Draw on the board picture of a pen, den, ten, hen etc., and in the same manner elicit from 51
children which letter comes in between. Allow them to come out with words on their own which teacher should put up on the board. Concept: This and that: Reinforcement of this concept. Teacher displays few objects in the center of the circle and few more in the corner of the classroom. Teacher asks each student to identify each object and say in complete sentence using, “this is _______ or that is________” Teacher clarifies to the students that , ‘this’ is used when you are talking about a person, place or thing which is closer to us, where as ‘that’ is used when it is far from us. Give many more examples using the immediate environment. 11.30 to 12.00 noon: Vegetable printing: Keep a drawing ready of a square and then cut lady’s finger (Bhendi) into half. Dip it in the paint preferably red colour and let children fill the large square in the sheet of paper. Allow it to dry and then write each child’s name on it and display it on the board. This gives children a sense of pride. 12.00 to 12.30: Number work: Backward counting 50 to 41: First make children do this activity by writing number on the floor. Let each child walk back ward from50 to 41 and then reinforce it with the worksheet in the skill sheets book. 12.30 to 1.00: Reinforcement of the story the DOVE and the ANT. Teacher sums up the session by saying that ‘brain is an important organ which helps us to remember all the past things. The brain is situated in the head. She also emphasizes on importance of head. People who drive two-wheeler must wear a helmet to protect from dangers. Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Concept: Reinforcement of color-red and square Please use the rhymes book page on shapes and make children colour the squares with red colour. Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10am Concept: Identifying square shape from the given shapes Teacher draws different shapes on the floor and instructs each student to jump only in the squares. Do all five 9.30 to 10.00- circle time: Discussion on helping parents: Teachers start the discussion with a little story: There was a little boy who loved helping his mother and father. Every morning he would get up on his own. He had the alarm on in the night so that he could get up without his parents telling him to do so. Then he would go to the bathroom brush his teeth and go the open area in his house and there he would do some exercises like stretching, bending and jogging. After which he would drink the milk his mother gives him. He would then water the plants in the garden. Take his bath and get ready for school. He would pack his school bag. Have his breakfast and after breakfast he would clear his plate and put it in the kitchen sink. Then go to school. When he returns from school he would change his clothes and put his shoes and socks in place and eat the snacks his mother gives him and go out to play. After returning from play he would do his homework and read what his teacher taught for that day and then have little fun with his parents and watch TV for some time and have his dinner and then say his prayer to God for the wonderful day He has given them and by 9 in the night he would go to sleep. His mother would read a story to him and hearing that he would fall asleep. Telling them this story teacher should initiate the discussion. Ask them questions on how they help their parents and regarding their habits. This discussion can be taken up for 2 to 3 days. 10.00 to 10.45: Work time 10.45 to 11.00 am: Snack time. 11.00 to11.30 am: Number work: Before and after numbers from 41to 50: Please draw the numbers in a vertical sequence and make children play a game with it. One child will be on the number line and others can tell her to move to the before number or after number to any given number between 41 to 50 and if the child makes a wrong move she/he is out and another child comes in that place. Every child is given a chance for ten numbers ( If not out). This should be followed by the worksheet on page 29 of the skill sheets book. 56
11.30 to 12.00 noon: Fist painting: Take white sheets of paper and give one sheet to each child. Each of them should be given one sheet. Make children keep their hands in the fist form and let each child dip the fist in paint and press it on the paper. These can later be made by the teacher in the form of large petals or mice etc. This is a fun activity and helpful to children for fine motor development. 12.00 to 12.30: Language development: Introduction of ‘I’ as a vowel: Teacher should give words like b – n, f – n, p – n, t – n and so on the board and keep pictures of bin, fin, pin, tin etc., on the board and elicit from children the missing letter which is ‘I’. And move on to make a lot of words with i. in between. 12.30 to 1.00 pm: Game blind man’s buff: Teacher ties a scarf or a hanky on one child’s eyes and the child has to catch anyone from the group of friend’s and identify who it is. Let children play this game till 12.50 after which let the children freshen up and be ready to leave. While children are leaving let them say this prayer: Thank you God for the day so good. For the learning, joy and happiness we got, Please let all the children in the world get all this happiness and joy too. That’s for day 4 teachers. Followed by simple bending exercises: First bending forward and touching the toes, then bending side ways, standing tip toe on the toes. And make them repeat the rhymes learnt through the week. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Continue with the story and discussion on helping parents at home and good habits while repeating the story given yesterday. 10.00 to 10. 45: Work time. 10.45 to 11.10: Snack time. 11. 10 to 11. 40 : Number work: Value of numbers: give children some ice cream sticks and let them count and tell the value of the numbers. After this make them do the worksheet on page 30 in skill sheets. 11.40 to 12. 