PRIMARY SCHOOL... EXTRA MURALS

I would like to thank all the Primary School girls for all their hard work and dedication to swimming. The number of girls coming to training has been remarkable despite all the COVID regulations. We have had to juggle times around so that we can keep our girls in the water. After 18 months of not being able to partake in galas, we were finally allowed to participate in our East Rand Galas which are held on Wednesdays at various schools. The grandstands were very quiet due to no spectators being allowed, but our swimmers cheered each other on. Despite having to race against boys, the girls stayed motivated and encouraged by their teammates on the grandstands. It was amazing to see how positive they kept each other. The excitement on the girls’ faces competing in some friendly galas was wonderful to see. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to run our learn to swim programme due to covid, but hopefully this will be up and running again in the near future Thanks to the Coaches for all their hard work and dedication! Without them, the swimming season would not be possible. From the early mornings to assisting with galas. You are all appreciated! Thank you!

Junior Diving The history of diving at Sr Dominic's Written and researched by Mrs. G Gous. In its more elaborate, acrobatic diving originated in Europe in the early 19th century. It became part of the swimming program at the Olympic Games in 1904. Diving is an aquatic sport where the competition is based on how an athlete dives into a swimming pool from a raised springboard, while performing acrobatic movements. Competitors possess many of the same characteristics as gymnastics and dancers including strength, flexibility, kinesthetic judgement and air awareness. The scoring of a dive has 3 elements : the approach, the dive and the entry. Synchronized diving takes place when two divers from a team and perform various dives simultaneously. The first mention of diving at St Dominic's was in a article by past pupil Shirley Wherrie (1952 – 1956) under the guidance of Mrs. Hirsch, “I became a diving expert and participated in School Galas in the various diving categories, including the high diving board”. Mrs. Cullen recalls that in 1991 and 1992 one of the Senior Biology teacher Mrs. Daryl Talbot trained some divers. She also recalls taking the divers to a competition. Mrs. Talbot left St Dominic’s and diving only really got off the ground with the opening of the new Aquatics Centre in 2012. I recall that every year at the annual Premier Gala, St Dominic’s lost points as they did not have a diving team. The divers from Roedean coached by Loredana performed at the opening of the new St Dominic’s Aquatic Centre in 2012. She also uses our boards for training and competitions. EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORTS BY KAY MOONEY 2013 This is the first year that St Dominic's has had a diving team. About 30 girls tried out for the team and 10 girls were fortunate enough to be chosen. All of our divers did exceptionally well during the season considering it was their first year competing. St Dominic’s had the honour of hosting the Inter-High Diving Competition. We were privileged to meet and learn from experienced and exceptional divers from schools like St Mar’s and Kingsmead. We are proud of what we have achieved this season. It is all thanks to our wonderful coach Nandi van der Sluys, who was previously part of the South African Team and dived at National level. The girls should be very proud of themselves for their hard work, discipline, determination and dedication and for perfecting every dive to the best of their ability. EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORT BY COACH NANDY VAN DER SLUYS 2013 The girls worked very hard and enjoyed every diving lesson. We had our first inter-High this year and St Dominic's made heads turn. The school received several compliments about our diving team and the talent we had in our first year of diving. We also started a diving club at the beginning of the year. Be on the lookout for our Junior Diving Team at the end of this year. We believe they will achieve great things. In 2016 at the Sports and Cultural Dinner Lethabo Maboa was made Diving Captain and received the award for the “Most Improved Senior Diver”. In 2018 Jensen Mills was awarded Half Colours for Diving. In 2019 the junior and senior girls accomplished so much in the season. They learnt 4 new dives, of which included twists and somersaults off the 1-meter and the 3-meter boards. The high school girls took part in several Inter-School competitions and achieved great results. 2021 REPORT BY MRS R. BADENHORST The Diving girls have really excelled in 8 weeks of training in the third and only training term. During this time, the junior girls learn how to complete intricate jumps and dives. The grade 1 and 2 divers have managed to jump off the 3-meter board and complete a forward and back tuck jump without making bombs. I am extremely proud of every St Dominic’s diver. I cannot wait to see what they will accomplish in the new year as our diving season carries on.

Water Polo School Sport has been severely affected by the Also a big well done to Emma Harmzen and Jessica Covid-19 pandemic. Coaches recruited and worked with our newest intake of water-polo players. Many of these girls got to play in their first Water Polo matches and the highlight of the season was winning their last game against Kingsmead. We would like to congratulate all our junior players who took part in the U14 Roedean tournament and ended in 7th position.

Skills taught this year in This has been a trying year for practice correct holding all, but I am proud to say that grip, correct standing position, forward and, our St Dominic’s girls showed back hand, serve and enthusiasm and dedication to hitting over the net into the correct blocks. tennis. As soon as we were allowed to commence practice the girls were ready and willing. Thank you to all the Grade 1 to 7 Tennis Girls for giving your all. You rock! Q: Why are spiders great tennis players? A: Because they have great topspin.

Matches played this year: On Thursday, 7th of On Thursday, 23rd of October, our U13 girls September, our U13 girls played Assumption. The played St Columbus. The girls had so much fun and girls loved being on the court playing their first were ready for the game in nearly 18 months. challenge. St Dominic's won this match 17-11. Scan the code to learn how to score in tennis. On Thursday, 14th of October, our U13 girls played Sacred Heart. The girls played a mixture of single and double games. They learnt so much from each other.

