Dean’s Letter FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE 1956 – 2009 FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE THE FIRST OF THE MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITYOrigins and Values:Middle East Technical University (METU) was established in1956 as a Faculty of Architecture and Community Planning forthe Middle East region, through the collaboration of the Turkishgovernment and the UN. The Faculty of Architecture, originatedfrom this background with a special law which made it possiblefor the best universal minds from all over the world to meet withTurkish outlook, expertise and practice in the middle of Anatolia(in Ankara). The new academic attitude of the Faculty of Architecture mainlyconsisted of critical outlook, new conceptual research for thefundamentals of good design and good planning, a good mixof international students from the region, open juries and opendiscussions in the classes, social consciousness on a globalscale and taking social responsibility on a local scale. This is stillthe major behaviour pattern in itself for our work at the Faculty. In the early sixties, the Faculty founded the first Department ofCity and Regional Planning and the first Department ofArchitectural Conservation in Turkey and in 1979 theDepartment of Industrial Design. The University, in order to save the cultural heritage of thecampus, carried out excavations on METU campus site inassociation with our Faculty. The findings dating from5000-3000BC are now exhibited in the first private museum ofTurkey, which is in the Faculty complex.arch.metu.edu.tr 3
Middle East Higher Institute of Technology Openning Ceremony15 November 1956
The Faculty started publishing the Journal of the Faculty ofArchitecture in 1975. A refereed journal, it was first of its kindand accepts articles in both Turkish and English(www.arch.metu.edu.tr/jfa.htm ). It is now in the Arts andHumanities Citation Index as the only Turkish Architecturejournal and one of the approximately thirty journals covered bythe AHCI.The documentation efforts of our Faculty’s heritage led to thefounding of Faculty Archive of Slides.Slides, produced since1956 and which amounts to around 100.000 vernacular, classical and modern buildings, environments and products, inTurkey and abroad, Historic Buildings Documentation Archivesof about 800 historic monuments (some of which do not existanymore) and Planning Archives starting with some of theoriginals of the Ankara Plan by Jansen of 1926 and onwards, and a library of thesis work produced since 1962 (all in English)and books from different periods form the Information andDocumentation Center of the Faculty. The center is alsoaccepted as being one of the three architectural culture centersin Turkey. All services are open to the public. Our Research efforts are reorganized around the ‘Faculty ofArchitecture Research, Design and Planning Center’ (MATPUM)with Research Units ranging from theoretical research toprofesional consultancy services to building science experimentsand ‘branding’. The Research Center has a separate buildingon the reseach strip of the campus. (www.matpum.com).In order to support our research and education efforts we aretransforming our workshops into design research laboratories. They are being organized around the areas of, ‘virtual design’,‘animation’, environmental physics’ and ‘solid modelling’.The Faculty already enjoys most up-to-date workshops and aprinting press which not only prints our journal but has printed agood collection of some 300 books all written by our staff since1962.Faculty cooperation with industry, private sector and NGO’s aredeveloping in a very healthy manner. Our staff act as publicspecialists for a significant number of court cases, most of whichare very important in terms of public impact. Some of ourresearch activity is about helping the local authorities onenvironmental issues, on policy making, crisis and hazardmanagement issues and above all in strategic spatial planning. Our alumni, now around 6000 graduates, are organizedwithin the new Faculty of Architecture Alumni Association(www.omim.org.tr). The Association as an NGO is providingconsultancy services for the public and the private sectors. 5
In 2010 we shall be celebrating the fiftieth year of our firstgraduates, and looking at the way we are now organized, wecan say that our next fifty years looks more multi-dimensional,multi-modal and multi-disciplinary in terms of the knowledge weare going to process and in terms of the public, privateand non-governmental sectors as well as the national andinternational bodies we are going to work with. All this means that we are open and looking forward to meetingand working together with those ‘students, teachers andresearchers of architecture, planning and design’ who wouldlike to share our basic attitudes and who would like to developnew mutual value systems in the related areas of knowledge andpractice as well as the regions they are set or meant to influenceand would like to ask good questions and try to do the most forgood answers and best practice. DEPARTMENTS
ARCHITECTUREThe Department of Architecture (the first department general informationestablished at METU in 1956) offers undergraduate andgraduate degrees. The four-year undergraduate study grantsthe Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Students have theopportunity to follow minor programs in different areas likebusiness administration, building technology, structure, andindustrial design. Summer practices carried out each summerthroughout the period of study ensure that students areintroduced to building and professional practice in the field, onconstruction sites and in architectural offices. Graduateprograms of the department offer the degrees of M.Arch. andPh.D. in Architecture, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Building Science,M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Restoration and Preservation of HistoricalMonuments, M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Architecture andM.Sc. in Computational Design and Fabrication Technologiesin Architecture, which is an International Joint Master DegreeProgram with TUDelft, leading towards a dual diploma. Thedepartment also offers two undergraduate minor programs inConservation and Architectural Culture. The department, whichhas been employing visiting professors from abroad since itsinception, continues its international relations through lectures, student exchange programs and collaborative projects, especially by actively taking place in ERASMUS andERASMUS-MUNDUS student and staff exchange programs. The department is a member of the European Association ofArchitectural Education (EAAE) and International Council forResearch and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB). archweb.metu.edu.tr 11

studio industrial design id.metu.edu.trresearch interests and facilities Industrial design is a practice mainly concerned with the creation of products that satisfy human needs by integrating qualities such as ease of use, cultural and symbolic values, market appeal and safety, and to develop the concepts embodying such qualities for manufacture. The role of industrial desigers is to develop products that we frequently come across in daily life that we choose from among many alternatives and that respect our quality of life and our environment. Creative and innovative design products that designers bring forth contribute to making our lives easier and enriching our experences. These products may range from electrical household appliances, cooking ware, mobile phones, wristwatches, office furniture systems, lighting units, city furniture to transport vehicles. The industrial designer contributes to various stages of product development such as defining needs, responding to needs in the form of new products or making changes in existing products and ensuring the recycling of products once they have completed their life cycles. The industrial designer also makes sure that the design process takes into account manufacturers' considerations related to production, cost, market share and target market, as well as cultural values, aesthetic preferences, product safety and ease of use. METU’s Department of Industrial Design uses the facilities and services offered within the Faculty of Architecture’s Computing Labs and Documentation Unit. These included computer aided design, image processing, multimedia presentations, desktop publishing, data analysis, printing and reproduction. For model making, the Faculty workshops for wood, metal, plastics, and ceramics are used as well as rapid-prototyping facilities. 46
