LOCKDOWN DAYS-MY EXPERIENCE By Pranav Krishna M.S, Class 9 B Due to the sudden out-burst of corona virus disease, Indian government declared lockdown on all states. Even though lockdown was declared after most of my examinations were over, my Sanskrit examination cancelled. Most of my friends tell me that Sanskrit is the easiest exam. That cannot be said true for me. I was very weak at Sanskrit often barely passing, so I was happy of it being cancelled. Before lockdown, there was nothing out of ordinary, except for the fact that I was studying my brain off for my final exam. Even though COVID-19 was not very serious during exam period, the virus started to affect India somewhere around my third exam. I then found out that examination had been cancelled for class’s 6-7 .I was super mad after hearing we had to continue exams normally. After exams had been cancelled for classes 6-7, we 8th graders had a different seating arrangement. This was because with the 6th and 7th classes gone we had a lot of free seats, so they decided to make two of us sit in one bench. This was good news for some of my friends because they were placed near smart kids which made copying easy. Not being able to copy did not bother me, because I had studied for the exams and I knew most of the answers. As I mentioned before, the exams were cancelled before my Sanskrit exam. Unfortunately the 9th standard exam was over one day before the lockdown, so I bet, they feel 18 | P a g e S O L A C E

trolled. As it was finally over I did what any sensible examiner will do, made myself a cup of coffee and enjoyed myself. Mom told me that the quarantine was a great opportunity to develop some new skills. I have to admit, I was not too excited at first because I was hoping to laze around all summer. Eventually after a lot of pestering, I agreed to learn Malayalam with mom. At first I could read small parts of class 1 textbook. Then after about 2 weeks or so, mom encouraged me to read newspaper headlines. I of course made a lot of mistakes at first then eventually got the hang of it. Almost one year before, I went to a 2 day summer camp, I surprisingly made many good friends there. One thing I noticed about them was that they were good badminton players. I on the other hand, could not play badminton at all. So while they were playing badminton I had to sit there watching them. After the summer camp, I decided to learn badminton, but was too busy because of tuitions and swimming class. Even though I quit swimming after some time, I could not make time. Because of lockdown, tuitions were cancelled and I finally got the chance to learn it. Dad knew a bit about badminton, so he began to teach me. At first, I had to practice beating a tied up shuttle. Then mom began to play with me. Mom was not good at badminton so she had to practice a lot too. But because of work she did not have a lot of time to practise .After a lot practice, eventually I got to play with dad. At first, I could not play well but now, I can take some hard shorts. Now days we play regularly. I started playing the piano since 4th standard, so I know quite a bit about piano. I can even play 19 | P a g e S O L A C E

Malayalam film songs now. At first I went to a piano tuition, based on my experience it was very bad. Only a few students excelled from it. The main reason for that is they always teach you the basics, they never introduced any new songs, plus the fees were hefty. Another reason was that there were around 8 students in one batch and only one teacher. So what happens is that the teachers only concentrate on talented students and ignore the beginners. The only people who benefit from this class are the students who has experience, for others it is a waste of time. After quitting the piano tuition, I got a private tutor for piano. I was making better progress with the tutor than the tuition and very quickly I learnt it. Now as an entertainment during this lockdown, I play the piano every day. I have a subscription of kindle unlimited this means that I can read lot of books for free from the kindle unlimited section. Reading books and playing games in mobile were some of the side activities I did. I also went to my aunt’s house occasionally. As a conclusion I would like to list out some merits and demerits of this lockdown period. Empty Street is a common sight during lockdown days 20 | P a g e S O L A C E

MERITS OF LOCKDOWN The lockdown allowed me to spend more time with my family which I previously could not. During the lockdown I had a lot of free time which I could utilise to learn new things. It even gave me time to write my own stories such as this diary and a story which is under scripting. DEMERITS OF LOCKDOWN I really miss my friends because I haven’t seen them in many months. I miss the lively interactive classes which I earlier had. *************** 21 | P a g e S O L A C E

