His *Hansel and Gretel (1984, Caldecott Medal o f Honor, text b y R i k a L e s s e r ) , * Rumpelstiltskin (1986), and *Rapuniel (1997, Caldecott G o l d Medal) incorporate an awareness of historical change into both text and illustration. (There are explanatory notes following each tale.) A s in the early Grimm version, his enraged R u m pelstiltskin simply flies out o f the w i n d o w at the end, leaving behind a joyous miller's daughter saved by her faithful servant woman.
