An Epistle by the President Message The richness of Indian Culture has universal acceptance. The multifaceted system of education that existed in India has undergone changes. Contemporary development spins over several centuries without transforming the core of Indian philosophy. And, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan we reach out to the student community to excel in both academic and co-curricular activities giving impetus to human values raising them to be responsible citizen of the countries they live. This is unique to Bhavans’. The Bhavans’ institution both in India and abroad are committed to imparting quality education. The Bhavan’s School in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE have been playing an important role in the Middle East by providing quality education. We wish all the students a bright career ahead. We take this opportunity to greet our teachers and the parents of our students. 6th January, 2021 (SURENDRALAL G. MEHTA) PRESIDENT Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Mar, Mumbai-400 007, Email: [email protected], Web: http://www.bhavans.info, Fax: 022-23630058 3

This includes providing every child the maximum opportunity to excel in academics and creativity. Our continued efforts to orient our pedagogy system by adopting state of art methods, foreseeing global needs and equipping the students with multidisciplinary tasks have succeeded enormously in laying a strong foundation among the students to be successful in every stride of their academic career. We wish our students at the Bhavans’ Schools in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE a bright future. 3rd January, 2021 H.N.Dastur (Executive Secretary & Director General) Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Mar, Mumbai-400 007, Email: [email protected], Web: http://www.bhavans.info, Fax: 022-23630058 4

An Epistle by the Chairman 50, 40, 30, or even 20 years back – children were focused on age appropriate matters – be it their education and cultural activities in school, responsibilities at home or the social community they lived in. Character building was the essence in school and at home. Individual satisfaction and personal needs were not given importance or priorities. The change from then to now is visible at every home. The attitude of parents and children at every home – then and now is far different from the way it was back then. Change is necessary and even mandated as generations pass. But we as a school, believe that culture and values should remain the same and be the solid foundation of every home for generations. During the last 15 years of my 24/7 involvement with children, parents and teachers, I am really surprised or in fact more saddened to see the current level of attitude of children from class 3 onwards. May be I belong to an older generation or still continue with the old school of thoughts. But I believe many of the children are diverting from their proper path, and chasing things that are not age appropriate, and not at all necessary in these years of their career. This will ultimately lead to more children being trapped in a whirlwind of activities and emotions that divert their attentions and focus from matters most essential to set their future on track. Many of the children are in the trap. I am very sure that as a parent you belong to one of these parent groups – either the ‘trapped’, or the possibly ‘going to be trapped’. During several interactions with parents it has come to my notice that there are a number of instances where children lack respect, cases where they retort and answer back, and yell at, when even the slightest or basic questions are asked at home, but the very same child was obedient and mostly well behaved at school. Yesterday I heard from my senior leadership team that grade 8 children have started answering back to Principal and Vice Principals. In the last couple of months, I have seen lots of such unhealthy incidents which warrant the parents’ immediate intervention. I am sure many parents are experiencing the same, or similar situations at home, as well. Our children grow physically and they may be aware of many more things than necessary for their age because of increased social media presence – but their emotional responsibility level is still that of a child and not of an adult. They need to understand the impact of their words and actions, and take responsibility for the effects of the same. At Bhavans’ we believe in character building which is the foundation of any child for a better tomorrow, better future. Education will follow automatically. Parents are requested to communicate with the senior management team of the school as and when necessary to discuss the progress of their children in all matters of their growth or when you feel there is a visible change in child’s attitude and behavior. Let us work together for a better tomorrow. Trust us, we are with you. N K Ramachandran Middle East Chairman 5