Netball Our netball season started off extremely well and with high hopes. Four of our u13 girls were chosen to represent St. Dominic’s at the Gauteng Provincial Trails. They did very well and we are so proud of them. We also managed to have school trials for each age group and squads were chosen. Unfortunately, two weeks away from our first matches we had to cancel due to lockdown level changes. The coaches and the girls were still very eager to carry on the season in the hope that the lockdown level would change and allow them to continue with the matches set for the season. Throughout the season the girls had skills training and development to continue their growth in the sport. A thank you to all our netball girls and to the coaches for pushing through and not letting the pandemic stop or dampen our school’s Netball spirit. We shall rise!

The Grade 1-7 girls had a blast… under the circumstances. This year we were lucky enough to go back on the field and outside on the Astro during the Second term. Even though it was not the way we would have liked it to be. We were very fortunate to have our three wonderful Coaches (Seth, Ernie, and Josh) with us again. The Parents and the girls were still very anxious as it had been a full year since our last real outdoor activities. At first the attendance was very low, but as the weeks went on, attendance grew. The coaches started off training with developing the technique of controlling the stick and handling the ball. They went onto some running with the ball once the girls were comfortable with the stick and ball control.

• The lockdown levels really put a spanner in the works as we were no longer allowed training with sticks as the government tightened restrictions because of a spike in covid 19 numbers. • We then were only allowed fitness training which was well received by the girls. They did however long for an actual game. Hopefully 2022 will provide this opportunity for them. • Fitness training was still so much fun, and girls still gave their best. • There were many days when there was just one girl, but training continued…personal coaching in progress.

Junior School Chess Report 2021 Last year during LOCKDOWN we realized that we had to follow the high school and move chess online. This transition did not come without some challenges. Unfortunately, we have been unable to include the Grade1 – 3 girls in this process. Our junior school chess players have all registered on LICHESS.org. A St Dominic’s chess club was set up on LICHESS, giving our girls the opportunity to play against one another in a safe environment. Our girls continue to play weekly tournaments online to improve their chess skills. Mr Els also came on board to assist with the junior school chess. He has loaded many lessons and tips on Microsoft Teams – Sports Team, where the girls can learn from his expertise. In the 3rd term we were fortunate enough to be able to bring the girls back into the classroom one grade per week. Even though the girls enjoy the online tournaments, they are very excited to be back in the classroom facing their opponents. Thank you to all the girls who have remained committed throughout this trying time. Gillian O’Connor

SENIOR SCHOOL Grade 8 to Matric

PRINCIPAL REPORT f 2020 was the year that COVID-19 shook the world, 2021 was the aftershock. Whilst we fervently hoped I that we had seen the worst of COVID, the 2021 school year had its own challenges: the school year opened with a full lockdown, with another during the June third/July third wave. Having learnt many lessons the previous year, our teaching staff was fully prepared to launch into online learning. We are proud that no schooling was lost over the year and we were able to complete our mid-year assessments without interruption. Much research is yet to emerge on the impact of COVID-19 on the emotional wellbeing of our students. This year students adapted far more easily to hybrid learning. It was, however, in the re-introduction of extra-mural activities that we saw the toll that being at home and navigating the world through a screen had on our students. They missed chatting, collaborating, and engaging with their peers. The enthusiasm with which our students took to the sports fields, polo pool, tennis/netball courts, marimbas, drama club, public speaking, to name but a few, is testimony to their absolute need for social interaction, not to mention the life skills taught by our extra-mural programme: commitment, rules of engagement, teamwork, fair play. HEAD OF COMMITTEES REPORT M y journey as Deputy Head Girl – Head of Committees ONE started on the 14th of October 2020 and it has truly been a wonderful experience. SCHOOL I started at St Dominic’s as a little Grade 000 and therefore, I was ONE excited to receive the opportunity to give back to the school that has played such a large role in shaping the person I am today. From the FAMILY beginning, I knew Covid would throw a few curve balls into the mix and the job of Head of Committees would have to change accordingly. ONE However, instead of letting this discourage us, the Committee Heads and I decided to rather focus on what we could do, instead of focusing SPIRIT on what we could not do. Although we had to adapt the portfolios considerably, the five committees still worked to make a difference in the school and held smaller events to showcase what they stand for. This included multiple dress-up days, the sticky note day, various charity drives, the virtual boards and overall fun activities. I truly believe these events helped bring some joy back into the school. I would therefore like to thank Andreia, Courtney, Gaby, Tshego and Jordan for the perseverance, commitment and dedication they all showed in running their respective committees successfully. I feel honoured to have worked with each of them. Despite our limitations, we still managed to make our term in office a memorable one, and this would not have been possible without the following people: To Mrs Matloha, Mrs Jacobs, Mrs Van Zyl and Mrs Fitzgerald, thank you for always listening to our problems and bouncing back with the wisest of words. Additionally, thank you to the Top 4, for being by my side in this incredible journey and for always being there for me- I would not have survived my term in office without you. A big thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey and helped me along the way; from my teachers throughout the years, to the matric class of 2021. Each and every one of you are special young ladies and I cannot wait to see the big impact each of you will make!
