SCHOOL OF MEDICINEThe UNPHU School of Medicine was founded in 1966 as the first Private Medical School in the DominicanRepublic. The first group of Doctors graduated in 1973.Our 1,263 graduates are physicians of significant performance and prestige in their profession, practicing in theDominican Republic, the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Spain, and many other countries. The program in Medicine consists of 16 periods that can be completed in 5 years and 4 months, since thestudents can take three periods per year of 15 weeks each. Before entering the Medical School´s program, most of our international students have already done their Pre-Med studies in their countries of origin.Dominican students usually do their Pre-med studies in our University. The Medical School curriculum is divided into four cycles: 4 periods of Pre-med, 5 periods of Pre-Clinical Cycle(Basic Sciences), 4 periods of Clinical Cycle (Pre-Internship), and 3 periods of Clinical Cycle (Internship).Pre-Med: This is intended to provide general and simultaneous training to students from the School of HealthSciences (Medicine, Odontology, and Pharmacology). In this cycle students acquire the essential knowledge inthe following areas: Social, Public Health, Research Methodology, Literature, Biological Sciences, Mathematics,Physical-Chemical Sciences and Humanities (Bioethics), and others. They also receive University Orientationand Physical Education or Art-Related Activities (UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 186

Preclinical Cycle (Basic Sciences): The student dedicates himself mainly to the study of normal structures and their functions, as well as the study of Parasitology and Public Health (divided into Epidemiology, Administration, and Health Legislation). In addition, through the study of Pathologies and Pharmacology, the student is introduced to the analysis of the conditions that interfere with man’s normal functions, and the changes that occur in the body as a response to those conditions. The course emphasizes the dynamic and functional aspects of the process of the disease. The principal objective of this. Is to try to make the student aware of the relationship existing between this knowledge and clinical medicine. Clinical Sciences (Pre-Internship): This consists of four semesters (12th to 15th). Semesters 12th and 13th last 15 weeks each, for a total of 30 weeks of theory classes. The 14th semester lasts 12 weeks, and the 15th semester lasts 22 weeks, for a total of 34 weeks of hospital practice. This cycle introduces students to knowledge of Medical, Surgical, and Pediatric Pathology, as well as Gynecology and Obstetrics, and helps them to apply this knowledge to understand man and disease, its diagnosis, and treatment. For this purpose a large part of this. Is used in work with the patient in hospital rooms in order to gain this skill. Studies in Psychiatry are also included in order to prepare the student to treat psychiatric patients and their diseases. Clinical Sciences (Internship): This consists of three semesters (16th to 18th), with a duration of one calendar year, in accordance with the provisions of the Health Law. This year is dedicated specifically to the practical application in the hospital of the knowledge, techniques, and experience obtained in the classroom, laboratories, and clinical facilities. Emphasis is placed on patient management. Hospital practices are performed in the different hospitals in the City of Santo Domingo: the Dr. Salvador B. Gautier Hospital, the Dr. Luis E. Aybar Hospital, the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children´s Hospital, the Padre Billini Psychiatric Hospital, and the Plaza de la Salud Maternal-Children´s Hospital and its Geriatrics and Trauma Center. Outstanding students can perform six months of practice during the last year of studies in foreign hospitals. Currently they are practicing in Miami, Puerto Rico, and Seville, among others.Students receive a very complete medical education. They are exposed to a large variety ofexperiences in the hospitals that prepare them to stand out in their residency programs. We placespecial emphasis on preparing our students so they are able to pass the examinations for medicalresidencies in other countries, such as the Single National Exam (ENU) of the Dominican Republic, ofthe United States (USMLE), and of Spain (MIR), among others. SCHOOL OF ODONTOLOGY/DENTISTRY The UNPHU School of Odontology/Dentistry started in 1966 as the first private school in the Dominican Republic with a dental school, and in 1972 graduated five founding students with a degree in doctorate of dental surgery, with teaching programs up to the most modern scientific experiences and teaching techniques of the moment, and supported by various in the University. In 1983 a review was performed, and in November 1985 the academic board change the name of the dentalschool to School of Odontology. Since that time the degrees given are for a doctorate in odontology. Our school has the largest number of academic credits and requirements in patient care than any other in our country, which translates into more experience for our students in the different areas of odontology. The career of odontology consists of 14 semesters divided into three cycles: a first basic cycle with common studies in health science, from the first to the fourth semester. A second preclinical cycle from the fifth to the seventh semester, and the third clinical cycle from the eighth to the fourteenth semester. (UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 198

First Cycle (Basic): intended to provide general and simultaneous academic training to the students inthis cycle: The students will acquire essential knowledge in the following areas: Social, Public Health,Research Methodology, Literature, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physical-Chemical Sciences andthe Humanities (Bioethics), and others. They will also receive University Orientation and PhysicalEducation or Art-Related Activities.Second Cycle (Pre-Clinical): The student will come into contact for the first time with materials relatedto dental practice and the use of mannequins with which they will develop proper techniques and skills forthe future dental treatment of patients.Third Cycle (Clinical): This stage is where the student receives the odontological preparation necessaryto prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases of the mouth and teeth; acknowledging his limitations in caringfor patients, and his duty to refer them to the corresponding specialists so that they obtain proper healthservices.External work or community care: One of the programs our clinic has dedicated itself to most isexternal work, where our students attend health centers outside the university campus to provide dentalcare in low-income communities. (UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 199

Our students perform this work in such places as:  Dr. Heriberto Pieter Cancer Hospital. The student familiarizes himself with the different pathologies of the mouth.  Juan Pablo Pina Hospital. The student familiarizes himself with traumatology of the mouth.  Vida y Esperanza Foundation. The student familiarizes himself with odontological care of special patients in the area of odonto-pediatrics.  Toribio Bencosme Hospital, Moca, where students participate in missions to treat children with cleft palate and hare lip, and their consequences. These surgical activities include participation by well known universities such as the MetropolitanUniversity of New York, the University of Puerto Rico, the Central University of Venezuela, and the ChangWong Hospital of Taiwan.International AgreementsThe school of dentistry currently has student and teacher exchange agreements with prestigious schoolssuch as:School of dentistry, TUFTS University, Boston, USASchool of dentistry, National University of ColombiaSchool of dentistry, University of Puerto RicoSchool of dentistry, Central University of VenezuelaSchool of Integral Dental Training, Barcelona, Spain(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 200
