A man of vast culture, with a profound knowledge of the bodies of literature of many countries in their original languages, Pedro Henríquez Ureña demonstrated his extraordinary skill as a writer in all aspects of his work, as both an art critic and promoter of philosophy and contemporary theater and in his essays on philosophy and Spanish verse. He was also singularly prolific in his teaching work in Mexico and Argentina, where he is remembered by the most prominent intellectual figures of both countries, who proudly call themselves his disciples. Pedro Henríquez Ureña died in Argentina in 1946, fully recognized for his literary greatness which, far from fading with the passage of time, continues to grow, encompassing the entire scope of our language.(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 16

(UNPHU) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña 47

ACADEMIC INDEX OR GRADE POINT AVERAGEThe academic index or grade point average is the measure of the student´s performance. It is obtained asfollows:  Multiply the points obtained in each course taken by the number of corresponding credits.  Add all the results calculated to obtain the total number of points.  Add the credits from the courses taken in order to obtain the total credits.  Divide the total number of points by the total number of credits.  Approximate the results to the tenth of a point (if the hundredth falls between 0 and 4, the value of the decimal is not changed, and if the hundredth is between 5 and 9, the decimal is increased by one unit).Accumulated Academic Index or Grade Point Average:At the end of each academic period of the student´s studies, two academic indices will be calculated:The one corresponding to the period, based on the courses registered and evaluated during that time. The cumulative academic index, based on all the courses taken by the student during his career up tillthat moment. If the student has repeated any course during two or more academic periods, thecumulative academic index will only include the course one time with the higher grade.Academic Status: This is understood to be the assigning of the student to a category, based on thesemester´s and cumulative academic indices that he has achieved up to and including the last semesterof studies.New types of academic conditions or status can be identified:Normal Status. This corresponds to the student that has had an adequate academic performance duringthe previous semester.Academic probation status 1 and 2. This corresponds to the student with an insufficient academicperformance during the previous semester and who is submitted to a period of strict academicsupervision.Status of academic deficiency. This corresponds to the student that was not able to improve hisacademic performance during the probation period and is only permitted to register in a new major orcourse of study.Condition of academic probation due to deficiency 1 and 2. This corresponds to the student whochanges his major because of academic deficiency and submitted to a new stage of academicsupervision.Status of academic expulsion. This corresponds to the student who for a second time lapsesinto a condition of academic deficiency. This student may return to the Institution to studyanother major via transfer from another center of higher learning, so long as his registration hasnot been permanently cancelled.Status of permanent academic expulsion. This corresponds to a student who for the second time lapsesinto a condition of academic deficiency and is permanently dropped from the University.(UNPHU)Universidad NacionalPedro Henríquez Ureña 48

Undefined status. This corresponds to a student whose academic condition it has not been able todetermine for any reason. The student´s academic status or condition will be determined at the end of each semester in which hehas been registered, and is valid until the end of the following semester.Every student who begins his studies in the University will be assigned a normal status, and will remainin that status during his first two semesters.Any student who at the end of any semester achieves a semester academic index or cumulativeacademic index equal to or higher than 2.0 will be in normal status during the following semester ofstudies.Any student who, at the end of each semester (with the exception of the first semester) does not achieveone of the two minimum indices (semester or cumulative) specified in the previous paragraph will be puton academic probation status 1; if he again does not achieve one of the minimum indices, the student willremain on probation for one more semester (academic probation status 2). If at the end of the semesteron academic probation 2 the student still does not achieve one of the minimum indices, he will fall into theacademic deficiency status, excepting if he has passed 75% of the credits for the major, in which case theprobationary period will be extended, placing him again on academic probationary status 1, extendableduring the second semester.(academic probation status 2), if he does not achieve normal status by the end of the first period. (sic) Thestudent, having passed 75% of his major and who falls into this new probationary period will not recuperate normalstatus, he will also pass into academic deficiency status. (sic)In the academic deficiency status, the student must register in a new major in accordance with hisaptitudes, interests, and academic level. In order to request a change of major due to academicdeficiency, the student must previously go to the University´s Psychological Orientation Center for them tohelp him choose a new major. The result will be reported by the Psychological Orientation Center to theOffice of the Academic Vice Rector, who will be in charge of approving the change in major, afterconsultation with the Director of that program. When the student is accepted for a change of major due toacademic deficiency, he will be assigned academic deficiency status 1. This probationary period can beextended for a second semester (academic deficiency probation status 2), if he does not recuperate thenormal status at the end of the first one.If at the end of the academic deficiency probationary status 2 the student does not achieve normal status,he will fall into academic expulsion status and will be permanently dismissed from the University. Thisstudent may register in the UNPHU again to study another major after having achieved a professionaldegree in another University.During any probationary period, the Director of the Pre-Med major must limit the student´s academic loadto a maximum of 20 credits. Likewise, he will send the student in academic probationary status to theOrientation Center, to determine the factors that have influenced his poor academic performance and willcollaborate with the student to overcome this situation.
