School crest The elements within the School Crest signify the essence of Gateway College. The colours used in the Crest have significance of their own: Blue and Grey signify School colours; Red represents power and energy; and White represents purity. The two Sri Lankan Lions holding the shield depict courage and bravery, and represent the Sri Lankan identity of the School. The Golden Eagle represents the School’s highest award in sports. The Globe signifies international education, while the Arrow represents Gateway’s advancement in technology. The Book depicts knowledge, while the Torch signifies enlightenment. The three Interwoven Squares represent teamwork and a sense of belonging between Parent, Teacher, and Student, whereas the three colours of the diagonals, Orange, Green, and Maroon, signify the Communities of Sri Lanka and identify the School as being multi-ethnic and multi-religious. In 2018, Gateway chose to replace the dove in the Crest with the Golden Eagle. The Eagle is unwilling to accept the status quo, instead opting to reach higher and become more than it believes it is capable of. Annual Review 2018 5

School houses School Houses are named in the order of the first four Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka: Don Stephen Senanayake, Dudley Shelton Senanayake, Sir John Lionel Kotelawala, and Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike. The choice of names of such distinguished personalities underlines the emphasis laid by the school in developing an affinity to the motherland and acting with a sense of responsibility to her children. This is also a way of signifying the respect the school affords to statesmen who have left an indelible mark on our society and for their individual contribution to defining the spirit of Sri Lankans. Mascot The Lion in the School Crest, holding the shield, standing for bravery and our Sri Lankan heritage, along with the Golden Eagle, constitute the School’s mascot: the “Gateway Griffin”. The mascot is a legendary creature famed for its intelligence, power, honesty, discipline, and majesty, combining the King of the Beasts and the King of all Birds. Annual Review 2018 11
The history of Gateway Gateway College was founded by Ralph Ignatius Thomas Alles, a visionary dedicated to the cause of the education of the Nation. Educated at St. Aloysius’ College, Galle and St. Anthony’s College, Kandy, R I T Alles gained national recognition as the founding father of D S Senanayake College, Colombo, one of Sri Lanka’s leading educational institutions. Prior to the founding of Gateway College, R I T Alles received training from the Cambridge Institute of Education, served as a teacher at Royal College, Colombo, Principal of Zahira College, Colombo, and as State Secretary of Education. Today, Gateway College embodies R I T Alles’ belief of providing holistic education and moulding students who are international in nature, but Sri Lankan at heart. His ethos and philosophy are embedded in our vision and mission. 12 Gateway College

Leadership Dedicated to carrying forward the vision and legacy of our founder, Mr R I T Alles Annual Review 2018 17
“Experience is the mother of wisdom and experience without learning is more beneficial than learning with no experience.” 18 Gateway College
Chairman's message Looking at the world around us, never have we felt the need for better leaders than we do today. The need for wise thought and selfless action is more crucial than ever before. A great mantle rests on the next generation as they prepare to take on leadership roles in many spheres. When considering leaders, it is important to recognise that the most successful leaders are not always the most qualified nor are they the least qualified. However, they are all visionaries, ethical and committed to their tasks. They are those who are aware of the world around them: Those who understand the society they live in. Schools should be places of learning; learning in its fullest sense. They should be places that effect a change in an individual’s knowledge or behaviour due to experience. Graduates who enter society will then be resilient and steadfast. The instructions they receive in school will enable them to adapt successfully to any environment, without compromising their own integrity. Schools are duty-bound to teach students about their environment and foster situational understanding. Moreover, students must be equipped with the skill to make intelligent, accurate judgements, not only about their surroundings and the personalities around them but about themselves too. Schools must simulate life and thereby produce street-smart graduates. It is prudent to remember that experience is the mother of wisdom and experience without learning is more beneficial than learning with no experience. As a school, we consider it our duty to provide experiences which prepare students for the tasks, tests, and trials of life. A common belief among the public in Sri Lanka is that international school students are far removed from society; that they are disconnected from their local culture and traditions. To mitigate the problem, we must create opportunities for students to mingle with all sectors in society. They must be encouraged to collaborate with others from all walks of life; senior students should be exposed to geopolitical issues pertaining to their motherland. It is important that students know and understand where they come from, as much as they focus on where they want to be. Dr Harsha Alles Chairman Annual Review 2018 19
