Dev Nandan J ART THERAPY MANDALA ART Intricate geometric compositions created on a base of a circle, known as mandalas, have a deep spiritual meaning in Hinduism and Buddhism. They represent the whole of the universe, and they can be used as an exercise or for meditation. Recently, the basic idea of drawing a radial pattern has been also adopted by the Western world, as a tool for therapy or simply relaxation. Drawing a mandala (or what is widely considered as a mandala in Western civilization) can seem very strenuous and difficult at first, but it's actually the opposite. The intricate look of a mandala comes from following a rhythm, which turns a little effort into a stunning result. Doing the same thing over and over, and advancing despite it, is very relaxing and lets you stay in the moment. # Inspiring in every page 147
Rakhi Krishna S BHARATANATYAM Bharatanatyam, a pre-eminent Indian classical dance form presumably the oldest classical dance heritage of India is regarded as mother of many other Indian classical dance forms. Conventionally a solo dance performed only by women, it initiated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and eventually flourished in South India. Theoretical base of this form traces back to ‘Natya Shastra’, the ancient Sanskrit Hindu text on the performing arts. A form of illustrative anecdote of Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas emoted by dancer with excellent footwork and impressive gestures its performance repertoire includes nrita, nritya and natya. Accompanists include a singer, music and particularly the guru who directs and conducts the performance. It also continues to inspire several art forms including paintings and sculptures starting from the spectacular 6th to 9th century CE temple sculptures. History & Evolution According to the Hindu tradition the name of the dance form was derived by joining two words, ‘Bharata’ and Natyam’ where ‘Natyam in Sanskrit means dance and ‘Bharata’ is a mnemonic comprising ‘bha’, ‘ra’ and ‘ta’ which respectively means ‘bhava’ that is emotion and feelings; ‘raga’ that is melody; and ‘tala’ that is rhythm. Thus, traditionally # Inspiring in every page 148
the word refers to a dance form where bhava, raga and tala are expressed. The theoretical base of this dance form, which is also referred as Sadir, trace back to ancient Indian theatrologist and musicologist, Bharata Muni’s Sanskrit Hindu text on the performing arts called ‘Natya Shastra’. The text’s first complete version was presumably completed between 200 BCE to 200 CE, however such timeframe also varies between 500 BCE and 500 CE. According to legends Lord Brahma revealed Bharatanatyam to the sage Bharata who then encoded this holy dance form in Natya Shastra. The text that consists of thousands of verses structured in different chapters divides dance in two specific forms, namely ‘nrita’ that is pure dance comprising of finesse of hand movements and gestures, and ‘nritya’ that is solo expressive dance that comprises of expressions. According to Russian scholar Natalia Lidova, ‘Natya Shastra’ elucidates several theories of Indian classical dances including that of Tandava dance, standing postures, basic steps, bhava, rasa, methods of acting and gestures. # Inspiring in every page 149

Ganga C Dileep Cotton Swabs Painting Cotton swabs aren’t just for sitting about in a bathroom cabinet, waiting to be used. They can also make the most beautiful paintings. Cotton swab painting so simple and needs very few materials but it helps to develop fine motor skills, concentration and focus. In this cotton swab painting, the cotton swabs are dipped in paint and printed onto the card. These little print marks make your picture into creative patterns and stunning artworks. This activity is a specific style of art known as “pointillism.” Pointillism uses tiny dots of colors to make a picture. When the eye sees these dots side by side, it connects the colors so you can figure out what the picture is, even though the colors don’t actually touch each other or blend together on paper. Georges Seurat was a famous artist in the pointillist style. This activity is also a great way to practice fine motor skills and grasp. The precision you use to create pictures using small dots is wonderful motor control practice. # Inspiring in every page 158

The Indian Field Hockey 167 Amrita SR The Indian Hockey Team is the national men's hockey team of India. It was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal. From 1928 to 1956, was the golden period for the Indian Hockey team. The Indian men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, gaining six gold medals in a row. The Indian team has won a total of eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Olympics. After their gold medal win at the 1980 Olympics, the team's performance declined through the next three decades, with the team failing to win a medal at the Olympics or the World Cup. In 2016, the Indian men's team won its first ever silver medal in Champions Trophy and reached the knockout stage of the Olympics for the first time in 36 years. The first hockey club in India came up in Calcutta in 1885-86 and soon Bombay and Punjab followed suit. From 1928 to 1956, the Indian hockey juggernaut won six straight Olympic gold medals, while winning 24 consecutive matches. During this time, India scored 178 goals conceding only 7 in the process. As of 2020, the team is ranked fourth in the world. From February 2018, the Government of Odisha has started sponsoring the Indian national field hockey team, both men and women team. In a first- of-its-kind association, the state has decided to support the India's field hockey team for next five years. # Inspiring in every page

(Sports) what is the main point of it? Amith . S Name A sport is essentially just a physical activity with opposing sides and a system of determining which side prevails. And meaning of sports is also to unite people If this is meaningless, then it could just as easily be said that almost any activity which involves opposition standing as an obstacle to a goal is meaningless as well. The concept of using skill, strategy or even just brute force to overcome a deliberately placed obstacle applies to many different areas of life. In some # Inspiring in every page 173
cases, the stakes could possibly be quite high, including life and death. In sports, the stakes are generally held to be lower than that, but still having a range of values, from mere bragging rights all the way up to billions of dollars hanging in the balance. There are times when the stakes of a sporting contest are personal or regional pride, and other times when it could be the esteem and validation of an entire culture or way of life. Athletes like Althea Gibson, or Jackie Robinson or Jesse Owens are examples of athletes whose accomplishments on the court or the field or the track in the face of daunting odds are often used as direct manifestations of the conflicts within society as a whole, worldwide. Sports can often serve as a platform for new ideas - both trivial and profound - to be put on display for a whole new audience to witness for the first time. Tommy Smith and John Carlos made a simple hand gesture on the medal stand at the 1968 Olympics, and the image of that reverberates with meaning even today, to generations of people who will learn about that particular slice of civil history for the first time through observing that picture. # Inspiring in every page 174