An Epistle by the Vice Chairman Dear Students / Teachers / Parents, It gives me immense pleasure to contribute to this issue of our Annual School Magazine. Each year, the school magazine outlines the progress that the school has made during the previous academic year and recapitulates all events, showcasing the various activities of the school. This year has passed swiftly in a blur of achievements and accomplishments, and I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to all those who have worked hard to ensure that the magazine remains a treasure trove of memories. To me, the magazine will always be an event-filled journal, chronicling another exciting year that will be cherished by our students in the years to come. Through this magazine, I would like to greet all the stake holders of our school family. As a school, something that we have always believed in is, Home is the first school and school is the second home. This has come so true today with COVID19. As we continue to wrestle with the implications of the situation, homes and how our children learn have become far more important than it may ever have been. In March, when things started to fall out of place and we were forced to get ourselves prepared for facets of our life that we had never encountered and when homes were where the action moved to – learn from home, teach from home, work from home, assessments from home – I think the one thing we at Bhavans realized was that – this is going to take some time. As is often said, it is always better to use a compass over a map to navigate a world of uncertainty. We realized we needed to block the negatives out and think like a monk on how we wanted to take the academic year forward. We knew we didn’t want to sit around and wait for things to unfold, but rather we wanted to make things happen. Unfortunately, when we are a school and when there is a little chaos around and when we have impressionable minds looking at the school to see what will happen next – it leaves very little margin for the school to be unprepared and to seem unsettled. As far as we as a school was concerned, it was our topmost priority to give the confidence that things would be as normal as they could and we would continue to do what we do. That is teach – educate – provide opportunities – allow children to have their fun and much more – all while they continued to trod the path to be a Global Citizen. A disruption shouldn’t have to stop that march. We have always told parents in our school that we are keen on guiding children into the future who will be passionate about their work and who will want to strive to make a difference in whatever they do and will stay the course in a very uncertain world. True – we did improvise – like building our partnership with parents and children and getting them to correct answer papers based on our marking schemes thereby building mutual trust and honesty, being a little flexible with our time tables and increasing the class duration which gave teachers and children that little time to adapt and adjust to the online platform, continue with the numerous activities – song / dance / music all online for children, do virtual summer camps, virtual sports days, class photo sessions with children sitting at home and of course the school annual day. We were always conscious that these uncertain times would pass and would never be permanent and when our children and teachers come back to school, they wouldn’t realise that there was one year of the so called ‘new normal’. Our team of teachers at Bhavans has ensured that we stayed the course and remained committed to our task and in the process also ensured that we paid attention to not only the small things but also the bigger things like mental, physical and emotional well being of our teachers and students and ensuring that we all remained healthy and happy. As we turn the corner and start to see the glimpse of hope that sooner rather than later, we are all going to get back to, as a school we can be rest assured that our teachers have done and are doing their best to keep our children engaged and active as we all navigate and turn the corner. We may still not have reached the end of the roller coaster ride but we can take pride in the fact that we have reached the top of a mountain even if that maybe the bottom of the next one. In this regard, BHAVANS owes much to its dynamic leadership whose untiring efforts have resulted in the overall development of the School. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our staff members for their dedication and hard work that has ensured that our flag is always flying high. Kudos to the parents and children for travelling together with us and making sure that we ended the Academic year on a high. I pray that the Almighty God continues to bless all of us and help us get through this very difficult times. Signing off with a variation of an inspired Quote of Albert Einstein – At Bhavans, we don’t teach our children. We create conditions for Sooraj Ramachandran them to learn. Thank You Once Again. Vice Chairman 6

An Epistle by the Director Dear Readers, Life throws countless hurdles and the goal of education is to help one to courageously sail through the rough seas of struggle and strides. The perseverance to face the battles of life needs strong pillars of character and strong will, especially when we face hard times, it is all the more important that we remain balanced and focused on what matters to us. COVID 19 and confinement to one’s home was one such challenge that we all had to go through in the year 2020. Everything came to stand still in February. Life seemed difficult; but soon a ray of hope was visualised by BIS Management as our talented team came up with an action plan within no time. The horrendous challenge of continuing the education in COVID Pandemic situation was bravely faced by Bahrain Indian School family. In-fact, the pandemic never become a hurdle in sustaining Quality Education. The endless possibilities of digital platforms were used in an optimum way to sustain a congenial and growth mindset learning environment in virtual classrooms. The new normal paved the way for commencing new initiatives and conducting activities in more creative way. Students were provided with new attainable challenges through virtual medium. Co-curricular activities like Physical Education, Art, Life Skills and Music Classes were carried out virtually along with scholastic subjects in more creative ways. Theme based special assemblies/activities and major events of the year like Investiture Ceremony, Science & Art Exhibition, Annual Award Day etc. were also conducted virtually in new innovative ways. ‘Bhavanodaya – an Inter school singing, mono acting, and fancy-dress competition, BISQ – Inter school Quiz competition were also conducted successfully with large student participation. To give an edge to the reading habits among students, E-library was introduced wherein the students can read their favourite books during their leisure time. The writers of BIS penned their stories and the collection of stories titled ‘BIS Wordsmiths’ was published. Above all the school is to releasing its ‘Annual School Magazine’ digitally which will be a showcase of students’ creative works for the past one year. The major achievement of the year was getting CBSE Affiliation up to Grade XII and commencement of the first batch of Grade XI classes in all steams - Science, Commerce and Humanities. Varieties of subject combinations are offered to suit the individual interest of the students. Facilities for regular Career Counselling, Integrated coaching to prepare students for various competitive examinations like IIT- JEE, NEET, SAT and the availability of admission experts to support students with their University Applications make BIS the most sought – after school in the Kingdom. At the juncture, I would like to thank all the parents who have been cooperative in these hard times. Let me assure you that our teachers are readily prepared to accommodate themselves as well as the students with anything emerging new in the educational world. I entreat the Almighty to shower His blessings in plenty upon the staff and students of the school in their efforts. “All human wisdom is summed up in these two words- wait and hope.”- Emily Dickinson So let's hope that good times will come and we get to hear the twittering of your young ones on the school premises very soon. Stay Safe and Stay Connected! Ms. Ritu Verma Director 7

