Let noble thoughts come to us from every side Annual Magazine – Vol. VIII BAHRAIN INDIAN SCHOOL APPROVED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN AFFILIATED TO CBSE, NEW DELHI

About Us Our school is like a garden. You may think, how so? A school is a brick-and- mortar affair. Yes, it has gardens hidden in its lap, but it cannot entirely be a garden, especially being in a desert. The primary necessity is for the students to think out of the box, for which they are trained at BIS every day. Students are the dazzling flowers in the garden, their achievements make the wonderful trees and the canopy, and the entire faculty acts as the birds and bees who flutter about the garden, pollinating the flowers with knowledge and the skills required to thrive as wonderful human beings. That is Bahrain Indian School - a garden growing for about 8 years now! The natural aspects of the garden together convey the message of sending noble thoughts to the students from every side. It has been famously stated that you become what you think. Therefore it is necessary to inculcate in young minds, the right thoughts and ideals. BIS aims to create constructive thoughts and responsible citizens of the world, which matches our mission to make the students mentally developed, physically strong, socially adjusted, emotionally balanced, and technically talented. That is BIS, which tries to nurture its flowers with knowledge and opportunity. The annual magazine acts as the rivulet flowing in this garden which reflects on the events of each academic year at BIS and provides an insight to the readers. It helps the readers learn about the learning opportunities and how the students utilize these opportunities to bloom in every aspect of life. One will be able to see the success of BIS in its mission and its hope to simply reach more milestones with this mission as the driving force. Be Honest, Be Truthful | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII

An Epistle by the President Message The richness of Indian Culture has universal acceptance. The multifaceted system of education that existed in India has undergone changes. Contemporary development spins over several centuries without transforming the core of Indian philosophy. And, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan we reach out to the student community to excel in both academic and co-curricular activities giving impetus to human values raising them to be responsible citizen of the countries they live. This is unique to Bhavans’. The Bhavans’ institution both in India and abroad are committed to imparting quality education. The Bhavans School in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE have been playing an important role in the Middle East by providing quality education. We wish all the students a bright career ahead. We take this opportunity to greet our teachers and the parents of our students. 6th January, 2022 (SURENDRALAL G. MEHTA) PRESIDENT Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Mar, Mumbai-400 007, Email: [email protected], Web: http://www.bhavans.info, Fax: 022-23630058 Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 3

An Epistle by the Secretary & Director Message Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has global presence as an institution of excellence. Apart from imparting quality education , Bhavans is committed to inculcate human values in every student. This includes providing every child the maximum opportunity to excel in academics and creativity. Our continued efforts to orient our pedagogy system by adopting state of art methods, foreseeing global needs and equipping the students with multidisciplinary tasks have succeeded enormously in laying a strong foundation among the students to be successful in every stride of their academic career. We wish our students at the Bhavans’ Schools in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE a bright future. 3rd January, 2022 H.N.Dastur (Executive Secretary & Director General) Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Mar, Mumbai-400 007, Email: [email protected], Web: http://www.bhavans.info, Fax: 022-23630058 Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 4

An Epistle by the Chairman 50, 40, 30, or even 20 years back – children were focused on age appropriate matters – be it their education and cultural activities in school, responsibilities at home or the social community they lived in. Character building was the essence in school and at home. Individual satisfaction and personal needs were not given importance or priorities. The change from then to now is visible at every home – The attitude of parents and children at every home – then and now is far different from the way it was back then. Change is necessary and even mandated as generations pass. But we as a school believe that culture and values should remain the same and be the solid foundation of every home for generations. During the last 15 years of my 24/7 involvement with children, parents and teachers, I am really surprised or in fact more saddened to see the current level of attitude of children from class 3 onwards. May be I belong to an older generation or still continue with the old school of thoughts. But I believe many of the children are diverting from their proper path, and chasing things that are not age appropriate, and not at all necessary in these years of their career. This will ultimately lead to more children being trapped in a whirlwind of activities and emotions that divert their attentions and focus from matters most essential to set their future on track. Many of the children are in the trap. I am very sure that as a parent you belong to one of these parent groups – either the ‘trapped’, or the possibly ‘going to be trapped’. During several interactions with parents it has come to my notice that there are a number of instances where children lack respect, cases where they retort and answer back, and yell at, when even the slightest or basic questions are asked at home, but the very same child was obedient and mostly well behaved at school. Yesterday I heard from my senior leadership team that grade 8 children have started answering back to Principal and Vice Principals. In the last couple of months, I have seen lots of such unhealthy incidents which warrant the parents’ immediate intervention. I am sure many parents are experiencing the same, or similar situations at home, as well. Our children grow physically and they may be aware of many more things than necessary for their age because of increased social media presence – but their emotional responsibility level is still that of a child and not of an adult. They need to understand the impact of their words and actions, and take responsibility for the effects of the same. At Bhavans we believe in character building which is the foundation of any child for a better tomorrow, better future. Education will follow automatically. Parents are requested to communicate with the senior management team of the school as and when necessary to discuss the progress of their children in all matters of their growth or when you feel there is a visible change in child’s attitude and behavior. Let us work together for a better tomorrow. Trust us, we are with you. N K Ramachandran Middle East - Here every child succeeds Chairman Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 5