The nightmare I saw a nightmare It really scared me! The world was going to end No humans,no animals,no birds There was nothing left behind. The houses and buildings were destroyed It really scared me! The world was like a desert No water,no plants,no trees There was nothing to drink or eat. I was the only person left behind It really scared me! I was thirsty and hungry No fruits,no vegetables,no shade There was nothing I needed. The heat of the sun increased It really scared me! Will I become a toast No fan,no A/C,no wind There was nothing for being cool. Then I suddenly woke up From the scary nightmare! I thought will it really happen No birth,no life,no happiness There will be total silence. -Sreediya.A.R IX B 28 | P a g e S O L A C E

Decision. He looked at the clock, how it went tick tock tick tock, how the time is being wasted. Glancing at the notebook he had beside him, While his smartphone was in his hand. He sighed out, rubbing his face with his hands and staring at the wall. The feeling in his heart almost indescribable, like a heavyweight in his heart. Should he really miss out on the fun of playing with his friends? Or prepare for the speech he had the next day?, Half of him telling him to go have fun, while most of him wanting to get that feeling of satisfaction when he will finish the speech tomorrow, which he has never experienced since he always chose fun over it. He really wanted to get rid of this heavy feeling that he felt, which made him in a state where he couldn’t sleep, He always coped with it but this time..it was too much. Once again glancing on the notebook beside him, he texted his friends saying he couldn’t come. He let his want to feel success and happiness tomorrow take over him, his want to finally get rid of the heavy feeling in his heart, this time being the first time ever where he let this want take over him because otherwise he always chose ‘Fun’ over it. His friend’s replies were something that made him question the decision he took, apparently, he was ‘Not cool’ for making the decision to not join in for playing games with them. He stopped the frown that was about to climb onto his lips, shaking his head he blurted out words directed to himself, words that were coming from his heart wanting himself to come into a realization, “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that’s coming”. The words that he himself said made him softly smile, reach for the notebook beside him and write the speech that he was supposed to say tomorrow at his school. He was standing near the stage, his heart beating so fast. He was scared, what if people didn’t like it? What if they thought it wasn’t good enough? What if he came out as weird? What if he messed up?. He glanced up to realize that the next turn was his to say his speech, he closed his eyes to calm his crazy heart, he opened his eyes to glare at the floor, the image of everyone making fun of him in his mind, He shook his head, saying to particularly no one but himself, “In the end, they’ll judge me anyway, so whatever.” He nodded to himself with a small smile walking towards the mic when his name was called, ready to say the speech he had prepared. 30 | P a g e S O L A C E

“...Maybe i made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. I am who i am today, with all my faults. Tomorrow i might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’s me too.” With that last sentence, he finished off his speech, bowing a little bit, turning to walk off the stage. The applause and cheers erupted from the audience in front of the stage, making him halt his steps and look at them. All of their faces expressed shock and happiness, the claps and cheers making his heart clear away the heavy feeling he had been carrying for months, replacing it with joy and proudness. Once again he bowed, walking off the stage with a warm smile on his face. He didn’t see his friends after school, But he was too happy to even care. He was in his room, with a large smile on his face staring at the wall. He remembered that he used to stare at the wall with emptiness in him, but here he was doing the same thing but instead his heart filled with happiness. He thought about, what if he didn’t make that decision? What if he chose fun over it? He was glad that he chose this over fun..because this was indeed way better, the pain he had been feeling really can’t compare to the joy he’s feeling right now at this moment. - Inspired by BTS [Bangtan Sonyeondan] - - By Soorya Suresh [9B] 31 | P a g e S O L A C E

An imaginary city I saw in my dream, An imaginary city. I couldn't speak a word, Because it was just a dream! The city was full of chocolates, That I loved very much. I couldn't eat a piece, Because it was just a dream! Then I saw a candy house, Where the gingerbread man lived. I couldn't knock the door, Because it was just a dream! The trees were lollipops, The hills were ice-creams I couldn't climb, Because it was just a dream! The rivers were chocolate, The seas were strawberry. I couldn't bath in it, Because it was just a dream! The houses were candies, The people were gingerbreads. I couldn't eat them, Because it was against the rule! I suddenly woke up, From the beautiful dream. Then the city disappeared, Because it was just a dream! -Sreediya A.R. IX B 32 | P a g e S O L A C E