From the Desk of Principal “All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us have equal opportunity to develop our talent.” Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam The academic year 2020-21 started with uncertainty and anxiety but we stood together firmly and have overcome the challenging year as a normal academic year. We carried out all the activities virtually, be it investiture ceremony, celebrations, competitions (intra school as well as inter school), Annual Award ceremony, Science and Art Exhibition, Graduation Day and many more. All the events kicked off the way they were planned and finally we are here with the 6th Edition of our Annual Magazine ‘Bhavanubhav’ 2020-21. It is rightly said, “From tiny seeds, grow mighty trees.” At BIS, every day we plant tiny seeds of hope within our children and help them to grow into strong adults with deep roots that are sunk into the soil of self-confidence, strong values and beliefs. We feed them with the nutrients of knowledge and character so that they can bloom with creativity and curiosity. To think intensively and critically and to explore creative thinking; students need ample opportunities. In our efforts to promote creativity and opportunity, we bring to you the sixth edition Bhavanubhav. We will witness the creativity and perfect strutting of various talents of our budding authors and artists. Garnering all the resources, compiling them as well as presenting them before you need a lot of efforts. By bringing out this magazine, the students have proven their mettle that they are capable of taking up any difficult and challenging task if given a chance. With great satisfaction our students’ editors worked hard and putforth the synergized piece of creation ‘Bhavanubhav’20- 21. The Editorial Board and students have executed a commendable task in encapsulating various events and activities. So let’s buckle up to surf through the pages of ‘Bhavanubhav.’ Wish you a happy browsing! Mr. Saji Jacob Principal 8

From the Desk of Counsellor Emotional Wellbeing and Support to Children During COVID 19 The scourge of COVID-19 continues to devastate life and livelihoods across the world. Though, the risk of exposure to COVID-19 is low for young people, yet research on natural disasters makes it clear that compared to adults, children are more vulnerable to the emotional impact of traumatic events that disrupt their daily lives. Supporting and protecting children’s emotional well-being is of utmost concern. Explore the world of little Munchkins Imagination grows here, with the knowledge that makes the path clear. Curiosity starts to grow, creativity starts to flow. We start to explore, for the knowledge, we want more. Kindergarten is the place to have fun, And get things done. 25

Joyous world of little munchkins – BIS Themed Days “A child’s mind is not a container to be filled but rather a fire to be kindled.” – Dorothea Brande Learning is a process where the brain is constantly trying to make connections from one experience to another. Theme-based craft activities help a child to understand a topic separately and also inculcates the value of compassion and sharing between peers. The big theme connects different topics, subjects, and skills and help children see and make connections between them. 26

Spearheading the Fun and Value of Observing the Surroundings “Knowledge is the intellectual manipulation of carefully verified observations.” - Sigmund Freud Observation is an important part of life. Tiny tots’ observation of the environment enables them to raise questions that trigger their curiosity. 27