An Epistle by the Vice Chairman Dear Students / Teachers / Parents, It gives me immense pleasure to contribute to yet another issue of our Annual School Magazine. Each year, the school magazine outlines the progress that the school has made during the previous academic year and recapitulates all events, showcasing the various activities of the school. This year has passed swiftly in a blur of achievements and accomplishments, and I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to all those who have worked hard to ensure that the magazine remains a treasure trove of memories. To me, the magazine will always be an event-filled journal, chronicling another exciting year that will be cherished by our students in the years to come. Through this magazine, I would like to greet all the stake holders of our school family. As in the previous editions, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our teachers and students for our success during the year. The good work done by our team of teachers and students speaks highly of the excellent quality of education that is being imparted by our school. It is also testimony to all the hard work that is put in by our teachers, day in and day out. I am most pleased to see progress by our students each year, as new batches exceed previous batches, armed with an unstoppable motivation to excel. During the years, our institution has created an environment and ambience that fosters learning, as it provides the students with opportunities to explore and grow, through situations that challenge them to identify their strengths and reinforce them. In this regard, the words of the great scientist Albert Einstein are memorable when he said, “I don’t teach my children. I create conditions for them to Learn”. BHAVANS prides itself on the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual development of its students. We strive to impart knowledge that encompasses the prescribed syllabi of the institution as well as that of the world that lies beyond the classroom. It is our endeavor to shape well-rounded personalities that will contribute positively to society. To this end of holistic education, we strongly believe that educational excellence cannot be achieved solely through book knowledge. At our school, it has been our aim to provide the right environment for young minds to take wing. We shape them for a globalized future, where changes take place every second and decisions have to be taken on the spot. We prepare them for situations that call upon individuals who can step up and become leaders. Based on this premise, we believe in empowering our children so as to help them become the best they can be. In this regard, BHAVANS owes much to its dynamic leadership whose untiring efforts have resulted in the overall development of the school. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our staff members for their dedication and hard work that has ensured that our flag is always flying high. Kudos to the entire Bhavans team for their commendable efforts! I believe, that in the years to come, armed with commitment and perseverance in the pursuit of knowledge and education, Bhavans will continue to prosper. I pray that the Almighty God continues to bless this school, including the students, parents, and all those associated with this institution. I Thank You Once Again. Sooraj Ramachandran Vice Chairman Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 6

From the Director’s Desk My dear students, parents, teachers, and well-wishers, “Take risks in your life. If you win you can lead. If you lose, you can guide.”-Swami Vivekananda Bahrain Indian School is a community that has created and set new standards in pastoral care; laying the foundations for young minds to be in a safe, happy, integrated, and involved environment where they grow and perform to their potential. Over the years, BIS has been constantly evolving and adapting to the changing needs. BIS has created an environment where the school is open to looking at innovative ideas which is reflected in the character of the students; as their horizons have been constantly expanded. These have in particular focused on developing the art of critical thinking, leadership, empathy, conflict resolution, and responsibility for one’s own actions- areas that we in BIS want to constantly encourage and nourish. At BIS, we are dedicated to continuously exposing our students to diverse experiences and fostering empathy. Our aim is to help our students become valuable citizens of the world rather than just successful human beings, for a truly successful human being is one who does something of value for society, and that is the ultimate yardstick that defines his or her success. To think beyond the self is what we have to instil in our students. A school's excellence lies in its partnership with parents, as the responsibility is passed on like a relay baton. We trust that parents will support us to deliver our best. Together, we seek not only engineers, doctors, lawyers, and bureaucrats, but also environmentalists, educationists, philanthropists, scientists, philosophers, authors, and filmmakers—those who can create a significant change in the world we call home. BIS serves as a springboard to nurture these remarkable individuals consistently. I would like to conclude this message with the words of Plutarch “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Himanshu Verma Director Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 7