10: Magic printing: Teacher writes each child’s name with wax on a sheet of paper before hand. (Keep this ready a day before) Let children take water colours and paint it on the sheet. Each child’s name would appear on it. Make them repeat the spelling of their name. 12.10 to 12. 40: Language development. Word building with vowel ‘I’. Teacher this is a continuation of yesterday’s activity. Each child should be given a portion of the floor and a chalk and duster or a piece of cloth. And told to make as many words as possible with ‘I’ in the center. He wanted to kill the mouse because it disturbed him. The mouse begged for mercy. The lion was very kind. He let the mouse go. After few days, the lion fell into a hunter’s trap. He roared and shouted. The mouse heard him. It came running. It bit the net. The lion was set free. He thanked the mouse. Monkeys, deer, tiger and others and while dancing they can make the sound like that animal. After this children will imitate their parents. They will talk like their father or mother. This activity will help them to observe people keenly and also pick up the good habits and mannerisms of the parents. 9.30 to 10.00: Story time: Lion and the mouse: Teacher please put the story on cards or draw on a chart and keep it ready. Children should arrange the story in a sequential order. This way they learn to say which scene comes in the beginning and which comes in later. 10.00 to 10.40 am: Work time 10.40 to 11.00 am: Snack time 11.00 to 11.30 am: Language development: Vowel ‘U’. Teacher should keep letters a to z 5 sets ready. Cut thick chart paper or card board into one inch squares and write letter a to z one on each and like that keep 5 sets ready. Make some extra U’s and give these to children. Let them make as many words as possible using letter u. You could make them work in pairs of in fours also. 11.30 to 12.00: Concept building activity: Recap of the concept up and down: Let children identify all the objects which are above their height level and which are below their level. Families where there are more number of children are big families and families where grand parents, uncles, aunts and cousins live together are called joint families. Oranges and lemon: Teachers make children stand with hands up and two children join their hands to make an arch. Other children form and line and pass under it. Remember me, When you are happy. When the rhyme ends the children bring down their hands which are in the form of an arch. And the child who is caught in between it will be out. Day 2 9.00 to 11.30 am: prayer and circle time and field trip: Today is a field trip to the market to see the fruits and vegetables and also interview the vegetable vendor. Children should be taken to a nearby super market or a market. Teachers should make a pilot visit a day before talk to the people and then only take the children. Let children carry their water bottles and their snacks. If it is close by children can walk, if far than take them by a van or car. Let children see the different types of fruits and vegetables. Let them ask the vendor the prices of each. Teacher can buy some apples or bananas and some cucumber. After this children can come back to the school. Wash their hands and have snack. Then they should sit in a circle and discuss on first how did they go? When they went out of the school did they turn to the right or left? What about the movement of their vehicle was it fast or slow? Than the various vegetables and fruits they saw. Their price, colour, shape and taste. Teacher can cut the fruits and vegetables she brought and each child can taste it. They discuss on it. Good teachers! Now let children relax for some time: Give them some worksheets on language and number work: Number work before and after worksheets in the activity. Language on page identifying of letters. MONTHLY CURRICULUM FOR UKG (Blooms) Month: August Theme: Neighborhood Week-1 Day-1 Circle time: 9.00 am to 9.30 am Concept: My School Teacher asks the following questions: What is the name of your school? Where is it located? What is the name of your principal? What is the name of your class teacher? Who is your best friend? What do you do in the school? Teacher sums up the session by saying that ‘we come to school to learn. It is a place where you learn many more things besides studies. We need to be regular and punctual to school’. 9.30 to 10.00: Language development: Concept of He/She and It. Make children sit in a circle. Let one child talk about the other child. This is – the child’s name. He or she is – years old. This is a ball. It is red in colour. Tell children that when you have to replace the name of a boy you should use he and if it is a girl you should use she and if it is any thing we use ‘it’. Give every child an opportunity to say some thing about a boy, girl or a thing using he, she and it. 82

She makes pairs before she send them on the task. Large Group Time: 12.10 to 12.45 pm Concept: Reinforcement of School Mapping Teacher makes the students do the worksheet related to blue colour from the activity book. Day-2 Circle time: 9.00 to 9.30am Concept: Punctuality and discipline Teacher asks the following questions: What time do you get up? What do you do after that? What time do you start to school? What time do you reach school? Are you late to school? How regularly do you come late to school? What happens when you are late to school? Teacher ponder on certain points as ‘everybody should be regular and punctual to school and doing their work. If one comes late to school, he/she will be missing a lot in the morning session. Also it doesn’t look good if you step into the class late while the class is going on. Inculcating habits like regularity and punctuality would help us to be a good human being too’. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Recap of vowels. Write on each child’s fingers of right hand a,e,I,o,u and let each child make the words using the vowels. 10.00 to 10.40 am: Work time 10.40 to 11.00 am: Snack time Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Reel printing. Dip a thread in paint and fix it between two fingers of each hand and then use it to create designs on a paper. Various designs will be formed on the paper. Write each child’s name on it and file it. In fact you can teach every child to write his or her name on it. 84
Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10 pm Teacher makes the students go round the school, and remember the things/rooms/people they see. After they come back make them dance to the tune of some music. She calls one girl and one boy in the center of the circle and asks the girl to introduce the boy to the group by saying that ‘His name is __________. He is a boy’. Teacher makes the students repeat the exercise till everybody gets their turn to say. Note: Teacher to give clear instructions to the students before she starts the activity. Day-3 Circle time: 9.00 to 9.30am Concept: Right- left/class mapping Teacher begins the session by asking the students to show each one’s left leg, left hand, right leg and right hand. She then asks each student to give the list of things/objects/people they see to his/her right side and left side. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Language development: word building. Give children the alphabet cards made last month. Try to add some more to the same. Now divide children into group and give them at two to three sets. Remember to make more of vowel cards. Let children make as many words as they can. This is an excellent way for word building. 10.00 to 10.40 am: Work time 10.40 to 11.00 am: Snack time 11.00 to 11.15 am Out door play Small Group Activity: 11.15 am to 11.45 am Teacher makes the students do the number work worksheet from the activity book. Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10am Physical Exercise: March past Teacher takes the students to the ground and makes the students do the march past. While the students are doing the exercise, teacher to ensure that the students stretch right hand with left leg and left hand with right leg. Note: This activity will be useful for the Independence Day celebrations. Large Group Time: 12.10 pm to 12.45 pm Concept: Introduction of nos. 51 to 60 86
Teacher displays flash cards of the numbers and makes each number and leaves it on the floor. Subsequently, she makes sure that the students repeat the number after her. While she is displaying the flash cards, teacher should ensure that the numbers are placed towards the students so that they don’t get confused about the place value. She makes the students repeat the numbers after her. She even shows the numbers on the abacus. Procedure: Keep five beads on the tens place and keep adding one after the other in the one’s place. She makes sure that after nine beads, one bead to be replaced with the one ten beads. Songs and Rhymes 12.45 to 1.00 pm Teacher makes the students repeat the action song of day-1. Teach them the National Anthem and vande mataram. This will help in Independence Day celebrations which is fast approaching. 87
Day-4 Show and tell activity: 9.00 to 9.30 am Concept: Color Blue and shades of blue Teacher displays different objects of different shade in blue color like purple, dark blue, light blue, sky blue, etc and calls each student to pick up the object, say the name and also color of the object. Teacher can help the students in identifying the color. If the teacher feels that the shade is new to the students, she then makes them repeat and also shows different objects of that particular shade. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Language Development: Make children list out orally which teacher can put on the board all the words related to the school. 10.00 to 10.40 am: Work time 10.40 to 11.00 am: Snack time 11.00 to 11.15 am: Story : The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing A Wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to the vigilance of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so it put it on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep. The Lamb that belonged to the sheep whose skin the Wolf was wearing began to follow the Wolf in the Sheep's clothing. So, leading the Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her - and for some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals. Teacher should just narrate this story. Day-5 Circle time: 9.00 to 9.30 am Concept: Introduction of community helpers Teacher asks the following questions: If your hair grows longer, where do you go to cut it short? What is he called as? Why do we need to go to a saloon? Can’t your mother do it at home? If you are not well, whom do you go to? Whom do you find there? Will the doctor does all jobs or gives few tasks to other person also? What is she called as? Teacher sums up the session by saying that the barber, doctor, and nurse are very important for us. They help us when we are in need. They are very helpful to the community. So they are called as ‘community helpers. The barber is now called as a hair dresser’. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Language development. More word building: Teach children to join letters to make words. This should be a fantastic activity which children will love to do and helps them in vocabulary development. Let each child be given the card bearing one letter eg a, e, i, o, u and some consonants b, c, d, etc., and teach should draw four squares on the floor. When teacher blows the whistle children should form a meaningful word and write that word in the square on the floor. In this way children can form as many words as they can. 10.00 to 10.40 Work time 90
