Teal Sound Jacksonville, FL I tealsound.org CircO: Circus for a Modern World Scene 1 Entrada by Robert W. Smith Scene 2 Balada by Robert W. Smith Giro by Robert W. Smith El Payaso by Robert W. Smith Ritmo de Habanera by Lee Hansen, Jared Johnson Scene 3 Circo Grandioso by Robert W. Smith C ircO: Circus for the Modern World incorporates musical and visual ideas that pertain to the images of a modern circus, while using elements of Spanish musical themes throughout. While some music is based on themes from the public domain, much of the material is the original work of Teal Sound composer and arranger, Robert W. Smith. The show is divided into three scenes, each represent- ing and highlighting the strengths of the drum corps as individual sections and as a whole. For example, the “Balada” portion of the second scene is designed to fea- ture the Teal Brass section, but quickly transitions into the next “circus act”—the color guard members in their own feature. It will be exciting to see these elements transi- tion seamlessly as Teal Sound transforms the drum corps field into a big top, balancing technical achievement with the corps’ trademark ability to entertain the crowd. 100 2012 DCI SOUVENIR YEARBOOK

Troopers Casper, WY I troopersdrumcorps.org This Was the Future Galop (from Souvenirs, Op. 28) by Samuel Barber The Heiress Suite by Aaron Copland Music for the Theater by Aaron Copland I nspired by America’s growing industrialism at the turn of the 20th century, This Was the Future evokes an era where late Victorian values were being tested, and there was a quickly developing sense that the future would transform the way people lived. Using hummable melodic themes by such classic American composers as Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland—and a unique look inspired by the “steam punk” movement—Troopers will bring an engaging, mes- merizing “night at the theater” onto the field. Adding to the drama will be the vignettes, virtuosic solos, and small ensembles emerging from the larger corps, as well as tutti sections drawing on the corps’ full power. Yet This Was the Future also pays homage to the ideas that have shaped the Troopers—and drum corps— throughout the group’s history: great music, company fronts, and rousing emotion. 102 2012 DCI SOUVENIR YEARBOOK

Revolution San Antonio, TX I revolutionypa.org Shattered T he word Shattered carries with it some very strong visual connotations. Open Class BLUE DEVILS C CONCORD, CA • BLUEDEVILS.ORG THE AMERICAN WEST Great open expanses and uncharted territory... Unknown dangers and limitless opportunities... The American West was abun- dant with beauty, bravery, and the delicate balance between devastating failure and incredible success. Director Mark Ripley CITY SOUND LONG BEACH, CA • CITY-SOUND.ORG SHOW TBA Founded in 1997 to offer teens and young adults from different cultural backgrounds a positive outlet, City Sound’s primary goal is to “steer our kids away from street violence, provide them with an excellent performing arts education, and create a place of refuge from the everyday problems that our young adults face,” says corps director and founder Nathaniel Lewis. The group made its Drum Corps International debut in 2010. Director Nathaniel Lewis GOLD SAN DIEGO, CA • GOLDDRUMCORPS.ORG DIFFERENT This all-original show by Scott Director celebrates diversity and tolerance. Many of today’s social influences encourage conformity as a way to gain acceptance. But when we start breaking away from the norm, we see that the real beauty lies in embracing our own differences and the differences of oth- ers. It’s about standing up and revealing the unique qualities that make you who you are—while being accepting, open-minded, tolerant of others, and willing to work together. Open Class THUNDER SPOKANE, WA • THUNDERDRUMCORPS.ORG REFLECTIONS In its 2012 show, Thunder will present patterns in sound and image that offer the audience a chance to reflect on how we often end right where we start. Lewis Norfleet’s original score uses palindromic rhythms, chord progressions, and melodic lines to emphasize the corps’ patterns of movement. Look closely, and you’ll notice the completion of larger reflective elements as well, as both the visual and audio programs will return to their