methodTORAH FOR CHILDRENOVERVIEW The Children's Chumash is designed to make learning Chumash become a skill based experience with an element of inclusion to reach the weaker students as well. The book weaves together all the different skills needed to learn how to learn Chumash, and integrates them into the pesukim so that this becomes a live experience. Instruction is guided and opportunities for practice are presented as needed. The Children’s Chumash is built on the following principles: • Skills are thoroughly broken down step by step on paper, reaching even the weakest students. • Children are always engaged in independent learning that is challening but within their reach and only spoonfed that which is currently above their reach. • Each step is interactive and integrated into the Chumash providing the children opportunity to apply the skills during the learning. • Learning is visual where possible. Shoroshim and comprehension have pictures attached instead of abstract labels. • Emphasis on decoding, textual comprehension, and review. • Learning follows the simplest way for a child to understand using Rashi where applicable. • Action/Verb Shoroshim are generally taught using past tense as that is easier for the children to pronounce and remember. A different tense may be used on occasion if the past tense is very uncommon. The exact correct shoresh according to dikduk is written in the top corner for reference.
