King, Mollie: Biophilia

Published by Mollie King, 2023-06-07 01:39:12

Description: My name is Mollie and I am a photographer, painter, and student from Oakland, California– a dense and diverse city across the bridge from San Francisco. Through a collaboration of my own photos, drawings, and materials drawn from academic studies at UCSD, I explore the intersectionality between human cultures and our environment in my climate zine: Biophilia. The term Biophilia means a love for life and living things. As humans, we have an intuitive love for nature that spans across all disciplines: art, architecture, technology, fashion, medicine, and so on. Flipping through the pages of my zine, I hope to inspire an intersectional interaction with nature through art, photography, education, and the consummation of media because the truth is: we are inseparable from our environment. Even in the skyscraper city I call home, I feel nature’s presence. As devastating climate grief and struggles close in on our daily lives, I encourage you to consider the power of Biophilia, of love.

UCSD ENVIRONMENT

UCSD ENVIRONMENT Going to school with the beach only a ten minute walk down the road and the city only thirty minutes on transit allows me to recognize the interrelatedness of my studies with both the natural environment and our societal one. For example, Conotoxins are being studied and examined right here in our oceans, on our coast. Their benefits as painkillers are being used just miles away at San Diego's most prominent hospitals.
