The Family Tree Our family is like the branches On an old but sturdy tree The leaves resemble people That make up our ancestry The past has not been easy And it could have made it fall But the roots are cemented firmly For this tree to stand tall As time goes by its certain That the leaves will wither and wilt But new branches of the tree will thrive On foundations they have built Together we are stronger It isn’t hard to see That every leaf is needed To make this family tree

Page |2 Part 1: Hills & Smit Origins Hills Origins The surname Hill is a local name derived from what is believed to be the Old English word ‘hyll’. The name originally meant ‘he who dwells at, by, or on the hill’. The reasons for its popularity are self-evident, in much the same way as other local names from medieval village life-such as Green, Hall and Ford. There are, however, two other rare derivations of Hill. In one case it is a pet name derived from the first names of German origin beginning with Hild- (as in Hildegard), where the prefix ‘Hild-’ means ‘battle’. In very rare cases Hill is an abbreviation of the first name Hilary, which came from the Latin and means ‘cheerful’. (We get the word ‘hilarious’ from the same root.) In former times, Hilary was more popular as a male first name. The name Hill is mentioned in records as far back as the 1191 Pipe Rolls for Norfolk, where one Gilbert del Hill is mentioned. ‘Del’ here is not Spanish or Italian, but a corruption of the Norman French ‘de la’, meaning ‘of the’, as in Walter de la Hille whose name occurs in the 1273 Hundred Rolls. As usual, there are a number of variations on this simple local name. Hillhouse (which corrupts to Hillis and Hillers and Hillas) means ‘dweller at the house on the hill’. Hilling seems to represent an Old English word ‘hylling’, ‘hill- dweller’, though Hillman can derive from two sources. It can either mean the obvious ‘dweller by the slope’, or it can mean ‘servant of Hild’ (who would originally have been ‘Hild’s man’). The widespread Heilman is also a corruption of this last name. Several other names which seem to contain Hill are not derived from it. The most widespread of these are Hilliar (a form of Helliar, an occupational name, which derives from the Old English for a slater or tiler), and Hilliard (a form of Hildyard, from the Old German personal name Hildigard). With about 150,000 namesakes Hill is the 30th most popular surname in England and Wales. (The name is not common enough throughout Scotland to be counted separately.) Hill is notably popular in and around Leicester where an estimated one in about 270 families bears the name. In descending numerical order Birmingham, Nottingham and Sheffield are other Hill strongholds. Around the world Hills are most common in Canberra (one in 590 families), Sydney (one in 618) and Melbourne (one in 663). The United States has more Hills than the entire population of Coventry-an estimated total of just under 435,000 makes this their 32nd most popular surname. No known Settler / PROG could be found or identified that arrived in South Africa with this surname. -·=»‡«=·- ∽ -·=»‡«=·-

Page |3 Smit Origins The surname Smit was first found in Holland, where the name became noted for its many branches in the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. The name was first recorded in Utrecht, a city and capital of the province of Utrecht. The ramparts of this ancient city were destroyed in 1830. The Domkerk (1254) is on the site of the original church of St. Willibrord in 720. In the crypt are the hearts of Conrad II (1039) and Henry V (1125) two German Emperors. The Museum is notable for its relics and artifacts. Its tumultuous history was strongly influenced by religious conflict. In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family. Spelling variations of this family name include: Smit, Smitt, Smitte, Smites, Smitts, Smiit, Smiites, Smittes, van Smit, Smut, Smutts, van Smutts, Schmit, Schmidt, van Schmidt and many more. Smit Progenitor in South Africa  Jan Smit also known as Johannes (Jan) Smit or Jan Smuts -·=»‡«=·- ∽ -·=»‡«=·-

