kosiyātveva asi pavāḷho\"ti. Seyyathāpi vā pana mahārāja puriso ahiṃ karaṇḍā uddhareyya. Tassa evamassa: \"ayaṃ ahi ayaṃ karaṇḍo, añño ahi añño karaṇḍo, karaṇḍātveva ahi ubbhato\"ti Just as/Brahmin/a person/from the sheath/the reed/draws out/It occurs to him/this is sheath/this is reed/one is the sheath/one is the reed/from sheath/just reed/pulled out/Just as/Great King/a person/a sword/from the scabbard/draws out/it occurs to him/this is the sword/this is the scabbard/one is the sword/one is the scabbard/from scabbard/just sword/is taken out/ Just as/Great King/a person/a snake/from its slough/take out/it occurs to him/this is the snake/this is the slough/one is the snake/one is the slough/from the slough/just the snake/is taken out (141.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudrabhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte manomayaṃ kāyaṃ abhinimminanāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. So imamhā kāyā aññaṃ kāyaṃ abhinimmināti rūpiṃ manomayaṃ sabbaṅgapaccaṅgiṃ ahīnindriyaṃ. As same as/Brahmin/a bhikkhu/ when thus/the mind is concentrated mind/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/to creat a mindmaded body/the mind/leads/bends forward/he/from this body/another body/creat/a form/which is mind maded/along with all limbs and faculties/ (142.) So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatupakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte iddhividhāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti. so anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhoti: eko’pi hutvā bahudhā hoti bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti, āvībhāvaṃ tirobhāvaṃ tirokuḍḍaṃ tiropākāraṃ tiropabbataṃ asajjamāno gacchati seyyathāpi ākāse, paṭhaviyā’pi ummujjanimujjaṃ karoti seyyathāpi udake, udake’pi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathāpi paṭhaviyaṃ, ākāse’pi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathā’pi pakkhi sakuṇo. Ime’pi candimasuriye evaṃmahiddhike evaṃmahānubhāve pāṇinā parāmasati parimajjati. Yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṃ vatteti. He/thus/when the mind is concentrated/purified/very clean/passionless/free from defilements/malleable/ready to act/imperturbable/for psychic power/mind/leads/beds forward/He/various psychic power/experiences/He/being one/becomes many/becoming many/he becomes/one/becoming visible/becoming invisible/going through the fence/going through the wall/going through the mountain/unattachedly/goes/just as through the air/in earth/rising up/diving in/he does/just as in the water/even in the water/being not sinking/he goes/just as on earth/even on the sky/sitting cross-leged/he travels just as the winged bird/Both moon and sun/so potent though they be/so mighty though they be/with his hand/touches/strokes/as far as the world of celestials/with the body that he exercises power/

50 (143.)73. Seyyathāpi brāhmaṇa dakkho kumbhakāro vā kumbhakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatāya mattikāya yaṃ yadeva bhājanavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya – Seyyathāpi vā pana brāhmaṇa dakkho dantakāro vā dantakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṃ dantasmiṃ yaṃ yadeva dantavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya – Seyyathāpi vā pana brāhmaṇa dakkho suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṃ suvaṇṇasmiṃ yaṃ yadeva suvaṇṇavikatiṃ ākaṅkheyya taṃ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya – Just as/Brahmin/a skilled potter or/potter’s attendant/with well-prepared clay/whatever/bowl shape/could design/that can make/that can produce/ Just as/Brahmin/a skilled invory-worker or/invery-worker’s attendant/in well-prepared invory task/whatever/ivory-shape/would wish to make/as it/can make/can produce Just as/Brahmin/a skilled goldsmith or/goldsmith’s attendant/with well-prepared gold/whatever gold-shap/would wish to make/as it is/can make/can produce (144.) Evameva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhu evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte iddhividhāya cittaṃ abhinīharati abhininnāmeti.