From the Director’s Desk A child’s world is a beautiful yet enigmatic tapestry made up of threads of hopes and aspirations entwined, and dyed in the sparkling hues of thoughts and actions. Their world is highly influenced by the school environment as they spend most of their childhood in school. Thus, school environment plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual’s life. It should enable the child to blossom into a well-balanced person, healthy in mind and spirit. John Adams says, “There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live\". If we want to make every student accomplish the above objective, then every student must be encouraged and given an opportunity to participate in academics and co-curricular activities, whereby our educational system could inculcate in them qualities and learning behaviours such as taking positive risks, setting attainable goals, viewing errors as opportunities, being open to feedback and critically evaluating their own progress. I am very glad to confirm and endorse that BIS aims to develop leadership, academic, social and emotional skills in order to motivate pupils for success not only in school but also in their career paths and future relationships. To make them life-long learners and genuine human beings is yet another noble endeavour of this school. As I glance back at the performance of the children in various activities during the last academic year, be it curricular, co-curricular, I can vehemently say that our students have certainly made us, parents and teachers proud of their achievements. Jane D Hull said, “At the end of the day the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents”. It’s always enriching and motivating to see the involvement of parents in all the initiative of management. Continuous cooperation of parents has made us think and work beyond the walls of our classrooms. At the heart of this great school is the belief that our students dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the mentorship of caring adults who know when and how to challenge them. I would like to conclude my message by quoting a Tibetan proverb “A child without education is like a bird without wings.” It is heartening to see that Bahrain Indian School is living up to its motto, “Let noble thoughts come to us from everywhere” and providing wings to the young minds to soar. GOD BLESS ALL ! Ritu Verma Director Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 8

From the Desk of Principal \"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.\" Vincent Van Gogh When imagination becomes a habit, it can transform your work and life. The best schools are those that create cultures of imagination, because imagination is the source of every form of human achievement. Today, the world is becoming ever more complex. The more complex the world becomes, the more creative we need to be to meet its challenges, and this is becoming increasingly clear in the field of education. Now we are in the 21st century, and 21st-century education is all about giving students the skills they need to succeed in this new world and helping them grow the confidence to practice those skills. Success looks very different now than it did in the past. High-achieving people are frequently choosing to opt out of the traditional job market and create their own jobs. So, all the more reasons for us to be creative. Yes, creativity is as important as literacy. A number cannot measure a child’s intelligence. They are more than just a number. Their skills are more valuable than their grades. It is defined by their willingness to learn, solve problems, and try new things. They should be allowed to develop their skills and share their brilliant ideas. Evoking curiosity in children is the gift of a good teacher. If we can light the spark of interest in a child, they will learn without any further assistance. It not only provides a suitable substrate for the healthy growth of the creative potentials of the students but also develops their imaginative thinking and self-expression right from the beginning. In our efforts to provide opportunities and to promote creativity and imagination, we bring to you the 8th volume of ‘Bhavanubhav.’ It is basically a picture of the year gone by, and it reflects the academic, social, cultural, and literary standards of the school. In it, we witness the creativity and perfect view of the various talents of our students. Garnering all the resources, compiling them, and presenting them to you in their present form takes a lot of effort. Our ‘Students Editorial Board’ and all the students who contributed have executed a commendable task in encapsulating various events and activities. With great satisfaction, we put forth the synergized piece of creation, ‘Bhavanubhav-Volume 8,\" our magnum opus. So let’s buckle up to surf through the pages of Bhavanubhav! From the Counsellor’s Desk “Career Planning during school” “It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome. That's what defines your career.\" - Carlton Fisk A career is not just about earning an income. It is about pursuing the essence of your life The decision students make at school level not only has effect on their future education but also has great impact on their training, career choice, finance as well as social life. Career guidance refers to comprehensive & developmental approach in making and implementing a choice. It helps students in making the correct occupational choice. Till Class 12, everything would be smooth sailing for school students. Of course, the tensions of exams, projects and assignments would have been there, but they would not have had to compete with the outside world. After Class 12, when they step out of their comfort zone, then arises the big question. ‘WHAT NEXT?’ Some students would have decided their next steps and would be preparing for necessary entrance exams. Some would be applying to colleges of their choice. However, there is a vast majority of students who do not know what to do after the school. Looking at their peers who have decided on their next course of action, adds extra pressure on them. This is where Career guidance add value. It is essential to understand the problems which generally students face: - Students choose a stream that could be due to peer pressure, pressure from parents, lack of knowledge about the subjects, etc. It is only later in class 11 they realize that they have no interest in the subjects they are studying. By then it would be too late for them to correct their decision and retrace their steps. At times, they don’t know much about commerce and humanities subjects; so they decide to take up familiar subjects. - Thus it is important to start exploring career options from Grade 10. As Counsellors, we address the students in class 10, and briefly explain them the importance of Commerce and Humanities subjects and various career options available for those streams. Aptitude test and career map is charted for the students which give them understanding about different career option and stream selection. Most parents like to decide what their children need to study. Some like to live their dreams through their children. Some parents think that only careers like Engineering or Medicine are good for their children. It is important to understand for parents that what career is the best for their child so they get good jobs and earn well to live a comfortable life. Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VIII | Page No. 36

From the Counsellor’s Desk There are many career options available in different streams; Science, Commerce and Humanities. Few career options are as follows: Engineering and Medicine are the two most popular and in-demand careers after completing science courses in Class 12.