Page |4 Chapter 1: Smit Progenitor in South Africa Jan Smit also known as Johannes (Jan) Smit or Jan Smuts The earliest certain mention of Jan Smit at the Cape that I have so far found is in the Cape Town church registers when his son Christoffel was baptised on 9 May 1688, and for Adriana Tol the earliest date is 16 October 1689 when their son Jacobus was baptised at Stellenbosch. Jan became a Burgher apparently circa 1687, in Dutch Vryburgher or Vrijburgher, a status in which a soldier or other employee of the VOC was released from their contractual obligations to the VOC and permitted to farm, become a tradesman, or work for others. This would fit in with the 1705 declaration which indicated that between 1687 and his demise, he had owned property in the fertile valley near Stellenbosch now known as Jonkershoek. At his marriage he was described as a soldier in the company of Captain Moor, at present garrisoned in the town (of Delft). In a declarion signed before the Secretary of Stellenbosch on the 11th October 1705 and witnessed by Augustus Meijhuijsen and Jacobus Smit, Johannes Mulder and Dirk Coetsee, Dirk Coetsee the PROG for the Coetzee family, both Old Heemraden, stated that it was known to them that a certain farm in Jan de Jonkers Hoek, to the east above the farm of the late Jan de Jonker, had been in the possesion of Jan Smit from 1687 until his death and was still in the possesion of Andries Cuijper as the husband of Jan Smit's widow. A Jan Smit is listed in the Cape muster rolls from 1690 on, (there are no muster rolls between 1686 and 1690) but Jan Smit and Adriana Tol as a couple are first mentioned in the1692 rolls, resident at Stellenbosch with four children. In the 1692 Opgaafrol (tax return) they are listed as having three sons and one daughter, one pistol, one rifle (?- seijd geweer), one flintlock, two horses and six oxen. In 1693 and 1695 they are listed again, on both occasions with five children, Johannes Smit being described as 'from Maastricht' in the 1693 roll. In 1696 we have just 'the widow of Jan Smith' (this muster roll made no note of children) and in 1698 'the widow of Jan Smith with 6 children'. On the 1st of October 1696 Jan Smit was insulted by Jacob Cloete. Enraged, Smit drew his rapier, but Cloete evaded the blows and clouted Smit with a piece of wood, beat him with his fists and kicked his chest, shouting: 'Lie there, you dog!'. Within a very few days, during which he suffered continual pain in his chest, Jan Smit died. (source: Cape Archives, 1/STB 18/153, Notarial Declarations)

Page |5 From what have been found so far, they would seem to have had the following children: 1. Joannis Smit, baptised 10 January 1683, Nieuwe Kerk, Delft. He is probably the Jan Smit who married Eva Zaaijman in 1711 and who died circa July 1714, without leaving any children. 2. Christoffel Smit, baptised 9 May 1688, Cape Town farmer of Sútrij or Lútrij, Stellenbosch married Catrijn la Fêbre 9 February 1721, Stellenbosch 3. Jacobus Smit, baptised 16 October 1689, Stellenbosch (baptism recorded in the Cape Town registers) farmer of Uylekraal, Swartland, he died circa 1752. married Elisabeth Slabbert, 3 March 1709, Cape Town 4. Hulsie Smit, baptised 1 April 1691, Cape Town (this name is probably a phonetic rendering by the minister of the name 'Hilletje' under which name she appears in all later records). She died circa January 1761. married Matthias de Beer and later Jan Georg Zorn 5. Francois Smit, born Cape of Good Hope farmer in the Vierentwintigrivieren area, he died circa 1758. married Maria van Staden, 19 November 1719, Drakenstein 6. Alewijn Smit, baptised 28 September 1695, Cape Town farmer of Zo Voorbij, Vierentwintigrivieren. He died circa 1774. married Hester Bekker, 25th December 1718, Drakenstein. She died the 11th January 1778. On the map below the “Vierentwintigrivieren” that is mentioned above is known as the Vier-en-twintig-riviere located in the Province of the Western Cape.

Page |6 Their last child Alewjin (I) Smit known as Alewyn or Alwyn In 1713 he was working as a hired hand for Jacobus van Eden according to the estate accounts of the latter (Aan Alewijn Smit over verdiende knegts loon ... f.21 - MOOC 13/1/1, 62). He was described as 'Alewijn Smit de oude' in his and his wife's joint Will of 1774. This Will makes mention only of two of their children, Jacobus and Johannes Petrus. Although De Villiers/Pama, in the Geslagsregister van Ou Kaapse Families, 1961, gives him a second wife in 1756, he was, in fact, survived by his wife Hester Bekker who died in 1777 according to the death rolls of the Master of the Orphan Chamber in Cape Town.