original state in a mirrored image of the show’s starting point. Director Mike Koch VELVET KNIGHTS PASADENA, CA • VKYAO.ORG MOVING FORWARD Velvet Knights’ 2012 program may be exploring various ways of getting around, but the idea of going places isn’t just about moving from point A to point B on a map: It’s symbolic of the corps’ own goal of mov- ing forward to keep up with the constant evolution of the drum corps activity. Each of the show’s three movements uses one composer to explore a means of transport: Cars (John Adams); Walking (Thomas Newman), and Airplanes (Philip Glass). Hall of Fame Drum Corps International will be proud to welcome five new members into the DCI Hall of Fame during the 2012 World Championships in Indianapolis. George Bevilacqua Boston Crusaders Director (1971-’80) ■ One of DCI’s founding directors ■ Led Boston Crusaders through a period of organizational change ■ Created opportunities for groups ranked outside of theTop 12 ■ Helped bring the division now called Open Class into DCI’sWorld Championships ■ Helped establish drum corps organizations overseas. George kept the Crusaders from bankruptcy by personally funding much of the operations of the corps, purchasing new horns, new uniforms, and other equipment as it was needed,” says HOF mem- ber and former DCI Executive Director Don Pesceone. “George would keep finding ways to keep the corps alive and running.” Marty Hurley Phantom Regiment Percussion Instructor & Arranger (1975-’93) ■ Phantom fixture for nearly 20 seasons ■ Marched with Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights and Hawthorne Caballeros ■ Instructor for Southern Rebels, Stardusters, Bleu Raeders, Black Knights ■ Director of bands at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans for 37 years. Marty constantly demonstrated qualities of leadership and good will to the community and took our losses in good nature,” says Hall of Famer Dan Richardson. “He soothed the members when we lost and congratulated them with great gusto when we were successful. Either way, it didn’t matter to Marty: He was there to teach the kids.” DCI mourns Hurley’s passing in September 2011 at age 65. Scott Johnson Blue Devils Percussion Instructor & Arranger (1994-present) ■ Helped Blue Devils win 14 World Championships and 12 high-percussion caption awards ■ BD snare member 1976-’79 ■ Online educational percussion video innovator. As great as the number of titles, awards, and honors that Scott has earned ... far greater is the number of lives he has positively affected,” says former student Neal Flum, Associate Director of Athletic Bands, U. of Alabama. Not only is Scott an example of the best player, musician, and arranger,” says former Santa Clara colleague Ron Hardin, “the genuine enthusiasm he brings to each and every rehearsal is unmatched by anyone I’ve worked with.” Michael Klesch Brass Composer & Arranger (1985-present) ■ One of the most successful brass composers and arrangers in DCI history ■ Joined Cadets as bass drummer in the 1980s ■ Became Cadets drum major in 1983 ■ Replaced departing Hall of Fame brass arranger Jim Prime in ’85 and helped Cadets three-peat ■ Also has worked with Carolina Crown, Spirit, Phantom Regiment, Colts, and others ■ Assistant Band Director at UMass, 1995-2006. Michael gets both students and the instructional staff members to reach their highest level of per- formance and growth potential,” Hall of Fame member Thom Hannum says. “Some just have the knack for getting people to realize their musical capacities. Michael is one of these rare individuals. Mel Stratton Blue DevilsVisual Instructor (1970-’80) ■ Original Blue Devils staff member who developed new staging, drill formations, and other visual techniques to enhance the music’s emotional intensity ■ Won four World Championships between 1976-’80 ■ Formed California Dons Drum and Bugle Corps in 1984. The Blue Devils were brought to life by the sheer force of personality, vision, drive, and leadership of Mel Stratton,” says Hall of Famer Rick Odello. The visual design of the first Blue Devils championship show in 1976 was a product of Mel’s sense of showmanship and understanding that musicianship should never be compromised,” adds former Blue Devils director and Hall of Fame inductee Mike Moxley.