Science in our Skills, Magic in our Hands Science is the poetry of reality. Everything we know about the world around us originates in science. BIS encourages kids to mingle more with the environment by providing them with the best possible mix of fun and learning. The scientific aspects through which the children look at the world are a part of their fun-filled educational journey. Science helps children develop key life skills, including an ability to communicate, remain organized and focused and even form their own opinions. It equally helps children develop their senses and overall awareness. 28

Lines and Boxes : Pattern Building “Look for patterns, and then ask why those patterns exist”.- Debra Kaye Patterns can be found everywhere in our daily lives. Patterns help children to learn how to make logical connections and use reasoning skills. The world is filled with patterns, patterns, and more patterns. So wouldn’t it be great if you could create patterns of your own? Let’s explore the patterns as created by our tiny tots. 29

Moulding and Chiselling Children by Eye Hand Coordination Activities Eye-hand coordination is a complex cognitive ability, as it calls for us to unite our visual and motor skills, allowing for the hand to be guided by the visual stimulation; our eyes receive. Eye and hand coordination activities help the senses work better and uniformly. These activities include joining the dots, which involves the work of both the eye and the hand. Have you ever seen someone who can draw a straight line with no difficulties or someone who can trace over perfectly? How do you think they do it? Well, the answer is that they have extremely amazing eye-hand coordination. 30

Reading Rockstars “Reading is important. If you know how to read, then the whole world opens up to you.” – Barack Obama. Vocabulary is an important part of our lives. Without vocabulary communication would cease to exist. Reading helps in inculcating better values, vocabulary and brings in a whole lot of fun! 31

Mastering the Art of Creativity of Storytelling and Rhymes Recitation “The best way to teach people is by telling a story.” – Kenneth Blanchard. By singing and re-telling familiar rhymes and rhyming stories, a rich set of skills are unveiled- oral language skills, poetic skills, and memory skills. Repetition of rhymes and stories is good for the brain. It helps in understanding how the language works. Stories and recitals are the best way to convey one’s innovative thoughts and imaginations to the real world. It also helps a person get carried away into a different world, distracting the form of all the worries and sorrows. 32

Strengthen your Bones and Strengthen your Mind “Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”— John F. Kennedy No one would like to laze around all day sitting inside their classrooms, would they? That’s why we have physical activities. It is scientifically proven that students who tend to like physical activities have sharper brains and better memory. Students who establish healthy lifestyle patterns at a young age will carry their benefits forward for the rest of their lives. Staying fit can be a challenge, particularly if people can’t go out. Visualize and Conceptualize “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” – Marie Curie Conceptual activities again help the wards to build interest in what they learn as well as understand the concept well. Children need to have a good understanding of different concepts as it assists in their further formal education. Concepts are often hard to understand. But understanding these bigger ‘concepts’ and ‘theories’, must start at the beginning, which starts with conceptual activities. 34

Without Labour Nothing Prospers No human masterpiece has been created without great labour. To celebrate the abundant efforts of the labour force that works tirelessly, Labour Day is celebrated on May 1. Labour Day is a reminder for us that these are the real architects and they deserve their due respect. Activities such as card making, making placards on labour rights, etc were conducted with the collective purpose to teach students to be thankful to everyone. 46

Save the Earth, Secure the Future “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson Earth is doing its responsibility towards us by giving a beautiful nature and it is our responsibility to conserve it. Each year 22nd April is celebrated as ‘Earth Day’ to create awareness about protecting our planet and preserving the environment. Though we think earth is a safe place to live in, the reality is rather bitter. Life on earth depends on the balance we maintain to preserve sustainability. This day is dedicated to educate and alert people about the urge to save our planet. Saving water, reducing pollution, protecting the wildlife, plants, and trees, recycling waste are a few means to save our environment. A lot of activities were conducted by the BIS teachers, for different grades to educate the children to join hands to save the earth. Teachers also planted saplings at the BIS campus thereby making a huge difference to the environment. 47

Love your Environment “One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken”. —Leo Tolstoy Environment Day is celebrated to encourage awareness for environmental protection. It is celebrated every year on 5th June, to create awareness about our planet. The Environment Day was ardently celebrated at BIS as even the smallest action can make the biggest difference. Earth is like our home and we must make efforts to keep it clean and green. On the occasion of World Environment Day, children took the promise to make it a better place to live! 48
