King, Mollie: Biophilia

Published by Mollie King, 2023-06-07 01:39:12

Description: My name is Mollie and I am a photographer, painter, and student from Oakland, California– a dense and diverse city across the bridge from San Francisco. Through a collaboration of my own photos, drawings, and materials drawn from academic studies at UCSD, I explore the intersectionality between human cultures and our environment in my climate zine: Biophilia. The term Biophilia means a love for life and living things. As humans, we have an intuitive love for nature that spans across all disciplines: art, architecture, technology, fashion, medicine, and so on. Flipping through the pages of my zine, I hope to inspire an intersectional interaction with nature through art, photography, education, and the consummation of media because the truth is: we are inseparable from our environment. Even in the skyscraper city I call home, I feel nature’s presence. As devastating climate grief and struggles close in on our daily lives, I encourage you to consider the power of Biophilia, of love.

LOVE RADICALLY Sarah Corbett does activism in a quiet, humble and intriguing way using handicrafts. Radical love comes in many forms. One vital way to show appreciation for the environment is through protest. Sarah Corbett is a \"craftivist\" who teaches her \"gentle protest\" approach to individuals and organizations around the world. “Corbett shows us a new way to fight for a better world without resorting to violence or empty social media posts -- and calls on us all to reconsider our approach to communicating and living. This is a message that deserves to be widely heard, particularly in these polarized times.” — Gillian Tett, US Managing Editor, The Financial Times

LOVE RADICALLY I show radical love through visual expression, attempting to emulate Earth’s varieties of colors and patterns in my own artwork and renditions of natural beauty.

LOVE RADICALLY Layering the Landscape: We are forever reminded of the history of earth through the dirt underneath our feet. Focusing INDIVIDUALLY on the details and beauty of the old mountains and then the rolling hills all the way down to the light foliage of the seasonal creeks allows me to love the landscape in its entirety.

LOVE RADICALLY \" AND SO I SAY TO ALL OF YOU: THE EARTH DOES NOT EXPECT YOU TO SAVE HER, SHE EXPECTS YOU TO RESPECT HER. AND WE, AS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, EXPECT THE SAME. \" \"Waorani leader Nemonte Nenquimo shows evidence of crude oil contamination in the northern Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. LOVE RADICALLY \" Dear presidents of the nine Amazonian countries and to all world leaders that share responsibility for the plundering of our rainforest, My name is Nemonte Nenquimo. I am a Waorani woman, a mother, and a leader of my people. The Amazon rainforest is my home. I am writing you this letter because the fires are raging still. Because the corporations are spilling oil in our rivers. Because the miners are stealing gold (as they have been for 500 years), and leaving behind open pits and toxins. Because the land grabbers are cutting down primary forest so that the cattle can graze, plantations can be grown and the white man can eat. Because our elders are dying from coronavirus, while you are planning your next moves to cut up our lands to stimulate an economy that has never benefited us. Because, as Indigenous peoples, we are fighting to protect what we love – our way of life, our rivers, the animals, our forests, life on Earth – and it’s time that you listened to us. \" Nemonte Nenquimo 12 Oct. 2020

DICHOTOMY The Port of Oakland, filled with container ships and cargo vessels, bustling with trucks, trains, cranes and heavy machinery...

DICHOTOMY ... Belted Kingfishers and American Coots, Peregrine Falcons, Perch and Small Rockfish, with seaweeds and grasses that line the bay's shores, The Port of Oakland.

DICHOTOMY

DICHOTOMY A dirty city fighting drug abuse, polluted streets, with homeless encampments lining the sidewalk and crime and burglary eating away at small businesses like a disease. The streets at night are unsafe. A vibrant city with the BEST mexican-american food in all of the United States, rich with culture and talent: a home to people from all races, ethnicities and backgrounds. The block parties are lit. A green city with community gardens where vegetables grow and there are pocket parks with benches around every corner. Redwoods shield the city on one side and bay water blankets it on the other. The cracks in the sidewalks have clovers in them. Three very different cities are one in the same: My home.

DICHOTOMY

DICHOTOMY Port View Park is where I take my little brother to play catch in Oakland. Even though it's located at a hub for industrial trade, I find the natural beauty of the bay to be relaxing.

DICHOTOMY

DICHOTOMY “To separate the concerns of the human world (politics, history, commerce) from those of the many life forms with which humans share this planet strikes me as disastrous hubris and folly. We live in community with all the other lives on Earth, whether we acknowledge this or not. When we write about our lives, we ought to do so with an awareness of the other lives we encounter as we move through the world” - Camille T. Dungy Is All Writing Environmental Writing?
