Adaptive BE THERE...Inthemoment At games Four friends and family To support others Mentally For what matters In Mind, body, and spirit For yourself 68

Challenge In the heat of mid-August, our student leaders banded together at the annual Leadership Lab to create the new adaptive challenge. Throughout the day, students debated over the wording of the statement, yet the overarching themes were all the same: bringing the student body together, living in the moment and being there for one another. Finally, the students decided on “Be There.” The unique aspect of this adaptive challenge is that it can be applied to practically every aspect of our lives in and outside of school. Be there for games, for plays, in the classroom, but also be there for others and for yourself. Another special interpretation of this year’s challenge is for the seniors: be there with your best friends, to try new things, and to be role models for all your younger peers. This year’s adaptive challenge serves as a universal message to the members of the Severn community: take advantage of the wonderful opportunities our school offers, while also being ally and advocating for others. 69

Elle Rentz ‘21, Bella Ingrao ‘21, and Amy year’s Spirit Week: Sobocinski ‘21 Q: What was the best part of Too Tired Tuesday? A: What was for me, the best part of Too Tired 73 Tuesday was being able to carry a pillow in class. The pillow brought comfort to a whole new level. Another plus about that day was how easy it was to come up with a costume. Q: Who do you think wore the best costume? A: In my personal opinion, Ms. Campbell’s meme day costume was the best. She put a sign at the front of her desk saying, “Latin Is Not A Dead Language. Change My Mind” and had a mug to match. Q: Which day was your favorite day and why? A: Meme Monday was definitely my favorite. There was such a variety of ideas that I almost never saw the same meme twice. It was also the one where people got extra creative with their costumes and created their own variation of their meme. It was fun to try to figure out what person was dressed as.

VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY Every year, our Middle and Upper school students have the opportunity to host their grandfriends on campus and experience a day in their lives. The students were so excited to bring their grandfriends to their classes and let them meet their teachers and friends! They were able to experience two class periods before they made their way to the Memorial Gymnasium for the bi-annual Veterans Day Assembly. The audience stood as the Naval Academy Color Guard presented the flags. One tradition that Severn holds is that when the band plays the anthem of each military branch, every student, grandfriend and faculty member that is connected or affiliated with the branch stands proudly. Students also volunteer to individually represent each fallen soldier that was an alum of Severn School. It is a time for us to reflect on past students and families that have served to protect our country. Addi Harris ‘20 addresses the Kent Holtgrewe ‘73 was Severn community. presented the Rolland M. She completed her undergraduate degree at Valparaiso University in Indiana where she majored in French and the Humanities and minored in Business. Much of her work at Gettysburg involves oversight of the campus visit team and student workers which keeps her in touch with the pulse of the campus.” -Danielle Drury The Honor Code book, where Mrs. Fuller and Chase O’Malley’ 22 every student and teacher writes their signature as an incoming member of the Severn community. “The Honor code is very important to me because it is the foundation of a community that prides itself on integrity. By signing the Honor code on every assignment we pledge that we have completed the project with honesty and integrity and that the work represents our own best efforts. We are not perfect. We make mistakes. However, at the Williams ’22 end of the day, by being a part of a community that prides itself on integrity we will hopefully choose to live this way in college and for Sheena Powers ’22 and Devan the rest of our lives.” -Mr. Buckley Mrs. Fuller and Megan Hiller ’22 Honor Code 93

Mathew Beagan ‘20 and Annie Bennett ‘19 The Crocodile “This fall, the Water Street Players presented The Crocodile. Adapted by Tom Basden, The Crocodile is based on an 1865 short story of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The show takes place in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the year 1865. During this time, zoos are the popular place to go in town for entertainment. Ivan (Jared Reilly), a struggling actor, is “angry in general” at the world around him specifically because the animals in the zoo are more famous than he is. While visiting the zoo, Ivan stumbles across a crocodile, who appears to be dead. In the process of trying to prove that the crocodile is in fact not alive, Ivan is swallowed by the crocodile. He becomes “lodged” in the crocodile and manages to survive the attack. After being swallowed, Ivan finds himself in the public eye which causes conflict between him and his best friend, Zack. Along with Ivan’s “sheer being inside a crocodile factor,” the show also follows the love triangle between Ivan, Zack, and Anya (Emma Miller). Anya and Ivan were together for four years, but she is now with Zack and has given up her acting lifestyle. The show follows the characters’ journey through this bizarre series of events. The Crocodile is truly a special show unlike any I have seen in my years at Severn.” -Lisa O’Fiesh ’19 Annie Bennett ‘19 Jared Reilly ‘19 and Zarah Meek ‘21 Jared Reilly ‘19 Mathew Beagan ‘20 94
