OPINIÓN REFLEXIONES SOBRE EL OPEN DE ESPAÑA Y EL FUTURO DEL EUROPEAN TOUR Por Javier Reviriego Han pasado varias semanas desde que el Real Club Valderrama acogió el Open de España y hemos tenido tiempo de eva- luar el torneo y sacar conclusiones. Creo que es fundamental entender cómo debe medirse el éxito de un evento de estas características. Muchas veces, los intereses de los “actores principales” (club sede, sponsors, destino, Federación, Circuito Europeo, etc.) no están alineados, y es por ello que debemos hacer un análisis detallado desde varios “ángulos” o puntos de vista. Javier Reviriego Conviene evaluar la parte organizativa (experiencia del aficionado), la deportiva (espectáculo), el impacto en medios (sobre Martin Kaymer todo digitales), la asistencia de público, la imagen y presentación del campo, los famosos “ratings” de televisión y, por supues- to, el prestigio y reputación que este tipo de torneos profesionales aporta al club que los acoge y al destino y país en el que se ubica. Podemos hablar de gran éxito cuando el conjunto de todos estos factores ha sido positivo y se ha logrado un “win-win” para todas las partes involucradas. En líneas generales, creo que se han cumplido todos los objetivos que nos marcamos du- rante la preparación del Open y este hecho nos anima a seguir trabajando para lograr que podamos acoger más torneos de primer nivel en el futuro. Para nosotros, lo más importante como club anfitrión era presentar el campo en inmejorables condiciones y que supusiera un gran reto para los pros. Creo que, a pesar de las pocas semanas que tuvimos de preparación, cumplimos ambos objetivos con cre- ces. Me consta que la Federación Española está hacien- do un esfuerzo importante y me consta que la Junta de Andalucía está por la labor de apostar por torneos como el Open de Espa- ña para promocionar Andalucía internacionalmente. También considero fundamental comunicar la implicación con causas benéficas de los distintos torneos del Circuito Europeo. En esto nos ganan con creces los americanos. Siempre se ocupan de informar sobre la recaudación y contribución solidaria de ca- da torneo que se celebra en el PGA Tour. Tienen muy claro que mejora notablemente la imagen y prestigio de su circuito. Haga- mos lo mismo en Europa, la relación del Real Club Valderrama Open de España con la Fundación de Sergio García es un claro ejemplo; se han recaudado más de 60.000 € para luchar contra el cáncer y se ha hecho un gran esfuerzo por comunicarlo en los distintos medios. Se trata de un mensaje positivo que solo puede ayudar a mejorar la imagen de nuestro sector. La nueva visión del European Tour, liderado por su nuevo CEO Keith Pelley, creo que sin duda servirá de impulso para que países y empresas Europeas apuesten por acoger y patrocinar torneos profesionales. Es muy difícil competir con el PGA Tour, principalmente cuando los mejores jugadores europeos pasan la mayor parte del año en Estados Unidos. Tengo mucha con- fianza en que esto cambiará los próximos años, Keith Pelley se ha marcado una serie de objetivos entre los que se incluye el de llevar los mejores torneos a los mejores campos. Me parece una estrategia absolutamente acertada. Si queremos atraer a nue- vos aficionados y sponsors, el golf debe ser ante todo un espectáculo, y ver a los mejores jugadores competir en campos de pri- mer nivel sin duda lo es. La historia de Valderrama se ha forjado acogiendo torneos de gran prestigio, forma parte de nuestro modelo como club y seguiremos, por tanto, trabajando para atraer a nuestro campo a los mejores jugadores del mundo. De momento, toca agra- decer a Sergio García, a los distintos sponsors, a la Federación Española y al European Tour por habernos hecho disfrutar de un gran Open de España. It’s very difficult to compete with the PGA Tour, mainly because the leading European golfers play most of the year in the United States. I am very confident that this will change over the next few years. Keith Pelley has outlined a series of objec- tives which include taking the best tournaments to the best courses, and I be- lieve this strategy is spot on. If we want to attract new players and sponsors, golf needs to be above all else a good show, and that is certainly the case when watching the best players compete on the finest courses. Valderrama’s history has been forged by hosting major tournaments; it’s part of our model as a club, and we will therefore continue to work towards attracting the best players in the world to our course. For now, it is the right moment to express our appreciation to Sergio García, to the various sponsors, to the Spanish Federation and to the European Tour for helping us enjoy a great Spanish Open. Considered one of the best players in the world, Seve has used his know- how and prestige to create some 30 golf courses all over the world. The underlying idea in the design of Los Arqueros was to create a course which followed the lie of the land and blended harmoniously with the natural surroundings. Seve took this philosophy to heart when designing the course, and each hole has its own particular personality. The result is a challenging course for the experienced player and a genuine test for those who are new to the game. The course requires accurate play, especially in some tight tee shots where you may have to forego distance in your drive and opt instead for shorter irons or woods which ensure that the ball reaches the fairway. Hole 8 is especially tricky, as it is a long par 5, with a tight dogleg towards the right which slopes sharply downhill to the green, and a hazardous out-of-bounds area finishing in a stream at the entrance to the green. Watch out too for the 13th hole, with its high tee requiring an accurate and hard-hitting drive to a downhill area guarded by bunkers, and where only careful play will ensure that you save the par. The 3rd hole is also excellent, with a lake to the left of the fairway and a scattering of wide bunkers on the right - but it requires more attention than expected to finish successfully. However, the most difficult hole is the 6th, as it is not only the longest, but the tee-off shot is the decisive one.