10.40 to 11.00 Snack time 11.00 to 11.15: Story of wolf in sheep’s clothing: Discuss the characteristics of wolf and the sheep for today Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Concept: Maze work sheet on page 94 in rhymes book. Explain to children what a maze is. Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10 pm Physical Exercise: Organize a small hurdle race. Keep some chairs, old tyres, tables and let children cross these and reach the winning post. After this have March Past Large Group Time: 12.10 to 12.45 pm Concept: Triangle Teacher introduces the shape through pictures and asks few students to draw on the board. She then, makes the students do the worksheet related to triangle in the activity book. Songs and Rhymes 12.45 to 1.00 pm Teacher teaches any patriotic song of her choice to prepare the students for Independence Day celebrations. This will enable the doctor to make his/her talk more contextualized. The doctor is asked to ponder on the following points: What time does he/she get up in the morning? What time does he/she go to bed? What does he/she do in the whole day? How much time does he/she gives to the family? What does he/she do on a holiday? Teacher asks questions to elicit the answers from the doctor invited or makes two to three students ask the above questions. In case, students are interviewing, teacher should change questions like, sit/madam, what time do you get up in the morning, etc. Teacher gives vote of thanks to the doctor spending his/her valuable time with the children and giving insightful thoughts with the students. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Story time: Teacher along with another adult enacts the story for the children. 10.00 am to 10.40 am: Work time 92
10.40 to 11.00 am: Snack time 11.00 to 11.15: free play for children on the school play pen swings, slides and so on. Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Concept: Writing of words doctor, nurse and barber Teacher makes the students write the spellings of the words. Before the students begin to write, teacher makes the students repeat the spellings. Note: Teacher gives this as a copy writing activity. Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10pm Physical Exercise: Jumping from a height of 1 ft Procedure: Teacher makes necessary arrangement any parapet wall or bricks arranged at one foot. Keep some thick foot mat on the floor and make children jump from one foot height. Large Group Time: 12.10 to 12.45 pm Concept: Identification and manipulation of the shape ‘Triangle’ Teacher draws one left slant line and asks them what is it. She then draws a right slant line. She asks each student to identify the same. She finally draws one sleeping line and joins both the slant line. She first makes the students identify the sleeping line and then makes them to identify the shape. She makes clear to the students that two slant lines and one sleeping line makes a ‘triangle’. She also clarifies the point that the triangle has three sides. Teacher makes each student to draw the triangle on the board/slate/floor. Day-2 Circle time: 9.00 to 9.30am Concept: Introduction of ‘she’ Teacher makes the students all the boys sit at one side and all the girls to the other side. Teacher makes the students repeat the exercise till everybody gets their turn to say. Note: Teacher to give clear instructions to the students before she starts the activity. Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Concept: Triangle Teacher makes the students do the related worksheet from the skill sheets book. Large Group Time: 12.10 to 12.45 pm Concept: Introduction of numbers 61-70 Floor board activity. Teacher writes number 61 to 70 on the floor and children will hop from number 61 to 70. Songs and Rhymes 12.45 to 1.00 pm Teacher makes the students repeat the previous day’s action song and practice for August 15th with all the patriotic songs. 95
Day-3 Show and tell activity: 9.00 to 9.30am Concept: Community helpers Teacher shows the pictures of people like cobbler, carpenter, plumber, tailor, post man, policeman and asks each student to identify and say what that person does for us. Teacher then poses questions like: How helpful is a cobbler? What if you don’t have a cobbler? Teacher poses similar questions for other helpers too. She concludes the session by saying that, ‘These are the people who are very helpful to us. Without them, our life comes to a stand still. Hence, they are called as community helpers.’ She once again elicits the community helpers which they have already learnt viz, tailor, teacher, postman, cook, nurse, cobbler, plumber, and carpenter. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Language development: word ladder game. Teacher should write one word on the board eg chalk and draw a step down and one child should tell a word with this ending word eg kettle and another child writes in the next step egg and so on this word ladder is an interesting game for vocabulary development. Small Group Activity: 11.15 am to 11.45 am Concept: Community helpers Teacher makes the students do the related worksheet in the activity book. Structured Play: 11.45 to 12.10am 96

Day-4 Circle time: 9.00 to 9.30 am Concept: Spellings of the community helpers Teacher displays the pictures of all the community helpers which are already taught to the students. She calls each student in turns to identify the community helper. Subsequently, teacher makes the students repeat the spelling the person in the picture. She repeats the same procedure until she is done with all the community helpers. 9.30 to 10.00 am: Language development: Listening activity. Teacher should read out a story. Community helpers are people who help us and make our work easier. They are the doctor, nurse, teacher, watchman, policeman, fire man. The doctor treats us when we are sick. A teacher teaches us and makes us good boys and girls, a watchman guards us and keeps us safe, a fire man saves us from fire. Read out this passage and ask children the following questions: Who are community helpers? How do they help us? Who is a doctor? Who is a teacher? 11.00 to 11.15: Free play Small Group Activity: 11.15 to 11.45 am Concept: Writing words of community helpers Teacher makes the students do the worksheet related to the concept in the activity book. 98
