59 Lesson 1 Using Dictionary A dictionary is a book that allows learners to understand the meanings of words. It helps learners to check the spellings and pronunciation. So, every leaner of English should practice and master the use of dictionary. Words in a dictionary is arranged in the alphabetical order, that is, from A to Z in an English-Thai dictionary and from ก to ฮ in a Thai-English dictionary. Learners need to know and memorize the order of alphabets to quickly and conveniently find the meanings. Finding the meaning of the words 1. Looking up meanings by browsing in the alphabetical order (A – Z) 2. Learners may not find the vocabulary as it appears in the book, since that work may be in a different form, like –ing -ed -s or in a comparative form –er or a superlative form –est . So, learners need to find the meaning with the main vocabulary. Example watched comes from watch funniest comes from funny happiness comes from happy 3. One word may have several functions. Kick, for example, can be both a noun and a verb. Some dictionaries have examples . Examples kick king (-s. ruler, sovereign, monarch) –ex. The lion is the king of the jungle. Learners need to understand the structure of the sentence in which they want to find the meanings of vocabulary, so that they can choose the correct meaning. Some dictionaries offer synonms or antonyms, such as S. in this context refers to synonym.
60 4. Definitions in a dictionary One word may have many different meanings. Dictionaries will arrange the meanings in order of frequency, starting with the most frequently used and so on. Example alike / - alikeness n. –ex. These things are alike. They (both) behaved alike. In addition, we can see that dictionaries also detail the pronunciation and stress, especially for the words that have several functions and heteronyms (spelled the same but pronounced differently). For instance, the word present can be both an adjective, a noun and a verb, but have different ways of stress as indicated by the symbol above the phonetic symbols. Example present (v) present (n) –ex. Mary presented her friend to the teacher. Please note the stress of vocabulary. As a noun and an adjective, it is stressed at former syllable, but as a verb it is stressed at the latter. If pronounced incorrectly, the meaning wound change. 5. Some dictionaries describe the usage of vocabulary and if it is a verb, it will show its past and past participle forms. Example give / giv / verbs (pt gave; pp given) 1. [T] give sb sth; give sth to sb: I gave Jackic a book for her birthday. * Give me that book a minute – I just want to check something. *I gave my bag to my friend to look after. We can look for idioms from a dictionary.
61 Example Sit / sit / verb (pt, pp sat) 1. [I] นงั่ : We sat in the garden all afternoon. Idioms sit on the fence Notes The word inside / / represents the pronunciation guide for the preceding word. Some dictionaries provide this for learners to study. If it is in Thai language, the pronunciation guide will be in brackets (). Abbreviations in [ ] [ I ] = intransitive verb [T] = transitive verb Activity 1 Sort the following words alphabetically as in a dictionary. bill meaning extra glass democracy carport glad egg media law early soil boy gloom responsibility 1 6 11 2 7 12 3 8 13 4 9 14 5 10 15
